▍ note: kaede's story is primarily set in a modern day/urban fantasy universe but she can easily be adapted into more high fantasy settings or period verses. i love exploring her in different historical contexts and genres so if you want to thread please don't feel limited by that when it comes to plotting 💗

⇲ HISTORY

THE NEXT VESSEL OF THE FOX GOD INARI was born in kyoto, japan to miyagawa noriko and kang ga-eul. a widely disputed birth as the child of this union would be unifying two very different bloodlines of foxes. the miyagawa kitsune, which date back to before the heian period and the kang gumiho which have only just begun being active in the past two centuries. the kang family began as fox-possessed individuals that eventually became full gumiho. the miyagawa dynasty is composed of direct descendants of inari herself, they view newer foxes as thin-blooded and less potent than god-touched.

noriko and ga-eul were wedded in secret and their daughter also was wrapped in a cloak mystery. even so, both fox families became aware of her presence since noriko's hold over inari began to wane with the presence of a new vessel coming into fruition. no longer able to mask their presence, kitsune and gumiho alike began to appear to leer and intimidate the family. the pair eventually decided to flee to the u.s. to avoid a confrontation with their respective families. this was how kaede came to be brought up in the bay area, california; aware of her heritage and the mantle she was expected to take on but unaware of the threat of her mother's dwindling power.

the fox remains dormant until released by ritual, thus kaede has a fairly normal upbringing until she enters university. the kami's essence begins its flow into her, sensing her mother's time running out. being that inari is a deity tied to the land this wavering is felt especially in kyoto. oni come in all shapes and form to locate noriko and bring her back to the destitute landscape left behind. though, they are drawn in by kaede's essence instead, her fox spirit having eclipsed that of her mother's. in order to defend herself her first blade manifests, kogitsune. once unsheathed the beast is awakened and inari leaves its previous host empty to enter kaede and assist her in the fight.

⇲ PRESENT

THERE CAN NEVER BE TWO. . . in the wake of her mother's death, kaede returns to the miyagawa ancestral home in kyoto to drive back the gathering yokai forces. almost immediately her presence begins to ease the land back into its former shape. while the local spirits are gladdened by her return, the foxes who had initially driven her family away have been waiting for a chance to steal her birthright. her powers begin to awaken gradually and her training begins with necessary pilgrimage.

she travels from shrine to shrine. reawakening forests or restoring spirits to ones which have been abandoned by their former yokai. the inari kami is a transient figure; the embodiment of autumn and when she goes she takes the season with her but leaves bounty behind her. the time she spends in each of these woods varies from weeks to even years. she often takes on the role of a miko during her travels and helps with the chores if there are grounds to tend to. the mortals around her seldom recognize her for what she truly is… and her face is forgotten the moment she departs to her next location.

eventually she does reintegrate into human society but it is on the fringes. in the form of an antique shop, which she owns as a front for safeguarding magical weapons and tools from the hands of those that may abuse their power. awakening the inari has given her heightened senses ill-equipped for the cacophony of modern life on average. that being said, it is her gumiho aspect that craves social interaction and the company of humans. there is quite a lot of internal strife she faces between the conflicting needs of the two foxes she houses. this conflict manifests itself outwardly as well as she begins to have run-ins with her trickster spirit half-siblings who try to appeal to her natural desire for mischief. she is led astray multiple times throughout her life but always wanders back to the path of renewal.

⇲ ABILITIES

embodiment of autumn: inari is an interesting deity as she has taken on many forms and aspects since her conception. it is said each kitsune who houses her highlights a different shade of her godly sovereignty. for kaede inari is a renewal goddess, a harvest goddess, a lady of abundance. for her mother, noriko, she was a god of commerce and ruled by precious metals.

ecological empathy: kaede is directly tied to the land. depending on how long she inhabits a wood her connection only gets stronger with that particular forest/environment. this means she can sense all the wild life and coax the natural environment how she sees fit.

zoolinguism: this goes hand in hand with her eco-empathy. she can communicate directly with animals considering many spirits take on the appearance of beasts and mythic creatures alike.

aki no mori ( the forest of ever-autumn): this is like… a stage 5 skill and is not a feat possible for her right after awakening her godly aspect BUT aki no mori is the inari's domain. it is a liminal space, a pocket dimension if you will that is a waystation for spirits and yokai under the inari's domain. this is where the fox goes to heal and recharge after battle. it is space between life and death and the border is not breached unless the kami allows it.

famine: what the goddess gives the goddess can also take away. this ability is typically classified as a curse but she can make a land barren. this is not an ability she takes lightly and is usually only employed to punish spirits that have wronged her. many spirits are directly tied to a physical coil, be it a lake, or a mountain. kaede can poison the very essence of these places and in many ways this is more excruciating death than a mortal wound.

swordmandship: in her lifetime kaede will wield nine different blades which are representative of her nine-tails. she will endure a trial for each and some will even be forged by her own hand. the inari is the guardian of swordsmiths and that is why they are her weapon of choice. not every sword will be a katana some may even be tantou or daggers and she takes a fondness to a korean jikado sword at some point.

⇲ KITSUNE/ GUMIHO TRAITS

shapeshifting: becoming a full fox is a rarity. both gumiho and kitsune are very protective of their true forms. seeing their actual face is associated with stealing their power. they also will wear thousands of different human faces throughout their lifetime and seldom are seen in the same form twice by mortals. in kaede's case she is more grounded in humanity and does have a human face she is partial to… but it is unsure if it is her "true" face.

obfuscation: related to this lack of a "true" face it is difficult to look directly in the face of the goddess. kaede's features are constantly shifting and are always changing to the slightest degree that can cause a sense of vertigo if one stares for too long. she will wear a kitsune mask at times for ease when she doesn't want to focus her energy on keeping her face from shifting.

yeowoo guseul (the fox marble/bead): the fox marble… is a kiss of death in a way. the fox marble is said to house a gumiho's divine knowledge. they can gift this knowledge to mortals through a kiss, they exchange the marble back and forth and if it human swallows it they absorb some of the gumiho's essence. legends have said if a fox bead is housed in a mortal long enough the gumiho will become human. since kaede is no regular gumiho and comes from a kitsune lineage she will not become human even if she gives her marble away. instead she will weaken depending on who she chooses as a host… and that host does not necessarily have to be human.

divine allure: the fox is a charmer. a seducer, and an excellent manipulator of emotion. extremely convincing liars it is almost impossible to know when the truth is being told or not when in her presence. kaede herself does not employ tactics of seduction often but whether or not flirting is her intention, foxes have a supernatural allure to them. they draw you in, they are captivating creatures because it is impossible to ignore their vulpine features even when they are playing at human. there is something off about them and this entices rather than repels.

Lycanthrope, Weredeinonychus

[Another one where I thought that finding a good piece of art would be easy, and it turned out to be more of a challenge than I expected. ”Raptors” are a popular topic of fursonas (feather-sonas?), but most of them are just full-fledged dinosaurs, as opposed to having many humanoid traits. And most of the more anthropomorphic ones are scaly Jurassic Park style rather than feathered. That being said, the flavor text of my lycanthrope here is very clearly indebted to the Jurassic Park version of the “velociraptor” rather than actual paleontology.]

Lycanthrope, Weredeinonychus CR 4 LE Humanoid (shapechanger) This lithe humanoid has a thin tail, feathered skin and oversized claws on her feet.

Weredeinonychus are cruel lycanthropes obsessed with the hunt and with proving their prowess. They often hunt in mixed packs with true deinonychus, and are masters of ambush. They know their hunting grounds well, and make use of terrain features to separate and confuse prey before striking. If outnumbered or injured, they fade back into the landscape, but may track enemies over some distance to take revenge when they are sleeping or distracted.

Weredeinonychus believe that the strong should dominate the weak. They are temperamental and combative, but know the benefits of biding their time and taking revenge at the right moment. Although they are most comfortable in tropical forests or warm plains, a weredeinonychus can also make itself right at home in the urban jungle, preying on those that won’t be missed or making a living as an elite bounty hunter or assassin. They are matriarchal among themselves. In their humanoid forms, weredeinonychus are typically lean and lightweight. They may tilt their heads from side to side when assessing a situation, jump more frequently than most people, or hold their hands folded along the length of their arms.

Upon her lithe, thin-framed body -- like a silhouette-beam of the moon -- the mermaid was clothed in pure white cotton and washed silk: a gown so sheerly skintight the tiny buds of her skinny breats shone like unoped rose sepals misty in the night-air with the enlacing wind shimmering translucent. Or, so it was written, this fable of sorrow, this tale probably as hollow as the soul of the fairy, or so she thought to herself as she waiting patiently amidst the cold rocks and the old fern. The tiny hands on the delicate wrist-watch turned to 2 A.M., the fourth of December. the curls of the fairy's long black hair swirled in the gentle night-wind and waved in the air like circles of chimney-smoke from old New England Life calendars -- visual expressions of quaint, innocent, Grace-given days when moms and dads made homemade pies and mended basketball nets tattered from neighborhood kids playing in old alleys once made for the garbage trucks to pass through. Her eyes' irises shined incandescently like a pair of rainbows in a Buckeye June when after a gladfelt rain the sun beams, oh so, merrily. Sadly, the fairy stood leaning against the limestone and wood, her narrow, bare feet cleansed by the rime and ruth of the sea and the sand and the marrow of the fern, dancing in the shallow water like tinsel hallowed upon Christmas Eve. Then, the alluring, beautiful mermaid, this vision of loveliness undefinable, began to walk along the sand reaching into unseen pockets, her seeds of "forget-me-not" wildflowers she tenderly tossed into the misty air to fall softly, faintly onto the shining sand. At first, the fairy thought to run towards her, for ahe moved as swiftly as Peggy Fleming on ice but she decided to wait a little longer, still holding gingerly the delicate wrist=watch in her, now, quivering hand. Suddenly, the scintillating mermaid turned around, her pencil-thin silhouette askance of the sea. She seemed to to glance uncertain, yet, unnerved to where the fairy stood hidden in the shadow of the fern-hewn stones. The fairy bowed low, kneeling behind the time-glossed rock, afraid the mermaid had seen her unsolicited, trespassing watch. The tall, spindle-framed mermaid, then, quietly turned around again, letting the "forget-me-not" seeds fall here, there, and anywhere, even into the ruth of the sea. Now, more confidently and courageously the fairy left her hiding-place to begin to soundlessly follow the enchanting mermaid, now, far down the undulating line of the sea and sand, its moving edge an outline of curves and waves as immeasuarble and certain as the wind and flight of two raven-black sandpipers now floating their own weaving pattern just above the swift stride of the mermaid disappearing, then, re-appearing in the misty threads of the moonlit night and its light gleaming grandly upon this sandscape of pure beauty, grace, solemnity, and tranquility as if borrowed from a "Blue Marvel" mesmerizing scene from its "Sunrise Earth." Softly, then, lifting quickly her bare, vein-woven feet in the white, wet sand, the fairy grew afraid she had missed her chance to give her gift and, even, perhaps to touch tenderly the ring-threaded, fragile fingertips of the mermaid, who like the silence of a church-bell yet to ring its beckoning sound seemed to be waiting for some unknown, unseen cue. For a moment the mist enshrouded the beautiful mermaid's ethereal vision, then, open like a magical theatre curtain to show the leading actress move like a gamine-like fair lady in effortless movement: the dream of the far-away spotlight to illuminate her lovely vision more clearly. Strangely, to the fairy, while her footprints made indelible marks in the sand, even when the sea=waves brushed tenderly its water over them, there were no footprints left behind to mark the passive passage of the seductive siren as she made her way along the beach. So, the loving fairy hurried her steps, longing to meet, to speak to the entrancing mermaid growing smaller, more invisible in the unlessened distance. At last, the anxious, breathless fairy was within, perhaps, thirty feet of the ision-beautiful mermaid. her long, skintight slipdress seemed to even more enchantingly, entrancingly, more defining the lovely outline of her ribs and collarbone as visible as a crossing delicate, slender vine on a trellis of wildflowers: her tiny, thin curves of her breasts, pale pink as two tulips blossoming in the Olympia Mountains. Her face was more beautiful than any face the fairy had ever seen. It shone brighter than the moon, her cheekbones sculpted as an angel who guards the oldest cenetery in France, divinely chiseled by an enwrapt artist. Her nose and lips glistened like bluebells in the mist pastoral, peaceful meadowed vale. Her eyes gleamed more blue than the most serene September sky when the mist of Dawn hovers majestically above a hallowed landscape made only for tiny flowers and the gentle, demure deer. The fairy stood transfixed, the sea-waves brushing continually across her pale feet mixing with the sand creating velvet-like slippers upon her weary ankles. The wind upon the sandscape uplift in the moon-lit, star-drift night, seemed to the enwrapped, enlaced fairy more comforting than the softest hand-made, hand-woven quilt of he blessed Appalachian antiquity. The mystified, loving fairy reached out her long, thin, pale arms and her hands trenbling, still clutching the delicate wristwatch she wished to give to the angelic, siren-like mermaid, now as corporeal as she. The only sounds were the soft rush of the waves, the tender, weaving wind, and the whispering song of the sandpipers still hovering nearly invisible, like opaque raindrops upon a window, above the mermaid's lovely, enlacing, silhouette beautiful in the ascending night. Without saying a word, like Marion Davies in a 1920's silent film the mermaid smiled joyously, freely, lovingly as if she somehow knew why the awkward, wayward fairy was there, as if she were her forever-friend. Apprehensively but reverently the fairy took a little step forward, her hand which cradled the wrist-watch opened like a wood-lily softly, finally opening its sepals to the glory of Dawn. With her beautiful, scintillating face lightly adorned with pastel drops of tiny shells and forget-me-not petals, she delicately dipped downward her profile, her tender eyes glancing at the sand. Then, above her, the sandpipers called like a tympany at the climax of a symphony and the mermaid disappeared in a soft flash of light, like a spotlight suddenly turned on, then, just as suddenly turned off. There was no sign of the lovely mermaid. She had vanished like a wisp in the night, like the breath of a kiss in a dream awakened. The anguished fairy moved to where the vision-beautiful mermaid had just stood and she, too, looked down sadly, her heart filled with sorrow, a little ashamed at her self-boldness. Yet, upon the sand lay a long, white feather: one which had fallen unnoticedly from the mermaid's graceful wings which has opened right before she disappeared with the sandpipers. And beneath the feather etched in the sand, drawn in longhand was her message to her faithful fairy follower -- "Truthfully, I thank you for the lovely, delicate wrist-watch but our time, our love is eternal." The fairy fell upon her knobby knees beside the mermaid's message. She tenderly took the feather into her trembling hands and to her gleeful, blissful lips she kissed the feather softly. The waves of the sea swept across the mermaid's words beginning to wash them away. The wind gingerly brushed her eyes, her tears of jubilation, like a mother's loving devotion to her once-lonely daughter, like Annie Sullivan wistfully wiping the tears form Helen Keller's joyful, esctatic eyes for now she could see, she could hear, she could talk. And the moon brightened this place with a fabled kind of grace written only in a fairy-tale for the orphans of the stormy seas, their longing dreams of glee, like a magical miracle, at long last, made real.

Julia Stoschek Collection - Berlin Reflection

Bill Viola - The Reflecting Pool The editing of the footage is interesting where the man’s movement is frozen while the rest of the image continues to move normally.

Isaac Julien – True North -I like how the installation is set up to encourage the audience to relax and have the option of soft cushion seats. -While there are 3 channels, they aren’t always playing simultaneously. Sometimes one screen is blank allowing you to focus on the other screens.

Anicka Yi – Escape from the shade While this is a sculptural piece I am interested in how the electrical leads are openly presented as part of the install. I am open to attempting this appearance for my own work. - The Flavor Genome Narrative described as; ‘The voice of the narrator takes the form of a laboratory diary of scientific log book. The tone is not a dispassionate academic one but if epic and, over the course of the narrative, exhibits increasingly hallucinatory traits.’ (Anke Volkmer) I am considering the use of narration in my own video installation and I am interested in this tone of voice as it is described as ‘hullucinatory’ which is something that could lend well to the visual quality of my work. Heike Baranowsky – Gras This video piece is essentially slowed down footage of a close-up view of grass. The approach to filming and editing causes the grass to be very graceful in its presence. ‘the grass undulates a lithe, almost hypnotic motion, never allowing itself to come completely in focus. In other words, our gaze does not by any means capture or analyze, but it rather disorientated and sways us into a mediative trance by following the irregular rhythm of the grass.’ (Dr Emmanuel Mir) This description of Gras really resonates with how I would like my work to be considered. The effect of disorientation and entrancement of the viewer fascinates me.

Guan Xiao – Weather Forecast Like ‘True North’ this is a 3 channel video piece and the screens do no always play simultaneously, again allowing the viewer to focus on the screen/screens left playing. These screens are a lot smaller, TV size. I feel that this captures the viewer attention in a different way than the immersive larger screens they are often presented with. I am also interested in the mixture of both music and ‘Xiao’s disembodied voice off screen’ (Lena Katherina Reuter) Nancy Holt and Robert Smithson – Swamp Out of context, based of what I see visually, I consider there to be a correlation between this video piece and my own work in the sense that it is essentially about observation. Observing the natural surroundings. I also enjoy this video in context, It is an interesting and innovative (at the time) approach to the use of film in capturing the natural landscape. ‘As the reeds crash against the camera lends blocking vision and forming continuously shifting patterns, confusions ensues’ The idea of creating shifting patterns and confusion with the use of filming is what intrigues me. Paul Pfeiffer – Empire The lack of narrative in this video piece lets the video do all of the “talking”. I am also intrigued by the presentation set up – projector set on top of a box with electrical cords visible to the viewers. Cyprien Gaillard – Koe This film piece is the most relative to my own work currently. ‘In his oeuvre Cyprien Gaillard investigates the genesis and decay of architecture, artefacts and landscapes. He is interested in the kind of locations that society has appropriated or nature has reclaimed. This changes the original meaning and function of such locations, giving rise to the aesthetics of decay, of ruin or of naturalness. Gaillard’s works address utopias against the background of urban habitats, albeit always with one eye on the reality of the present. Gaillard’s praxis includes not only videos and film, but also installations and photography.’ ( Anna-Alexandra Pfau)
