         A thin thread of viscous fluid dripped from the great beast’s jaws as she sniffed the air. Though she had fed well over the last few days, the scent of fresh meat never failed to entice her into action. Even if she did not manage to consume whatever hapless herbivore happened to be nearby entirely, the Queen’s abhorred entourage of scavengers -- packs of smaller predators who were only too happy to gnaw at their queen’s leftovers -- would soon pick the carcass clean.

         The Tyrannosaur’s nostrils flared as she sought to pinpoint the source of her prey’s scent, great huffs of air escaping from her lungs with each exhale. Her prey was close, she could tell. Its scent lay thick and heavy in the air, an irresistible invitation to a hungry Tyrannosaur, even one who was far some feeling the all-too-familiar pangs of starvation.

          The beast plodded forward, her snout still pointed squarely towards the source of the scent, ready and eager to bury itself in the body of some unlucky leaf-eater.

“Yeah! Three-horns don’t play with long-necks!”

She hardly cared that her father had given her a very impatient look before he lay down to sleep, or that she was causing a racket that wasn’t doing her many favours with anyone else either. After the encounter earlier, Cera was feeling more convinced than ever of her kind’s superiority.

She’d wandered only a small way away when she’d crested a ridge in the ground and stumbled upon the long-neck family. Cera couldn’t see the young one who’d laughed at her earlier; but he had to be there somewhere.

And, to be frank, she wanted to gloat some more.

“And they’re better than long-necks too! Come up here and I’ll prove it! Come on!”

It escaped her entirely that her yelling might attract, not Littlefoot, but one of the much larger specimens instead.
