Hey there! Let’s talk Locs!
Ayyyeeee!!! Peace Kings and Queens! Welcome to my first official blog/tumblr post. Essentially, I will be covering any and everything about life. From locs, to relationships, work etc. You name it, more than likely imma cover it.
But for this first post, I will discuss/cover the Miss Locs Pageant. The Miss Locs Pageant celebrates and honors (yep you guessed it) LOCS!!! So, think of a pageant with all of the lovely and beautiful contestants rocking their locs! Yaaassss!
Tumblr media
The Miss Locs Pageant has been three years in the running and is hosted annually. This year the pageant will on November 9th from 4pm-7pm at the Poynor Auditorium in Florence, SC.
Want more information on the pageant? Email [email protected]. Also, please be sure to follow the official pageant page on Instagram @misslocspageant and on Facebook at Miss Locs Pageant Organization.
As we patiently wait for pageant day, I will introduce some of the lovely contestants. I had a chance to ask a few of the contestants some questions, and I am excited to share their responses with you. Today, we will get to know a little about Maranda Churn 2019 Miss Locs Pageant contestant. Enjoy!
Tumblr media
1. Tell me about yourself. Give a cool fact about yourself no one could guess upon first meeting you.
My name is Maranda Churn, and I am 29 years old. My favorite color is green. I am a Taurus (Sung), Leo (Moon), and Cancer (Rising). I am currently working 3 jobs and I am a mother of 2 beautiful queens, Journey & Wisdom. A cool fact about myself is I’ve been celibate for 2 years. With sex being literally everywhere, and women (especially black women) being exploited everywhere from social media to reality tv, my celibacy has become something very sacred to me. Through a number of interesting experiences and hardships (to include being sexually assaulted many years ago), through these 2 years I have evolved on a number of levels and it has been a difficult yet beautiful journey. I’ve learnt that saving myself has essentially SAVED me, and one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life.
2. Tell me about your loc journey from how you started and even why. Also, how long have you had them?
My locs journey is beautiful, from the ugly stage to now having mature locs. One of the things I love about my locs is the transitional experience of my locs. Who I was when I first did the big chop in 2009, is not who I am today. I started my locs when I was 19 years old, I was fresh out of high school and out of my parents house. At that point, I honestly needed an easy low maintenance hairstyle, that wouldn’t cost me $65-$80 biweekly. I was at the beginning of a transition as well, and changing my hair was one of the first times. I just woke up one day and decided to CHOP all my hair off.
3. What do your locs say about you?
Regardless of any hardship, We will GROW through it!
4. If you were not committed to the loc journey, what hairstyle do you think would have?
Honestly, I don’t see myself without locs, but if I wasn’t committed to my locs journey…I think I would try the big chop low Amber Rose cut. I was essentially going to say perm, but after educating myself on how toxic those chemicals are….I can’t ever get a perm again.
5. What do you have to say those who have a negative view towards locs?
There is nothing negative about locs. You cannot attach an individual’s actions to a hairstyle. My locs do not define me, I define them. They are beautiful element of me, and they are a reflection of my grow inward and outward. locs represent beauty, commitment, and strength. And no, not everyone with locs smokes weed.
