Long Xiaojiao: Who?

Ao Lie: Hey! There you are! Oh good, you’re not dead. That’s quite a relief!

Long Xiaojiao: Dead?! What?! What’s happening?! Is this what dying is like?!

Ao Lie: *laughs* No, no, no! Trust me, I’ve experienced dying and this is not it. Just a little spiritual communing. Completely harmless. I think.

Long Xiaojiao: Hey, I heard that!

"Are you going to disappear?"

Summary: Ao Lie’s descendant asks him a question after they finish watching a movie.

Based in: LMK AU - Spiritual Guardian AU

Ao Lie pauses and turns his head to look at the small child nestled against his side. She wasn’t looking at him, instead she was gazing rather intently at the screen of the TV, which was now showing the ending credits.

"What makes you think that?" He says after a moment.

Her grip on his sleeve tightened, not overly so, but enough that he felt it. She’d been holding onto his sleeve of his arm, which was tucked around her, for a duration of the movie.

“The turtle in the movie,” she was now holding onto his sleeve with both hands “he disappeared and” she was looking up at him now, with those bright jade eyes “he left everyone behind.”

Ao Lie smiled softly down at her. “You think I’m going to disappear in a cloud of peach blossom petals?”

“You could!” She protested.

He exhaled softly, still keeping a calm smile on his face.

“Don’t worry, I’m not going to disappear.” He reached down with his other hand and gently ruffled her hair as he had done many times before.

"But what if you do disappear?"

If he was being completely honest, he had no idea whether if at some point in the future, if he would in fact disappear, leaving her alone without him. He wasn’t even entirely sure about what kept him here to begin with. He didn’t voice any of those thoughts though, those thoughts wouldn’t help the current situation nor would they make Xiaojiao feel better.

Instead, he picked up his descendant and placed her on his lap, securely wrapping his arms around her.

“I simply won’t allow it.”

“You won’t allow it?”

He tapped her gently on the nose, with a light bop.

“That’s right.”

“You can do that?”

“I am a fierce and noble dragon prince, third son of the Dragon King of the West Sea, and the mighty White Horse Dragon. I daresay that I can do what I want.”

Xiaojiao’s eyes searched his face, as if trying to find facial evidence that he was lying to her.

After a few seconds passed, she stuck out her left pinkie.

“Dragon’s honor?”

Her expression was a serious one, or as serious as a little kid’s face could be. Her eyes were looking directly into his own, jade green meeting jade green.

Ao Lie chuckled lightly, bringing up his own pinkie to link with hers.

“I swear on my honor as a dragon, I will never disappear and leave you behind.”

I feel like at family banquets, Ao Lie is just telling Xiaojiao all of the gossip about the family members

And she has to try really hard not to laugh

Some of Ao Lie bonding with Long Xiaojiao (Mei) in LMK AU:

Xiaojiao (Mei) as a kid making flower crowns and other little crafts for Ao Lie, but he’s unable to hold them without them phasing through him. He appreciates them all the same.

Long Xiaojiao: I made you a drawing!

*she holds it up to show him*

Ao Lie: *smiles softly* Thank you, Mei *he reaches out and gently ruffles her hair* it’s a lovely drawing.

Little Mei catching bugs and showing them to Ao Lie. She reads him books about various types of butterflies, beetles, and whatever other books she can find about them.

Long Xiaojiao: This is a “giant Chinese stick insect” the longest known stick insect! *she shows him a picture of it from the book*

Ao Lie: Interesting, and what’s this one. *he points to a picture of another bug*

Long Xiaojiao: Oh, that’s a Asian long-horned beetle! *continues to tell him about the bugs in the book*

Ao Lie telling Mei stories about his adventures during his life. She asks him a lot of questions, particularly about any battles he fought and the dangers he faced.

Long Xiaojiao: Can you tell about the time you fought the celestial guard who became a yellow-robed demon again?

Ao Lie: *hums and smiles at her* I’ve told you that one over a hundred times now?

Long Xiaojiao: *nudges his side with her elbow* Come on, just tell me about how you bravely fought him off! One dragon against the fierce and vicious demon who had you imprisoned! The odds against you as he attempted to take your soul!

Ao Lie: *chuckles* Well, alright.

*he proceeds to retell her the story*

Ao Lie’s father and siblings are present in the Spiritual Guardian AU

And they have no idea that their lost family member is next to them, because they can’t see or hear him

So if Ao Lie can lift Mei and no one else can see him...

Has Mei managed to convince Ao Lie to help her to fool people into thinking that she can levitate/fly?

And even if not, one would think her parents would have caught Mei "floating" at least couple times during the years. Or is floating just a normal baby dragon thing? Since they can fly with their astral dragon form thing.

When she was little, she would have Ao Lie pick her up and run (or float) her around her room, which would make her feel like she was flying. Her parents have almost caught her "floating" a bunch of times, but Ao Lie always manages to put her down before they see her. (Or if he has to put her down somewhere high because he didn't have time to put her back on the ground, she may make up something like she just felt like climbing)

Once she's older, Mei would definitely come up with pranks where she fools people into thinking she can levitate/fly. Ao Lie is more than happy to help her prank people, he thinks it's kind of funny.

I don't think floating was something Mei did a baby, at least not unless Ao Lie was holding her, in that case, yeah, she'd be a floating dragon baby.

Just Out of Reach

Summary: Ao Lie visits the Celestial Jade Garden.

Based in: LMK AU - Spiritual Guardian AU

Ao Lie looked out across the courtyard, watching as the palace staff tended to the Celestial Jade Garden.

Memories of coming to this place in his early life filled his head, memories of how him and Cinxin would come here together as kids, memories of Mo Ang and him taking walks during the early mornings, memories of simpler times. A distant memory of his father bringing him here when he was just a little one drifted at the edges of his more vivid memories of his siblings.

(If it was so faint, was it even real to begin with? He was sure that his father was much kinder to him in his younger years, before he became too rambunctious for his family. And when he would make a mistake that nearly ended his life then and there)

This one memory always seemed to just be on the edge of becoming vibrant and bright, but never did. Instead, it remained just out of reach of his mind, almost like it was never there to begin with.

He laughed half-heartedly to himself at the thought. How a memory had become just like how he is now. On the very edge of being there, but never being able to break through that final wall and become visible.

As he went along the pathway, the attendants never once looked in his direction. Never once did they turn and bow in acknowledgment to his presence, nor say hello or good afternoon, or even smile. They simply went about their work as if he was never there.

Though, then again, he thought, no one ever acknowledged his presence anymore. Well, except for Xiaojiao, that is.

As he neared the end of the garden, another faint memory, one of a father that once smiled at him with pride, drifted along the edges of his mind, never once stepping into the light to become clear and lucid. Instead, it retreated back into the recesses of his mind, rejoining the shadows of thoughts that were long since forgotten.

I wonder if Xiaojiao finished her training exercises yet? Maybe I should check on her progress. With that, Ao Lie headed for the training grounds, leaving the garden behind.

Does Ao Lie ever miss having a physical form?

Yes, he does at times.

There are times where he misses being able to hold things and not have them phase right through him. Or being able to talk to other people without them acting like he's not there (because they can't see or hear him). Or being able to feel the ground beneath him. Or be able to eat something (he technically doesn't have to eat or drink anymore).

Ao Lie has become accustomed to his new form as a spirit, but sometimes he does wish that he still had his physical body.

Ao Lie just reacting to modern technology <- he actually figures it out after a while, but those first reactions were him not knowing what a TV was supposed to be or even how vehicles like cars worked

can ghost ao lie interact with anything, like make things float by holding them or would he just phase through everything?

He can't really interact with anything or anyone directly other than Mei. If he tried to pick something up, he'd just phase right through it.

So if her parents aren't able to see or hear him, what are their reactions to Mei interacting with Ao Lie?

At first, they just think that maybe their daughter has an imaginary friend of sorts. And since a lot of little kids tend to have imaginary friends, they don't really question at first. Though, if Mei ever mentioned to them what exactly her “imaginary friend” looked like, they might start to be a bit suspicious and concerned about it.

Once Mei is older, the "imaginary friend" excuse can't really be used, so she has to come up with ways to interact with Ao Lie without coming off as suspicious to her parents or other people.

One way she does this is by holding up her phone as if she is simply talking on the phone.

So, can Mei’s parents see Ao Lie? Or is he invisible to them?

In short, he is invisible to them and pretty much everyone else aside from Mei. So, they would be unable to see and hear him even if he was right next to them. Though, if he phased through them, they may sense his presence briefly.

Ao Lie can only really directly interact with Mei, which is why he’s able to pick her up and ruffle her hair and why they are able to have conservations.

However, he is able to indirectly interact with the world using his powers.
