Umbral Stalker (Inquisitor Archetype)

 Inquisitors in general are no strangers to stealth, as it is often necessary to hunt the enemies of their faith. However, for some, the specialization goes so far that they are granted special powers by their faith to aid in those tactics, even if their deity does not normally endorse such tactics and magics.

Such umbral stalkers specialize in striking from the shadows, locating their enemies and delivering swift judgement before their foe ever knows they are being targeted.

Depending on the faith, they might be completely ordinary followers of doctrine, but for more up-front religions that believe in proclaiming the crimes of their enemies before taking them down might consider such inquisitors to be outright heretical, while faiths in between on the spectrum might look down upon them for their tactics.

Nevertheless, they get results when heretics and monsters are too wary or dangerous to tackle head on.

 Calling upon the power of shadow, these inquisitors gain the subdomain of night, regardless of if the darkness domain is in their deity’s repertoire. This grants them the ability to become invisible while in dim light or darker to all but those with darkvision, as well as the ability to pierce the gloom with their own sight.

Rather than be blessed with accuracy against foes in a more general manner, these inquisitors gain an even greater blessing when proclaiming a judgement against foes that cannot properly perceive them.

Agile and stealthy, these stalkers are well-trained in the arts of mobility and walking unseen.

Like other inquisitors, they can deal weakness-exploiting blows with a lucky shot, but their ability to do so is reliant on their ability to stay hidden from their foe. The blow they deliver, however, is even more grievous than an ordinary inquisitor.

On the one hand, this archetype offers a lot to a particularly stealthy build of inquisitor, but on the other hand, some of their abilities, while more powerful than their normal equivalent, are reliant entirely upon stealth to actually work. If that appeals to you, I recommend a stealth-heavy build that has a few backup tricks for when stealth fails, but also remember that vanish, invisibility, and especially greater invisibility are your friends for this archetype.

 Due to their stealthy nature, these inquisitors spend much more time alone than most. That isolation could make them more vulnerable to extremism or manipulation by outside sources, if you want to explore those themes. Additionally, coming up with why and how they justify their methods for certain religions can be an interesting exercise.
