After the plane ride, Matt took you to your hotel and you got your room key before practically running away from him, including making the elevator doors close before he had a chance to enter himself. You walked to your hotel room and fumbled with the hotel key before walking in and shutting the door behind you, collapsing on the bed and letting the tears fall. You weren't even letting out sobs, just letting tears roll down your cheeks as you stared at the white ceiling above. You didn't want to keep pushing him about the situation but you knew it happened. I mean sure you had your moments of imagination before but that..that was REAL.

You wiped the tears from your face as you curled up higher on the couch, closer to the pillows, just taking a minute. At first you thought about taking Matt's suggestion and doing some sight seeing, after all this was your first time to Denver. The flight itself only took about two hours so by the time you arrived at the hotel it was a little after 11, including the travel in between.

The temperature wasn't too different from LA to Denver, which helped since you weren't entirely sure what to pack for in the first place. You let out a deep breath before deciding to get up from the bed, and walking towards the door, as you grabbed your purse and phone, leaving the room.

The hotel was a block away from a place called the 16th Street Mall so you decided to take a walk through there. While walking through, you looked at the people around you, taking in the sights. Even though some of it was the same as home, it was different. A different vibe, different energy. Almost peaceful.

As you walked past the windows at the store, you noticed a dress in the window on a mannequin. It was a mid-thigh length dress in a nice red wine shade, with chain straps and a cowl neckline. You looked down at yourself, and looked back up to the mannequin. The dress you had chosen for the opening tonight was a simple black dress you picked up from Target a few years back and you just consistently wore it to multiple events since then. It was a short black dress with a black sheer cover over it that reached down to your knees.

You thought for a moment before making your way inside the store, being greeted by a few people working at the shop. You asked them for help in finding the dress in your size before trying it on in the dressing room. You looked in the mirror and ran your fingers along the velvet fabric of the dress. The dress fit you just like how it sat on the mannequin, and you noticed a small slit along the bottom where the fabric wrapped over itself.

After looking at yourself in the mirror for just a little bit longer, you decided to buy the dress and wear it tonight instead of the dress you originally bought, picking up some matching jewelry before checking out and leaving the store.

You spent the next few hours, grabbing a bite at a local restaurant and continuing to walk around the streets of downtown Denver, even riding one of those electric scooters that connect to your phone in the process.

Once you realized it was almost 6, you decided to head back to your hotel room before bumping into a familiar figure in the lobby, causing you to drop your bags on the floor. You nodded in response, looking up at him, "Yeah I'm fine. Just tired." You were lying to him, but I mean if Matt was going to act like the kiss never happened, you might as well have done the same. Especially if he hadn't told Trey about it. He smiled softly, "Well alright then. I'll see you later tonight?"

You gave him a nod before you both parted your ways and you headed back to your room. You decided to take a shower to start getting ready for the celebration, taking your time as you cleaned yourself, and fixed your hair and makeup as well.

You finished getting ready right before you heard a knock on your door and you opened it revealing Matt in a button down shirt, black slacks, and a blazer. The top few buttons on his shirt were left unbuttoned, revealing a few strands of chest hair poking out the top. You held your bag close to you as Matt stood in the doorway, eyes scanning you, before he looked up and made eye contact, "You look...really good."

Shrugging at his comment you walked past him, shutting the door behind you as you started walking down the hallway. Matt followed closely behind, he came up behind you, lightly touching your arm making you jerk your arm away as you two ended up in the elevator. You pressed the button for the lobby and leaned against the wall of the elevator, crossing your arms across your chest, while trying your best to keep your eyes off Matt.

The drive to Casa Bonita wasn't that long, despite the pretty heavy traffic on the way there. Once you arrived, you and Matt climbed out of the car and walked in together where he led you to a table that had a few chairs, pulling one out for you. You made eye contact with him, before moving to a different chair, sitting down while looking at the menu on the table.

His jaw clenched and he grabbed onto your arm before lifting you from your chair, dragging you to one of the offices, shutting the door and locking it behind him before turning and looking at you, "Okay what the fuck?"

You crossed your arms across your chest, raising an eyebrow as you looked at him from across the room. "What do you mean?"

He rolled his eyes while scoffing letting out a chuckle, "Don't fucking do that."

NEWCASTLE, Wyo. — Al Smith had a problem.

The federal government had given him permission to drill for oil on land just east of Newcastle, but time was running out on the go-ahead. It was either drill it or lose it.

Smith had no way of drilling into the ground near his house by U.S. Highway 16. He was an oilman with a drilling rig, but that rig was in use elsewhere.

So Smith took a pickax, a shovel and a few sticks of dynamite, and dug a well by hand into what was likely very hard soil on a cold February day in 1966.

At 21 feet, Smith hit oil. It wasn’t a gusher, but perhaps it could serve as a centerpiece for a tourist attraction near a bend in the highway.

That attraction, dubbed by Smith as the Accidental Oil Co., grew up around the hand-dug well.

Smith dug several more wells, including one with a walk-down ramp where visitors could stop in a viewing room and watch as oil seeped out of the rock. Back on the surface, tourists could hand-pump their own oil out of Smith’s first well.

Smith added old oil well equipment on the site and brought in a 10,000-gallon oil tank from Denver. He converted it into a gift shop, or “Gift Tank,” as it was known.

The wells never produced much oil, certainly not enough to live on. But that was never the point, said Smith’s daughter, Deb. The attraction was meant to be more than a tourist stop. An educational experience — that was her father’s dream.

“He always wanted to show people what was involved in the drilling and recovery of oil,” she said.

That dream died a year after Smith did in 2005 at 90 from complications of pneumonia. Now the site is both a legacy and an overgrown memorial. The retro-style billboards along the highway have grown shabby, trees gone wild flank the Gift Tank doors, and the tools Smith used to dig his well hang on the wall next to a tunnel down into the earth that no longer echoes with questions or explanations.

It’s an incomplete end for an attraction that struck it big and has now faded away. Governors of Wyoming and South Dakota were on hand for the attraction’s grand opening in 1970. In its heyday, several hundred visitors a day, some from all over the world, drove up the gravel driveway.

But tourists stopped visiting in the numbers they once did, said his daughter, who still lives at the site. The place is expensive to operate, she says, and the attraction didn’t get the support of tourist organizations and local boosters.

“It was a heartbreaking decision to make,” she said.

Deb Smith makes sure the place remains legal. Each year she pays $160 to maintain the federal mineral leases. Each month she files production reports to both state and federal regulators for her oil wells.

And she feels guilty.

“I feel horrible I wasn’t able to maintain it,” she said, sitting on a chair in the double-wide trailer home she shares with her husband, Gary Wilson. “It wasn’t just my parents’ dream. It has historical significance and I feel like I’m the only one who feels that way.”

Deb began working for the family business at the age of 13. When she got older and her mother, Edel, died, she took over running the gift shop and the business. She kept the wells and the other mechanical objects in working order.

Standing in the middle of the Gift Tank, she is surrounded by what is still a gift shop’s inventory: rocks, plates, jewelry, cookbooks and figurines.

Much of it still neatly lines glass shelves along the wood-paneled walls, while other items sit on tables and under the glass of the counter. Deb Smith stands near the center of the circular building, the center point of much of her life, as she shows the building to a couple of visitors.

“This was my store, this was my way of life,” she said. “That’s why it was so hard for me to come down here.”

Her father is everywhere. Smith points out the storage tank that served as his shop, the Red Jacket-brand hand pump that sprouted from the well he dug by hand, the steam engine he had hoped to put into action, the battered and worn pick and shovel he used to dig the first well.

“He was amazing,” she said. “He was quite a man.”

And he’s still at the Accidental Oil Co. He and Edel, their ashes mixed together, are scattered on the hillside above the attraction, as they requested.

The wells keep pumping small amounts of oil, dutifully recorded and reported by his daughter. Regulations dictate that she can’t just walk away from the well or ignore it without plugging it properly. That would mean filling up the long ramp to the underground viewing room with concrete — not a cheap solution.

Accidental Oil Co. might not be worth opening for tourists, but it’s too precious to Deb Smith to disappear forever, even if it’s closed for business.

“Not for lack of trying,” she said. “I was trying to keep it all together, trying to keep it going.”

She says she’ll fill out the oil production reports until she dies. Then her daughter Anna will fill out the reports, she says, marking time from the day her father swung a pickaxe into the dirt, and dreamed.   (source)

We left the cabin about 9am, all but Kent headed out about the same time to do another hike (Kent had a slight fall on the way down yesterday and has an issue with his hand – very swollen, possibly broken fingers, but as a former wrestler – he’s tougher than the average guy).

 We drove through Breckenridge and Dillon – surprised by all the growth that had occurred in the 20+ years since I’d spent much time in Colorado.  The day grew warmer when we left the Fairplay / Alma area – they’ve had uncharacteristic wet and cold.

 Our evening destination was to see the musical duo “Moors and McCumber,” performing a concert at Kort McCumber’s land in the mountains outside Boulder. If you’ve followed my blogs, you might remember that they’re the duo that entertained us each night when we rafted the Middle Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho in 2020.  We saw them at a benefit concert for Music Makes a Difference, a Madsion based non-profit the night before we flew to Denver.  When we told Kort we were headed to Colorado the next day, he invited us to this concert – which was too good of an offer to pass up.

 We really had the day to kill, so we took the back roads to Boulder, leaving I-70 at the Idaho Springs exit.  We climbed the Central City parkway (paved with casino money), and when we got to Central City a festival was getting underway so we stopped and walked around a bit. It was going to be a beer festival and was just being set up.  We poked around and walked into an antique store and chatted with the clerk there about town history (gold mining, ghost town resurrected when Colorado government allowed gambling there and a few other places in Colorado in the 1970’s).

 From there, we drove through the mountains and to a funky town, Nederland – from there, along the beautiful Boulder Creek, through Boulder Canyon to the city of Boulder.  We parked and walked to the Pearl Street area, like Madison’s State Street but without the buses and delivery vans (no traffic at all).  The day had turned HOT, and there were many people out – families and college students just back from the summer.  We had lunch in a streetside Mexican café with awesome people watching, then walked to street, stopping for ice cream, and spending about an hour in a really cool bookshop!

 We walked back to our car and drove to a park along Boulder Creek.  When we’d driven by earlier, I saw people carrying inner-tubes up the path along the creek.  We sat in the shade and watched people tubing past – quite entertaining!!

 Back in the car, we drove about 40 minutes up windy mountain roads to Kort and Amy’s place – a beautiful spot of land along a little creek.  They’d set up a stage for the concert, and we had about an hour to meet other folks and shop in Amy’s jewelry boutique (www.cowboys-sweetheart.com).  We met some really interesting other M&M fans – most of whom were local to the area, or nearby Gold Hill, which sounds like an interesting place!!  We’ve heard M&M perform about a dozen times, but there was nothing like hearing them in this environment!  They had a talented young kid “open” for them, Piatt Pund.  Kort said they met him when Kort’s sister was teaching Piatt the violin.  He’s a super-talented multi-instrument playing young man – currently going to school in NYC – I have a feeling we’ll hear about him in the future.

 It was a great evening, wrapping up about 8pm, so we said good-bye and headed to the Denver Airport.  We stopped at the hotel and dropped our bags, then dropped off the rental car and took the rental car to the airport hoping to catch the hotel shuttle.  That didn’t exactly work, so we gave up and took an Uber to the hotel about midnight.  Great night’s sleep – easy travel home on Sunday, arriving home about 5pm.
