Welcome to The Guinness Tavern by the Double Decker, a place where you can experience the best of both worlds: the warmth of a good old-fashioned pub, and the sophistication of an upscale bar. We're proud to be one of Brandon's best places to enjoy blended mixed alcoholic drinks, cocktails, wines, and draught beers—and we're even prouder to be serving up delicious food.

What To Expect When Moving To Manitoba
From the arctic tundra to prairie grasslands, Manitoba is home to amazing museums and interesting festivals. It is also known as the polar bear capital of the world. If you are moving to this province, there are many things to consider when getting to know your new home. Let’s take a look at what to expect when moving to Manitoba.
Overview
Manitoba has a population of just under 1.4 million. Of these, roughly half live in Winnipeg, which is Canada’s seventh largest city. Manitoba is well-known for its polar bears and cold weather but also features many lakes and beaches for fun during the summer months. It is also a wonderful place for watching the aurora borealis, which can be seen in Churchill over 300 nights a year.
The economy of Manitoba is largely driven by its natural resources. The southern half of the province is largely dedicated to agriculture including grains and cattle. Top products include sunflower seed, dry beans, oats, and potatoes. Forestry, mining, and oil are also major industries while tourism is a strong contributor as well.
Housing Market
The median home cost in Manitoba is $293,000, representing a slight increase over the past year. However, homes will cost a bit more in Winnipeg where the median cost is $390,000 representing a 14.7% increase. Condos in Winnipeg represent a cheaper option with the median price sitting at $233,600 at the end of 2021, representing a 16.1% increase over the prior year.
Average rent cost in Winnipeg is $1,050 for a one-bedroom apartment and $1,330 for a two-bedroom apartment. Both of these figures illustrate a increase of roughly 3% indicating that rent prices are growing much slower than home prices.
Culture & Recreation
Much of Manitoba’s culture is rooted in First Nations tradition. This is particularly true for the province’s musical and dance heritage. One dance, the “red river jig,” serves as a fusion of First Nations pow wows and European folk dance. There are many museums and festivals throughout Manitoba dedicated to preserving First Nations culture.
Manitoba is also home to some of the oldest arts centres in Canada. The royal Winnipeg Ballet is North America’s oldest ballet that is still in operation today. Meanwhile, the Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre is Canada’s oldest English language theatre. Winnipeg is the home to the majority of the province’s arts scene featuring these venues as well as the Manitoba Opera and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.
While there are a variety of festivals in Manitoba, one of the most popular is the Winnipeg Folk Festival which attracts over 70,000 attendees each year. The city is also home to Festival du Voyageur, a ten-day winter event that celebrates the nation’s French heritage and roots in fur trading. Finally, the multicultural Folklorama is one of the biggest draws in terms of tourism.
Manitoba is steeped in natural resources, meaning this is a great place for recreation. Whether you prefer hiking, kayaking, or geocaching, there are plenty of places to take part throughout the province. It is also a great location for hunting and fishing. Fans of winter sports will enjoy snowshoeing and cross country skiing.
Things to Do
There are plenty of amazing things to do when you move to Manitoba. In fact, it will take you quite a bit of time to explore this vast province. Here are some of the things we think you should definitely add to your to-do list.
Churchill. While your first thoughts may turn to Winnipeg, Churchill is a must visit in Manitoba. This town on Hudson Bay has plenty to do. You simply must take a polar bear tour where you can get face-to-face (behind protective bars) with the creatures. It is also a wonderful place for seeing the northern lights and even kayaking with pods of beluga whales. This is not to be missed.
Riding Mountain National Park. One of two national parks in Manitoba, this park north of Brandon provides a great location for wildlife viewing including moose and bear. It is also a great place for a romantic getaway to the town of Wasagaming on the shores of Clear Lake. During spring and summer, this is a great location for golf and boating.
Manitoba Museum. While Winnipeg has many museums, this one is perhaps our favourite. It is dedicated to science and heritage education and features a planetarium. The Science Gallery is a favourite of children with many hands-on activities to help them learn and explore various scientific principles.
Thermea Nordik Spa. If you are looking for some relaxation, look no further than Thermea. This spa has four outdoor baths, four saunas, an exfoliation room, a restaurant, and a lounge. However, what draws many people is the Aufguss Ritual, a German ritual that aims to create a multi-sensory healing experience.
International Peace Garden. A site celebrating the peace between Canada and the United States, the highlight of this place is the floral clock, which creates a unique design each year. The water gardens are another place not to be missed including the Sunken Garden and reflecting pools. This is a great place for picnics, hiking, and biking. You can also spot wildlife including deer and moose.

New Music | Pretzil Stex
Pretzil Stex is a jazz quartet collaboration from musicians who converged in Manitoba, Canada at a certain time and place. Recent Brandon University faculty Jeff Presslaff (piano), Matt Steckler (sax), Eric Platz (drums) and BU alumnus James Hamilton (bass) met weekly during the 2019-20 academic year to improvise, flesh out new creative concepts, and workshop new pieces and arrangements. They performed two well-received shows at Brandon University and CCFM Mardi Jazz in the spring of 2020.
Garden Variety by Matty Steck, Pretzil Stex
But the story goes further back than that. Presslaff, Platz and Steckler themselves hail from the northeast USA. Matt met Jeff (a family friend) as a kid, captivated by the latter’s quartet which featured the legendary Cornelius Bumpus (Steely Dan, Doobie Bros.). He also knew Eric as a fellow grad student at New England Conservatory, where the two were often called on to perform with visiting artists Marty Ehrlich, George Lewis, Steve Lacy and others. All four have an association with the Winnipeg Jazz Orchestra (James’ father is noted bassist and educator Steve Hamilton), and for those familiar with the music community in that region, the project had been one of the most anticipated groups in the making.
As individual artists, the musicians have also been heard with Matty Stecks & Musical Tramps, Ron Paley, Papa Mambo, Carrie Rodriguez, Joe Lovano, Bill Frisell, Jim McNeely, Lonnie Plaxico and many others, at festivals internationally and at distinguished venues, including the Blue Note, the Kennedy Center and Austin City Limits.
With this first recorded effort, Garden Variety aspires to spread the gospel that live bands still make something extraordinary from the ordinary. The repertoire is co-written by Presslaff and Steckler, who individually have received critical acclaim for their compositions. The illustrious Wayne Shorter has said Presslaff “gets the harmony just right!,” while Downbeat and Jazz Times have described Steckler’s writing as “delightfully eclectic” and “inspired by greater artistic depth.” The music of Pretzil Stex promises no less, and is best characterized by melodies that stick, (re-)harmonies that bend, rhythms that crunch, and bold improvising personalities - taken seriously, but with a grain of salt…

2019 Travel Grant Recipients (last round)
From Vancouver, Amsterdam, Tokyo, and Glasgow, 34 local artists have stamped their passports with support from the EAC’s travel grant program.
Edmonton’s artists are constantly creating innovative and inspiring new work that begs to be shared with the world. With the support of programs like the EAC’s travel grants, our artists are encouraged to seek out unique opportunities to train and showcase their work, and bring the knowledge and experiences they’ve garnered back home to share with their communities.
With assistnace from a Travel Grant, Randy Kohan and Zaira Makhacheva experienced their first trip to Makhachkala, Dagestan, Russia, to present their bilingual collection of poetry, Hammers & Bells, and participate as judges for a youth poetry competition.
“It was amazing to experience the thirst for poetry that people have in Dagestan! Over the course of our presentations, which included 7 schools, as well as participation at the 8th Annual Tarki-Tau Book Fair, we presented the dual-language edition of my collection of poetry, Hammers & Bells (2019) to over 300 people, and, to our great surprise, we were awarded the prestigious Best Book of Poetry Award at the Tarki-Tau Book Fair’s closing ceremonies.”

Like a few other local musicians, rapper Mouraine travelled to the Yukon to participate in the BreakOut West Music Conference.
“Earlier this fall I had the opportunity to travel to BreakOut West/Western Canada Music Awards to attend a workshop that helped develop my career in music. I had the chance to meet and network with music executives in Canada and from around the world. I am grateful for organizations like the EAC who are willing to fund us to travel, and fund us for other projects that help develop and promote the amazing arts culture that Edmonton has to offer.”

Pianist/composer/educator Tom Van Seters and vocalist Chandelle Rimmer had the opportunity to perform original music from their CD Stillness Falls (Bent River Records) at the 2019 edition of L'Off Festival de Jazz de Montreal.
“It was an amazing experience that furthered our professional development and exposed Montrealers to music created by Edmonton-based musicians. We bring what we learn from experiences like these back to Edmonton as they enhance our performances here in immeasurable ways.”

The Fun is Never Ending!
After the Grasslands we traveled to Moose Jaw for a quick fix on our trailer brake at the Panda Tire and a check on the fridge.  As we waited for the trailer to be repaired we had a wonderful Sushi lunch at Aurora’s Restaurant. Then we took in a tour of one of the Moose Jaw tunnels! It was fun to see the actors renact what could have been the truth or not 😄 of Al Capone’s visits to the city back when he was on the run from the law.  The day went by fast and we opted for an overnight stay on the banks of the Moose Jaw river. Very nice campground.
Tumblr media
June 8- We got up early planning to catch up with our friends Karen and Tom…and pup, Cinder 🐕 in Yorkton. I started the day with a quick run while Roy and Arlene got ready and made coffee. 😊 I had a beautiful run up a country road past an incredible B&B and a Seniors home with a view of Moose Jaw. Then it was on to Yorkton where a rendezvous with Tom and Karen found us at Superstore! 😅 Picked up some supplies and gassed up the vehicles before heading out for the Duck Mountains Provincial Park. My old stomping grounds from my Fisheries days in the 80’s. I was looking forward to this return visit. Last time Roy and I were here was on our honeymoon, September 1989.  After a small unplanned turn around on the gravel road into the park😉 we saw the sign welcoming us to the park! So cool to be back here touring our friends around. Watch out Manitoba! 🤣
Tumblr media
Hahaha! Love how the selfie stick makes the writing backwards...or is it us that is backwards? lol!
Tumblr media
We drove straight to Singush Lake. It felt so good to be back here. Of course the campground was empty and I was happy to see a new large and spacious outhouse building plus a bear safe garbage dump and recycling. First thing’s first…set up camp. Arlene decided to set up her tent with a view of the lake. After a celebratory drink of champagne, gin, tonic, splash of elderflower liqueur, mint and cucumber…yes I said champagne and gin!🤣 We then cooked dinner. Bbq’d pork chops, pan fried  potatoes, salad and corn on the cob. It was great to be together and what a feast! 😄 Yes this is roughing it in style like we always do.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We were treated to a incredible view of the moonlit lake with the loons treating us to every  song and call they know. We all missed the most perfect photo opp of the trip so far as we all scrambled for the cameras, when a flock of geese flew past the moon that was shining down upon the lake.😅 Too funny. But we saw it…to share in our travel stories. Lol.  Wow! Like a picture book. It was a splendid night! A great spot for our rendezvous. Us and the mosquitos. Welcome to Manitoba.😁

June 9 - We rose to a beautiful morning and the sound of a Canada Goose family honking and splashing about down by the dock. Then a couple of loons landed in the lake in front of our camp…just after the beaver swam by. Seriously! Tom already had his canoe in the lake and fishing gear being prepped, as we got ready to cook a breakfast of fried mixed vegetables, leftover potato, leftover pork and sausage plus eggs and toast. Yum! Breakfast of champions. 😀

The guys headed out to catch us a feed of walleye or pike which ever bit first. We took Cinder and went for a stroll down the road to find the cabin I lived in while working here. Well, we found it, but it certainly was not in the same condition as when I lived here so many years ago. Even though it was run down, so many great memories came flooding back. It was fun to see it again.  Back at the camp one of the park maintenance guys shows up to finish putting up the fence at the boat launch and signs closing the lake due to a suspected zebra mussel invasion! Well at least the boys got a little fishing in before that happened…even caught a nice pike. But then it was time to scrub the boats down and boil the ropes, sponges and whatever else we could. That is how thorough we had to be. We do not want to give those zebra mussels a free ride anywhere and since we were scrubbing the SS Engagement clean, we might as well polish her up! Thanks Tom for the supplies and coaching! Lol!😅

Happy to see good old Singush Lake.
June 10th - We got up to a somewhat dreary morning at Singush Lake. After a nice breakfast we loaded up to head down the road to Riding Mountain National Park…Clear Lake..just a few hours away. This is where my family took vacations literally every summer. My grandparents had a small cabin there in what is known as the old campgrounds. These small cabins were restricted in size and hauled to your spot every spring and back out again every fall. That has since changed and they now stay. The park also gave permission to the cabin owners to build them a little bigger. My parents bought their own cabin when I was young. It is at the end of the last street with a view of the lake.  The best spot in the campground 😀 We stopped in Dauphin on our way down to pick up supplies. This is where the fisheries office was that I worked for when I was in the Duck Mountains.  The sun broke through the clouds as we continued down the road. First stop was Moon Lake. Such a beautiful lake. Time for a photo opp! 😄 Then on to Wasagaming campground and Clear Lake to get settled in.

My brother Bruce and his wife Dianna, who live in my hometown Brandon, were at the lake as well.  Once we got set up in the campground we got our bikes out androde over to meet my brother at a friend’s campsite. Joe and Calls McDougall. The McDougalls are old family friends from Brandon. We all grew up together. It was wonderful to have a visit with them and to meet their daughter Airlan. Bruce and Joe had their guitars there and we were treated to some good music🎸🎶🎼 Roy and I stayed and had dinner with them all. Karen stopped by later when she took Cinder for a run. It was great sitting around the campfire listening to the guitars.

The next day it was decided we would spent some time doing laundry, so we loaded up packs and whatever we could carry, hopped on our bikes and rode down the street to the laundromat in the village of Wasagaming. Even Cinder had to carry a lite load of laundry😄🐕

As laundry was being done we rode over to The Second Cup owned by a friend of Roy’s Dad. At the laundromat I got talking to the owners and discovered that he grew up in Brandon and actually worked one summer cutting lawns with my brother Bruce at Current Park, near Brandon. Small world. After laundry we took the gang on a biking tour of the area and photo shoot at as many red chairs we could find😅 They are in every National Park this year to Mark Canada’s 150th.

Oops...Cinder! lol!
It was so windy along the lake trail with waves crashing against the shore that Karen compared it to the Seawall in Vancouver!

As part of the tour we stopped in to visit Bruce and Dianna at the spot I grew up coming to every summer.🏡 Then we headed back to the campsite to prepare dinner. Greek night…marinated and then grilled pork pieces with Greek salad…and yes wine of course!😄🥂 Bruce and Dianna rode their bikes over later for a visit. It was a wonderful chat around the campfire.
