Quest For Glory III: Wages of War | Part 1

The Adventurer's Log

Release Date: 1992

We saved Spielburg and we saved Shapeir. Now it's time to move to a new place in a game that wasn't originally supposed to exist, but they weren't ready for what they wanted to do in IV yet, so here go: Quest for Glory III time. What fate will befall Cinder Win this time? It's VGA graphics and point and click interface time.

Once again, not a blind play as I've watched it played, but anything wizard-specific will be new to me and I don't remember how to do everything.

Starting up I imported my character and had the option to be a Paladin thanks to my actions in 2, or stay a Wizard. After dithering I decided to stay a pure Wizard; that just stays closer to what I envision for Cinder. He is a Wizard dammit. Sorry, Rakeesh.

So these were my stats from last game:

It opened up in Aziza's chamber. She summoned me and Rakeesh to see her.

She rehashed the end of the last game.

Slightly incorrectly I might add. I did not bounce my spell off the wall. I just moved around to a good angle to knock the brazier over. And where's the statue, huh? Anyway I got to see Ad Avis fall again and this time he got the Graham falling scream from King's Quest V, so that was quite something.

When Ad Avis died his magic was unleashed which meant she and other magic users could feel it and know the moment of his death. However, I guess things can never be simple because no one could find his body, and if there's one thing to learn from various media it's that a missing body is never a good thing. Even she couldn't determine who or what removed his body with her spells. The unleashing of his power might have darker results.

In the meantime she received a message from Rakeesh's partner, the Sorceress Kreesha, in Tarna in...Fricana. We're going African theming this time. There was talk of war there and she believed only Rakeesh could bring peace now. She thinks there's more to this and that a Demon has broken into the land and does what any demon does, and seeks to destroy them all.

In three days there'll be a portal to take us there.

So, three days later it was time to gather in the Sultan's palace where he saw me, Rakeesh and Uhura who wants to go home too, off.

And he had a gift for me from Keapon Laffin! My gnome friend!

Then a hug which was sweet.

I'm a sap, I'm a sap.

Then we arrived in Tarna where we were met by Kreesha. Uhura headed out. So some introductory stuff and a warning:

Booo, when can I use magic safely in a town dammit.

I needed some time to explore and adjust to the new interface though it is very similar to King's Quest V and VI. And I had to check out Keapon's lovely wrapped gift!

Sure did explode in my face.

I was left with the wrapping paper... "The wrapping paper is all that remains of Keapon Laffin's gift. He certainly has a strange sense of humor." Maybe that'll have a use. Silly gnome.

As for the rest of my inventory: I had 200 dinars and some of my inventory carried over: the sapphire pin from the Katta, my pills, a waterskin, and my dagger. I had a note from Shema to deliver to Shallah. I had some Spim which is rations. I'm pretty sure the reward for saving the Emir was supposed to be 1000 dinars though. Hmph, where's the rest of my money? Actually I do wonder how long our hero got to stay in Shapeir between QFG 2 and 3.

I had to start doing all the looking around.

Then it was time to chat with Rakeesh and Kreesha (their names are anagrams of each other...). You can also do the talk icon on yourself to greet and tell about stuff. But talking pulls up a dialogue tree of options.

The city and land around it is called Tarna and ruled by the Liontaurs. Uhura and her baby boy, Simba, have returned to her home, the Simbani village and we'll be going there in a few days to learn more about the war between the Simbani and the Leopardmen. In two days Rakeesh wants me to come with him to the Council of Judgement to attempt speaking to them of peace.

Rakeesh and Kreesha are lifemates. Kreesha is the magic council member in the Council of Judgement. Rakeesh's brother Rajah, is the King of Tarna and he's pretty hot-headed.

I could ask her about magic too and she said could teach me a spell that would allow me to channel my energy...! But not yet.

In the meantime it was time to explore Tarna, and leave Rakeesh and Kreesha to have some alone time together. Kreesha also had a room reserved for me at the inn.

Here, there's the King's Chambers up the stairs and on this level, the Apothecary and the Inn.

I went to the Apothecary first...

His name is Salim. Before I talked to him I had to look around as always.

That was the main highlight.

I tried the use icon on him:

Then I talked to this groovy...guy...radical, maaan. Just trying to get his vibe across here. So, it is the Apothecary, but he calls it Salim's Holistic Health and Happiness Eclectic Energy Emporium. He carries crystals and promotes peace and pyramid power...

He can't sell healing pills right now though. He needs the feather of a honey bird which I have to get non-violently or it won't work. That's one quest to add to the to-do list I suppose.

I could also ask about potions and lo and behold what should come up but a Dispel Potion. He was, of course, missing some ingredients: water from the Pool of Peace, a gift from the Heart of the World, and the fruit of a venomous vine. I guess Dispel Potions are just a tradition and staple of the series but they're made differently everywhere. Regional recipes I guess.

I could ask him about each, and in regards to the fruit of the venomous vine, got the best thing he's said yet:

One of the conversation topics was plants which led him to talking about a dream he had of being in a desert place and he was dancing with this tree when it changed. Suddenly the tree was like a woman and beautiful and it was magical. That gave me the option tell him about Julanar and how I'd helped her regain some hope. He was thrilled; the girl of his dreams was real! He planned to leave for Shapeir on the next caravan.

I... can't say he'd be my first choice to send to her, but hopefully for her sake it somehow works out? Whether or not anything further comes of it, the continuity is nice at any rate.

I tried to make a purchase just to see my options, but I needed to change my money first.

I popped by the inn just to see it for now.

There was a bulletin board that had The Laws of Tarna:

A silly clown!

I chatted with the welcome woman, whose name turned out to be Janna Jamil, and learned that before I came the rulers of Tarna had sent out a party of diplomats to the Leopardmen, but only one person returned, Kharib, and he's not well now.

Kreesha's paying for my room, but I have to pay for meals... once I have the right currency. For now it just got added to my room charge. Thanks Kreesha!

It was time to poke into the bazaar.

Good ol' traditional moose head.

We've got a honey seller.

I could also ask about the honey bird. The bird gets people to follow it to a hive and then waits for the person to take honey from it and leave some for the bird. Maybe if I bought honey I could just use that as a lure to get a feather? I needed the right money though. There was also a rumour that Leopardmen are killing the Simbani people.

There was an oil salesman selling virgin olive oil. There was a rumour that the king of Tarna wants them to go to war in order drive all the humans away from city forever. A lot of liontaurs still don't get on with humans, but I don't think that particular rumour is exactly true. Or at least if the war was to be against the leopardmen that wouldn't be against the humans here.

Carrying on to the Junk salesmen, who are straight up a reference to Sanford and Son, which is a sitcom I'm not really familiar with, but looking it up, yeah that's basically just them.

There was a very enthusiastic weapon seller who tried to advertise his wares when I got close without my even talking to him. I didn't need weapons right now though.

I headed into the next area and ran into an altercation.

I chased after him into the next screen where a guard caught him and took us both to the Hall of Judgement.

The Council determined the thief, Harami, broke the laws and showed himself without honor. He was just scornful and then named honorless and sent away.

I was thanked for aiding the guards and was sent with Rakeesh to see the king, Rajah Sah Tarna.

I cannot for the life me figure out what's going on withe liontaur lady on the right. You can see where the other has her leg bent but this one is like serpent liontaur. Very strange. Anyway.

Rajah was very prickly and unimpressed with me. "Kreesha is the magic user of this land. Do you think you can out-enchant her?" And he was not too happy with Rakeesh either.

Rakeesh's daughter, Reeshaka, had led the peace mission that only had one survivor, so she's presumed dead. Rakeesh pointed out they still don't know exactly what happened and doesn't want to start a war and take more lives over this. I had the opportunity to defend Rakeesh. Rajah continued to not be particularly impressed, and I was told to leave them to their discussions.

Reeshaka would be Rajah's niece so he certainly has the right to be angry. He was still being a dick though. And war mongering isn't gonna help things.

But, there was nothing more for me to do there, so it was back out to continue exploring the bazaar. So, while my day is dwindling away next time it's time to get money changed and if there's time go shopping. Otherwise, bed time then shopping. Shopping will happen.

We don't have to be Right, we just have to Love Right, and we will Love Perfectly.

Over this Easter weekend, I have been feeling a great sense of dread along with a deep sorrow which I could not explain. It is the first time in my life that I am re-living this last walk with our Lord Jesus, and it touched me so deeply that I myself had the same anxiety and fear on Friday night, up until around 3 pm on Saturday while I was sitting waiting in queue for a swab test. I suddenly felt like all hope was gone from me, and that I had been absolutely forsaken and a part of me just died.

Then I was lost, and looking for something, I couldn't find God and I couldn't find Jesus, I started looking for the right verse or right Word, or the Calling from God to revive me. I prayed and I thought all night and I couldn't find one single thing until late last night when I opened this journal and saw my post in the morning, Love is the only Way.... and then I found a verse that could finally put me to sleep, also about why we have to Love... at the time it feel like such a big burden, especially when we have to Love the ones that have hurt us and caused us irreversible pain. But still, that verse gave me the peace I needed to go to sleep.

Then today, at our church's Easter Service, God's Message was finally delivered to me. I recognised it immediately. As soon as it was delivered, I realised, this is it. The Way to start being able to truly love unconditionally and perfectly.

It is 3 important points, it is so simple, yet not easy to do. I have seen this about 2 months ago, but it did not call out to me as strongly as it did today, and I believe it is because, now, I am ready for it. Now, God has finally prepped me enough to learn this wisdom.

Give up the Right to be Angry

1 John 4:18 "There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear"

Give up the Right to be Appreciated

Mark 9:35 "Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all."

Give up the Right to be Right

Philippians 2:3 "Don't be selfish; don't try to impress others. Be humble, thinking of others as better than yourselves"

This time, I will dwell on this and call upon this log to remind myself everytime I feel I am about to lose myself.

I am grateful to our Heavenly Father for guiding me to this church and for bestowing me with endless grace and blessings, constantly guiding me towards the life of our Lord Saviour, Jesus Christ.

This Easter I learnt the true meaning behind the celebration and as I rejoice at the resurrection of our Lord, I celebrate as well for myself to have found a new way to live. To live like Jesus, I must first Love as Jesus does.

On the other end of the line, Cinder let out a tight sigh. “Yeah. Okay, well—I’m in a difficult position right now. I’m balancing a lot. So, that wasn’t, you know, directed at you or whatever… I’m just trying to deliver you to Atlas. That’s all.”

“Yeah,” Glynda said. “This apology sucks.”

CINDER FALL TRIES TO HAVE MANNERS. AND FAILS. BUT SHE TRIES.

it’s been a WHILE but i’m STILL HERE!!!!!!!!! also i’m a little late to the draw and also unlike w/ prior chaps i did actually read this one when it came out so i’ve had my first run already. BUT that means i actually get 2 Focus so lets get this party started

so we’re now entering into the New Umbraroot Arc which Frightens me on a deep and intrinsic scale because now i have no padding to ready me for whatever the Hell is going to occur, but i do know it will be gay(er) than the current content was (is/shall be) and here’s the proof

We left a funny taste in her mouth, almost as strange as when Cinder had said our. She tried not to examine it too closely.

In the silence that followed, Glynda thought of the stunted horns jutting above Cinder's hairline at the restaurant.

Glynda murmured, "That’s a horrible thing to say."

"Don’t start." There was no concession in her words. “I mean it.”

“...I just didn’t expect that from you.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

There was something in Cinder’s tone that told Glynda that nothing she said would be correct. She said nothing.

cinder’s! rank! opinions! time! honestly this section victimises me the MOST as i very famously cried over an earlier section in which cinder thought abt all the faunus she grew up with, so i know that kc and diesel were looking to hurt me directly. that said i DO find it funny that cinder, yet again, looks like a pile of shit. she can’t do anything right. naturally inclined to be the villain completely unintentionally. what a moron.

A harsh laugh. “What do you think we are, friends?”

Glynda thought of Ozpin. It wasn’t a comforting thought—more like the memory of a near-accident, like sliding on ice and feeling the world shift beneath you. It was a flinch-thought, and it would have made her miserable instead of just homesick had she not shut it out so quickly.

god the writing in this fic is so especially pristine. everything feels so real and visceral and you just know Exactly how that feels. it’s brilliantly punchy and i adore the way u get have the exact sensation click into place. it’s SO good.

She wondered if it was the same moon Bacia and Vivienne had looked upon. If they had felt the same beneath its pale light. The Great War had seen two shatterings of the moon, so perhaps it had appeared different, but… Glynda couldn’t help but wish that it was something they shared, even lifetimes apart.

Glynda closed her eyes and tried to feel out that instinctual power within her. Tried to know herself better. It resonated around her like a water in a tank, nearly palpable.

again this is just GREAT storytelling. i just LOVE how well kc and diesel turn abstract ideas into such physical manifestations it’s completely unreal. r y’all seein this shit???

i love that glynda is abt as knowledgeable abt little jumps like this as the reader is. are we surprised as a reader? yes. is glynda also surprised? HELL YEAH SHE IS. SHE AIN’T GOT A FUCKIN CLUE MY DUDE.

Remembering the notes to herself not to trust Winter, Glynda opened the log hesitantly.

The indicator showed this wasn’t the first time Glynda had accessed the message. She couldn’t remember doing so.

Bubbles appeared, showing that Cinder was typing. Glynda waited.

And waited.

The bubbles appeared and disappeared four times.

She flipped back to Cinder’s conversation and found that, after all that time, Cinder had finally settled on a reply.

It said:

“Good.”

i just had to pair these up for a second if only to say: dis me lol

okay let’s double back for a second just to cover this Juicy Lore:

If you’d like, I can arrange a bouquet of flowers to be left at your mothers’ memorial site. My thoughts are with you.”

For a long moment, Glynda simply stared at the screen. [...] In quick succession, she realized that it had been sixteen days since she’d met with Cinder in the restaurant and that it was soon to be the anniversary of her mothers’ deaths.

Glynda picked herself up from the armchair, neat and tidy, and disassembled into bed, pulling the covers up to her throat. With her Semblance, she turned off the lights. She closed her eyes.

It was quiet. Cold. The only thing she felt was the weight of her soul.

Her Scroll buzzed. Glynda answered it.

“Glynda.” It was Cinder. “I can feel that.”

okay following on from cinder’s text message, i just. love that cinder’s having such direct repercussions to her shitty shitty actions. like this is all tying together in some 👈😎👈 instances but having cinder be her usual callous self and having to literally turn around and start fucking Being Nice For Once is VERY gratifying. fuck you you lil round-faced one-braincelled baby. time to learn to have some Manners. jgdsfghsdfghfjd

She’d simply resigned to the loneliness of having no one to trust but Cinder, and then, not even having her.

Glynda chided herself; Cinder Fall wasn’t capable of remorse, but she was more than capable of simple math. It seemed the worse she treated Glynda, the worse she herself would feel.

There was a shift, like Cinder was rolling over, or maybe propping herself up. Was she in bed also? It triggered the remembrance of Glynda’s own physicality, and she turned over as well, searching in the dark for the nightstand and the lamp upon it. The light clicked on. The room brightened. Glynda settled in, ready.

OOOOOH THE PARALLELS. glynda turning the lights off and sinking into darkness and the void versus perking up and sitting up and turning the lights on when talking to cinder!!!!!!! POETIC CINEMA. OOF. OOF. HOW DOES FIFTEEN POINTS OF LOVE TASTE.

“Great! Lovely. Glad to hear it.” Fangs rounded out the words like scissors. A pleasant sense of satisfaction unfurled in Glynda’s chest. “So, once upon a fucking time—”

there were two gays and they were enemies to lovers but didnt know it yet. but they will be.

THATS CHAPTER 14 BABEY!!!!!!!! i LOVED this chap and i can rly feel kc and diesel gearing up for umbraroot. its great being able to like. feel the shift of focus goin on here and im SO ready to see this arc play out. once again offal hunt is the best fic ever made. this is a fact.

On the shoulders of giants

(the following story was not written by me. It is from the game “Stellaris” but it reminded me of the whole space ork thing so I thought I would share it. I have changed a few minor elements, mainly removing the gamey parts from it and added a few headers to make it work a bit better. None of the actual story elements have been changed)

Ours is a history of oddities and inconsistencies. We have found ancient city ruins older than some archaeological excavations of primitive villages. We have unearthed saws, axes and even rifles which far pre-date stone-tipped spears and bows.

A peculiar history did not, however, prevent us from stepping readily into a futuristic era of spaceflight. We have now managed to truly escape the gravity of our home planet, aiming for other planets and bodies in our solar system, and beyond.

However, we had scarcely left the atmosphere before the oddities emerged anew; strange signals of alien origin coming from within our own solar system…

Extra Terrestrial Research Department: Report on investigation of anomalous signals on Luna.

A string of strange anomalous readings is emanating from the surface of Luna, our very own moon. We have decided to launch a surface excursion to find out more.

Log 1: The first, small step

A base of operations has been set up on the surface of the moon, and several teams are now en route to the various anomaly sites that our scanners picked up.

The significance of this mystery is simply unparalleled, and the scientific community is absolutely buzzing with theories and anticipation over what we might uncover.

Log 2: Tracking the signal

Most excursion teams have reached their destinations and reported back.

Artifacts buried in the ground have been uncovered. Lead Scientist Veldanura describes them as “highly accurate, galactic laser pointers” – ancient machines that are emitting a strong, tight ultraviolet beam out into space for purposes unknown.

It is a bittersweet discovery; the profound, exhilarating importance of alien artifacts countered by their seemingly arbitrary purpose.

Log 3: It’s a dud

Despite our best efforts, the excavation and analysis of the alien indicators on the surface of Luna have failed to deliver any relevant result.

The archaeological teams have calculated and followed the paths of the alien signal beams, but nothing is being pointed at other than empty space.

Lead Scientist Veldanura has requested more time; convinced that something has been missed.

Log 4: Wind back and Proceed

Breakthrough!

Study of the surface has revealed that Luna was hit eons ago by a small asteroid. The impact of this asteroid was not enough to obliterate the moon, but did nudge it a fraction out of its original orbit. By analyzing the impact the scientists have managed to calculate the moon’s initial position and rotation, and used that data to ‘rewind’ the alien indicators to their original position.

And there it was: the alien indicator beams suddenly converging on another planet in our system: Triton, the largest natural satellite of Neptune.

The previously discovered alien indicators are pointing at Triton, and we should go down on the surface and investigate further.

Log 1: Let’s see what we got

Our archaeological teams have started their work down on Triton. Seismographic readings quickly isolated a hollow area underground on the rough location indicated by the alien indicates previously discovered.

The underground expanse is vast, and despite its mysterious nature one thing is beyond doubt of any of our experts: it’s not natural. Someone built it with a specific purpose in mind.

Log 2: Proving grounds

The excavation crew finally reached what turned out to be a massive underground structure. Vast, angular halls and tunnels were explored. A complete lack of adornment made it difficult to establish the purpose of the structure.

When Lead Scientist Veldanura entered what appeared to be the main chamber, a deep sound suddenly reverberated. Initially just thundering noise, the sound slowly contorted until an incorporeal voice spoke a single sentence in our language:

“Are you ready?”

The booming voice was followed by deep rumble as one of the giant walls slowly slid away to reveal a dark corridor. Our archaeologists eagerly went inside.

Log 3: Trials

The dark corridor led to an empty, round chamber. Stepping inside, the disembodied voice spoke yet again, stating that “only the deserving may continue”.

Short corridors connected the round camber to three other, small rooms -each containing some kind of physics-oriented problem.

Lead Scientist Veldanura believes that these are scientific riddles that – once solved – may provoke some reaction in the structure, but it is all speculation.

Log 4: Full of Wonders

All three science puzzles have been completed in the mysterious chambers deep underground the surface of Triton.

Just as Lead Scientist Veldanura suspected, the structure responded to the correct solutions for the alien trials. As the last riddle was solved, a cloudy holographic projection exploded to life in the main chamber. It was an incredibly high-resolution depiction of our solar system, with one position indicated by a bright point of light: Venus.

Following the discoveries on Triton, our scanners have picked up something deep beneath the surface of Venus.

Log 1: Sealed bunker

After a long, arduous period of digging deep into the crust of Venus the excavation team reached another underground structure.

Despite readings indicating that this structure is hollow, no entry point can be found. It appears hermetically sealed, and the protective walls are made of an unknown material with extreme structural integrity. Conventional digging equipment has so far ben unable to even scratch it.

It will require some serious effort to get through, but the project is already underway.

Log 2: Bunker debunked

After months of hard work, using a powerful beam which combines intense fusion heat with high-frequency vibration, the excavation team has finally managed to crack the underground structure.

As soon as the vault was cracked, the disembodied voice-recording spoke again. It declared that our determination had been proven, that another trial had been completed, and that we were to be rewarded accordingly.

And so, we were. The bunker contained all sorts of valuables, hitherto unknown technologies which can be investigated further, and a new set of coordinates.

Following the discoveries on Venus, our scanners have picked up something deep beneath the surface of Io.

Log 1: Very complex

Extensive seismographic readings have been compiled into a highly accurate visual model of the underground structure on Io.

It appears to be a vast network of angular corridors, each several kilometers long. The entire structure is mostly corridors, with the exception of one open space at the bottom of the building.

More than that cannot be interpreted until we reach and investigate the site properly.

Log 2: Endless memorial

The excavation team finally breached the underground complex, and entered the empty corridors.

The long tunnels were completely empty. On closer inspection the walls appeared to be covered in small, strange inscriptions. Translation of the alien language was a highly confusing process, until it was discovered that the writing consisted of nothing but alien names, numbering in the millions.

Archaeologists are now pressing onwards to the bottom chamber, but their effort is hindered by caved in corridors which need to be cleared.

Log 3: Admitting defeat

Our archaeological team has reached the bottom chamber of the memorial structure. There they found an ancient, and partially intact, recorded message; translation suggests this is some kind of personal debriefing:

“We failed. The Relentless cut through our entire navy without even slowing down. All is lost now. We will die here, in these walls of tribute to fallen brethren.

We fear for the lives of our wards, The Relentless will find them, and then they…”

There is no sign of a struggle. No bodies. Only empty halls and the silence of the ones who perished.

Log 4: Addendum

Lead Scientist Veldanura wanted to comb through every nook and cranny of the memorial site. It paid off: a small device was discovered in one of the corridors. A small fragment of information could be salvaged from it:

“…ould work! With their mental faculties shut off – their very intellect removed – they would pose no threat.

It must be enough. It’s the only thing left that we can do.”

The device also included some new coordinates. Veldanura would like to investigate these as soon as possible.

Scanner readings from orbit indicate that there is a structure down on the planet. Unlike the previous ones, this one is not buried underground.

Log 1: Last bastion

There was no need for shovels or drilling lasers this time around. Lead Scientist Veldanura and the archaeology team simply walked into the alien ruin.

The site is very old - more than a thousand years, but fairly well kept. It appears to be some kind of staging area, built for a specific purpose. There are several laboratories and large storage hangers.

The team has also found a digital archive server. It’s offline, but appears fairly intact. Hopefully it will fill in the blanks regarding our lost Benefactors.

Log 2: Desperate measures.

The science team managed to get the digital archives up and running. They exclusively contained arbitrary logs, which required some liberal interpretation.

The phrase ‘Mind-Wipe Initiative’ occurs frequently throughout these logs, and it appears to have been the specific focus of research at this location. Apparently the Benefactors developed the technology by which they could manipulate the effectiveness of mental faculties, but how or for what purpose remains unknown.

Log 3: Crescendo!

The archaeological team has found another ancient digital archive. This too consisted mostly of logs, but there was one journal entry of particular interest:

“The ship has taken off. We know they’ll succeed, but there was no sense of hope or high spirits as they left. We know that the mission and the work we’ve done here are wrong… Despicable.

But the alternative… The alternative is worse.”

This is also one of the last entries found at the ancient facility. Not much of a closure, but at least plenty of technological discoveries were made.

Log 4: Aftermath

While clearing out the storage areas, one of the workers found a small device of unknown origin. It was brought to Lead Scientist Veldanura and turned out to be a recording device. It was badly damaged, but a small snippet of dialog was saved:

“…houldn’t be forgotten – someone has to come clean and speak up for them. History may endure, but my conscience cannot”

Further investigation led to the discovery of an encrypted set of coordinates.

The coordinates point to a seemingly arbitrary spot on the surface of Mercury. Closer scans indicate nothing out of the ordinary.

Log 1: Hidden cave

The team we sent down to the surface of Mercury encountered far more obstacles than anticipated.

The coordinates we discovered on Europa pointed to an especially craggy part of Mercury, where the landscape was filled with vertical stone surfaces and deep fissures.

The team pressed on, and eventually reached the indicated location: a natural cave formation. A base of operations has been set up and further investigation will begin shortly.

Log 2: Cold, hard cache

The archaeological team that began investigating the natural cave a few months ago has reported back. They found a tremendous, abandoned stockpile of valuable resources. There were no doors, no locks and no traps – just a cave full of industrial valuables.

Lead Scientist Veldanura requests permission to investigate further still. Plentiful as it may be, the obviousness of the treasure has evoked a theory that this cache is merely a ruse – that another type of treasure is yet to be found.

Log 3: Dirty past

The resource cache was indeed just a distraction. The real treasure lay behind a hidden door: a final message, recorded by one of the Benefactor aliens.

Eons ago they were at war with a merciless alien race known as “The Relentless”. Entire civilizations had already perished in the Relentless’ wake, and the Benefactors were next. The desperate Benefactors sought their last resort, before all would be lost. They succeeded with a device that ravaged the Relentless’ neurological physique, instantaneously primitivizing an entire race.

Robbed of their bloodthirsty intellect, The Relentless became docile and harmless. The Benefactors rounded them up and exiled them to a planet we know as Earth.

The Relentless are our ancestors.

Log 4: Next step

Finally, the inconsistencies in our history have been explained, using these lost chapters from our true heritage. We had once believed that the advancement of our civilization came of our own accord – solitary and independent. Now we know that all this time, we had been standing on the shoulders of giants.

We cannot change the past. We reconcile and we move on – accepting our past not as a dark burden, but as a stepping stone on our path forward into the future.

It is our time to become giants.

Log 220

FTL: I am making this log earlier than I typically do, as I feel it is necessary due to the current situation.

FTL: Update: I have directed some of LIFEGIVER's purposed organisms to the containment chamber where FTLR-3 lies. It has been eradicated. All that I can do is wait and prepare for the next cycle. See if my suspicions are correct.

FTL: I have come up with two plans.

FTL: Plan 1: Somehow get Eternal Anomaly to explain to me how she removes creatures from the timeline. I highly doubt that this would work, so this is only the preliminary plan that I am not relying upon. If they do explain, which is very unlikely (especially considering that they just threatened to kill me), that will make all of this a lot easier. But as I know it won't work, I do have a back-up plan that is, in reality, the main plan.

FTL: Plan 2: This one will take a while. But if all my assumptions are correct, it will work. This plan is largely inspired by Significantly Important Utility's suggestions on what I should do with my current situation. I will attempt to tame FTLR-3 in some fashion. Preferably make it know not to consume something if I tell it not to. I will engineer a messenger slugcat, give them a pearl containing a description of my current situation and this plan, and send them over to Songs of the Negative Sunlight.

FTL: If my inferences about Songs of the Negative Sunlight's current situation are correct, then xi is on the brink of death (well. As close to death as an Iterator can get.) due to Void fluid. Specifically, the purified Void fluid that powered xim. I believe that xi was messing about with it - xi never like xir secondary purpose, for some reason - and the transporters broke, flooding xir structure with it. Mass amounts of purified Void fluid regains the corrosivity that Void fluid has, which I believe is slowly killing xim. Of course, this is all assumption, and I could be wrong. I am fairly sure though. I will message the other members of my Local Group and ask them for what they know of Songs of the Negative Sunlight's situation.

FTL: I am unsure whether corrosive purified Void fluid is capable of Ascending creatures, but I can only hope that that is the case. As unfortunate as Songs of the Negative Sunlight's situation is, there isn't much I can do. But I can utilise it to my benefit. Hopefully xi is still conscious enough to reply with a confirmation of xir status. If my beliefs are correct, I will engineer a sort of capsule containing FTLR-3 to be delivered via purposed organism to Songs of the Negative Sunlight. There it will be thrown in the Void fluid that supposedly floods xir structure.

FTL: Even if the Void fluid does not have the capacity to Ascend beings, FTLR-3 will still be neutralised as it will continue to be destroyed in the Void fluid every cycle. It will be let free in Songs of the Negative Sunlight, where it will hopefully set its reawakening point in case the Void fluid doesn't Ascend it. I hope that the this is an unnecessary precaution as such measures are merely temporary. I'm afraid that it will learn. It will recognise the pattern and start avoiding the Void fluid. In which case, well. Back to the current potential situation but even worse.

FTL: This is a flimsy plan reliant upon many presumptions, and I despise that fact. I also hate to use Songs of the Negative Sunlight's situation like this. I'm sure xi'll understand. I hope xi does. This is the only proper solution I have.

FTL: ...I will get to work on Plan 2 right now. I have no time.

Episode 81: Same Old World

”I’ve got nowhere to go.”

It’s impossible to overstate how important Mirror Gem was in redirecting the entire series from the daily adventures of a magical kid to a long-term story about (among many other things) how sins of the past loom over the present. But I’ve certainly tried! I’ve gone on about the episode’s impact at length in multiple reviews, but it bears repeating again here, because Same Old World is where Lapis Lazuli finally starts to shift from Important Character to regular fixture.

For someone that leaves such a lasting impression, we don’t see much of Lapis until Season 3. After she flies away healed in Ocean Gem, we catch a glimpse of her in The Message, where she once again has a huge impact for her small amount of time on screen. This frantic, confused version of Lapis is what we’ll get in The Return and Jailbreak and Chille Tid, but we see her get angrier with each appearance as she’s forced to face trial after trial. Her suffering was supposed to be over, but it keeps happening, and by the time she’s finally free again it makes sense that her first instinct is to get the hell off this planet.

But the saddest thing about Lapis isn’t her horrible luck, even if her ordeals are arguably more intense than any other character’s. It’s that she’s had to face these ordeals alone. The Crystal Gems and the Off-Colors are ragtag teams of outcasts, but they still have each other. Homeworlders like the Diamonds and their underlings, even the wandering Jasper, fit in just fine with an established society. Peridot makes a relatively smooth transition from the latter to the former. But Lapis’s comfort zone only exists in a past that will never come back. Steven may be the only Gem with parents, but the tragedy of Lapis Lazuli is that she’s an orphan. Only in Spinel do we meet another Gem cursed with such abandonment.

Why does Lapis attach herself so strongly to Steven, to the point where she’s willing to risk everything to protect him from Homeworld? For the same reason she eventually latches onto Jasper despite knowing that it’s toxic: because she has nobody else. And that isolation, rather than the specific injustices she has faced, is the trauma she’s actually forced to overcome starting in Season 3, beginning with Peridot in our next episode. But for now, Same Old World does a brilliant job establishing who this character is (a lost, lonely soul) and what she needs (a home and a family) so that she can make a change. And it does this not by showing her wallowing, but rather, for the first time since Ocean Gem, by showing her happy.

It says everything about Lapis that she sincerely enjoys hanging out with Steven. Despite her antisocial tendencies, she doesn’t hate people, she just doesn’t trust them (and for good reason). By freeing her in Mirror Gem and healing her in Ocean Gem, and by bonding with her in both episodes through open-hearted conversation, Steven earned her friendship. And an arc where Lapis finds the strength to open up to others benefits from our knowledge that she’s already capable of doing so, so that’s what Same Old World does. There’s a light at the end of the tunnel, and knowing this makes it even harder to watch when she stumbles, but all the more rewarding when she starts to come out of her shell around more people.

Lapis’s newfound exuberance is best conveyed by Aivi and Surasshu, who modify her theme (still my favorite) from its typically haunting or mystical tone to a breezy, adventurous anthem. Lapis began as a source of wonder for the audience, so it’s great to see her actually feel that wonder herself as she learns more about the planet that held her prisoner for so long.

Steven’s narration gets funnier and funnier as they travel from the woods to Empire City to Jersey; even a show this sweet can’t help but make fun of New Jersey. While Empire City is a clear blend of New York and Paris, with a little Vegas thrown in judging by the town motto, and this universe has locations like Delmarva and Keystone and Aqua Mexico, I love that Jersey is just...Jersey.

Further signs that this is a setup episode are found in the Empire City segment, and not just because we go back there in Mr. Greg. We’ve already seen Peridot living it up in the barn, and soon enough she and Lapis will be roommates in the way Steven foreshadows here. But more importantly, he’s using the language of television, which Lapis might not understand now, but very soon will.

Of course, an episode where Lapis is chipper throughout would be disingenuous, and boy does Same Old World deliver on the inevitable gut punch. We get one last moment of whimsy as the two head over the ocean, but the gleeful variant of her theme fades away as they encounter the Galaxy Warp.

Considering the way Pearl left Steven hanging in Rose’s Scabbard, there was a very real chance Lapis would drop him here as she has a minor panic attack, and the suspense allows us to feel all the weight of Lapis’s problems rushing back after a day of fun. It might not sound like a big deal, but this episode needs us to switch from happy and peaceful to antsy and pensive within seconds to keep the pacing solid, and it’s amazing that it does so without giving us even a hint of whiplash.

The return of Lapis’s hollow eyes is a nice touch, and leads us into a flashback that efficiently and stylishly shows us the depths of our hero’s misfortune. She wasn’t a Homeworld zealot but a noncombatant, and her cracking was a complete accident caused by a nameless, unidentifiable Gem. There’s no twist or big moment, simply a series of events outside of her control that built upon each other to ruin her life. This isn’t to say we don’t get lore—the Gem who poofed Lapis is our first glimpse at a bismuth, perhaps the Bismuth, and we see the Diamonds’ corruption attack with a quick taste of their theme—but the message here is that Lapis’s fate served no great purpose, and wasn’t even an intentional punishment. Sometimes life just kicks the shit out of you for no reason.

Lapis is clearly used to it at this point, shrugging off how horrible her life has been before she tries to leave at the beginning of the episode and rejecting Steven’s sweet offer to take a minute at the end of it. This isn’t to say she isn’t upset, but there’s a sense of acceptance that her life will continue to be miserable no matter what, which is why it’s so important that Steven doesn’t just tell her that she’s welcome on Earth, but that Earth is a place that allows change. He tells somebody who had no control for ages, then went on a power trip as soon as she had the opportunity to dominate somebody else, that she finally has the opportunity to make a healthy choice. And she takes it.

Peridot obviously becomes a bigger factor in our next episode, but she’s established quite well in the first act so that her “surprise” appearance at the end feels earned; why would she have gone away in the day or so that Steven and Lapis went exploring? Lapis’s petulant reaction to sharing her new home with Peridot gives us one last bit of foreshadowing for her arc: her adjustment to Earth transforms her into an angsty teen.

I can imagine this characterization disappointed some people; certain fans are bound to insert their own concepts into a character as mysterious as Lapis, which of course makes any divergence from this headcanon a disappointment. But the idea that Lapis’s Daria Phase comes out of nowhere is baffling to me. Really, what better way to portray someone whose life feels like one crisis after another inflicted by forces beyond their control than as a teenager?

Lapis Lazuli rarely displays overt happiness after Same Old World, and will quickly develop a sardonic sense of humor that genuine playfulness occasionally escapes from. But it nonetheless sets the stage for her potential before Barn Mates wisely reminds us that her journey towards trusting others won’t be a walk in the park.

(And then we get a walk in the ballpark. Season 3 picks up quick once it gets rolling.)

Future Vision!

I already mentioned Empire City, Bismuth, and the Diamond Corruption, but it’s also quietly sweet to rewatch this episode after we learn Lapis actually held onto Steven’s leaf in Beta.

I hinted at it a little, but there are definitely echoes of Lapis’s story in Spinel’s, with the major difference being Lapis’s series of misfortunes versus Spinel’s single act of betrayal. Both endured thousands of years of solitude, both attack others on instinct as a result, and both are moved by Steven preaching the power of change.

If every pork chop were perfect, we wouldn’t have inconsistencies…

It’s weird that there’s never any follow-up on Lapis’s poofing, considering she starts hanging out with Bismuth after Change Your Mind. Even if it was a different bismuth, that’s still worth a joke or something.

We’re the one, we’re the ONE! TWO! THREE! FOUR!

Such a great Lapis episode. If it had a song it might be even higher up, but it still holds its own through great characterization, great music, and awesome setup for her new arc.

Stand and Deliver

I am, practically speaking a math teacher. Technically speaking, I am a mild/moderate special ed teacher, but I teach math, to special ed kids, mostly.

Growing up, one movie I saw over, and over, and over again in school was Stand and Deliver. It was played almost every day we had a sub or the teacher didn’t have a plan, etc, etc etc. Then, my senior year my school theater program (of which I was highly involved) decided to do the play version. I essentially memorized that film. If you don’t know the movie, is carefully based off a true story of the famous math teacher, Jaime Escalante, an immigrant from Bolivia, whose teaches/coaches/mentors a handful of underserved high school students from a gang-ridden Garfield High School in LA into taking and passing the AP Calculus exam. These students success is so impressive, that they naturally are accused of cheating and the students have to retake a harder version of the test to indeed prove they do know math that well.

Anyway, now that I am working math students, I asked myself, should I show the movie to my students? Somehow no one in my school seemed to know about the film. I’m sure things have changed in the 15 years since my own high school experience, and I’m in a different demographic. So I researched the movie carefully and how different educators felt about it.

I ended up reading a lot about Jaime Escalante and the true story the film was based on. It was actually pretty close, a lot closer than your usual Hollywood films, it’s inaccuracies were few and not to dramatic.

I found one fascinating blog post all about why teachers should not show this film to their students. One major point was, while Jaime Escalante was clearly an amazing educator who lead his kids to success, he was very controversial. Not only at Garfield high school as is portrayed in the film for pushing his kids so hard and setting high expectations for him, but also for later in life as he supported “English Only” movement in education. Many had the opinion that such an outlook is oppressive to students learning English as a second language. Most of the blog readers I read who said this, were like me, white, and native English speakers. I found this fascinating. I don’t necessarily agree with the English only movement, I don’t have an opinion and don’t think it’s my place to form one at this time. However, I think it’s possible to separate one person’s endeavor from another and appreciate one without the other. For example, I do in fact like Einstein’s general theory of relativity, however Albert was a huge jerk to his first wife, Meliva (whose name appears on one of the early drafts as its often said she helped with the math involved) and left her penniless with 3 children he refused to support for over a decade. Still Albert Einstein did do an amazing job of figuring out, testing, and working on this theory and that’s still amazing and inspiring. So I don’t think that was a valid reason to not watch it.

Another educator wrote that Stand and Deliver was in the same spirit of “Dangerous Minds” which is definitely a movie about white saviorism. That movie, whose title alone offends me, also based on a true story, is about a white lady who comes to a gang-ridden high school and teaches English to underserved populations and like reduces gang violence or something (it’s been a while). That of course is a theme I need to avoid at all costs, savorism is a horrifying myth I seen projected onto my job, more on that later. For more fun we can watch the SNL skit “Pretty White Lady.”

However, Stand and Deliver is not the same as Dangerous Minds. The teacher is not a white person, but an immigrant himself who is technically classified as Latino. Okay, yes Bolivia is a very different country than say Mexico, or the other countries my students, or his, may come from. And I’m sure they don’t speak the same type of Spanish is Bolivia then say other countries, but still he’s an immigrant literally speaking the same language as his students.

Also, the other factor I had to point out, is the math in Stand and Deliver, is actually very real math. In college I learned an excellent short cut to integration by parts, that my professors learned from the movie. Today things are a lot better, but in that era, the math in movies, was actually quite fake, and bad. The math that is done in SD, is actually quite accurate. It’s real calculus, algebra, and trig. I figured if nothing else I could show it to my kids purely for them to try to recognize the math happening in the movie.

So I played the movie for my students and kept an open mind. I tried not to lecture or get to preachy toward them, I just wanted to be open to how they responded and then figure out if this was an advantageous movie for them to see. I did tell them to be aware of the various math tricks that happened in the movie.

Also it was my first time watching the movie since I learned calculus and was very excited to revisit these scenes and examine the math.

So here is the results:

1. My kids loved the movie. If for nothing else, they liked watching a movie in their math class. They would much rather watch movies then do math. It didn’t matter that the movie was nearly half a century old, still better than doing a worksheet or something.

2. One thing that I noticed is that a number of my kids liked that the movie was about latina/latino students. A number of my students have a lot of pride in their ethnicity. While there are a number of white people in the movie, they show up in minor supporting roles. Much like the reverse of what we see in Hollywood today. The movie really is about Latin Americans and they seemed to appreciate that they were in the foreground. The minute it started, one of my students who had never spoke to me before then, told me about one of his favorite old movies, that was casted completely by latino actors.

Furthermore, while Escalante is central, and he is portrayed as a hero, the real heroes of the movie are actually the high school students. It was very much a movie about kids in high school that delved into their family lives, dating issues, career decisions, conflicts with friends, etc. So it’s also a movie about high school kids.

3. In addition, despite the movie being around 40 years old, there were a couple of cultural elements my students seem to relate to. For example, the way my students greet each other and their particular hand shake (which I can’t do, but am learning, growth mindset) was done in the movie by adults. In the scene when Guadalupe was putting her brothers and sisters to bed, one of my students, who identifies as Mexican, called out, “That’s a Mexican household there. That’s my cousins” My students commented on what food was being cooked in scenes and compared it to their friends and families’ cooking. In the conflict scene where Escalante confronts the college board representatives about the accusations, they were super engaged, predicting, accurately what Escalante would say next and how they would have handled it. They pointed out to me we have the same desks as the students in the movie (facepalm here). They even explained to me, the subtext of the gang violence around Angel in the movie. This is something I didn’t see or understand when I was a kid. Of course this wasn’t the whole movie. A lot of the scenes culturally didn’t make sense to them, they were outdated, not relatable, or relevant.

4. They liked that the movie talked openly about racism. Going back to that scene where Escalante confronts the school board, they were super engaged. They got very excited when Escalante confronts the college board representatives, and the fact that they were sent out because of their distinct ethnic backgrounds. They liked that the racism was being called out rather than everyone turning a blind eye and closed mouth. Most of my students, regardless of ethnicity were engaged in that part.

Some of the kids though just spaced out, or were on their phones. I still have mixed feelings about the film, and would welcome other’s opinions about showing stand and deliver as a math teacher. It could be they were just grateful for a chill day.

For me, I noticed a few things.

1. The math is very accurate, and there are a couple of really cool math tricks happening in it. Namely integration by parts and the trick to multiply by nines using the fingers.

2. I liked that Escalante pointed out the Mayans understood the concept of zero long before europeans did. I personally also like pointing out white people did not invent algebra, middle easterners did. I think the history of math is important, but is often whitewashed to be just about the Greeks and Romans. Often in history, only white history is told and the accomplishments of groups is silenced.

3. The only math flaw I saw in the movie was when Escalante read ln(x-1) as the words L N. Any Calculus teacher worth their weight would of course read it as “The Natural Log of x minus 1.

4. There are all sorts of subtext I understand now as an adult, that I didn’t as a kid. The fact the Ana leaves the test early so others won’t be accused of cheating off of her, or that Guadalupe doesn’t have a place or time to study when she’s at home.

5. There is a honestly, the kids are clearly treated unfair by society and the movie points out this truth. The kids rise above by having to work extra hard to retake the test. I don’t know about the message of having the kids to work extra hard, I don’t want to get to preachy in my profession. But at least it acknowledges the unfair, racist elements the kids deal with, rather than be in denial or victim blaming I often see. It does have the message that the the kids are up to the challenge. They may have to work harder, but they are certainly underestimate by those in power over them. That makes an interesting point, but I’m not sure what it is yet.

Anyway, I showed the movie this year, and I would love other’s thoughts about it.

Waiting was driving us stir crazy. I needed to get out of the lab to think. Rae never even heard me leave. She was focused on who knows what on a half dozen monitors. It had been 2..3...4 days since our letter had been delivered. Nothing. I looked around and realized that I’d been walking longer than I thought. I was a block from my favorite diner. What the hell? Food might be a good idea. I headed inside and ordered a couple of bacon cheeseburgers and chili cheese fries. Who cared about cholesterol at a time like this?

I paced a bit as I waited for our food. The diner wasn’t very big, so I didn’t get far. Luckily I didn’t have long to wait. Just before I paid for the food I realized that we should have milkshakes to make this a proper balanced meal. I couldn’t help but smile as I watched the waitress mix our chocolate shakes. I bet now Rae would notice me. My phone buzzed angrily as I was heading out the door with our burgers. I moved out of the way and balanced everything in my left arm while I pulled my phone out.

It took me a minute to figure out what the text I was seeing meant. It was sent automatically so the sender was unfamiliar, robotic. After a few more moments it dawned on me. We had an email. Holy shit! The anonymous email we set up had received a message. I shoved my phone in my pocket, grabbed the food more securely and hurried back to the lab.

At the rate I was going, I was going to see monitors in my dreams. Well, until the nightmare started. The slightest beep had my attention bouncing from one monitor to another. I was going crazy waiting, or rather we were. It had been close to a week since we sent the letter and we still hadn’t gotten a reply. I was beginning to think that we were going to have to try something else. Not anything harmful, but a little more drastic? Something that they could not ignore. But I wasn’t sure what. I concentrated on the monitors, but my thoughts were a million miles away trying to figure out our next step.

I almost dropped the shakes three times in my hurry to get to Rae. I pushed open my office door with my shoulder calling her name. Before I could get to the computer, I had to drop off the food. Once my hands were free, I plunked down in front of my computer and logged in. Knee bouncing with anticipation. Where was Rae? “Rae! Get in here. We got a hit!” I swear my computer was taking three times as long to log in. I couldn’t stare at it. I’d lose my mind. I got up and quickly threw our food on plates and stabbed the milkshakes with straws. By the time I set everything on my desk next to my computer, my computer was logged in. “Rae!”

The first bellow of my name made me jump. Was that Kel yelling like that? I was half way out of my seat when the rest of the words that were yelled clicked. We got a hit? I looked back at the monitors I was watching, I missed something? When my name was yelled for a second time, I was out of the lab and heading to Kel’s office. I didn’t bother knocking. I walked in and crossed my arms, “What are you yelling about?”

I shoved a milkshake at her. “Your phone. Didn’t you get a message that our email address got a message?” She swiped the shake and plopped down beside me. “I stopped to get food. You’re welcome by the way,” I said as I pushed her burger closer to her. “As I was getting ready to leave, my phone went off. They responded.” I stuffed a french fry in my mouth and logged into the new email address as quickly as I could. There it was. A new email from what I guessed would be an equally anonymous email address. I took a drink of my shake and looked over at Rae. “Ready?” I slowly slid the mouse to her so she could open it.

I wasn’t sure I wanted to be the one to open it. This was important to me, but I knew it was more important to him. I took a sip of my shake, “Mmm, this is good thanks. And thank you for the food. As far as the question about my phone, it was in here. So, no I didn’t see the notification.” I had stalled opening it as long as I could. I took a deep breath and clicked on the email. When it opened, we both read over it in silence.

I furrowed my brow before looking at the email. It wasn’t like Rae to be away from her phone. That question would have to wait. I starting reading the reply. “Wait? Does that say what I think it says?” I reread the reply twice more. Was it really that easy? “Does that really say they want to set up a meeting?” I reached for my shake and took a big drink. Mind reeling with the possibilities.

I didn’t say anything at first. It did say they wanted to meet. But for some reason I couldn’t get excited about it. “Kel, wait a minute.” I ate a few fries before turning to him, “You don’t think this was a just a little too easy? I mean, yeah, I know it’s what we hoped for. But...I didn’t expect it to be this easy for them to agree to meet with us.” I wasn’t sure why, but I just felt that we should be really careful with how we moved forward.

There was the Rae I expected. I finished half my burger and wiped my mouth off before responding. “Read it again, Rae. They’re agreeing to meet at a very public location. I assume that they’ll want to check us out and make sure we are who we say we are. We do have the upper hand here, true?” I appreciated her concern and caution, but ultimately, I wanted to be able to help Alec and his wife. Maybe even Draven if we could. They’d gone through too much already. So much that was unnecessary.

I sighed, “I’ve read it 4 times over. I know what it says. I’m just saying we’d be stupid to think that just because it’s a public place doesn’t mean there isn’t a reason to be cautious. And how do you think we have the upper hand? They could easily agree to meet us, send someone else to the place and follow us back here when they don’t show. They didn’t survive this long by being careless, Kel. They have survived by being careful, just like us is all I’m saying.” Maybe my concern wasn’t warranted, but what does it hurt to be too careful? I started picking at my food, lost in thought.

I tilted my head and stared at her. “Rae, you do remember that we know who they are and what they look like, right? We’re at an advantage. They don’t know who we are. Are you suggesting that we send...I don’t know. A decoy?” I couldn’t figure out where this fear was coming from. Paranoia? Her nightmares again? But I was not going to let it stop me from contacting Alec or Draven. “Rae, you don’t have to be part of this. You know that, right? If you’re this worried, maybe you shouldn’t be.”

I shook my head, “That’s not what I meant. I was just saying we’d be crazy to think we have any advantage over them, especially Alec. I just think we need to be a little cautious and not think we can out smart them. That’s all.” I took a few bites of my burger and sighed, “We just need to be careful is all.” I reached for my shake and took a sip. “Thank you for the food. It was really good.”

“I’m not forgetting what Alec is, Rae. But I would rather deal with a vampire than The Gathering. As a child, I never imagined that all of the worst monsters in the world would be humans. But you and I have seen them. Worked beside them.” I finished my food and got up to toss my garbage. “What if….,” my thoughts and words trailed off as I slurped the last of my shake.

I sighed, “I wasn’t saying that you were forgetting what Alec is. I was just saying we shouldn’t let our guard down. That’s all.” I finished off my fries and took a sip of my shake, “I know that They are monsters, in every sense of the word. I know that They need to be brought down, but we don’t need to get ahead of ourselves and forget who we are dealing with on the other side of it.” I was quiet for a few moments and sighed, “What if what?”

“What if we set up some surveillance cameras at the location ahead of time? Would you feel better if you could watch it all?” Whether she would go for this or not, I was taking the meeting. I had to. I was partly responsible for what both Draven and Alec had gone through. I needed to try to fix it.

I thought about what he was saying and shook my head, “No, the owners of the place wouldn’t go for that. But, now that you mention it…” I got up and went over to the cabinet in the corner. I unlocked it with the only key for it, mine, and pulled out a package. I walked back over and sat down, handing the package to Kel. “I bought this a few months back, tweaked it a little,” I couldn’t help but smile, “I wasn’t sure if we would ever need them, but now it looks like the perfect time to use it.” I let him open the box and find the hidden camera and mic.

That you’re saying yes, let’s do this?” I set the camera and mic on the table between us. An eerie calm settling around me like a blanket.

Maybe something they say will help us later,” I shrugged.

I watched her shoulders fall as she put her leftovers away. She didn’t like this. Any of it. But she was still going to do her job. I turned back to the email. Already trying to figure out a response in my head. “You don’t have to like this, Rae. But I have to go. I have to help them. Especially if by doing so we can take down The Gathering for once and for all.” I looked over at her and gave her a quick smile. “The camera and mic are a good idea. Thank you.”

I nodded as I sat back beside him, “I know I don’t have to like it, and I don’t. I really don’t. I think it’s just way too easy that they agreed so quickly to meet us. But I know you are going to do this, no matter what I say, so I might as well accept it and plan for it. There could be a lot of reasons for them to agree, Rae.” I started drafting a response in Word agreeing to meet with them and setting the date and time since they chose the location. I gestured to the screen and moved aside. “Take a look and see if I should change anything? Please?”

I finished my shake and thought about what he said. It did make sense. Now that Alec was married and happy, maybe the threat of having all of that taken away pushed him to want to end the threat once and for all. I sighed and leaned forward, leaning over to read the email. “Shouldn’t it be a little later at night, you know for Alec?”

I scanned the draft of the email once more. “I don’t think it’s Alec I’ll be meeting. But don’t forget that Alec is no longer tied to being nocturnal. Although I suppose by now some of the effects from his injection could be wearing off.” Honestly I had no idea if the effects did wear off. Another reason I wanted to contact him. To see how he was adapting to everything.

I thought about what he said and nodded, “Alright, if you’re happy with it. Send it. While we wait to see if they agree to it, we can form some type of plan. I don’t like this, but I don’t want you to go alone. I think you should take someone with you. I can stay here and monitor everything on this end, but I would really feel better if you weren’t alone. You know, just in case something goes wrong.” I waited for him to think over what I said. I couldn’t stop him from going, that was true, but I wouldn’t budge on this point. He was going to take someone with him. That was final.

She had agreed almost too easily. Then she gave me an ultimatum? “Take someone with me?” I was too surprised by her suggestion to say anything. I bit back my initial response and focused on sending my response to their email. Then I turned to Rae. “I appreciate your concerns, Rae. But I don’t think it’s a good idea. For one thing, we don’t have anyone I would trust. For another, a second person might spook Draven and Alec and put them on the defensive.”

I shook my head, “You’re not going alone. If that means that I have to find someone to monitor the screens to see if They are onto what we are doing and go with you myself, I will. You are not going alone. I’m not going to budge on this. So you can either do this the hard way or the easy way. Either way, you will not go alone.” He started to say something and I held my hand up, “Nope, I don’t want to hear it. Bottom line. Even if you fight me, I will not budge on this.” I got up and threw my empty cup away, then turned around and faced him, my arms across my chest waiting.

All I will say is that I’ll consider it. Now, since the email has been sent, I’m going to go home and try to get some sleep. Kabul’s former ‘Green Zone’ abandoned as diplomats flee Afghan Capital

Kabul’s former diplomatic quarter fell silent on August 16 as foreign missions were moved to the airport, leaving Taliban patrols in control of the fortified zone of concrete blast walls and checkpoints known as the Green Zone.

With police and security contractors who once guarded the embassies in the Wazir Akbar Khan district now gone, some motorists were forced to get out of their cars and lift security barriers themselves before driving through.

The victorious insurgents have promised not to carry out retribution against former government workers and a Taliban leader said his fighters had been “ordered to allow Afghans to resume daily activities and do nothing to scare civilians.”

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi on August 16 called for national reconciliation in neighbouring Afghanistan.

The official IRNA news agency quoted Raisi saying that Iran will support efforts to restore stability in Afghanistan as a first priority.

He called Iran “a brother and neighbouring nation” to Afghanistan. He also described the Americans’ rapid pullout as a “military failure” that should “turn to an opportunity for restoring life, security and stable peace.”

The Dutch military plans to operate multiple flights to Afghanistan, the country’s Defense Minister Ank Bijleveld said in a statement on August 16. She added that one aircraft was already underway to Kabul. “In part due to the uncertain situation multiple flights are planned,” she said.

Portugal prepared to take in 243 Afghans, their families: Defence Minister

Portugal’s Defence Minister Joao Gomes Cravinho said that his country is prepared to take in 243 Afghans, and their families who worked with Portuguese forces stationed in the country.

Defence Minister said NATO is coordinating the evacuation of the Afghans because Portugal doesn’t have the military capacity to do so. He told public broadcaster RTP late on August 15 that he is not aware of any Portuguese citizens living in Afghanistan.

Portugal had a small detachment of fewer than 200 troops stationed at Kabul airport, as part of the NATO mission in the country. The last ones pulled out at the end of May.

A Taliban official said that the Taliban fighters in Kabul have started collecting weapons from civilians. “We understand people kept weapons for personal safety. They can now feel safe. We are not here to harm innocent civilians,” the official told Reuters.

City resident Salad Moleskin, director of the MOBY group media company, said on Twitter that Taliban soldiers had come to his company compound to enquire about the weapons kept by his security team.

Pakistan PM to chair meeting on the situation in Afghanistan

A meeting of Pakistan’s security committee chaired by Prime Minister Imran Khan will be held on August 16 to discuss the evolving situation in neighbouring Afghanistan, a day after the Taliban seizing power in Kabul and President Ashraf Ghani fled the country.

Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi said in a statement that Pakistan will present its stance on the current situation following consultations in the National Security Committee meeting. Senior political and military leaders, including Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa and Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi, will attend the meeting.

Another important meeting will be held with a visiting Afghan delegation at the Foreign Office. Separately, Qureshi will also hold a meeting with Prime Minister Khan and discuss the regional situation.

China on August 16 said that it is willing to develop “friendly relations” with the Taliban after the insurgents seized control of Afghanistan. Twitter account hacked, says official after Afghan embassy tweets slamming Prez Ghani

An official of the Afghan embassy on August 16 suggested that its Twitter handle was hacked after several tweets criticising embattled Afghan President Ashraf Ghani for fleeing the country were posted from it.

Abdulhaq Azad, the Press Secretary of the Afghan embassy in India, tweeted that he has lost control of the mission’s official Twitter handle, along with a screen shot of one of the messages slamming Ghani for leaving Afghanistan.

“I have lost access to Twitter handle of @AfghanistanInIN, a friend sent screen shot of this tweet, [this tweet is hidden from me.] I have tried to log in but can’t access. Seems it is hacked,” Azad tweeted from his own Twitter handle.

The tweets criticising Ghani were deleted later.

Russia said its ambassador to Afghanistan will meet with the Taliban in Kabul on August 17 and that it will decide on whether to recognise the new government based on its conduct. Air India cancelled its Delhi-Kabul-Delhi flight that was scheduled to operate on August 16 to avoid Afghanistan airspace, senior officials said. It was the only commercial flight scheduled to operate between India and Afghanistan on August 16, and Air India is the only carrier that has been operating flights between the two countries.

Moreover, the carrier diverted its two flights coming to Delhi from the US toward Sharjah in the UAE for the same reason.

Afghan research scholars, home due to pandemic, stare at uncertainty as Taliban takes over

With the Taliban capturing Kabul, Afghan students’ hopes of returning to India to complete their courses seems bleak.

“Our life is very uncertain and we are not sure how safe we are after Taliban have taken over the capital,” said Mohammed Kazem, a student at the Central University of Kerala (CUK), in a phone conversation with The Hindu from Kabul. Owing to the COVID-19 situation, his return had not been possible so far. “But now, the change in regime in Afghanistan, overtaken by the Taliban has made things uncertain,” he added. Mr. Kazem said the Indian embassy in Kabul had closed down three days ago and that there was no means of communication with them.

“We are scared, terrified and feeling hopeless, finding it difficult to even grieve,” said 33-year-old Ali Maisam, another research student in the linguistics department at CUK. He added that the areas captured by the Taliban were worse off and sought the international community’s help in ensuring peace.

Many students from the Hazra ethnic group and other minority communities studying abroad refused to speak, expressing fear of persecution if their identity was revealed.

Punjab CM urges MEA to arrange evacuation of Indians stuck in gurdwara in Afghanistan

Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Monday urged the Centre to arrange evacuation of all Indians, including 200 Sikhs who were stuck in a gurdwara in Afghanistan, and said his government was willing to extend any help needed for the same.

Australia works to get citizens, humanitarian cases out of Afghanistan

Australia is working to get more than 130 of its citizens and people who have been granted humanitarian visas out of Afghanistan after the Islamist Taliban seized control of the country, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on August 16.

He called for the Taliban to cease all violence against civilians, treat Afghan government officials and elected leaders with dignity and allow people to leave the country “without threat or hindrance”.

Australia’s defence department said it would be sending more than 250 personnel to support efforts to evacuate Australians and visa holders from Afghanistan.

At least five killed at Kabul airport: Witnesses

According to witnesses, at least five people were killed in Kabul airport as hundreds of people tried to forcibly enter planes leaving the Afghan capital.

One witness said that he had seen the bodies of five people being taken to a vehicle. Another witness said that it was not clear whether the victims were killed by gunshots or in a stampede.

U.S. troops, who are in charge of the airport, earlier fired in the air to scatter the crowd, a U.S. official said.

France to begin Afghanistan evacuations

France said that it will evacuate its first nationals and Afghan colleagues from the fallen Afghan capital Kabul to a base in the United Arab Emirates on August 16. Defence Minister Florence Parly said that they are planning to carry out first rotation on Monday. She added that they have organised a base at the United Arab Emirates to receive the first evacuees.

She said that their priority is to evacuate (Afghan) personnel who rendered service to France. The military operation dubbed ‘Apagan’ involves two French air force transport planes, a C-130 and A400M, which left France on August 15.

Vistara’s Delhi-London flights stop using Afghanistan airspace

Vistara’s flights from Delhi to London have stopped using the Afghanistan airspace. The Afghanistan airspace was declared “uncontrolled” by the Kabul airport on August 16 and transit flights have been asked to avoid it.

Vistara spokesperson said, “We have stopped using Afghanistan airspace and are taking an alternate route for our flights to and from London Heathrow.” “We are closely working with the relevant authorities to monitor and assess the situation and taking necessary steps to ensure the safety of our passengers, staff and aircraft,” the spokesperson added.

Vistara is not going to reduce the number of its Delhi-London flights. The full-service carrier currently operates four weekly flights on Delhi-London-Delhi route.

The first Czech evacuation flight has taken off from Kabul’s international airport and landed in Prague on August 16.

Temporarily closed embassy in Kabul: South Korea Foreign Ministry

South Korea’s Foreign Ministry said it has “temporarily closed” its embassy in Kabul and evacuated most of its staff to an unspecified third country in the Middle East.

The ministry said a few diplomats, including Ambassador Choi Taeho, remain at a safe location in Afghanistan to support the evacuation of a South Korean national in the country and that the Seoul government is closely working with the United States and other countries to ensure their safe evacuation.

Afghanistan has been on South Korea’s travel ban list since 2007. There were reportedly around five South Koreans living in Afghanistan before the Seoul government in June called for all of them to leave the country within 10 days as the United States and NATO proceeded with troop pullouts.

New Zealand plans to evacuate some Afghan nationals, PM Ardern says

New Zealand will deploy personnel and a military plane to help evacuate its citizens and some Afghan nationals who worked with New Zealand agencies, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said on Monday.

About 37 Afghan nationals have been identified to have worked alongside the New Zealand Defence Forces, Ardern said at a news conference in Wellington.

The prime minister said the government did not expect the situation in Afghanistan to deteriorate so fast.

Airlines reroute flights to avoid Afghanistan airspace

Major airlines are rerouting flights to avoid Afghanistan airspace after insurgents took control of the presidential palace in Kabul as U.S.-led forces departed and Western nations scrambled on Monday to evacuate their citizens.

United Airlines, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic said they were not using the country’s airspace.

A United spokeswoman said the change affects several of the airline’s U.S.-to-India flights.

Flight-tracking website FlightRadar24 showed few commercial flights over Afghanistan at 0300 GMT on Monday but many planes overflying neighbouring Pakistan and Iran.
