I should archive my own lore notes as well, since I have the power of tumblr's tag system at my fingertips (makes posts easier to find and archive).

important world building concepts to understand wuthering waves lore:

frequencies: everything in wuwa is made of sound waves, and all world building stems from this concept. weapons are sound waves, people are sound waves, even concepts like fear and war are convertible to sound waves. everything is sound waves, also called frequencies. all frequencies can be transformed or distorted. frequencies also decay over time (ending in silence) and are usually not stable for long. this is why waveplates deplete over time, and why we use crystal solvents to stabilize.

resonators: some humans can directly manipulate vibrating frequencies (create "reverberations"), which gives them special powers that alter reality. for example: havoc rover can transform literal sound into feather blades, or gather them into an attack.

the lament: there is an ongoing calamity known as "the lament" (literally: music about grief) which causes destructive reverberations and other phenomena. the lament is what changed solaris-3 and reduced everything to sound-based physics, as well as brought waveworn phenomena like the etheric sea and tacet discord outbreaks.

remnant energy: holds "memories" but it's probably more likely that they are "stable" frequencies that haven't decayed or lost information or been distorted. aalto in act v: "various events across space and time from every dimension are recorded in the form of remnant energy." retroact rain is condensed remnant energy from the etheric sea. with these in mind, we can now think of reverberations as frequencies that have started the process of decaying, or frequencies that are no longer stable.

frequencies are data: frequencies can linger and be stored or act as data. frequencies are information. when tacet discords are defeated, their lingering frequencies create "echoes" of themselves. everyone except rover will store this as data in the gourd, and are able to use echoes in battle by simulating that data. this concept also allows us to simulate environments and events from memories. interaction with retroact rain and sonoro spheres can simulate the past because they contain the data and we "resonate" with them. when retroact rain happens over a large area, illusions pulled from the memories of multiple people can manifest at once. aalto explains that this is similar to how resonators "resonate" with the world as well. another example is the tower of adversity, which is a man-made sonoro sphere meant for simulating battles for the purposes of training.

frequencies can combine/converge: for example, rover can absorb echoes (others just store them in the gourd). tacet discords feed on other frequencies to keep themselves stable — hence why they attack us or even each other. they can also learn to mimic the frequencies they absorb often. ovathrax absorbs weapon frequencies from the norfall barren. from here, we can see why threnodians are more powerful than normal tacet discords. "if civilizations represent mankind's collective will, the threnodians embody our fears and struggles." threnodians can feed on the collapsed will of humanity (remember, everything is made of frequencies, and I really mean everything), and crownless and dreamless (ovathrax) fed on frequencies of "war" which is always abundant especially since the lament started

tacet fields: where tacet discords originate. longer dormant periods mean that the tacet discords are weaker. tacet fields connect to an "unknown space" through a white resonance cord, and feature a tacet mark and the etheric sea. now, who else do we know came from an unknown space with a tacet mark and "fell" (was pushed by a goddess) from the etheric sea?

convenes: I also think it's interesting that the way convenes works is that we created a white resonance cord and pull someone from the etheric sea. if you fight the crownless, you have interact with the resonance cord as well. really makes you wonder if threnodians and tacet discords are really any different from resonators. they both resonate with other frequencies. but what makes a resonator's own frequency more stable than a tacet discord, who has to keep feeding on others to be stable?

new natlan local legend achievement series (duelist) is such a nice namecard but holy hell those local legends are no joke (fun challenge that you can't get in the overworld but ive legit ran out of fried eggs hello)

conclusion of my namecard grinding is that i NEED to crown baizhu. man has been working overtime tanking hits and being able to attack from a distance (semi automatic afk team (baizhu, em raiden, furina, and nahida) i love you)

okay here me out. is there actually a meaningful difference between rover and threnodians?

first, everything in wuthering waves can be reduced to frequencies, right? weapons, people, monsters, concepts. so you can think of threnodians as powerful tacet discords that have merged so many frequencies unto itself. ovathrax consumed weapon frequencies, for example, and that's why it's the threnodian for the concept of "war"

now, threnodians and tacet discords both originate from tacet fields, which are locations that feature the etheric sea and connects to "an unknown space"

now, who else do we know "fell" from an etheric sea? and can absorb echoes (frequencies) to themselves? (everyone else stores echoes in their gourds; rover literally absorbs them through their hand, which is why baizhi wanted to check their health in huaxu academy).

like. is this scene not supposed to parallel the opening cinematic of lucia the goddess appearing out of a tacet mark and pushing rover down to earth?

the only difference, I suppose, is that tacet discords (and therefore, threnodians) are decaying frequencies that absorb other frequencies to stabilize themselves. whereas rover is pretty stable regardless if they absorb echoes or not

but like. who's to say rover did not originate from the "unknown space" that the tacet fields link to?

who's to say rover isn't a special stabilized threnodian of some noble concept the way ovathrax was a threnodian of a chaotic concept like "war"?

like, maybe the reason rover is stable is because they're remnants of the first resonator, manifested over and over again by the goddess; much like how retroact rain -- which are condensed remnant energy -- can manifest illusions of the past

wuwa has so much potential for knife twisting quests but they don't linger long enough for the knife to be twisted.

like yeah we have jinhsi's dead baby backstory, lingyang who "yanked all of its fur, filed down its claws, twisted its bones, and learned to stand upright" to be human, and they do have the atmosphere down like with the red screen in xiangli yao's quest, or the upside down city with jiyan, or that shepherd and lamb story with scar, etc etc but like... they don't linger too long on it, like they present the knife but don't stay long enough to twist it.

of course it's still early game so maybe later down the line some knives will twist the way some guns will fire as dictated by chekhov. come on kuro, I know you want to twist them, please tell me you'll twist them

okay I'm trying out carlotta's trial... this is just lee hyperreal. they really just copy pasted lee hyperreal from pgr to wuwa, but made him an italian glacio girl (okay not REALLY but this is obviously a hyperreal moveset. like. the similarities are uncanny. there is clear inspiration taken from him, and maybe a little bit from bianca veritas with the sniping move as well)

I am not complaining btw because hyperreal is sooooo fun to play and carlotta is just as fun, if not... more, tbh? maybe it's just because they're stylistically different despite having a similar moveset. hyperreal feels like you're going into the matrix; carlotta feels like you're elegantly dancing around your enemies, kingsman style. both feel soooo fun to play

also carlotta having the same voice as shadowheart... they're really putting everything in her. honestly I'm just glad she's finally out of design hell (she used to be chun in the beta, then I think they split her design in three characters: lumi, camellya, and now finally carlotta)

though I wish they kept the headpiece from her concept art, and she's more red than pink like here. but whatever, it's fine

anyway. wow wow wow she's fun to play.

I so badly need rover to have a backstory where they ran away from their duty/responsibility in the past. idk I just think it'd be interesting. maybe they were napping at the beginning of the game of their own accord, until "lucia" woke them up

rover's a god right? or like some kind of guardian? maybe one who was never in a position to "make choices" and thus went down to experience that?

but. where does abby/"lucia" fit into all this

if you can parse through the jargon, wuthering waves is really just a game that happens when you turn everything into sound waves and make the physics be based on sound waves. weapons are sound waves, people are sound waves, even concepts like fear and war are convertible to sound waves. everything is sound waves — or "frequencies"

frequencies can converge and form new patterns, new frequencies? that's literally how echoes stabilize themselves. hence the "discord" in the name -- dissonance. they are decaying frequencies, and they feed on other frequencies to keep stable. ovathrax fed on weapon frequencies, or "war" frequencies, and that's why it's strong enough to be classified as a threnodian!
