Hi im just half way through s4 and i dont really get why they brought may back? When he walks her to the boat i was like thats it? Also love loved the scene with tommy and alfie that episode, him trying to shoot the birds and tommy asking him to try his gin, very casual and comfortable of them 🤔
Okay, nonny, I’m gonna fess up .... I fuckin’ love May. I know this is an unpopular opinion (don’t crucify me, pls) but .... I actually like her relationship with Tommy way more than I do Grace and 75% of Lizzie’s respective dynamics (I don’t acknowledge what I consider the criminally flat and lazy writing of the Jesse and Tatiana subplots in this house. Again, don’t kill me). Admittedly, I can understand how her inclusion felt like an aside. She didn’t do a whole lot towards the plot, but I will admit that I fuckin’ adore this kiss  (lemme be the filling in that sandwich puh-lease) and I really do love the dignity with which May operates. In a way, their departure from each other felt like a genuinely mature moment between two adults who understand that in a better place, better time, different circumstances, there’s something good that could’ve been. But, yeah, I mean- Knight totally fuckin’ bellyflopped on May’s supposed decision to win Tommy over. (And I also have a big eyeroll moment reserved to what a fuckin Straight Male Fantasy the Derby Fuckboy Scene was, in that Tommy was leading on three separate women at once and kinda sorta, to varying degrees of harm, playing them for fools. I love this show, I just ... I wish I could have some fuckin’ words with Knight about how he writes all women who aren’t related to Tommy Shelby.OKAY, you didn’t message me to rant about my wife May Carleton. Tommy and Alfie's scene is fun as all hell and God, so many things to talk about, right? That's the first scene, I think, in which Alfie refers to Tommy as a friend, no? I absolutely love the scene. I love the physical proximity they share, I love how Tommy taps Alfie's shoulder and dips his head a bit to make eye contact and catch his attention, reel him back in. I love thatTommy asks Alfie for his opinion on the gin, explicitly aware that Alfie doesn’t drink, but deferring all the same to his expert opinion. I think it's genuinely fuckin' hilarious that Alfie offers to shoot what are essentially Brummie Pigeons.
The first time I watched that scene, I genuinely laughed out loud and ever since I've ... devoted too much time and attention to the importance of that small scene. We don't see many people in Tommy's life for whom he grants the same casual air, the same liberties- to some capacities, when we consider how often Alfie betrays him, there's nobody Tommy turns the other cheek for like that. We don't see Alfie's circles in the series, but I'll eat my hat if he regards anyone the way he does Tommy. They're unique to one another precisely because they are so akin to one another- they operate on different but complimenting wavelengths and you really see the fruit of that in their strange 'friendship'. we gays love to see it.
