12 Tapes for a Penny
Tumblr media
Pairings: Lara Jean Song-Covey + Peter Kavinsky
Summary: Owen schemes to get as many cassette tapes as possible from a mail-order music club, but when his mom finds out she points the blame at Peter
Tumblr media
As Peter got older, he believed that his mother didn't trust him in certain aspects of his life - although he doesn't blame her...
Peter had some kind of suspicion over why, and also how, Owen was able to get so many tapes in the recent weeks.
The postman arrived at the door, and when Julia Kavinsky answered it, the postman said, "Got a package for Papa Smurfenstein,"
A confused look came over her, "I think you have the wrong address," he tells the postman.
"I suppose that means there's also no Inspector Gidget?" he asks, considering he was holding a pile of boxes.
"No," Julia says, with the postman then rattling off some more names of packages and she denied them.
"Gary Greyskull?"
"No."
"Snake Plotkin?"
"No."
"Ivan Drago?"
"No."
"John McClaneberg?"
"No."
"Hulk Hulkerstein?"
"No."
"General Zod?"
"No."
"Jean Claude Van Thunderdome?"
Julia was now sick of the multiple names being rambled off by their mailman. "What's going on?" She asks, crossing his arms.
Their mailman let out a sigh, whilst holding another box of tapes. "Let me guess. You have teenagers? Well, one of them's been using a lot of fake names to get free tapes," he explained, and it looked like Julia was seeing red.
"Well, I think it's obvious who's responsible," she stated, before slamming the door shut and stomping to go deal with who she believed to be the culprit.
Tumblr media
The tape box was put in front of her son, and the blame instantly stuck on him. "Me?!" Peter exclaimed, wondering how the hell he had got stuck with the blame this time - maybe he had done a few bad and very questionable things in the past, but that mainly came down to his ex-girlfriend,
"Yes, you. Who else could it be?" Julia asked, crossing her arms once again as she stared at her culprit. Peter picked up the box and read the name on the label.
"Kermit D Fonz?" Peter asks, looking from the label to his mother. "That has Owen written all over it," he said putting the box back on the table.
She sighed. "You expect me to believe Owen did this?" She asked, looking at her youngest son.
"Yes," he tells her.
"Owen?" She questions again, making sure that she heard her eldest correctly.
He sighs heavily, almost wanting his mother to believe him for once. "Owen," he confirms
"My precious angel," she says, with one of the many cringe-worthy nicknames she has for her youngest son.
He was starting to question her morals. "Yes, Owen,"
"Owen?" She was now pointing at her son, wondering why Peter was blaming Owen.
"He's guilty," he tells his mother, before looking at Owen. "Tell her you're guilty," he tells his brother. Wanting him to admit the truth.
Owen turns on his puppy dog eyes and speaks to her in the young child voice he has grown out of yet. "Why does he say these things, mama? I'm just a little boy," he tells her, and it is the tiny little things that make her melt and essentially bend to his will.
"See? He has an alibi," Julia tells Peter, who rolled his eyes at his soft mother. "He's a little boy," she tells her oldest son Owen's alibi.
By now, Peter was starting to lose his cool, wanting to get out of the house and see Lara Jean. After everything that happened with Gen and John Ambrose - they'd gotten to a place of comfort and trust. Lara Jean had admitted that she was jealous of Gen (which Peter had found strange and confusing. He would easily class Lara Jean as his first love that he adored. His relationship with Gen was more toxic on Gen's side...). "Why do you always blame me for everything? Just open the box and look at the tapes, and you'll see it wasn't me," he says, watching as his mother now opens the box of tapes.
As soon as Julia said the first cassette tape she picked, Peter gave his younger the look of 'idiot'. "Weird Al, The Songs of Fraggle Rock, The Best of Andrew Llyod Webber, and finally 101 Farts, Volume 2," Julia said, holding the final cassette between her fingers. Before putting it back, and placing the box back on the table.
"Hope it was worth it, Peter. You're grounded for a month. No phone, no lacrosse," she points out her two points with her fingers, making Peter's leg fall off his knee.
"A month without lacrosse? Are you crazy?" he asked, silently grateful that his mother didn't ban him from seeing Lara Jean, he would go crazy without seeing her for most of the day, let alone an entire month! He turns to Owen, "tell her!" he almost shouts, glaring at his younger brother.
Owen sighs, and looks up at his mother. "OK, fine, I-it really was me. I-it was such a good deal. I got caught in the heat of the moment. Which is also a song I got for a fraction of a penny," Owen admits, regret and guilt hanging in his face and eyes.
Julia shakes, not believing that her son is telling her the truth. "Shh, you don't have to lie for him anymore," she says, as both her son's look confused, Peter with a mix of disbelief (and the fact that he honestly saw this coming), and Owen with surprise that she didn't believe him.
"Seriously?" Peter exclaimed while Owen let out a confused, "What?"
"Let mama make you a banana split. OK?" Julia cooes at her youngest, and then turning to her oldest. "You get nothing," she states and walks away to the kitchen.
Owen sighs, and leans back into the sofa they are sat on. "Oof, tough break. Take Shelia E for your troubles," handing one of the tapes over to Peter, who throws it over the table and onto the floor.
"This is ridiculous. Why do I always get blamed for everything that goes wrong in this house?" He asks, letting his headrest in his hands for a second, before staring at a phone on the mantel, of the three of them when they were younger (the day after he first kissed Lara Jean and he was floating on a cloud).
Owen's eyebrows crinkle. "Cos you do most of it," he states, however, since being with Lara Jean - peter hasn't done half of the stupid things he used to, spending time studying for tests, going to more than half of the parties he used to.
"You know, if mom thinks I'm so bad, maybe it's time to show her how bad I can really be," he said, getting up from the sofa and walking away. Grabbing his house keys and leaving the house.
"Wait, this was you holding back?" Owen asks, before leaning back into his seat. "Oh, this is not good,"
Tumblr media
Peter went to Gabe's (one of his best friends on the lacrosse team), and they went to the mall. Somehow, his ex-girlfriend, Gen, ran into him, in the mall and dragged him around - and ended up stealing some things from one of the stores.
The mall cop had said he'd be calling Peter's mother, and Peter had requested if he could call his girlfriend Lara Jean. Which the mall cop allowed.
"Song-Covey house, Dan speaking," Lara Jean's father said when he answered the phone, he was there as much as he could be after they lost their mother when Lara Jean was 9-years-old.
There weren't many houses that had a second telephone line - but the Song-Covey house did. Lara Jean picked up the phone and waited for the click that signalled that her father had put the phone down. "Hi, Peter," she tells him after the click was heard.
"Hi, Lara Jean," he says, the love and adoration for Lara Jean bleeding through his voice into the phone and to the ears of Lara Jean. "Can you come get me from the mall, mom blamed me for Owen's tapes. I went to the mall with Gabe, Gen dragged me along and she stole things," Peter said, he heard her sigh when he mentioned Gen.
"Ok, I'm on my way, I'll be there in 5 minutes," she promises. they exchange goodbyes and hang up the phones.
Tumblr media
Peter was sat on one side of the table, Gen on the other and the mall cop was stood in front of them, with his arms crossed. "I stole something else, but you're never gonna find it," Gen says, almost smugly. Peter rolled his eyes, he knew Gabe was waiting outside the mall for Lara Jean to turn up.
"Your friend's weird," the mall cop said, Peter, kept his mouth shut that this was his ex-girlfriend.
That is when his mother turned up, and he knew he was in for another round of her judgment and no trust that he did anything right. "There you are. Classic Peter," she says, as Peter leans back in his chair, not surprised that his mother doesn't believe him. "You know, I actually started to think maybe I'd been too hard on you, and then you go and shoplift? And the worst thing is I'm not even surprised," there is it...
The mall cop looks over at his mother. "Actually, your son didn't do anything wrong. I was just having him stick around because this one is freaking me out," he points to Gen, who looks over at her ex's mother.
"It's true. Peter tried to talk me out of it, and I didn't listen," she said, before holding her stomach. "Oh, God, my stomach's in knots. Can I use the bathroom?" she asks, and the mall cop points.
"This way," he says, as they leave the room - as a way of telling Peter to deal with his mother.
Julia sighs, feeling very bad that she had gotten the wrong end of the stick. "So... Honest mistake, you know?" she says, before giving him a hopeful smile. "New video game, my treat?" she offers, watching Peter get up from his seat and standing up for himself in front of his mother.
"You know, you made me feel like such a bad person that I actually thought about stealing," he tells her, which makes Julia hang her head in shame.
"Honey, I'm sorry..." she tries to reach over and hug her son.
"I don't want to hear you're sorry ever again. No matter what I do, you're always gonna expect the worst from me!" he says, crossing his arms and glaring at his mother. Gabe walked over and made signals that Lara Jean was here. "You have no idea how that is coming from you. No idea," he walks away.
Tumblr media
Lara Jean was leaning against her car when Peter walked over. He smiled at the sight of her and wrapped her up into his arms. "Can we spend some time at yours?" He asks, now hearing the click-clack of his mother's high heels walking over to them. Peter and Lara Jean had been together for over two years now, and Peter had a habit of leaving his clothes round at the Song-Covey's (as did Lara Jean...).
"Yeah, of course," she replied, unlocking the car with her keys as Peter walks around to the passenger side.
"I love you, Covey," he said, then getting into the car. A smile brightened her face, as she got in as well.
Turning on the car and taking his hand. "I love you too, Peter," she replied before pressed a kiss to the back of her hand - like they used to do decades ago.

Hot Take For The Day - The team knew Jack and Ianto were sleeping together right from the start.
so I was thinking Torchwood timelines last night between the audios and TV series (trying to sort out when to slot in this fic I was thinking about writing) and Gareth David-Lloyd’s recent Dinner and a Show has me thinking hard about the janto kiss after Jack wakes up in End of Days, as well as the team dynamics in general.
So, Dinner and a Show is set while Jack is away with the doctor (between season 1 and 2 - personally I’d love Big Finish to do a whole run of audios set during that time) and in it, Ianto mentions spending time with Owen a few (months? weeks?) back and getting to know him better during The Last Beacon, which, because of references to what happened with Lisa, I had already assumed occurred mid-to-late season 1.
In The Last Beacon, during a scene at a bar, Ianto tells this girl “I’ve got a boyfriend, he’s big too.” And a few minutes later one of the girls refers to Ianto as “the gay one” which Ianto doesn’t seem to mind about at all.
Bringing in the kiss after Jack wakes up during End of Days and the team seemingly not surprised in the least about this (although it could just be another case of the Torchwood writers at the time glossing over the more personal stuff as they often did) and adding how Ianto is seemingly happy and comfortable to claim he has a boyfriend (even if it was in a joking way), which Owen has no response to, it makes me assume Owen already knew about Jack and Ianto. I’d always assumed that Owen’s comment of Ianto being Jack’s part time shag had been more conjecture on Owen’s part than actual knowledge - that the team didn’t know about Jack and Ianto, but their flirting was suggestive enough that Owen guessed something was going on. But in actual fact, his comment makes far more sense if the team did know that Jack and Ianto had been sleeping together from when they first got together (which, thanks to Broken, we now know was after Greek Bearing Gifts but before They Keep Killing Suzie and the infamous stopwatch line). Then added to the fact that Ianto was the one who initiated their first kiss in Broken, it seems to me that:
1) Ianto was way more comfortable with his sexuality and feelings for Jack than was previously portrayed or assumed by the fans. Ianto was quite obviously the one who pursued Jack. In the audio Broken, Jack’s reluctance to take their relationship a step further is obvious when he says “relationships at work are a bad idea”. Whether or not Jack was the first man Ianto was attracted to, or slept with, or whatever, he couldn’t have been struggling with his sexuality that much. Any reticence on his part might have been more to do with the fact he was a private person who kept a lot of himself to himself, not because he was with another man?
2) Jack and Ianto probably made no secret of the fact they were sleeping together and the team knew about it all along.
3) Which brings me to the question of WHY Jack would say in the Captain Jack Harkness episode “there’s no one.” My only explanation for this is that Jack instantly assumed he would be stuck in 1914 and have to wait 90 years to see Ianto again, so technically speaking it was true. There was no one for him in 1914 because his -- boyfriend? lover? significant other? -- was in 2006. Jack would have assumed that the team would follow his standing order not to open the rift, so maybe his despondency in that moment is more about the sinking realisation that Ianto is so far out of reach. I understand why Jack kissed Captain Harkness - that was about so many other complicated things that had nothing to do with Ianto. It’s the “there’s no one” line that really gets me.
4) Big Finish Audio, if anyone happens to read this, please have Gareth David-Llyod write an audio to explain what the f*#k happened between them after the Captain Jack Harkness episode.
I really love what Big Finish Audio are doing with Ianto’s character arc and his relationship with Jack, but my god, does it muddy the waters when compared to some of what happened in the TV show. I can only hope that the more Big Finish Audio content we get -- which is somewhat overwriting previously accept cannon -- then all of this will hopefully become clearer.
Bonus Gratuitous Janto Hugging

Thugs of Hindostan: Antagonist Llyod Owen is introduced – Let’s Know Who is he?
Tumblr media
Release of the movie titled Thugs of Hindostan starring Aamir Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh is awaited on 8th November. The makers have taken amazing strategy to present the movie to us. Even before the release of trailer, they are introducing the characters from the movie Thugs of Hindostan. Following to logo release for the movie Thugs of Hindostan, the character of Amitabh Bachchan has been revealed who has been named Khudabaksh - the biggest thugs of all. Just after a day, Fatima Sana Shaikh has been introduced as Zafira – the warrior with bow and arrow who never misses her target. Now, we have been waiting for the character reveal of Aamir Khan. However, makers have surprised us all with the introduction of villain John Clive. The character will be played by the British actor Llyod Owen.
Tumblr media
Aamir Khan-Fatima Sana Shaikh-Llyod Owen
Much about the actor Llyod Owen is not known. It is certainly the Bollywood debut for this British actor. Llyod has mostly worked in theatres apart from stint in television.  In the motion poster, Llyod has really hit the bull’s eye as the one of the British army captain. From the looks, it is quite clear in our minds that John Clive is a cruel soul. British army can be seen defending itself from the attack on the occasion. Sharing the poster, Aamir has said jokingly “John Clive..not to be confused with Robert Clive..as you can see he is one of the most gentle and kind souls. Loving, caring non violent, and generous. My idol! #JohnClive #ThugsOfHindostan | @yrf | @TOHtheFilm @SrBachchan @fattysanashaikh #KatrinaKaif”.

Hey, i just saw your post with Llyod and Gorman. What is this post about? What or who is Naoko? And what is Torchwood season 4 main range?
Oh boy, okay, so very recently (yesterday?) Naoko Mori (who plays Tosh Sato) and Burn Gorman revealed on twitter that they’ve been working with Scott Handcock on a Big Finish radio play. So a radio play starring Tosh and Owen will be released sometime next year, which is super fucking exciting. Then Gareth, Burn, and Scott revealed through that picture of Gareth and Burn that Ianto and Owen will also have a Big Finish radio play coming out next year. Because they so recently posted a picture of Naoko and Burn together, Gareth did a peace sign (which Naoko frequently does and Gareth makes fun of her for it). So Scott’s just making a joke and pretending that Gareth is Naoko, just because of the peace sign. The seasons of Torchwood reference the seasons of Big Finish, because they usually release a few radio plays, one per month, in a row before going on a break. I hope this helps!

Audio Recs!!!!
All the BBC Radio Audios are available on Amazon and apparently free on the BBC Radio player app (don’t know if that’s on a limited basis though). They’re set post season 2 and have a really nice Ianto, Gwen, and Jack team dynamic (and of course Ianto/Jack dynamic). Be warned that House of the Dead is a tear jerker though and is pretty hurty
Big Finish Audios on available on BigFinish.com. The older ones are about $7.99 and the newer ones about $8.99. Which is actually really cheap for these kinds of things:
Serenity. You want fluffy Jack/Ianto feels? This is THE Jack/Ianto audio for ridiculous domestic Janto feels. It’s pretty much an officially acted, canon fake!married fanfiction.
Torchwood_Casscade is a great Tosh piece and my favorite use of the audio format in any of these. It does kind of vaguely allude to the end of season 2 (sort, of its weird) so be warned about that though.
Last Beacon: Did someone say madcap Ianto and Owen solo mission (with camping and Owen being hilariously out of his element)? Written by Ianto’s actor, Gareth David-Llyod which is cool.
Dinner and a Show: Did someone say madcap Ianto and Tosh solo mission (while Tosh is REALLY drunk on bad wine)? Also written by Gareth David-Llyod. Kind of an unofficial sequel to the Last Beacon.
Iceberg: Honestly I kind of prefer my Owen a little snarkier than he is here, but this one really shows off what a good doctor he is, and deals a lot with his life pre-Torchwood. Great medical mystery plot.
Broken: I’m a little hestitant to rec Broken in this context because it’s VERY hurty, but hurt with a happy ending. Basically the story of the Ianto/Jack enemies to lover escalation between the season one episodes. Trigger warning for a suicide attempt.
More than This: Post-season 4, Gwen restating Torchwood officially and trying to get the permits to fix the hub—and bringing the permit guy with her alien hunting. The pacing is a little weird, but I really like Gwen in this one.
Fall to Earth: Ianto solo mission where the only person that can help him is the lady trying to sell him insurance over the phone. Really great character dynamic stuff.
Big Finish Full Cast Specials. These are more expensive because well...they had to pay a whole cast, but they’re longer and act as episodes:
Outbreak: I need to slap a “really weird to listen to during a pandemic” warning on this (features Cardiff getting quarantined due to a rage virus). However it has some great Jack/Ianto and Gwen/Rhys moments. Also that lovely Jack, Ianto, and Gwen team dynamic.
Beleive: Did some say All 5 Team Torchwood members set during season 2? Including the after interviews this is almost 3 hours of content. I’m not a fan of a choice they make regarding Owen pressuring Tosh into an uncomfortable situation undercover (there’s line with how much of an asshole you can let Owen be before it’s not ok, and tbh they cross it—though they do make a point in story for calling him out on it). But other than that specific issue it’s very fun and it’s nice to hear them bantering while doing a mission briefing. Some great character moments (especially for Jack and Ianto). And just REALLY nice to have all 5 of them.
hey hey, torchwood tumblr! does anyone have any particular recommendations for spinoff novels or audio dramas? (or fics!) now that i’ve finished rewatching children of earth, i would love more torchwood, but, like … less hurty.
i would especially love recs for:
gwen/rhys stuff
jack/ianto stuff
more tosh and owen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
just anything that’s extra fun or enjoyable

In Their Eyes - CH. 30
Perhaps your daughter simply has a mind of her own, Your Ladyship. You should be proud.
Alistair x Warden Cousland A love story told in the eyes of their companions and those who knew them.
[CH. 30] Noble Air | Dog
Between the growing number of companions joining their adventure and the mages accompanying them from the tower, the hound has been generously spoiled with affectionate pets, new playmates, and offers of food scraps. As they enter Redcliffe, the Warden’s party decides to check on things at the village while the Circle mages head straight to the castle to prepare for their ritual. Some of the mages are so torn up about parting ways from their new canine friend, the hound can’t help but whine sadly.
“Lucky dog,” Alistair mutters with a hint of jealousy. “You can go with them if you’d like.”
The Mabari barks a protest back at him. He’d never leave his master’s side!
Slowly but surely, the village is already starting to rebuild. Murdock is leading the reconstruction and happily informs them that they haven’t had another attack since they helped defend the village. Owen is reunited with his daughter as promised; Dwyn grumpily gets around to admitting that he’s glad to have helped after all and returns Sten’s sword that he got from a seller in Orzammar. Llyod even offers them free ale as he’s finally getting on the townsfolk’s good-side and told them he’s been thinking of renaming the tavern “The Warden’s Rest.”
Things seem to be going well, all things considering. The Mabari licks the Warden’s hand to say he’s so proud of her, and barks happily when she smiles and pets him.
“You’re a Cousland, yes?” Leliana suddenly asks as they make their way toward the castle.
“Yes, I am.”
“Your family is second in line from the royal family. That means you’re one step down from being a princess.”
The Warden laughs like it’s the most absurd thing she’s heard. “Alistair has a more legit claim to the throne than I do, and he actually has royal blood.”
“Don’t remind me,” Alistair grumbles. “I want nothing to do with the throne.”
“You’re a descendant of King Calenhad?” Wynne inquires with surprise. Alistair sighs as he walks beside the older mage and quickly explains how he’s the half-brother of King Cailan – sharing the same father, but different mother.
“Technically, we relinquished all rights to our names and titles when we joined the Grey Wardens,” the Warden adds with a shrug. “I’m just … me. Just like Alistair is just Alistair.” He grins at that.
“Still, it’s funny how this all worked out, no?” Leliana continues. “He’s a prince, and you’re sort of a princess. These are the sorts of tales that only happen in story books.”
“Right. And I suppose Alistair and I should get married and live happily ever after?”
“Hah. You won’t be able to land me that easily, woman,” Alistair loudly teases over his shoulder.
The Warden laughs and mentions, “Well, I’d certainly choose you than any of the men my mother would try to set me up with.”
Alistair suddenly stops walking, nearly causing Morrigan to run into him. “Y-You would?”
“You wouldn’t believe how entitled some of them are,” the Warden comments as the hound growls, remembering some of the stuck-up nobles that’d come to the castle.
“Oh, I know what you mean,” Leliana sympathizes. “I have met nobles who are petty and mean – complete degenerates. You’re not really like that, though. You have a certain poise and grace about you that has a noble air, but you’re very humble and considerate to others. You have a kind of dignity that shines and draws people to you no matter who you are or who they are. It’s refreshing.”
“Thank you, Leliana. It’s … very kind of you to say that,” she says happily.
They make it to the castle’s entrance, and their party begins to walk up the steps. However, Alistair falls behind to the Warden and her dog’s side. Nervously, he asks, “So, um, what … what kind of person are you interested in?”
“Oh, I don’t know … Someone strong and kind. Funny, charming, a gentleman,” she lists and, with a grin, she adds, “Someone like you.”
“I’ll … I’ll keep that in mind.”

Vanity Fair has released the first images from the upcoming CBS All Access adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand.
The images showcase the cast of the new miniseries directed by Josh Boone. According to the Vanity Fair article, this version of The Stand will shuffle the timeline and begin the story with the virus already rampant and the last survivors of the human race struggling to survive in the aftermath. The series will show the characters’ journeys before the virus spread and how they ultimately all came together.
Alexander Skarsgård strikes a pose as the villainous Randall Flagg aka The Walkin Dude in the upcoming event series.

Thugs of Hindostan: British actor Lloyd Owen looks menacing as antagonist John Clive in upcoming period drama
Aamir Khan tweeted the first look of John Clive, played by British actor Llyod Owens on 20 September. In the tweet, Khan sarcastically described the antagonist, calling him “one of the most gentle and kind souls.” Owens looks menacing in his uniform, slicked back hair and perfectly manicured moustache. The motion poster reveals that he has a…

- The Last Beacon
- Dinner and a Show
Both were written by Gareth David Llyod and feature Ianto being an adorable dork. Dinner and a Show also acts as a bit of a sequel to Last Beacon in that Ianto mentions having gotten to know Owen better and how Owen shows affection through off color jokes sometimes.
Torchwood_Cascade is a fun one if you’re a Tosh fan and really plays with the audio format well.
If you want to step out of the monthly range: both Beleive and Outbreak are full cast (Outbreak is set in early 2009 and has the Ianto/Gwen/Jack dynamic whereas Beleive has all five Team Torchwood members). Both have some good Janto moments but Outbreak has a lot more. (Only downside note about Outbreak is that it’s really weird to listen in a pandemic).
Can anyone recomend any torchwood audios? I've listend to 'serenity' and 'broken' and im not sure what to listen to next.

In Their Eyes - CH. 30
There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man; true nobility is being superior to your former self.
Alistair x Warden Cousland A love story told in the eyes of their companions and those who knew them.
---
“Hah. You won’t be able to land me that easily, woman,” Alistair teases over his shoulder.
