Emily of New Moon [TV] (1998)
Drama
Tom McCamus plays a supporting role in S01E01
Young Emily (Martha MacIsaac) lives with her widower father (Michael Moriarty). Emily defends a fellow student from her abusive teacher and he hits her. Her father roughs up the teacher and as a result loses his job.
They plan to move to Charlottetown on Prince Edward Island but while they are packing their things, her father decides to climb up on the roof to get the cat (why do people do things like that? If cats can get up somewhere, they can get down.) But he has a funny turn and tumbles off the roof. Luckily Dr Campbell (Tom McCamus) is helping them move. But despite his efforts, Emily’s father does not recover. Her callous relatives discuss which of them should take her in, and none of them are keen on the job.
Emily is bright and imaginative, and remarkably optimistic in the face of the tragedy that befalls her. It is quite similar to the current show Anne with an E in many ways (even down to the point that Tom appears in an episode). Both series are based on books by Canadian author LM Montgomery.
I enjoyed Tom’s role as Dr Campbell. He is tough and no-nonsense but treats Emily with kindness and understanding.
And I can’t help but wonder if Tom was ever in a shampoo commercial. Of course he always looks wonderful but his hair was positively marvellous in this era.
Whenever I see Canada in film or in pictures, I long to visit again. Prince Edward Island was a place I hoped to visit on this year’s trip but unfortunately it didn’t fit into the itinerary. Hopefully next time, along with Tom’s hometown, Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Day 9: Sponti Saturdays S01E01
Love On The Weekend ang tugtugan sa sasakyan ni Zahra. It’s 6am on a Saturday. On the way kami to Mt. Maculot for my first climb of the year. I’m with Janine, Zahra, Jerome, and AJ, most of them first time climbers, but I was nonetheless relieved when Zahra lent us a ride for the day, taking off a bit of pressure from my shoulders.
Maculot’s been said to be a really popular mountain, and it’s understandable given the spectacular view of the Taal Lake at the Rockies. It’s the quintessential beginner’s climb, with the most bang for your buck view, only 3 hours away from Manila.
It wasn’t magnificent, but it was nonetheless a brilliant morning that greeted us on the way. Ang tagal matulog ng araw, that the sun was barely shining when we got there. The latter end of the highway seemed like a bad premonition though, as it began to drizzle little by little.
It was a pretty exciting first stretch. Sinama kami ng guide namin with two other ladies, who were P&G employees, no less! Sina Ma’am Betty and Ma’am Len, who worked at the Finance department at P&G. They were pretty interesting figures, and I was able to strike up a conversation with them, especially since I was also applying for an internship there. Enjoy sila kausap, solid haha.
But the excitement got cut off when we were at the rest stop and it took us about 30 minutes to wait until the guide got back. May isa raw sa groupmates naming hindi makahinga. Hindi ko na maintindihan haha basta sobrang naasar lang kami. We ended up na hiwalay rin sa guide, so parang wala rin. Kinda feel bad for kuya mehn.
Binati kami ng napakasolid na ulan sa isang rope section. Inabot kaming 45 minutes naghihintay, that Ma’am Betty and Ma’am Len decided to just go home already. Too bad, as Zahra was about to offer them a ride pa naman.
Naappreciate ko na yung turo ng LM na protocols. Lots of people climb without any regard for their impact.
So ayun, Lunch kami on the way to the Rockies. Nameet namin si Ate sa Ice Candy and she let us have our lunch there hehe. Crazy what lengths they have to go to just to make ends meet.
We decided to forego the summit and go to the Rockies instead. Matagal-tagal din ang pila. Crazy amount of people everywhere you go. There’s no escape. Luckily we were in the company of these three La Sallians and we were able to make conversation at the worst possible place–sa may ridge between Rockies and the campsite. After about 45 minutes na kami nakaakyat, sabay bumagyo. It was whiteout, but the company was great. Kahit humahampas yung ulan sa mukha mo vertically. Haha.
Madness. But happiness nonetheless.

Regina ‘live-watches’ Last Man: Zenmou no Sousakan S01E01
First up, discovering who is responsible for a series of bombings around Japan.
- Hiromi Minami (given name first, as that is how the character introduces himself, Fukuyama Masaharu’s character) gives off a vibe of being superficially charming -- not arrogant, but confident and easy-going. I actually like when Masha plays these types of characters, even when I find them fake. (This is not a criticism of his ability to act; I admire that he likes stepping into roles that are a challenge for him, and I also think he has an excellent handle on the motivations and backstories of most of his characters.)
- First time we see him, he’s being interrogated by airline officials because he’s carrying a gun, and once his credentials are verified the first thing he asks for is soba delivery. :D Gotta love a man, who once he returns to home turf, asks for local food.
- I’m not going to comment too much on anything concerning the character’s disability; I simply don’t have the background to know if the writers have done their research. Some of it seems plausible, and some doesn’t. Grain of salt rules apply.
- It’s both hilarious and ridiculous that Minami seems to be casually trolling Godo Shintaro (Oizumi Yo’s character) from the start, saying that they’re going to be good ‘buddies’ and dropping casual English into the conversation.
- Minami is a deductive reasoner, and seems to like disarming people with it. Godo’s first reaction is begrudging assistance.
- Point one for homoerotic subtext: Minami recognizes that Godo has entered the same space he’s in by commenting that he could smell Godo’s bergamot shampoo.
- A press conference is held, Minami arrives with Godo in a helicopter (Minami lampshades that this kind of grand entrance fits with the Japanese expectation of those from America). In helping Minami to the podium, Godo escorts him. Members of the investigative team, watching this on the news, comment that it’s like Godo is escorting Minami ‘down the aisle’ so point two for subtext.
- Oh, ho, ho, Minami is also a good manipulator of logical facts and Godo is less goody-two-shoes than he appears.
- Using his sense of smell, Minami almost apprehends the bomb-maker, but gets beaten for his trouble. Whump!
- A bit of chatter about how things are done in America, as compared to in Japan. I always find this amusing because it does reveal bias, but it’s also very fun to know how that bias leans.
- Oh my gosh. Both Godo and Minami are loose cannons. Already these two are corrupting each other in the best way. (Although Minami appears to be the best at the corrupting.) Timestamp: 36:30.
- Backstory time!
- Yes, definitely a disarming charmer, gaining entrance into someone’s private space.
- Not that it helps all the time.
- The action scenes are for the most part realistic and delightful because of it. No superhero nonsense here, just people doing things within the limit of what the body can handle.
- Love that one of the supporting characters is a young woman providing I.T. assistance. Usually that role goes to a young man.
- Teaser for story arc at the end. Hmm.

This was an interesting read to find right before the show ended, especially the speculation that Minami was faking his blindness. Personally, I'm happy that was not the case.

Rewatched S01E01 of Last Man:
The piano piece that plays as Minami uses his senses to gather data is beautiful. I hope that will be on the soundtrack.
