Police kill Latinos at a higher rate than whites. Latinos are the second largest group killed by police after blacks. Numbers could be higher if all deaths were counted, and if Hispanic were classified as a race. It is possible that several Latino deaths were added to white and black categories.
Few police shootings of Latinos make national headlines. There were four reported cases of Latinos who were killed by police during the same week as Alton Sterling and Philando Castile. The lack of national attention and outrage stems from the poor understanding of the history of state violence against them in the United States.
Police shootings of Latinos have generated outrage in Latino communities for decades, but this history tends to be ignored. For example, the Latino community in Denver has organized against police brutality since the 1960s, but the sparse coverage of Latino deaths lack this historical context.
People always forget the extensive history of Latinos in the United States and our struggle for civil rights, the national focus on Latino issues is too limited. The public debate on police brutality, portrayed by the media as focusing solely on black and white, silences the voices of Latinos.
Latinos have formed organizations to address police brutality and other issues that affect our communities since the 1940s. These include the Brown Berets, Community Alert Patrol, Crusaders for Justice, Young Lords Party and Chicano Revolutionary Party.
While blacks and Hispanics have interactions with police at rates proportional to their population, according to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, both groups are over-represented when it comes to traffic searches and arrests. Hispanics, for example, make up 17.6 percent of the U.S. population but represent 23 percent of all searches and nearly 30 percent of arrests.
"The movement for black lives is doing something important, elevating all minority lives. And that's a critical part of the solution, but if our response is narrow and limited, the national response will be narrow and limited as well. And that's problematic as we move toward a country that is increasingly diverse." - Eric Rodriquez
We simply must do better. The lives of POC matter.
Here are four reported cases of Latinos who were killed by police during the same week as Alton Sterling and Philando Castile.
Pedro Villanueva
On July 3, two undercover California Highway Patrol officers, dressed in plain clothes, chased an unarmed, 19-year-old man named Pedro Villanueva. Their unmarked car pursued his pickup truck for 5 miles to a dead-end street. As Villanueva made a U-turn back toward their direction, the officers opened fire. According to the Los Angeles Times, Villanueva was shot several times and died at the scene. A passenger was shot in the arm but survived.
Melissa Ventura
On July 5, Melissa Ventura, a mother of three, was shot by two sheriff's deputies responding to a domestic disturbance at her home in Yuma, Arizona. The Arizona Republic reports the woman opened the door holding a knife as authorities arrived. She was then shot by both deputies and died en route to the hospital.
Anthony Nuñez
The 18-year-old was reportedly suicidal and had already attempted to shoot himself when he turned the gun on San Jose, California, police officers who had arrived to talk him down. He was then shot and killed by the officers. Police Chief Eddie Garcia told the local KGO-TV that officers attempted to intervene before shooting him. But family members question why other tactics, such as the use of a Taser, weren't used, and why they weren't allowed to see him prior to officers shooting him.
Raul Saavedra-Vargas
Police in Reno, Nevada, say they tried to pull over California native Raul Saavedra-Vargas as he drove the wrong way down a one-way street, refusing to stop. Instead, the 24-year-old drove toward a street closed to traffic due to a local festival full of pedestrians nearby. After Saavedra-Vargas' minivan drove through a metal barricade, police fired multiple rounds into both sides of the van. Witnesses told local KOLO that Saavedra-Vargas slowed down as he approached the barricade and didn't appear to want to floor the vehicle into the crowd.

35 New Spots to Eat & Drink Downtown
You’ve come a long way, Buffalo.
In just a few years over two dozen new restaurants, breweries and distilleries have nestled their way into the Downtown Buffalo food scene, from the Buffalo River to Tupper Street. Here is a rundown of all the new spots downtown to explore while you discover our resurgent city:
Angelica Tea Room, 517 Washington St.: Fine drinks and light finger fare are always in style at this swanky European-inspired cocktail bar.
Ballyhoo Links and Drinks, 211 South Park Ave.: Only a 7-minute walk from the arena, Ballyhoo offers housemade sausages, craft cocktails and a killer chocolate chip cookie ice cream sandwich.
Big Ditch Brewing Co., 55 E. Huron St.: Raise a glass to this popular downtown brewery and its two-story taproom; Big Ditch also offers a full pub menu and was awarded best brewery in the state at the 2016 TapNY festival.
Big Ditch Brewing Company
Casa Di Pizza, 11 E. Mohawk St.: One of Buffalo’s most popular pizzerias recently moved downtown since the last tournament; grab a quick slice of “Buffalo-style” pie or sit down for a meal.
Casa Azul, 128 Genesee St.: Acapulco, Mexico native Victor Parra Gonzalez offers a fresh take on tacos, tortas and poblanos at this cozy cantina.
D’Avoilio Kitchen, 535 Main St.: Try a pizza or sandwich that utilizes D’Avoilio’s 50 hand-crafted extra virgin olive oils and locally sourced ingredients.
Deep South Taco, 291 Ellicott St.: This taqueria along Buffalo’s new restaurant row, Ellicott Street, was an instant hit upon opening in late 2015.
Expo, 617 Main St.: This new food hall inside Buffalo’s historic Market Arcade complex features gourmet hot dogs, black rice sushi, made-to-order pasta and much more.
Deep South Taco
(716) Food & Sport, 7 Scott St.: The epicenter of Buffalo fandemonium, featuring over 70 televisions, including a 38-foot tall big screen showcasing the big games, three bars spread out over two floors and a host of menu options.
Frankie Primo’s +39, 51 West Chippewa St.: West Chippewa Street, long the hub of downtown’s nightlife scene, gained its own Italian restaurant in 2015; its fresh quality ingredients and “modern rustic” atmosphere will take you back to Italy.
The Garden Grille, 10 Lafayette Square. This restaurant inside Buffalo’s Hilton Garden Inn is a great spot in the heart of downtown to grab a quick sandwich.

Black Lives Matter
If I were in the US this month, I’d know from my school days that it’s Black History Month (and Breast Cancer Awareness Month and maybe some other designation too) but probably avoid the brief, shallow, and uninformed news blurbs about Frederick Douglass, Martin Luther King Jr., and others of their ilk, not because it’s not important but because it’s insincere.
This week I read up on Black Lives Matter in an attempt to use the occasion for its intended purpose: awareness and celebration of black people in American history. BLM is writing history during our lifetime: it’s evolved from protest to movement and still going strong. Having witnessed this evolution as an outsider, I’ve been keen to better understand it but resistant to doing so in a public forum because, as a white person of privilege, I’m hesitant to talk about race and likely to put my foot in my mouth. I hope any readers will understand I’m earnest, even if this post – hopefully more about an organization than about race – is too brief, too shallow, too uninformed.
#BlackLivesMatter was created in 2014 in response to the acquittal of George Zimmerman for killing 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. It’s “a hashtag, a slogan, a social movement” as well as an organization – and that organization is structured as a loose conglomeration of local chapters. I read on a few websites that this loose structure, not unlike Occupy Wall Street, has created some confusion and raised challenges with respect to the group’s message and accountability, but I like that despite having known founders, the group doesn’t have an obvious figurehead. I myself have always been weary of following individuals – it seems risky when people are so flawed.
According to Wikipedia, BLM’s three co-founders – Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors, and Opal Tometi – met through a national organization that trains community organizers and were moved by what they saw as “the devaluation of black lives after Zimmerman's acquittal.” Although they began in response to what represented to them a disregard for black lives by the state and media,
When we say Black Lives Matter, we are broadening the conversation around state violence to include all of the ways in which Black people are intentionally left powerless at the hands of the state. We are talking about the ways in which Black lives are deprived of our basic human rights and dignity.
By not focusing exclusively on violence against black people, Black Lives Matter brings attention to poverty, prison sentences, gender and sex discrimination, and other marginalization of black people in the US and around the world. BLM’s Guiding Principles reflect this inclusion of “all black lives” and reject the hetero-patriarchy of other black movements, past and present.
Despite its inclusive focus, BLM has inarguably gotten the most attention for its organization of responses to violence against black men: They have organized protests in Ferguson, Missouri and around the country when black people were killed in police custody, such as Freddie Gray, Michael Brown, Alton Sterling, and many others. This summer I was surprised to see protests in my parents’ hometown of Charlotte, North Carolina after Keith Lamont Scott was shot and killed by police. It shows that racial tension is everywhere, and my ignorance of it is just further evidence of my privilege.
This year Black Lives Matter was rated as Fast Company’s third-most innovative not-for-profit “for transitioning from a protest to a political force.” It successfully energized communities of all colors for activism around police brutality and the 2016 political candidates responded to the issues and questions raised by BLM and its members. With a new administration that is more antagonistic than collaborative or even sympathetic, Black Lives Matter remains mobilized. Already, BLM has supported targets of Trump’s policies, including Native Americans at Standing Rock. I’m interested to see what strategies they employ moving forward.

30 New Restaurants, Breweries and Distilleries Downtown
You’ve come a long way, Buffalo.
Every few years since 2000, thousands of visiting college hoops fans have descended on downtown Buffalo for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. The last time the tournament came here in 2014, large tracts of land near our downtown basketball arena were fenced off and either under construction or waiting to be redeveloped.
How times have changed.
Immediately adjacent to KeyBank Center is HarborCenter, a $200 million complex with shops, restaurants and a 200-room Marriott hotel.
Next to that is One Canalside, a redeveloped office building featuring a Courtyard by Marriott hotel. And across from there is a considerably expanded Canalside waterfront district to walk around and explore.
The blocks immediately adjacent to KeyBank Center only scratch the surface of the incredible rejuvenation downtown Buffalo has experienced since 2014; over two dozen new restaurants, breweries and distilleries now call the area from the Buffalo River to Tupper Street home. Here is a rundown of all the new spots downtown to explore while you discover our resurgent city this week:
The Healthy Scratch, 75 Main St.: Smoothies, acai bowls and other healthy options just steps from KeyBank Center in the Shops at HarborCenter.
Hearth + Press, 665 Main St.: Wood-fired pizzas, pastries and more in the heart of Buffalo’s Theater District.
Jake’s Café, 250 Delaware Ave.: Smoothies, sandwiches and more located inside downtown’s new Westin hotel.
Jaz and Jack’s, 36 Broadway: Paninis, po boys, and other Southern-inspired creations abound at this cozy café that opened in 2016.
The Healthy Scratch
Lockhouse Distillery, 41 Columbia St.: Buffalo’s first distillery in decades relocated just a few blocks away from KeyBank Center in 2015.
The Mahony, 199 Scott St.: Chef Brian Mahony opened this restaurant serving contemporary American fare in the restored Fairmount Creamery in 2016.
Marco’s Italian Deli, 111 Genesee St.: One of Buffalo’s best sandwich shops has added a downtown location; try the “Forget About It” sandwich and thank us later.
Marble & Rye, 112 Genesee St.: This popular bistro quickly carved out a reputation for top-notch cocktails and one of Buffalo’s best hamburgers following its 2015 opening.
Natalie’s Mediterranean, 111 Genesee St.: Quick souvlaki, gyros and other Greek specialties to-go.
Niagara Distilling Co., 459 Ellicott St.: Home to 1812 vodka and gin, Niagara also has a fun, vintage tasting room worth stopping in while you wait for your reservation at Ellicott Street’s nearby restaurant.
Oshun
Oshun, 5 E. Huron St.: One of downtown’s go-to seafood restaurants, set in a posh, Art Deco dining room.
Panorama on Seven, 95 Main St.: A dining room with a view. Contemporary fare served adjacent to the seventh floor lobby of Marriott HarborCenter hotel.
Patina 250, 250 Delaware Ave.: Located in The Westin, one of Buffalo’s newest hotels, Patina 250 offers contemporary American cuisine in a posh setting.
Pizza Plant, 125 Main St.: Home of the pizza pod, this longtime Williamsville pizzeria opened a waterfront location in 2015.
Public Espresso, 391 Washington St.: The purveyors of what Alton Brown called the best pour-over he ever had added a café in the lobby of the Hotel at the Lafayette in 2015.
Raclettes, 537 Main St.: This casual French bistro opened at the corner of Main and Genesee Streets in 2015.
Toutant
Sear, 200 Delaware Ave.: Buffalo’s newest steakhouse is located on the ground floor of the Avant Building, which is also home to Embassy Suites.
The Ward at RiverWorks, 359 Ganson St.: The sprawling Riverworks entertainment complex, featuring a roller derby rink, concert venue and soon-to-be brewery along the Buffalo River also includes this waterside eatery featuring popular pub favorites.
Ted’s Hot Dogs, 124 West Chippewa St.: Home of char-grilled goodness since 1927, Ted’s opened its first downtown location a couple of years ago.
Tewksbury Lodge, 249 Ohio St.: This new spot at RiverFest Park overlooks all the new development along the Buffalo River.
Tim Hortons HarborCenter, 1 Scott St.: This particular Tim Hortons became a shrine for fans of the doughnut chain when it opened in 2015, featuring wall displays dedicated to Horton and the history of hockey in Buffalo.
Toutant, 437 Ellicott St.: Chef James Roberts introduced downtown Buffalo to some Louisiana hospitality with this Southern-inspired restaurant in 2015.
