Pricing Your Art - Make a Calculator
Today I went to an ‘Arts Skills Session - with East Gippsland Art Gallery’ and we got a quick ending segment on Pricing Your Artwork. This is an area in which I have always struggled due to issues with ‘imposters syndrome’ lack of overall confidence and issues surrounding ‘mates rates’. Without going too hardcore into my own issues the session proposed a calculator’ system that you develop on your own comfort zone to allow you one concrete pricing system for all your work. (You can even pop it in Excel to add up automatically) Key points in regards to using the calculator is: “You are worth being paid - even when starting out you have created a product and a service for your customer, that is solid fact.” “Trust your instincts - if you resent your customers after they purchase and take the work, you have undercharged - be honest with yourself” “Keep pricing consistent for all customers, if you charge differently for out of studio than in an exhibition than in a gallery it undermines your value and opens the door to people haggling. Stick to your pricing.” CALCULATOR: Break down the piece into 4 areas and assign them a value:
Experience: If artists were broken down into levels (Level 1 = amateur, Level 10 = gallery professional)
Time: Breakdown your piece into an hourly or daily rate based off your experience level. (I class myself as a level 3 and gave myself an hourly rate of $20 per hour. This is what I’m comfortable with knowing my minimum painting work is 2-3 hours, this is highly personal to you and your type of work) Size: Small, Medium, Large, Extra Large - classify a range of sizes relevant to your work and add a value to each. (Here I used my comfortable hourly rate and applied it to scale, Small = $20, Medium =$40, Large=$60 etc.) Cost: Direct cost of materials expended and a percent of tools. (Materials expended = a canvas, something used totally in the work. Tools = an easel, paintbrushes, digital drawing tablet, something used but not sold with the work - again be comfortable to the wear of your items, I add 5% for large hardware, small things like brushes I add 50% as I tear through them.) For this piece I have used one of my small pieces as a guinea pig: http://lizgridleyartist.tumblr.com/post/141998791010/clouds-with-copper-2016-oils-on-mdf-liz-gridley OK! Now get to adding: Experience (Level 3 = $20per hour) Time (3 hours) = $60 Size (Small) = $20 Cost ($5 - board was free, very little paint used) = $5 (Running total = $85) Now wait - we aren’t done - This is your ‘cost price’ the bare minimum of what went into your work, dependent to the gallery and exhibition standards of your country you must add a profit margin to invest in your practice. This is not a money grab - it is the worth of your training, patience and absolve in being a practicing artist and it is essential. In Australia a standard gallery commission rate guideline is a 30% take. So take your total above and add 30% to give your final price. Therefore final price for this work is = $110.50
This is the quick guide I was shown in the session - its not for everyone's taste but if you have no idea / are nervous / find yourself undercharging - might be a handy guide. Good luck out there :)
