The Ohio State Reformatory, Mansfield, OH. Cell Blocks and (a little about) The Movie
Today, several tour options are available. Self-guided tours allow for views of portions, "Behind the Bars" takes visitors to yet other places (needing more supervision from docents) and at least one is focused on the rooms used during filming of The Shawshank Redemption.
The admonition pictured above is announced because the locks on the cell doors may very well still work. The guide I followed explained that if a visitor does close a door behind them and it locks a locksmith will need to be called in to get them out. The locksmith will arrive from Columbus (also about 60 miles away) in their own sweet time, and after "springing" the visitor, hand that visitor a bill to the tune of $1,500.00. Tours are also conveyed with two docents: one at the front, leading the way, and one at the rear, making sure no one is left behind as gates are locked, which has happened.
Tumblr media
The chapel (above) and one of the hospital wards (following)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another admonition was to not eat the paint. Someone, an adult no less, once pulled a piece of paint off the wall, announced "Potato chip!" and stuck it in his mouth -- to the horror of the assembled guests.
Tumblr media
The Attic: once home to over 200 "hardened felons" following a fire at the main Ohio Penitentiary in 1930 that necessitated their re-location. Guests were invited to search the walls for the scribblings left behind.
Tumblr media
Part of the basement.
There is no official record of anything untoward happening in the basement, but anecdote points to darker events. Stories told by ex-inmates are of prisoners being tied up in what today would be called "stress positions" for hours on end, and of "the Hole." The Hole was, it seems, about six feet square and fourteen feet deep, and was used to discipline any inmate said to have crossed the staff. Once dropped in, an inmate (or even two!) would be left for days, with only a tin cup of water and a small plate of gruel to eat. The state says such a hole is not noted on any plans, and nothing to indicate such ever existed (and certainly no record of anything that might be termed "torture"). What remains in the basement, coupled with the words of those who were in the prison, leads many to believe the stories.
No, there is no hole remaining, only a curiously different slab of concrete in the floor, along with obvious signs in the architecture that something existed once upon a time.
Tumblr media
Views of the tiers in (if I remember correctly) the East Block.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The current residents include swallows, for whom the reformatory must provide plenty of nesting places.
Tumblr media
Looking down a tier in the West Block.
Tumblr media
A typical West Block cell, more-or-less as it was -- in the 80s I suppose.
While many of the extant reformatory rooms were used while filming Shawshank, the all-important cell block scenes were filmed elsewhere in Mansfield. Though the cell blocks in the reformatory provided the inspiration for the look and feel -- and reportedly the emotional feeling of the place -- the extant cells themselves were simply too small to allow for actors and crew to shoot within. Instead, the cell block in the movie was built to spec in an abandoned factory, and filled with extras, many of whom were local.
Tumblr media
Film still of the cell block (Warner Bros.; web).
Capitalizing on the film's growing success, among other things a visitor can see are:
Tumblr media
the tunnel Tim Robbins' Andy Dufresne dug through the prison wall (above) and the "pipe" Dufresne crawled through on his way out (below)
Tumblr media
"... 500 yards of shit-smelling foulness I can't even imagine..." (Warner Bros.; web)
both of which were built to allow for the camera pulls needed in the action, and neither of which were actually attached to anything; the wall beyond the hole in Dufresne's cell is only a wall -- there is no real cell surrounding it! The sewer pipe Robbins crawled in was built as a free-standing unit, and the water doctored with chocolate syrup and oatmeal for, um, texture.
I had (as others have) wondered about that service way beyond Dufresne's cell, but at Mansfield, that such an access in the architecture existed can be seen between the cells:
Tumblr media
gated at either end, but allowing for work on the "wet" works to the lavatories and toilets.
Of course, other scenes can be remembered. The room where Morgan Freeman's "Red" is interviewed at parole hearings appears much as it was in the movie:
Tumblr media
including some props for the parole board, and the room dressed to appear as the half-way house where Brooks and Red were sent after release -- complete with Brooks cutout by the window (following):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and of course I did the "selfie thing:"
Tumblr media
The reformatory society has, in addition to the tours of the building, identified many of the other locations around Mansfield and beyond that were used during filming, allowing fans to glean just a little more of the history (and take selfies I'm sure). The only exception is the location of the final scene: Zihuatanejo, Mexico, is actually in a wildlife refuge on St. Croix island in the Caribbean. On their web page, the directions indicate "hop on a plane!"
Visitation to the reformatory, in the largest part due to the fandom for Shawshank, has grown from a few thousands in the first years to over a hundred thousand a year.
Tumblr media
An antique store now, this building was dressed as a pawn shop for the movie (Google Streetview).
Photos: R. Jake Wood, 2024, unless otherwise noted.

ok yall in the past one (1) month i have:
moved an hour away to a new apartment with my boyfriend
had to stay on at my old job for a month, meaning an hour commute there and back (during which i locked myself out of my car one night while i was getting gas and had to pay a locksmith $150, yes i'm still salty)
took pto to make the wedding cake for my friends' wedding plus three other cakes for the guests (spoiler: they forgot to eat it, maybe like half of one of the cakes was actually consumed. i am also slightly salty about this as well)
got a sinus infection (which is current, rip)
celebrated my birthday (technically still today with about 30 minutes left, uneventful due to aforementioned sinus infection)
and in a week i'm doing a roadtrip with my parents to go visit my sister in texas (yes we are driving from columbus, ohio. yes that is 20 hours. no my mom refuses to fly despite multiple pleas and offers to get her high out of her mind. yes my father is the type of man to say we can only stop once every 8 hours to pee. i am questionable about the whole thing)
so suffice to say i haven't written anything in a month and i frankly have absolutely zero spoons leftover to give any mind into writing at the moment. which i know is shitty because i left off on a horrible cliffhanger, please accept my most sincere apologies.

Top Questions to Ask Locksmith Columbus OH Before Hiring Them
If you are facing a car lockout situation or need to upgrade your car’s security, you might want to hire locksmith Columbus OH for your requirements. To hire the right person, you should ask the best fit questions. Here we will take a look at the top questions to ask before you proceed with hiring. 1. Will they offer emergency services when needed? You could be in a car lockout situation and need a person to offer respite immediately. Your key is low on battery and you are in the outskirts of the town. These are just two examples of how an emergency situation looks like. You may go through numerous other situations where you need some to come immediately. Is the locksmith you have found ready to extend their services at any given time? Are they really a call away and will respond to your needs immediately? If yes, you should opt for the locksmith service 2. Do they have the requisite license to provide locksmith services? In certain states, the locksmith undergoes a car key making Columbus training. They gain certification to program the key or open the lock for specific brands or car make. They are licensed and authorized to perform the car rekeying. It is a good idea to find someone with that kind of service or offering for your car requirements. The licensed and insured locksmith would offer more capable and professional services than someone untrained. They would recognize the problem immediately and offer the required solution. 3. Does the company conduct background checks? Locksmith scams are on the rise, and there would be many people who aren’t locksmiths joining the club. As a professional company, it is important to determine if the locksmith is a fraud or not. that’s why you should look for locksmith companies that conduct a thorough background check of their employees. You should check if they are aware of their employee’s past records, certifications, place of stay, social service number and other details. If they aren’t sure or haven’t recorded it, you might want to change your locksmith Columbus OH for the work. 4. Can the locksmith open a locked car? In most cases you need a car locksmith service when you are in a car lockout situation. This means your car key is not working and the car is locked. You need a locksmith that can help unlock the car. They should have the requisite tools, understanding and knowledge that can help you open the car lock. 5. How to get a replacement key without the original? This is an important question that you should ask before hiring the locksmith services. The professional locksmith should be able to program any type of car key from a particular brand without needing the original. That will speak volumes about their expertise and ability. 6. How much does it cost to replace car keys? When you are hiring professional car key making Columbus services, you need to know how much it can cost. Ensure you get estimates on the car key making services before you finalize the professional.
