Let's talk about the timeline of Episode 8.
At the end of the episode, Ogino hands Kyuu an envelope. The photo within shocks Kyuu:
However, at the time this photo was taken, Rei hadn't even set eyes on his father yet. While Rei was just entering the Suwa residence and reflecting on the three years...
Kazuki was in the supermarket, telling Miri about Rei's 'diabolical dad':
This indicates that Shigeki was keeping tabs on the family even prior to Rei answering his summons: Shigeki was having someone keep watch, take photos and report back. It's possible that he knew a fair deal about Miri and he certainly knew about Kazuki.
However, during the meeting with Rei, Shigeki appears (pretends?) to be only vaguely tuned into his son's living arrangements. "Kurusu Kazuki, was it?" he says, before adding a backhanded compliment:
Their meeting continues. Shigeki brags about the Suwa name before saying:
From Shigeki's perspective, I think he meant this sincerely and, if you think about it, a mob boss allowing his son to abscond for three years, live with two total strangers and fail in his work is... pretty lenient. In Shigeki's eyes, giving Rei 'space' was an act of mercy and kindness — but, ultimately, an investment that would pay off.
Then, Shigeki regrets his 'boon'; he can see from Rei's face that Rei does not want to return to the residence and the old man receives the first clue that his control is slipping. At that point, he expresses anger at the connections Rei has formed — and here, I think there's a distinct possibility that Miri is part of the equation.
In that instance, Rei is undone by the same flaw he usually ascribes to Kazuki. Rei fails to act; he is unable to keep his cool. In a panic, he blurts out:
Rei is afraid because he understands the implications. If Rei has formed useless ties, if he is at risk of showing weakness, then that which prompts Rei's weakness — Kazuki — must be eliminated. Rei believes, here, that Kazuki may go the same way as the dog from Episode 3.
What's interesting, though, is that Rei believes that he and Kazuki have been secretive enough about Miri for her to not even register on Shigeki's radar. In Shigeki's eyes, the fact that Rei didn't mention Miri was probably a huge relief — it suggests that Rei doesn't actually care for the child and she's a side problem that comes with Kurusu.
So I guess my main questions are: just how long were the family under surveillance? And what exactly did Shigeki know about Miri?
Tangent: There was some concern following Episode 11 and the fact that, when Rei pleaded with Shigeki, he only mentioned Miri; however, from Rei's experience, the last time he mentioned Kazuki, Shigeki's murderous intent got more murderous and the surveillance started. It's understandable that Rei tried to use his bargaining powers — the same skills that had somehow got him out of the residence in the first place — to try and save Miri's life. "I'll do anything; I'll kill anyone," said Rei. By that point, unfortunately, he'd already lost too much negotiating power for Shigeki to consider Rei's compromise a viable option and, in any case, Shigeki had already seen that giving Rei leeway led to unnecessary complications.

You’re a really big fan of the Danganronpa series, and Goodbye Despair is, of course, your favourite of the game, if anything can be said from the majority of your fanart. You’ve got the whole thing memorized inside out, every single island, plot-twist, motive, blackened and victim, all mapped out in that little brain of yours.
The thing is: you did not sign up for being in said universe. Nuh-uh. As much as you fucking loved those fics in which the reader is isekai’d into the game, you literally could not see yourself surviving it.
Of course, whatever being that was up above thought it would be hilarious if they did exactly that.

"♪Strumming my pain with his fingers. Singing my life with his words...♫" ("Killing Me Softly with His Song" by Charles Fox & Norman Gimbel) Kyuranger episode 35 tells the story of a young girl, and the music that changed her life...
- Our team is en route towards the Crux System to locate Don Armage's base, when something comes up, causing them to make a detour to Planet Peacock. The Pavo System planet is where #1 gold-skinned Idol of the Universe Hoshi Minato is holding an audition for a talent competition entitled "The Best Artist in the Universe". Think of it as, Kyuranger's version of the Got Talent reality show. Pavo's Got Talent, then? LOL. - You see, there's a valid indication that he might be working with Jark Matter. Specifically Akyanba. A fact brilliantly supported by that Space Ryugu Palace fiasco that until now only felt like a silly, random cross-dressing, throw-away filler. Yes, Minato has been around since the first episode, but this is the first time that he's been given an actual spotlight. Hammy is a fan of Minati (his popular nickname), so she doesn't want to believe this accusation. The only way to confirm it? By inflitrating the Pavo Broadcasting Station! - Idol Hammy gets to be front and center, disguising as a singing unit Triple Q with Red-haired Lucky and Yellow-haired Naga. Tsurugi is their pim... er, I mean producer (seriously dude, what's with that furry scarf?), while Spada is acting as his sassy four-eyed assistant. Daang, they look sooo different and flashy in these casual clothes. It's both weird and fun at the same time. If only we get to see more costume change in their dailies. Hammy in particular, looks so much better with her hair down like this. Fun fact: 'Q' is pronounced 'Kyuu' in Japanese, and we all know that 'Kyuu' means 'Nine'. Not so subtle, right? - As much as Hammy tries to defend Minati, things aren't looking good against him. More evidence proving that he's consciously in cahoots with Jark Matter continues to line up. To deal with this, Commander Xiao instructs them to use the #60 Eridanus Kyu Globe. It has a unique ability to wipe away illusion, unveiling the truth about someone. Which means, if Minato is indeed a mere disguise, the true face behind him mask can be shown. Trivia: Eridanus Constellation is obviously based on Eridanos, a mythological as well as actual river that existed in ancient Greek era. There are various differing stories about this river in the mythology. One source called it to be the River King, while others used it as one of the River of Hades after it became hidden from the face of earth. Strangely, there was no record of it being connected to 'revealing illusion', so the writers are taking creative liberties here. Perhaps, the story of Narcissus was used as reference for this ability? - Why does Hammy feel very emotional about Minati? Well, that's where we get to the best part of this episode. More of Hammy's backstory, and more sweet bonding moment between her and Naga! We've seen Hammy's childhood as a ninja girl in-training before, but what we never know, is that she actually escaped from her planet sometime after that! She then wandered off from one planet to another, until she encountered Minati on Planet Zakise of the Reticulum System. - He was just an aspiring street performer back then, without any single audience listening to his song. But this sincere and intimate performance managed to touch Hammy's empty heart. Like a reenaction of the lyrics of "Killing Me Softly with His Song", she felt like the song was singing about her. It gave her hope and strength to go on, and push forward. Suffice to say, Minati inspired her to become a Kyuranger! That's why she refuses to believe that Minati has become evil. Even better, her story resonates with Naga's personal quest for true emotion. It's nice of the other three Kyurangers to just listen silently from behind closed doors, allowing Hammy and Naga to have their moment. - Performance time! Minato serves as the only judge, so Hammy decides to sing "Wholeheartedly". That's the very song that touched her heart. Guess what? She CAN indeed sing. I actually like her version A LOT better than Minato's. What about Naga and Lucky? K-Pop style Background dancers. LOL. But hold on, how come Minati doesn't recognize the song? Has he stoop that low after gaining popularity? - Apparently NOT. Thanks to Balance and Raptor who had secretly disguised themselves as animal mascots (monkey and rabbit respectively), Hammy and Naga get to use Eridanus and expose the truth. Minati's grumpy manager is in fact Akyanba, while Minati is... Minati. HUH? Hold on, that creepy puppet hanging on his shoulder? It's... actually Don Armage. Hiding in plain sight alongside a popular pop star? That's what I call a clever disguise. This proves that Minati has indeed been under control. Not by Akyanba, but by the Jark Matter Shogun himself! - Parallel battles immediately take place. Gigant Phoenix and Orion Battler deals with giant Don Armage (an amazing homage to Tsurugi and Orion's final battle in the past), while Ophiucus Metal leads the others to defeat Akyanba. This might sound weird, but I actually feel sorry seeing Akyanba being ganged-down like this. Is this the last we see of her though? Judging from the case of Kukuruga, I doubt it. As for Don Armage, if the present day's Shogun has been encountered and actually destroyed using Orion Cannon, does this mean we just had an early final episode of Kyuranger? Of course that's not the case, since there's still 13 more episodes ahead of this. Still an ample time for a quick focus episode or two. So what's the deal with Armage, then? - The answer is... he's a LEGION. This Don Armage is an entirely different being than the one defeated in the past, but even this one reveals that he is NOT the only one. I honestly didn't see this coming. Does this mean every part of him must be eliminated at the same time? That's going to be tricky challenge. This reveal helps clears out one thing though: neither of the names I've suspected like Kuervo or Prof. Anton is his true face. Armage is Armage, that's all there is. Hmmmm... somehow, I can't help but remember of the Kree Supreme Intelligence from Marvel Comics, or the Chitauri and/or Ego the Living Planet from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Could Armage be using a similar concept, having a central brain stored somewhere out there, acting as leader of a hive mind? This practically allows him to generate life as many as he likes, as proven by the Vice-Shogun coming back to life over and over again. I just hope he's not something more akin to Master Genis in "Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger". Rehashing the same concept so early would not be wise. Here's hoping we'll get more specific explanation very soon... - For now, Minato has been released from Jark Matter's influence. So he's back to the Minati that Hammy knew and loves. Many fans have been voicing loud opinions when the possibility of him becoming the true big bad was brought up, so I'm glad the show proves that is NOT the case. Of course, he WAS Don Armage, but at the same time, not entirely. The Shogun was just using his body, that's all. LOL. Eventhough we don't get to see a Raptor and Hammy idol combi, all's well ends well. Will their next detou... er, adventure fare the same? We'll see...
Overall: I just love how this show keeps on surprising audience. Giving what they've already suspected, but also... not really. The latest Televi Magazine coverage sort of teased that Minato might be the mastermind behind Don Armage, but now we all knew better. That was merely a giant red herring, for the truth about Don Armage was completely different. Important reveal has not been spoiled in advance! It's also a long-awaited Hammy focus episode (just in time for her actress' personal announcement). I was honestly worried when the preview teased the only female human being shoved into the annual Idol trope, but it was executed sooo much better than I expected because we got to see more of her backstory. And tying up her past with both Minato and Naga's personal arc? Who would've thought that Hammy used to be like Naga, right? That's a fantastic way to build connection between members. If there's one minor quip I had about this episode, it's how the non-away team were... completely forgotten in the 2nd half. We didn't even get to the others inside Battle Orion Ship, eventhough it utilized the Orion Cannon. Still, I'll let that slide, because the entire episode, including the newly-shot (not footage from previous episodes) flashback, didn't take place on Earth! We're back to planet-hopping, wonderful world building now. So yeah, it had its flaws, but a good episode nonetheless. Next week: Home sweet home... for Lucky! PS: - Remember that old report? It seems V-Cinema "Episode of Stinger" and its coupling web-series "High School Wars" (HSW), do take place some time before/after this episode. I initially thought 'after', since we see Minato giving a certain Kyu Globe to the team in "HSW" 2nd episode (indicating he's no longer under Don Armage's control). Then again, he still has that alien puppet on his shoulder, hinting that the time setting might be... 'before'. Continuity issue? Anyways, my point is, if you've already purchased your Bluray copy, or has been itching to watch either one (TV-Nihon has already released all 4 episodes of "HSW"), you're pretty much free to go now. - Speaking of "HSW", there's an additional 5th episode featuring Kotarou as the lead. It will be a DVD exclusive only. This one most likely takes place in parallel with "Episode of Stinger", because neither Stinger and Champ are present in the preview. Not to worry though, this bonus episode will have special guest stars filling in their place. Who could they be? Beats me... LOL.
Episode 35 Score: 8 out of 10
