Right then, Chaps. Here be (to me) one of the best sketches that did ever best a best. Ryan Davies was a national treasure and I will die on that hill three times over. Self deprecating humor, poking fun at Wales and Welshness whilst also showing how absolutely awesome it is culture wise, language wise, and pure unfiltered talent wise (my bias is showing sorrynotsorry). I’m going to post a rough and fairly literal translation (apart from the poem itself because what he does with it is better... and also the whole point of the joke) with a few points added if I think there's something lost in translation. But honestly the humour comes from his performance more than anything
youtube
Translation: “ I have with me here the miniature harp. It's very handy. It fits handily in the boot of the car and we can move it around the place and so forth. It's very handy if you want food sometimes, if we happen to be passing a potato field... That's it! You’re working well Mrs Windsor, over there!... Throw the potato in this end and chips come out the other.
But I was using this harp in London to explain to the English in London how we sing Verses. Now you try to imagine how you explain something like that to a completely English audience. They don’t understand a word (of Welsh). I remember my friend and I went down to a little place called Slough*... Oh! It's this side that's sharp now!... And trying to explain to them what singing Verses was.
“My friend and me” he was from the North “My friend and me, we are going to sing you Pennillion, which is the singing of Verses. My friend by there will play you a hair”
“air, lad”
“A air on the arp”
“Harp, lad, harp”
“and I will join him half way through. The song that he is playing and the song that we are singing are, is the same song but is a different song and the object of the exercise is for us both to finish together. So it's every man for himself in the middle and God help us all at the end. It is called Cerdd Dant** Tooth Music”
And we were singing a small piece for them called Madog. You remember Madog don’t you? Ships of Madog, Madog going, to discover America, yes? You remember the piece? That’s it? Well you’re going to hear it again. I sang it like this first, then I‘ll translate it after.
Oh by the way, Llwyn Onn*** is this melody, “The Ash Bush”
“Wele'n cychwyn dair ar ddeg,
O longau bach ar fore teg;
Wele Madog ddewr ei fron,
Yn gapten ar y llynges hon.
Mynd y mae i roi ei droed,
Ar le na welodd dyn erioed:
Antur enbyd ydyw hon,
Ond Duw a'i dal o don i don”
That was Welsh, English now
See them starting ten and three
Of quite small ships on a dark blue sea
See old Madog brave his chest
As Captain of the ship is dressed
Go he is to put his foot
Where never before a foot was put
This is a venture very brave
And God will hold him from wave to wave
*He pronounces it phonetically (as if reading it in Welsh)
**Cerdd Dant is actually “String Music” “tant” is the string of an instrument mutated to “dant” (coz of those Welsh grammar rules init) But “dant” by itself is “tooth”
https://www.cerdd-dant.org/about.html
***Llwyn Onn more commonly known as “The Ash Grove” “Llwyn” has a few different meanings, grove, hedge, shrub, Ryan picks “Bush”
#ryan davies can do no wrong#playing a harp and singing like its nbd but it is a bd its a very bd#there are so many of his videos i can spam tumblr with#welsh humor#comedy#welsh language#iaith#cymraeg#welsh culture is music and poetry and nonsense#i know no one asked for this but i needed to do it#tymblr#thinking my thinks#wales being extra

The heart of Spectra’s grand forest Llwyn onn was brimming with strange and wonderful plant life and beings of a spiritual nature; that of the woodfolk no doubt. Auroran wandered the fantastical forests alone on a summer’s evening, he’d been out for countless hours trying to find the ever-illusive Spectran Ghost, a rose in which grew from the bark of the Llwyn tree.
Though, a sense of someone watching him struck Auroran; whoever this individual was had quite the connection to the warp much alike his own - except much more prominent. He stopped in his footsteps, craneing his head up and then side to side, someone certainly was here - he could feel it.
Soon, the Primarch decided to call out into the endless wood ahead of him.
“Helo? Is someone out there? I can feel you in my general vicinity.”
Perhaps coming out alone was a fault on his behalf, should it be something from the immaterium.

Morgan Presley emailed a photo: "Hi Mark! I first discovered your podcast a few months ago, and I immediately fell in love! I’ve discovered so many new songs and artists, and I look forward to each new episode. Your podcast has now become the soundtrack to my sewing. It’s a lovely addition to my hobby, and makes my weekend afternoons drafting patterns, pinning fabrics, and sewing seams even more enjoyable. I also listen to your instrumental episodes while doing my physics homework. Thanks so much for creating this podcast!"
MORGAN PRESLEY 1 & 2
Debra VanTuyll emailed: "Hi Mark --I was just listening to your podcast while I work on a research grant. Pictures would be way too dull to share. However, I heard you mention not knowing of any Irish bands in Atlanta. I'm sure you know John Maschinot. He has a group that plays some. Then, there's the Atlanta Junior Irish Ceili Band that Katherine Irwin Thomas runs.
Over in Augusta, you've got de Ceádaoin, which is also more of a ceili band. We do sessions twice a month, once at each of the two breweries here (come join us if you're in this area. We're at Riverwatch Brewery the last Friday of the month and Savannah River the middle Wednesday of the month) and occasional gigs. We're presently working on a Christmas CD that will feature some little-known Christmas jigs and reels as well as some better known carols. We'll send you a copy when it's out. Also, Lillie Morris has a number of children violin students, and they play occasionally in Harlem.
At any rate, my main reason for writing was to let you know that the Irish music scene may be nano-sized in Georgia, but there are a few of us fighting the good fight out here in the hinterlands! Best wishes from east Georgia!"
Ed Stoffer responded to a Celtic Music Magazine email: "Hey Marc, Yes I did get all the music downloads. Thanks so much, I've listened to most of them and they are great.
I've been listening for a while now, but sure which episode I started on but for at least a couple of years. Thank you for taking the time to produce the podcast.
I'm still relatively new to Irish and celtic music, but for the past 6/7 years my wife and I have been regulars at the Iowa Irish fest here in Waterloo Iowa. Some of our favorite artist are Scythian, The Screaming Orphans, Seo Linn, The Gothard Sisters, Gaelic Storm, The Langers Ball, Realta, and JigJam.
Thanks again for all the work you do to put the program together."
Ravus Caelum emailed a photo: "Mark - Thanks for doing the podcast. You asked for pictures of us while we're listening, so here's me working on chainmaille and unwinding with some excellent music after work."
Sarai Lorenzo emailed: "Hi! I'm listening to your podcast while working designing books on an editorial. I am from Galicia, Spain, a place that is linked closely to Celtic culture. Thank you for your work, the music and sorry for my english! Keep doing this amazing work!"
Check out this episode!

The sale of Flintshire to ENI!
The purchases began in early February 2017; 65 land purchases were made in February, 13 in April, 5 in May and 1 in October.
There is no indication from the data to suggest why ENI UK Limited purchased the land.
According to ENIs website: ‘Eni’s activities in the UK are currently carried out in all three areas of interest: exploration and production, gas and power and refining and marketing’.
ENIs website can be found at this web address: https://www.eni.com/en_IT/eni-world/country.shtml#united_kingdom.
So I wonder why they have purchased all this land? Growing potatoes maybe.
The land purchases made in Flintshire include a range of coastal land, farm land and potentially brown field land as well.
The land purchases have occurred in, around and/or between, in excess of 20 village locations: Axton, Babell, Brynford, Caewys, Calcoed, Connahs Quay, Cornist, Ffynnongroew, Flint, Flint Mountain, Gronant, Gwespyr, Holywell, Lixwm, Llanasa, Lloc, Oakenholt, Pentre Halkyn, Sarn, The Nant, Trelogan and Whitford. There has also been land purchase next to the A55.
The top 5 in terms of titles purchased are: Talacre with 18, Flint with 16, Babell with 9, Brynford 5 and Pentre Halkyn 5.
As previously, mentioned, the data does not shed any light on the purpose of the purchase, therefore we won’t speculate here.

So, here you have it; we have a company in ENI who openly lists their activities in the UK on their website as falling into three areas of interest: ‘exploration and production, gas and power and refining and marketing’. I’m going to allow the readers to consider the findings we have presented and make up their own minds.
If anyone does get any response from ENI on what they are up to, it would be great to hear from you. I have tried contacting them, but unfortunately they have not come back to me as yet.
