Gujarati (Kutch) Speciality

Yes, this region is perhaps the least appealing in terms of climate, and it is certainly the least populated. It is well and truly off the beaten path. The various communities, such as Rabaris, Ahirs, and Meghwals, each have a distinct dress that is still an integral part of daily life, and each practice a specific craft, which is fostered and promoted by a number of co-operatives and non-governmental organizations. Kachchh offers some fascinating opportunities for adventurous, life-affirming travel for the adventurous traveler willing to forego such luxuries as hot showers and reliable bus schedules.

About Kachchh: The great and little Ranns, which flood seasonally, surround Kachchh. The Gulf of Kachchh, a large inlet of the Arabian Sea to the south, has a marine national park and sanctuary with 42 islands and a variety of reefs, mudflats, coastal salt marsh, and India’s largest area of mangrove swamps.

The Kachchh Peninsula is relatively high, with a thin layer of volcanic lava covering the often saline soil. There is little natural surface water on the dry and rocky terrain, but there are numerous artificial tanks and reservoirs. Intensive grazing has prevented the development of the rice vegetation typical of neighboring Sindh in Pakistan, and there is only sparse woodland along the frequently dry river beds. Some of the lakes serve as important wintering grounds for migratory birds such as pelicans and cormorants. In the north, the Rann of Kachchh disappears into the Thar desert.

The saltwater of the Gulf of Kachchh invades the Rann in June, and the Rajasthan River pours freshwater into it. It then transforms into an inland sea. Kachchh effectively becomes an island. When migratory Flamingos arrive near Khavda in December and February, they spend the winter on the Great Rann. Sand grouse, pelicans, and avocets are also present.

When the monsoons flooded vast areas of Kachchh, farming was forced to be abandoned, and handicrafts flourished, not only expressing artistic skills but also providing a means of subsistence. There is mirror work, Kachchh appliqué and embroidery with beads, gold and silver jewelry, gilding enameling, and colorful wool felt namda rugs.

Best Of Time: The best time to visit is between late October and mid-March. If the Rann of Kachchh and the desert wildlife sanctuary of the Great Rann were not separated by a road, they would form India’s largest contiguous tract of protected wildlife territory. The Rann is mostly a saline wilderness, broken up by belts of grass, bushes, acacia, and thorn scrub that form islands during the monsoon. The salt works, which clear the vegetation, release toxic effluents into the wetlands, and pollute the air, pose a serious threat to the area. Prosopis juliflora, a fast-growing thorn scrub, is destroying most other vegetation.

Gujarat has a very unique biodiversity ecosystem known as the Rann. This region consists of The Rann (Salt Marshes ecosystem), Greater Rann of Kachchh (GRK) and Little Rann of Kachchh (LRK).

Unfortunately, the Rann ecosystem of Gujarat is often overlooked. Moreover, these ecosystems are characterized by saline marshes, deserts and other extreme environmental conditions. Yet beneath the seemingly lifeless landscape lies an amazing treasure of unique and fascinating species that have adapted to the harsh conditions of this saline ecosystem. Therefore, let’s explore the rich biodiversity of Kutch’s salt marshes and the importance of protecting this fragile environment.

Migratory Flamingo and other birds

One of the most notable species found in Kutch’s salt marshes is the flamingo. Spotting these birds is a spectacle, with thousands of them flocking to this area during the winter months to breed & feed. The salt marshes provide an ideal habitat for these birds. This is because they are rich in the small crustaceans and algae that form the flamingos’ primary food source.

Moreover, the region is also home to a diverse array of wading birds like sandpipers, plovers and herons. These birds have adapted to the saline environment by developing specialized salt glands. Specifically, these enable them to excrete excess salt & maintain their internal water balance. The Rann is also home to various species of bustards.

What is the vegetation found in the Rann?

The vegetation in the Rann ecosystem is also unique and diverse. The GRK has a mangrove belt that includes species such as Avicennia marina and Aegiceras corniculatum. The salt-tolerant vegetation in the Rann includes species such as Salvadora oleoides, Prosopis juliflora, and Tamarix aphylla. The LRK has a large number of Prosopis juliflora trees, which provide shelter and food for several species of birds and animals. Unfortunately, various poorly planned plantation drives have led to the spread of invasive flora.

Aquatic Animals

One of the most unique & fascinating semi aquatic animal here is the mudskipper — a fish that has adapted to life on land. This fish is a strange-looking creature which is able to breathe air through the skin and can move around on land using the pectoral fins. The fiddler crab is another interesting animal found here. These crabs are small colorful crabs with oversized claw on one side of their body. They use them for communication, attracting mates and defending their territory. Fiddler crabs are highly adapted to life in the intertidal zone where they feed on algae & detritus and bury themselves in the mud to avoid predators.

Threat to the salt marshes of Rann

Despite the rich biodiversity of these salt marshes, this fragile ecosystem is under severe threat, majorly from a variety of human activities. One of the biggest threats is the extraction of salt from these marshes. It can disrupt the delicate balance of the ecosystem & destroy the habitats of many wonderful species. Pollution and habitat destruction from human settlements and industries are also major threats to the ecosystem.

These days, the abandoned 16th century Mughal capital of Fatehpur Sikri near Agra is overrun by touts. A lesser-known, short-lived, capital that's also a UNESCO World Heritage site is Champaner-Pavagadh, situated about 90 miles (145 kilometers) southeast of Ahmedabad. Notably, it's the only unaltered and complete Islamic pre-Mughal city in India. Osian is perfect for those who want to avoid the commercial desert tourism in Jaisalmer and have a peaceful camel safari experience. Intricately carved stone temples, dating from the 8th to 11th centuries when Osian was an important trading center, are an added attraction. The small town of Kannur, in northern Kerala, is known for its secluded beaches, mysterious masked spirit-possession theyyam rituals, and hand loom weaving. There are some delightful, laid back (and inexpensive) beach houses in the Thottada beach area, such as Kannur Beach House, Waves Beach Resort, Chera Rock Beach House, and KK Heritage Homestay. Bhoramdeo Jungle Retreat is a few hours drive away and has three atmospheric cottages nestled in the Maikal Hills, close to the ancient Bhoramdeo temple complex. The owner is a native of the area and has an excellent rapport with the indigenous villagers, who belong to the Baiga and Gond tribes. Manali in Himachal Pradesh attracts plenty of adventure seekers, who come to enjoy its surrounding village trekking trails. However, to go where very few tourists have gone before, head to Kalap, 7,500 feet above sea level in the upper Garhwal region of northern Uttarakhand. This tiny village is not accessible by road or rail (you'll need to trek, and porters and mules are provided). A responsible tourism project was started there in 2013 to help the villagers generate an income. You can stay with them and experience their way of life, as well as spend time in the pristine surroundings.

Nagarhole National Park is one of the top national parks in India. It gets its name from the snake-like river that winds its way through it. Alternatively, Pollachi in the Coimbatore district of Tamil Nadu is an unexplored place teaming with wildlife, plus Anamalai Tiger Reserve is in the area. The annual Kongu Nadu Cattle Festival, held in January, is also a highlight. Golconda Fort near Hyderabad is one of the top forts in India. However, about seven hours south of the city are the ruins of another fort that hardly anyone is familiar with, despite the fact that it was possessed by many powerful rulers including the Chalukyas, Pemmasani Nayaks, Golconda Sultanate, Mughals (under Aurangzeb), and the British. Gandikota is a fort on a gorge in the Kadapa district of Andhra Pradesh. The gorge is often referred to as the Grand Canyon of India. It's possible to kayak along the Penna River, hike along the gorge, and enjoy spectacular star-lit nights and sunrises over the canyon. Accommodations are limited in the area. If you don't want to stay at the Haritha hotel run by Andhra Pradesh Tourism or camp by the canyon, Royal County is the best option although it's an hour from Gandikota.
