How to Piss off Happy Hogan Step 2
Also found on Ao3
Step 1 found here
Thor shows up at the lake house, shaking the very foundation it stands on. Morgan actually squeaks and for a moment Peter doesn’t know if he wants to laugh at her. Happy fixes his dilemma for him, pointing to the front door
“Hey SuperHero, how about you go make sure we’re not under attack? I’ll keep an eye on the squirt.”
“Happy, really, Squirt?” Morgan protests.
Peter pushes the small Spider carrying his nanosuit as Happy shrugs, “Sorry kid, just because you’re nearly in the double digits doesn’t mean you lose the nicknames.”
Peter’s pulling open the door and hears Morgan say “It should.” before a large muscular arm wraps around his shoulders.
“Man- Spider!”
Peter jumps. Really high. In fact he’s now stuck to the top of the porch as he stares upside down at….
“Thor?”
Thor spreads his arms out, “Yes! Who else did you expect?”
Peter slowly manages to come down from the ceiling, dropping to his feet silently, “Literally anyone else. We haven’t seen you since…”
Thor’s hand lands on Peter's shoulder and he squeezes. Hard. Peter almost winces.
“Since we defeated Thanos and your father passed away?”
“He’s not, I mean, it wasn’t... I.” Sighing, Peter retracts the nanosuit and rubs his face, “Yes, since then.”
Thor stares silently at him for a moment, “Are you still sad? It has been many years.”
“I’m okay.” Peter waves off Thor’s concern, “I mean, yes, of course it still makes me sad but it’s just a …” Peter rubs at his chest, “just a constant ache I’ve learned to live with. Like all the others.”
“Aw. I, too, become sad when I think of my fathers death. My mothers as well.”
Peter hums, glancing back into the house as he hears Happy ask, “Well, Kid, are we under attack or not?”
Glancing back to Thor, he motions to the house, “Would you like to come in? Pepper is away on business but Happy and Morgan are here.”
“Oh hell no!” Happy shouts when Thor finally gets to the reason for his visit.
Peter jerks his head to him, “Happy!”
“What?” Happy says, “You think I’m going to actually approve of you going off WORLD, of all things?”
Peter studies him for a long moment and Happy doesn’t cower from his gaze. Not that he expects him to, Happy has held his own with Tony Stark during his worst, a twenty-two year old kid isn’t going to intimidate him.
“Happy, you know you really have no say in this, right?” Peter says cautiously.
“Well, is he your boss?” Thor asks.
“Yes.”
“No.” Peter clenches his teeth together, “Happy, stop.”
Thankfully Morgan chooses that very moment to drop something in the kitchen. They all hear the shatter and Morgan shouting, “I’m fine.” But it’s still a heartbeat before anyone moves, which is surprising for both Happy and Peter. They’re both a little overbearing when it comes to Morgan.
Happy sighs and turns to the kitchen, calling out in a much more gentle voice than the one he was using on Peter just moments ago, “Hold on Squirt, don’t touch anything.”
Peter calls May to give her a heads up. He doesn’t often call her before a mission but it’s not everyday he goes off world.
“And what does Happy think of all of this?” She asks before they finish their call.
Peter ducks his head and rubs the back of his neck, May gives a quiet laugh, “Thought so. Do you need me to talk to him?”
“Aunt May, I’m twenty-two and an Avenger, I think I can handle Happy.”
“That wasn’t a no.”
Peter shakes his head, “You know, maybe it wouldn’t hurt. If you don’t mind.”
“I don’t. put him on.”
Having lived with May and Happy before they married, he’s heard many arguments between the two of them, especially concerning him, but this feels like the first truly heated one.
But just as he is about to intervene he hears Happy's voice change and he freezes at the next words out of his Uncle's mouth.
“May, the last time he went off world he didn’t come back until five years later. I can’t go through that again.”
“I know Hap,” his aunt says in that understanding voice of hers, “Me either. But he’s an adult now and we have to trust him.”
“It’s not him I don’t trust.”
“Is it Thor then?”
“No. Yes.” Happy lets out a deep sigh, “I don’t know May. It’s just if he’s out there. In space. I can’t go help him if he needs me.”
“Ah. There it is.” May says knowingly.
They’re both silent for a long moment. Peter isn’t sure how to feel. He knows Happy cares about him. That he’s not just trying to fill in for the missing hole that Tony, and his Uncle Ben, and his parents left when they died. Happy has never once let him down.
“Well,” May finally says, “why don’t you contact Nebula or Carol? Give them a heads up to be ready. You know, just in case.”
Happy growls softly.
“I’ll take that as an okay. You big bear, you. Now give your nephew a hug from me and just believe he’ll be back before you even miss him.”
“Not likely.” Happy grumbles and Peter walks away as they start their I love yous and goodbyes.
He gets that hug the next day just before he leaves with Thor.
“Don’t make me have to come to space to save your ass, Kid.”
Peter chuckles into his Uncle's shoulder, “I won’t.”
“Because you better believe I will.” Happy pats him on the back and pulls away. Peter can’t help the shine in his eyes as he steps back.
“You sure can be a sentimental grumpy bear, you know that right?”
“Whatever.” Happy grumbles as Morgan takes his hand and leads him away from the superheroes.
“Don’t worry, Pete, I’ll take good care of him and even give him my spiderman stuffey to cuddle while you’re gone.” They both chuckle as Happy yanks his hand from hers and storms up to the house in a huff.
“You both are worse than your dad. At least I got paid to look after him.”
Peter is still laughing as Thor calls the bifrost and they leave the planet.
