the thing about socializing for eleven hours straight (4-5 times longer than i usually socialize) is that even if i get home hours before bedtime i'm too keyed up to get back in the me-time headspace. i'm residually socializing even though i'm by myself and should be able to unwind. but i was wound too far and now there's kinks in the cord or something. whatever. this metaphor is getting away from me but you get it. or you don't, that's also possible.

hi! i am trying to learn spanish on my own, specifically mexican spanish, and i am have trouble finding beginner level reading material. I was wondering if theres any like kids/beginner level books you'd recommend

I have the best resource. Unlike other countries, the Mexican government makes its own books that are sent to every public school in the country (yes, the government makes the books, it doesn't pay to publishing houses to make them, history books may or may not be full of lies). One of the good things is they're made specifically for the Mexican people, which means Mexican Spanish and Mexican culture.

In Mexico we have six grades of elementary school and each grade has an anthology book of stories. Tho I think some stories are translations and some are by Mexican authors. But the best part is these books are available online, since the 1960 generation of books until the 2014 generation. I'm going to send you the ones my siblings and I used when we were in school and the most recent ones available, but you can go around the site and find the ones you like better. You can find there the Spanish books that are used to learn grammar, that might be useful too.

Any Jiang Cheng fic recs?

Inevitably my Jiang Cheng fic recs are also Yunmeng Shuangjie fic recs because I do have my priorities, so I apologize if that’s not what you’re looking for. Here is a list of some of my recent (and old) jc centric favorites:

everything else is spring bound ; some good mistakes ; with absolute splendor ; punctuated on all sides by the absolutely incomparable writing goals of all goals @veliseraptor ; jc is having a time working through his feelings in some amount of 4K to 43K words. worrying about wwx! working with lwj because he’s worried! absolutely infuriated by all of this! wedding planning shenanigans! just a superb collection of jc goodness. mostly post-canon except for the last one. read them! if you’ve read them already, read them again!

promises made, promises broken and overcoming the distance by @doubletan ; post-canon night hunting gone wrong! wwx doing empathy on jc! jc and wwx slowly finding a way to bridge that distance between them! jc realizing his place in wwx’s life never went away! just all of my favorite tropes and jc growing and healing. the best.

plea from a cat named little plum blossom by rolameny ; jc has feelings and also he gets a cat. yes that’s my summary.

brave enough to breathe ; while i’m in this body (chengqing / nc-17) ; to do whatever must be done ; impossible with two hands, no more impossible than one by @souridealist ; extraordinarily written series set in a universe where yu ziyuan does chop off wwx’s hand. it saves exactly no one and jc still loses his core. i love this series so much! it hurts, it’s brutal, it’s perfect. first two are more jc pov but i linked all four because they should all be read.

no one lights a candle to remember by @asravine ; jc feeling feelings about wwx as he is very much wont to do and trying to deal with that.

black shroud by spiritlure ; another night hunt goes wrong because i do love this theme very much. also the prose is beautiful and it made my cry.

parley by cafecliche ; wedding shenanigans while jc works through his, you guessed it, feelings about wwx. not as kind or soft as some of these others but hey, they’re dumbasses and they’ll get there. there’s two more in this series if you’d like to read them but this is the jc pov one.

your slightest look easily will unclose me by RedWritingHood ; jiang cheng and hanahaki disease! basically jc throws up flower petals when he’s happy. cue wwx and jl. one of my absolute favorites. instant serotonin.

for both of us (and time is but a paper moon) by sami ; ongoing remix of the famous paper moon fic in which jc and lwj time travel this time and have a chance to avert catastrophe. it’s complete and currently updating every two days (should be fully posted in a few weeks). if you haven’t read the original and time is but a paper moon including all of the side fics, you should. excellent jc content in all of it. just a great ensemble cast. i adore this series and verse very much.

attempting the impossible by ariaste ; jc finds out he has a great number of nephews and nieces he has never met before and has some serious opinions about this. jc is a good uncle and good with babies.

but love is impossible & it goes on despite the impossible by @gaysarawat ; jc and his feelings in the midst of wedding planning shenanigans because i have a type and it’s this. jc learning he is not nearly as alone as he feels and it’s beautiful.

hope these all work. i imagine most of them have already been read because they’re popular fics and wonderfully written, but enjoy!

1. I don’t have any recommendations for what count to use. 18 is probably fine. If you want to steel yourself for use of 24, you’re a stronger person than us. 2. http://www.damaniel.info/dmc/dmctorgb.html Sure do. You have to translate the HEX to RGB, but this works pretty well. DMC has a lot of colors, but it doesn’t have EVERY color. You’re going to be disappointed by its purple choices. Thanks limitations of dye.

#im also imagining #if the mental time travel happens before or soon after the clones meet anakin #then anakin sensing their fear/weird feelings about him resulting in some self isolation #not in a 'all my loved ones actually have me' isolation #but a 'hmm my coworkers dont seem to like me very much. i think ill wont get close to them' isolation #which is a point for palpatine (yes! dont have meaningful relationships with the people you go to war with!)#and so then rex and other realizing this (and also for some at least do actually like him etc) #being like 'no! dont isolate! come hang with us!' but also weird feelings in the force sending mixed signals (via @lockedinabookstore)

Hello! i’m finally getting around to answering this! :) Thank you for the ask. I wrote a little something for this, but from Jin Ling’s perspective.

“宗主，子时都过了，该就寝了。”

Jin Ling looked up from the pile of missives scattered on his working desk.

“Huh?” His eyes burned. His neck ached, and there was tightness between his scapula that made him feel suffocated. 

“It’s almost midnight. Time to rest,” repeated the maid as she held out the cup to him with a bow. 

Water. He’d called for tea. Jin Ling frowned, irked. “What happened to my tea?” 

“But...it’s late.” 

“I know it’s late, that’s why I called for tea.”

“Jiang-zongzhu said -” 

Jin Ling set his brush down with a loud clatter, irritation turning to anger. “Jiang-zongzhu isn’t here! This is Jinlintai, not Lotus Pier. Am I the Sect Master of Lanling or is my jiujiu the sect master?!”     

Fairy, who had dozed off with her great big head resting on his thigh, jerked awake at his yell. He automatically laid a hand down between her ears to sooth her, and she whined a little, lying back down.

The maid shrunk, shoulders shrugging up to her ears as if her head could retract back into her chest like a turtle. “Apologies, Sect Master. I will see to your tea right away!”

Jin Ling picked up his brush, grumbling, “And some pastries...I’m hungry.” 

He dismissed her with a wave and returned his attention to the scrolls and parchment on his table. 

During his life, Jin Guangyao had run a tight ship. His accounts were pristine and his books were in order. Logistically, Jinlintai was a well-oiled machine, but politically, this place was a fucking cesspool. A mess.

His mess. 

All of Jinlintai belonged to Jin Rulan now. 

For a time, it seemed like a coup was imminent, but with Lan Wangji as Chief Cultivator, his jiujiu backing him with the full firepower of Yunmeng, and Wei Wuxian, the Grand-master of demonic cultivation, making it known his unwavering loyalty to the son of his dearly departed shijie, no one dared to rise against Jin Ling. 

After some months, the tension ebbed and the ripple in the pond that Jin Guangyao’s untimely death had caused eventually petered out. 

Oh but the pond was deep and the water was murky. 

Jin Ling groaned, lacing his fingers behind his neck and stretched. Perhaps the maid was right, perhaps it was time to sleep. 

Standing, he made his way to the window, and gazed up at the cloudy sky.

Fairy pattered up to him, sat down on her hind legs, and nudged his hand for pets. She was so needy sometimes; Jin Ling huffed, giving her exactly what she wanted. Fairy closed her eyes, tongue lolling out happily.

She reminded him of himself. Temperamental, snippy, and a bit of a princess.

On a night like this, he couldn’t help but think of his parents. Jin Ling touched the jade hanging on his belt, the only thing he had left of his mother, and hoped that she would be proud of him and the man he was slowly becoming each day...

He knew so little about his mother. Jiang Cheng would talk about her sometimes, but his jiujiu wasn’t much of a reminisce and lament kind of man. Jiang Yanli’s death was a wound, deeper perhaps than any wound Jiang Cheng had ever sustained. He used to tell Jin Ling when he was young that his mother had been the best woman who’d ever walked the earth, and Jin Ling had believed him. 

The servants at Jinlintai often said that Jiang Yanli had been a lovely person: kind, good, and sweet of temper. But she would have been strong too, Jin Ling thought, she must have been. His late mother had charged into a battle - into chaos - for a brother who the world had despised, whose creation had killed her husband, because even after everything, she had believed in A-Xian’s heart, in his soul...and had protected him with her life. 

And she had been right. 

It took sixteen years in the making, but Jiang Yanli had finally been proven right. 

If only...if only Jin Ling could remember what she looked like. He turned back to the table of work he’d abandoned and exhaled dejectedly. He wished that instead of the maid, it was his a-niang who brought him tea and midnight snacks and chided at him to go to bed. 

But his a-niang was long gone. The only one left was his jiujiu.

Speaking of his jiujiu, a letter from Lotus Pier informed him that Jiang Cheng was coming by tomorrow to visit him. Jin Ling was extremely relieved. He had so many questions, so many complaints he couldn’t wait to vent at Jiang Cheng. 

Like how he would like to go on night hunts with his friends and just be seventeen for a night for crying out loud. Like how it was almost his birthday and he’d like a day off, is that so much to ask?

Jin Ling sighed. 

His thoughts drifted and he wondered where his friends were tonight. Sizhui would still be travelling with Wen Ning, no doubt. Ouyang Zizhen and Lan Jingyi were probably wrapping up their hunt. Jin Ling had to decline their invite. There was too much to do, and he was already overwhelmed.

But he had so wanted to go...it seemed like such fun...

He could already hear Jiang Cheng now, going on and on about how he can’t just drop everything and wander off like he used to anymore, how he was sect master now and needed to be more poised, less flustered, and blah blah blah blah blah. 

God, was this how it was like for jiujiu when he first became sect master? Which blasted elder nagged jiujiu into the grumpy-face he is now? 

...

Jin Ling realized with a start that there had been no one to nag his jiujiu when he had become sect leader. All those years ago, his jiujiu had been thrust upon this position by the worst tragedy to have ever befallen his home. One after another, he had lost his mother, his father, his brother, his sister, and was left with no one but a baby nephew to take care of. 

How old was he then? Not that much older than Jin Ling himself, surely. Who did jiujiu turn to when he was frustrated and lost, when he was scared and lonely, when he felt small and the world too big, when the solutions to his problems seemed worse than the problems themselves? 

Jin Ling used to think that his xiao-shushu was the more doting of his uncles, and maybe Jin Guangyao did care for him in his twisted ways, but Jiang Cheng...Jiang Cheng had given him everything. 

Jin Ling had no father, no mother, and Jiang Cheng had tried to be both. Jin Rulan belonged to the Jins, belonged to Lanling. Jiang Cheng didn’t have to do any of that, but he did without complaint and without expectation of any returns. For the first time, Jin Ling was starting to understand just how much Jiang Cheng loved him. 

At this thought, the back of his throat grew tight and his nose stung. 

“Fairy,” Jin Ling scratched his best girl behind one ear. “It’s late. What say you we turn in for the night?” 

Fairy nudged him with her muzzle. She agreed. Smart dog. 

Sect Leader Jin sent a quick word to the servants to call off the tea and biscuits and asked for a bath instead. 

He was exhausted.

yeah, i don't think i could put them in any kind of meaningful ranking either, and i'm counting shows not necessarily that i would re-watch now (bc lately i am just not really watching much of anything) but ones that were/are hugely influential for me and that i *have* re-watched many times in the past

8 shows books to get to know me

all systems red by martha wells. explorations of autonomy, personhood, responsibility, exploitation, guilt, self-image, community, alienation, vulnerability, and trust, all wrapped up in a loving package of snark. this is the only book i've ever read (well, this and the others in the series) that i would and do recommend to everyone i know.

graceling by kristin cashore. sometimes a book shakes hands with your soul; this book went ahead and kissed me full on the mouth while it was at it. then we had a love affair during which no one got pregnant because neither of us want children and reproductive freedom is very important to us both. this book gave me hope when i had very little, and it also helped me better understand someone very important to me. it made me feel seen, and a little less broken.

hyperbole and a half by allie brosh. one of the best descriptions of depression i have ever encountered. also makes me laugh so hard i cry, every single time.

feminist theory: from margin to center by bell hooks. this book made me want to learn to think, not just about feminism but about theory of any kind. it opened the world to me in a way i will always be grateful for.

everyone's a aliebn when ur a aliebn too by jomny sun. i don't need to write any books about my life philosophy because this book already exists.

19 ways of looking at wang wei by eliot weinberger. very slim little volume exploring meaning and how it is communicated via 19 translations of a single tang dynasty poem. hello!!

we are never meeting in real life by sam irby. sam irby is a master of making the poignant hilarious. she cracks my heart like an egg. i would sell my soul to the devil to be half as funny as she is.

roget's thesaurus by...uh...roget? (i guess technically the version i have is bartlett's roget's thesaurus, but tbh i don't really care that much about what bartlett is bringing to the table. sorry bartlett.) this is perhaps my most beloved reference book. it's not just about the words, it's about the relations between them and the way in which these relationships have been represented outside of the brain. also, it's a lifesaver for the tip of the tongue phenomenon, aka my one true archnemesis. alternative: wheelock's latin. first language textbook i ever had. i saw those declension tables and that was it for me, i was hooked forever.
