hi, sorry to pop in like this. i've followed you for a while and i was intrigued by your mota posting, so when i was on an airplane recently i watched the first three episodes on the free in-flight service, and... first off THANK YOU for that. i have now finished the whole series and fucking loved it??

anyway, second off--i hope this isn't too awkward but i was hoping i could ask a million questions about like...... what your experience is writing fic and how you tag things and approach the historical aspects etc? i've just started poking around at the ao3 tag but i'm getting fic ideas and i'm not sure how to go about the tagging/writing/etc

First and foremost, I would recommend following @hogans-heroes who knows all things plane and has written up some good info on how they work. And also pilots in general

@thatsrightice has a TON of good research done about the irl boys as well

And in general check out the tag for all our lovely lovely writes there's so many to name.

For meeee i think the HboWar fandom understands the separation from the real guys and the fictionalized versions we play dolls with. Some people will put disclaimers but not all. Generally you're not going to piss anyone off by exploring them through a queer lense so long as nobody's harassing the real family members (really only find them in the FB groups. @bcolfanfic has had some sweet exchanges with the Egan and Crosby family)

In terms of researching, my kind of separation from the real people is that I only take show canon as fact. Anything not included in the show about the real guys I don't follow. That's what feels respectful of me! But there's so many lovely writers out there who do follow the events of their real lives and such good content for 'canon' fic.

In terms of researching Google is my best friend as well as the historians we have in the fandom. (Hogans-Heroes again is a gem. @reallylilyreally has a great attention to detail and we also have a few current/former service members who family of service members who are good points of reference!)

In terms of other research. the Masters of the Air book is a great go to

Cros actually wrote a book called A Wing and a Prayer which is a great resource and also pretty heartbreaking!

I personally referenced The Evening Crowd at Kirmsers by Ricardo Brown for queer underground culture in the 40's

Coming Out Under Fire is a fucking devastating but really helpful book about gay service members in the 40's and kind of the danger they were in. @bcolfanfic also has some excerpts from that she posted a while back if you don't mind digging.

I've also used ancestry.com to research the guys as well as these websites contains the personnel and mission files as well as photos of the guys!

Even though HBO has a solid track record with casting non-American actors for their war dramas I'm getting concerned that no significant amount of dialogue has been shared in the trailers by anyone BUT Austin Butler, barring a single line from decidedly non-American Freddy Carter (which sounds fine for anyone worried, it's just American Kaz Brekker in a PLANE) and another actor who appears to be American.

okay i slept on it and i think the summary of what i feel was wrong with tri really is "this is misery porn"

like, of all the new characters introduced (daigo, himekawa, meiko, meicoomon), all of them needlessly suffer to a degree the legacy cast isn't really allowed to feel (at least not genuinely to me, since we know the epilogue is canon--- the fakeout in movie 5 never could have worked)

and like, by the end of the movies literally only one of them is left alive because the others all die horrible, horrible deaths???

i don't necessarily need all of them to survive, but i do think that their deaths feel cheap, narratively speaking, and compounded with tri's obsession with mentioning other things without entirely thinking about the consequences (yggdrasil, apocalymon, the dark masters, the four holy beasts, the quantum sea, reboots in general, oh look it's the digimon emperor!, etc.), it makes the experience feel a lot less pleasant to rewatch.

i do recall enjoying tri when it was coming out, but that was as it was coming out. the fact it doesn't hold up when you know what happens is frustrating to me.

ouagh, anyways, i think i'm almost done talking about tri, but i did try to go into the tag and look for any previously existing commentary. i could not find any that easily (tumblr really gets mad at you when you scroll past so many gifs), so if you're someone who likes tri in any way, i'm inviting you to come into my ask box or reblog this post with things you did like about tri that i may have missed.

i did enjoy enough of tri that i really want to hear what folks who like it saw in the movies. while a lot of my liveblogs were bitching about the movies, it's a lot easier to verbally complain about things that frustrate me than it is for me to vocalize the lots of little things that i did like about tri.

i know i vocalized how much i enjoyed izzy and sora's characterization in loss, but i barely spoke any about the second and third movies (i think? idk i literally just sat down and enjoyed those two movies for the most part) because i was too busy just enjoying the silly shenanigans. the school festival and hot spring stuff may come across as "filler" (air quotes because genuinely what the fuck does that mean these days?), and maybe they could have better spent that time fleshing out parts of the plot that they really should have let bake a little longer, but also??? if we didn't have those scenes, idk if i would have been so fucking pissed about the hand bandai dealt meiko and meicoomon.

Before I leave tomorrow on my vacation I thought I'd request a show/series that is very dear to my heart. Like, if you made me pick between this series and Ninjago I'd mostly likely pick the former.

The series is called Kekkaishi. It's an anime and manga by Yellow Tanabe. The anime ran on Adult Swim between October 2006 to February 2008 and the manga ran from October 2003 to April 2011 with 35 volumes (one more than Attack on Titan btw).

I dunno if you're into anime or manga.....but....it's so forgotten. So not known. It hurts me really. When the anime was airing and the manga was still being made, it was so popular and highly ranked....but now...

I grew up watching Kekkaishi along side other young children shows like Spongebob, Fairly OddParents, Danny Phantom, etc.

The basic summary boils down to this: Two families that are called Kekkaishi or "Barrier Master" guard a mystical site at night from creatures known as Ayakashi (different than "demons", those are a separate thing). They've done it for 400 years. Oh, and the "mystical site" is the grounds of a middle/high school building. The protagonist is Yoshimori Sumimura and......

But anyways, the anime was canceled after 52 eps; I don't know why. I wish it wasn't. THERE'S SO MANY ARCS I'D LOVE TO SEE ANiMATED!!!!! The Julia mini arc! The Blank Box arc (my personal fav), the Healing Hidagou + Tokine Imprisoned arcs, and the Final Sealing Arc (would LOVE to Ufotable animate honestly)

You don't have to liveblog it but I'd still love it if you'd watch it. Plus all 34 volumes can be bought on Amazon!

Icy, it seems you and I have a lot of shared interests so I'd thought I'd at least share this one with you. I hate how something I love so fondly is so unknown (it honestly makes me depressed thinking about it)

Oooo, I've kind of heard of Kekkaishi. I had a couple of ex-friends who were reading the manga when it was still coming out. I don't know if they ever watched the anime tho (probably, if it was on Adult Swim).

I haven't read any manga in a while. I was taking a break from the anime culture for a little while and just haven't gotten back into it. The aforementioned ex-friends were kind of the reason why. I'll probably start again by rereading the first series I ever completed (Chrono Crusade) that 1 or InuYasha. Again.

I'll def keep Kekkaishi in mind. It looks and sounds interesting. I might add the anime to a poll, just to see if anyone else is interested in seeing me liveblog it.

Lily liveblogs: Thunderbolt Fantasy 4x10

This episode is full of fanservice in the best way possible, by which I mean, Gen Urobuchi et al. know what I want and serve it up with style.

Bo Yang Hou tries to convince the Dong Li prince to help deal with the GIANT FUCKING HOLE TO THE DEMON REALM, but no luck, so he's like, "fine, we'll deal with it ourselves" and pulls all the Hu Yin Shi out of an upcoming ceremony, to the prince's shock

meanwhile, Shang et. al find the lotus macguffin sword and it's literally an air purifier, lmao - cleansing the area around of it of miasma and bringing life back to the wasteland.

(they are TOTALLY using this to return Lang Wu Yao to human form + healing the broken world by the end, aren't they)

Juan Can Yun continues training with baby Shang and unintentionally inspires his sword style...

...until a timer goes off, and Shang's like, "Welp, it's been fun, master, gotta go" and takes a scrying mirror back to the Void Junction....

... where he's just going around and studying with sword masters throughout time and space???

...and there's an old guy there who doesn't speak who we've never met before???

WHAT????

WHAT???

I have so many questions, but this season is so compressed we may never find out anything more but also, wtf??? Baby Shang is just living in the Void Junction now, using it like the Wood Between Worlds in Narnia??

no wonder Shang is so tired, he was a shounen protagonist who aged out of his demographic without losing the protagonist part

elsewhere: Bo Yang Hou leads a caravan of Hu Yin Shi (Jun Po's men from S3) with a cart chock full of macguffins, lol

Meanwhile, Lang is still cooking in his cocoon, and a pack of hanjiao show up and devour Ansarto's corpse.

Ling Ya waxes philosophical about how death comes to us all, even demons, and why can't they just go home and be happy. Unfortunately, Lang continues the ongoing trend of not listening to Ling Ya's advice.

The hanjiao turn to their next victims, and Ling Ya protects Lang by transforming into a human and using magical strings to murder him.

HUMAN LING YA, HUMAN LING YA, THIS IS NOT A DRILL

he even gets a character poem!!! something something power of friendship something something murder is sexy

also his VA drops the comic relief voice and goes to "sexy demon" so, A+ choice there

Lin-as-Mantis snitches on Wasp and Spider and Locust was like, "lol, so over that"

also he calls "Mantis" out as a fake, but doesn't give a shit as long as he does his job, hahaha

Locust comes out in person and they're joined by Azi and Xing Hai to go meet the demon king

... it's an evil version of Lin, wearing an outfit very similar to his Takarazuka stage one with all the feathers, and a demonic version of his pipe

both Lin and Xing Hai look like they're going to faint but for drastically different reasons

okay, yeah, actually, I do: I stand by my assertion that we didn't need Shang and Lin's backstories, and I think this particular twist is a little too convenient, but also: demon king Lin in that costume is one hell of a compelling counter-argument and the reveal (complete with the "Lin trolls someone" theme) was exquisite, 10/10, no notes.

I showed Silver the Takarazuka oufit a while back and their reaction was, "this needs to be in the show", and here it is as a dark evil goth version, and it's glorious

so like, yeah, I have questions, but also this show's got my number and I am willing to go along with it, hahaha

if Xing Hai ends up marrying the demon king once she gets over the initial shock, I will laugh so hard

when I said Lin might end up being the villain this was not what I meant, lol, but I'll take it

you can tell this season got compacted because the pacing is on steroids (any ONE of these revelations would have been enough for a single episode) but once again, every time I think I've seen it all and this show can't possibly top itself ever again, it proves me wrong, and I'm so here for it

okay, the season's almost over, so here are some predictions

it will probably end on a cliffhanger, with the demon gods awakening and the resumption of the War of Fading Dusk

Someone is going to summon the demon god with the seals; my money is on Lang Wu Yao, because he thinks it will help him defeat Azi. It'll probably work, but at the cost of consuming anything left of Lang's humanity and transforming him into a demon god to lead the others in the assault on the human realm, because irony

.... unless our heroes can stop him in time and pull him back from the brink???? I hope so, but there's too much ominous foreshadowing for me to say for certain.

no matter what happens, it's going to be a wild ride and I'm so here for it

Frieren Liveblog- Chapters 49-52

Welcome back! It's been a bit. Been busy writing smut and making niche mods for niche games. Last we left off, no one we cared about died, so that's nice. And Frieren got got by another mimic, so that's nice.

Good to see the golems are as good at their job as you'd hope. And I see Sense is yet another member of the golem appreciation club.

Frieren, if you had the situation under control, why did you spend a minute screaming and panicking?

The path of least resistance is a great spot to put your favorite traps. (Also, a bonus mimic)

Fern continues to act like Frieren's mom. She's just so glad to see her happy!

Hmm... the other mages will be able to get away with rock-paper-scissoring they way past, but I'm a little frightened what a Frieren doppelganger would do. Then again, if the creation of these clones is fueled from some source, it might not have the juice to make a Frieren clone.

Well, shit. Speak of the devil.

If it is channeling her personality, then they may not have to worry about it going all out. On the other hand, it could make use of all her underhanded tactics.

The hell is she up to? I really can't get a read on Ubel's motives.

Ah, of course. She wants his sweet doppelganger magic. Doesn't change the fact that she literally risked her life to pull that off though.

I'm still skeptical about how strong this thing is. It was created by a demon. Unless this is some sort of demon elder god, I'm not sure how it would create a clone stronger than itself.

Hmm, her wording is oddly specific. If I'm correct about this clone having less of a mana pool, restraint magic might work.

Hmm. Sense said she wouldn't help or hinder any of the contenders. I wonder if this clone will follow the same behavior? Also, apparently she has hair powers? That sounds neat.

Well, so much for that idea. Time for Edel to gtfo, and for the others to come up with another plan. Just lure it to Frieren. That should do the trick.

Well, we know for a fact that Fern is quicker at casting than Frieren. I imagine her idea hinges on that.

I'm glad everyone is in agreement that Frieren is a precious cinnamon roll who could easily destroy them all.

They have every reason to hate you Richter. You literally tried to kill them despite your partner telling you no. Anyway, judging from who is still missing, I'll bet Land and Ubel will be pivotal to beating her.

I'm not quite sure I understand what this weakness is, but I have a feeling it will make more sense when they exploit it.

I vaguely remember an epic mage battle I saw as I clip back when the anime was airing. I wonder if that's about to happen?
