actually one of my fave details that im close to writing soon is that the first memory beau has of a specific symptom after bobbys diagnosis that impacts him (bc initially he was not displaying any which was also very weird to process) is this one time in beau’s room when they were doing their own thing and bobby was so fatigued he just fell asleep for hours which is not something he’s ever done. but the detail that makes me crazy is he fell asleep whilst he was reading midnight cowboy the novel because like. this is a movie he watched when he was far too young to understand it but knew he was compelled by the aesthetics + the idea of men being “tutti frutti” lol + what he understood of the story and the ending….so for him to revisit it not only as an adult but as an adult who despite not being in the same situation as the story is trying to process that he is sick himself and going to die and his friends are gonna have to go through that….yeah.

bobby as a movie head kind of hilarious to me because unlike beau he’s not fixated on one specific genre so his canon fave movies of all time are so varied. you start dating bobby and he’s excited to show you all his fave movies and it’s like midnight cowboy, strangers on a train because he thinks farley granger is hot, videodrome, suspiria, a really mid romance drama because it has al pacino playing a character named bobby, the evil dead, every david cronenberg and john waters movie and also the muppets take manhattan

2022 MOVIE OF THE WEEK #30

enola holmes. finally, i get to use this movie poster! i’ve had it saved on my computer for literally years because i knew i wanted to watch this as soon as it was announced--i love millie bobby brown. but, because i’m terrible at actually sitting down and focusing on movies, my excitement did not lead to me ever seeing it. until yesterday, because with the sequel coming out it was the perfect time to watch it with @actuallylukedanes​. (anyone following my reviews will have noticed that this strategy works much better than trying to talk myself into viewing movies alone.)

i feel like this one is unusually easy for me to review briefly. (lol or so i thought so you get a cut for length after all.) it’s just a good time, and i don’t have complicated feelings about it. the twists and turns worked for me, even when they were predictable, the cast had even more of my faves than i knew going in, and they all do a great job. sam claflin made an unfortunately effective, obnoxious mycroft. and i light up inside when fiona shaw appears anywhere. 

where fourth wall breaking is concerned, it never bothers me, but i definitely liked it better on fleabag and gentleman jack. i think there were some elements of the movie that i couldn’t appreciate as much, just because i’m not a teenager anymore. which is unusual for me because i never have trouble remembering that stage of my life, and i often still love teen stories--moxie was a netflix movie i didn’’t expect to like but i enjoyed it a lot. 

it’s either that or the fact that this movie was adapted and directed by men, so it’s their idea of what a teenage girl (including her inner life) is like. i’m not familiar with the source material to compare. but some of the fourth wall breaking and the way she reacts to having her hand kiss left me wondering if i cringed at that because i actually found it impossible to understand and relate to...or if i’ve just forgotten how much like that i was when i was younger. 

i loved the story, and it made me really happy that she got to see her mom by the end but that their reunion wasn’t a magical happy ending. her mother was still a revolutionary who was choosing the fight over being a mom, and her apology couldn’t repair the damage she caused when she abandoned enola to sudden adulthood. it felt perfectly complicated, in the way that i wish more media reflected mother/daughter dynamics. part of growing up, for enola, meant learning who her mother really was, and never being able to see her or their past as simple again. that just felt true to life and i appreciated it. 

her romance felt forced in that ‘of course a teen girl needs a boy love interest’ way to me, but at least he was made necessary by the story. i hated his hair after she cut it, which is a tiny petty thing, but it distracted me because then the whole time she was gaining interest in him i was like ‘why though?? he was only cute before!’ lol. they were well-suited as people, so i did like that. 

if their relationship continues in the sequel i’ll be interested to see if/how they make him matter to the plot, outside of romance, because that was definitely a strength of this movie for me. she needed someone to save, someone who would need her after her mother abandoned her, while he would not have survived without her--and his life created her very first mystery to solve and find her way forward. so i wonder how they continue on from there, if he’ll just be The Boyfriend now while she has adventures.

henry cavill was a great sherlock. finding out randomly when i was looking up this movie that netflix got sued over his portrayal of sherlock, because he gave him emotions, is beyond hilarious to me and only makes me love him more. 

i loved the violent suffragettes, and the single person in existence who was not even a little impressed by sherlock, and all the codes (i played with ciphers my whole childhood and i’m pretty sure i didn’t even know who sherlock holmes was then, so i like the invention of his clever younger sister.) i enjoyed feminist mom helena bonham carter whose intentions were good but whose choices were complicated at best, selfish at worst. 

i really didn’t need enola being dragged to a finishing school against her will, but of course i enjoyed fiona shaw running it. and mycroft in the carriage with enola taking away her money--her last hint of freedom--gave me a sense of true menace, which was upsetting...but with that kind of portrayal sam claflin managed to make me completely not recognize him until his name flashed in the end credits, so i must offer respect for his acting.

like i said, this one was overall just a good time and i am excited for the sequel now that i am prepared to watch it. let’s hope it doesn’t take me two years. :)

Alex in High School - Circa 1995

Here is what I think my fave fanny pack loving, socially anxious fave would have been like in high school. 

(I didn’t add anything about the possible underground gay scene in the 1990s because I don’t know enough about it and didn’t want to misrepresent or fetishize)

Alex would have been a total people person pre-coming out. He was known by a lot of people in the school, took part in drama productions, helped on dance committees and did literally all he could to be around people.

He was also in the choir, something that Reggie and Luke both gave him a ton of crap for. They always told him that he didn’t need it because of the band, but the boy never quit. 

After he came out, people started talking and rumors started spiraling and so he quit a lot of the things that he loved to do. He put his focus on the band and the boys. 

He often came to band practice angry after school, especially if one of the guys had said some less than friendly things to him during the day. Alex took all of his anger out on his drums when he could. 

Alex was well loved by female teachers though. He quickly made friends with the librarians, along with his English and History teachers. He’d often go visit them before and after school just to talk and be around someone if not with Luke Bobby and Reggie.

He often kept his head down in the hallway, only really making small talk with those in his classes, and spending the majority of his time outside of school with the boys.

Alex loved running. It gave him a chance to cancel out the rest of the world and just focus on the present. He would go on runs before school or after band practice. 

If he’s having an extra stressful day, he’ll do sprints out on the track during his free period. If the boys can’t find him at any time, they normally know that he’s out there and will go search for him.

Alex spends a lot of time on homework. It kept his mind off of everything happening at home. He’d spend late nights in Bobby’s garage doing work with Luke so that they both could get out of their houses. 

He volunteers a lot. He goes to nursing homes to sit with the residents and keep them company on the weekends. He likes that they see him for who he is and know nothing about his sexuality to judge him on it. 

He LOVES cats. I get the biggest vibe that Alex would be exhausted by dogs or any animal that needs a large amount of attention all the time. However with cats??? Alex will hold a kitten in his arms until it falls asleep, refusing to put it down. 

He is the obvious moral compass of the group, and this was no different in high school. He often stopped Luke and Reggie from skipping class. He’d remind them how many days left they had until senior year every day, explaining that they were “so close” to graduating, even though they had a couple years left. 

He would often be the one to let the boys know when they were drinking too much at parties. He’d always be the designated driver and make sure that all the boys got home safe. 

Alex would force the boys to go to art and indie events. He would make them go to gallery shows and musicals, even if they didn’t want to. Even though Luke, Bobby and Reggie would complain or sleep the whole time, Alex was wide-eyed and smiling because at least someone would go with him to these events. 

Alex would have venting sessions with Reggie, Bobby and Luke when fights with his parents would get really bad. Luke didn’t really know what to say all the time, but he would help Alex put his feelings into lyrics and help him write songs about it (I just know Luke couldn’t be the only songwriter in the group?!)

Alex had trouble sleeping often. He would spend a lot of nights staring at the ceiling and overthinking, especially after fights with his mom and dad. His lack of sleep ended in more turning into more of an insomnia kind of thing that really impacted him. The boys would force him to take naps when they saw him start to really daze during rehearsals.

ok so just a heads-up, i don’t really remember much from s10 onwards (a lot of those episodes i haven’t actually watched since they aired whoops) and i’m currently stuck at the beginning of s9 on my complete rewatch soooo this list focuses only on the first half of the show. i might do an update if i ever manage to finish my rewatch (and remember to post an update at all when the time comes)

ok here we go:

4x16 - On the Head of a Pin

dean calls cas “cas” to his face for the very first time

dean is all “you can't ask me to do this, cas. not this.” (about torturing alastair) and uriel is all “who said anything about asking”, but cas is all: “this is too much to ask, i know. but we have to ask it” and that is the moment that dean realizes that cas cares about him and his feelings/well-being and that’s when he demands to speak to cas alone 

and it’s only after cas tells dean he really doesn’t want dean being forced to do the torturing that Dean gives in (”i would give anything not to have you do this”)

like, it’s so obvious already how much cas cares about dean already and we’re only in s4

 cas is even starting to go down the path of disobedience (with a little help from anna admittedly, but still. he’s starting to consider it)

they’re so?? comfortable?? with each other. when cas visits dean at the hospital in the end

4x22 - Lucifer Rising

dean literally makes an angel fall in this ep, i mean come on... (the way cas shows up behind him all “you asked to see me” after dean smashes the angel statue cracks me up every single time gsdlka)

dean desperately trying to get cas to help him (bc he knows that IF there’s an angel that would help him it’s cas)

cas is too afraid though and dean gets pissed and literally breaks up with him (D: "you spineless, soulless son of a bitch. what do you care about dying? you're already dead. we're done." C: "dean-" D: "we're done!")

this is the episode in which cas makes his decision and chooses dean over heaven

5x03 - Free to Be You and Me

in the previous episode sam and dean had a fight and split up. this episode starts out with dean being pissed and annoyed and just in a bad mood in general

when cas shows up and asks for help dean is very grumpy and doesn’t want to help at first but then reluctantly agrees

throughout the episode, the more time dean spends with cas the better his mood gets (honestly this point is worthy of its own separate post, i have enough screenshots lmao)

like he’s even smiling at the end of the ep when he’s talking to cas in the car!! (except then he looks over and realizes cas has left mid-conversation again and that smile is wiped right off his face and i’m sad :( )

when they’re in that brothel dean mostly has eyes for cas, even when chastity the hooker is standing right next to him

after the brothel incident when dean is cracking up and goes “it's been a long time since I've laughed that hard. it's been more than a long time. years.” like... buddy. your crush is showing.

and the way cas smiles lovingly at dean laughing next to him

dean be like: “personal space”     also dean: *reaches into cas’s coat without hesitation* *fixes cas’s shirt and tie without hesitation*

also the funniest thing about the whole “personal space” moment in the motel is that there was more than enough space for dean to step aside and increase the distance between him and cas if he had really been all that uncomfortable but he just. doesn’t. no he just stays right where he is 

when raphael is trapped in the holy oil and threatens cas all “castiel, I'm warning you. do not leave me here. i will find you.” and cas goes “maybe one day. but today, you're my little bitch.” and walks away and dean tells raphael “what he said” like the impressed and proud boyfriend that he is

cas be looking at sam while listing all the things people can be starving for, and then looks at dean before saying “love” 

ok i know this doesn’t have that many points but really this entire ep is great, i very much enjoy all the interactions between cas and dean in this ep

like when dean is not hungry and cas is all “you're not gonna finish that?” and grabs the plate without waiting for an answer bc they’re this married in s5 already

6x20 - The Man Who Would Be King

i mean... this one is obvious isn’t it

this ep is literally all about how cas is doing everything for the winchesters aka dean

the way sam and bobby cautiously voice their suspicions of cas to dean has the same energy as carefully breaking it to a family member that you think their partner is cheating on them 

and when they trap cas in the holy oil and confront him dean also acts like a betrayed wife(gn)

which is such a stark contrast to how sam and bobby react to the betrayal (they’re mostly just like “eh this sucks” while dean is emotionally affected)

and even in the following episodes dean is way more affected by cas’s betrayal than sam and bobby are and dean is the one who argues the most with cas (honestly, this entire arc is literally that post that’s all “how do i know dean is in love with cas? bc sam isn’t”)

ok but the holy oil scene is truly like a soap opera (i mean... “where were you when i needed to hear it?” “i was there. where were you?” and dean looking back at cas one last time before running away)

this is their first big break-up and it takes them until the s7 finale to make up

7x17 - The Born-Again Identity

7x21 - Reading is Fundamental

yet another one of those “how do I know dean is in love with cas? bc sam isn’t”

at the beginning of the ep at some point sam’s phone rings and when he says that meg (who is watching over cas at the mental hospital) is calling, dean is quick to stand up and even tho meg called sam, dean is the one who ends up having the phone call with her lmao

also dean has no chill during that phone call lmao (he’s irritated when he finds out meg didn’t call them right then and there as soon as cas woke up and he’s immediately concerned when meg says cas is different, while sam’s just standing there holding his phone out to dean, being all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ lmao)

dean: *pissed af at cas*    also dean: *almost breaks his own neck at the speed with which he whips his head around at the mention of cas’s name and is desperate to know his location when cas calls meg after dean blasted him away with some other angels at the hospital*

ok no but then meg tells cas their location and cas zaps into the car and it’s hilarious how quick dean is to interrupt whenever cas turns his attention to meg in that scene

8x07 - A Little Slice of Kevin

dean seeing cas everywhere

when you see your best dudebro outside the window in the middle of a storm but when you get up he’s gone and you feel like crap because you could’ve made it out of the war zone together and you just cannot fathom why he didn’t try harder and you just don’t understand why you’re feeling what you’re feeling (and judging by dean’s reaction to sam’s suggestion, clearly it’s not survivor’s guilt)

dean’s FACE when cas suddenly appears behind him in the bathroom

jacting joices: the infamous boner scene (yet another example of “how do I know dean is in love with cas? bc sam isn’t”)

jacting joices pt 2: sam and dean are talking case and then cas walks over to join the conversation and there is literally no reason for dean to check cas out (see here)

during the rescue mission when cas zaps into the room and has a stand-off with crowley and then when dean finally manages to break into the room, can i just say... the way dean immediately rushes to cas (who’s ended up on the floor) and grabs him by the shoulder before he bothers to look around the room

i was gonna put this as a special shoutout but then it turned out that i had more to say about this ep than i initially thought

it’s the way dean and cas keep gravitating towards each other in the first half of the episode. no seriously, they somehow keep ending up beside each other and you start wondering “what’s personal space” (friendly reminder that this is the ep right after they’re finally back together again after purgatory)

the married energy and the bickering

the “talk to me” scene where cas finally opens up to dean (but then interrupting moose strikes)

at the retirement home dean to sam and cas: “no flirting you two” then CUT to: dean and cas sitting at a table with an elderly lady who is staring at cas with heart eyes and... lady: “you are so pretty, charles” dean: *must look at young nurse’s butt immediately to distract myself from gay thoughts*

i’m sorry but the way he smiles so widely at cas at one point when they’re talking to that lady, like, she’s just called cas a bounder and dean’s amused about that but his amusement is not in any way malicious and his face is just so full of love when he looks at Cas, it’s embarrassing really (see here)

9x06 - Heaven Can't Wait

ok so i haven’t watched this ep in like 5 years so my memories on this aren’t as fresh as with the previous eps but! it’s the way that cas and dean act exactly like exes (who are still in love with each other) in this ep

It’s the year 2021 and you’re obsessed with The Karate Kid. How are you feeling?:

Hell yeah! I love TKK, I’m feeling great about it, and I mean, I’ve met a lot of great people in the fandom and great friends <3 Cobra Kai is awesome too!

Did you grow up with TKK or are you new to the series?:

Lol, I guess I grew up with it? I saw TKK when I was six or seven years old and it’s a good memory because my dad was there from one of his excruciatingly long deployments and he had found it on television and he scooped me up and set me in his lap and we watched it together. Of course he fell asleep halfway through and the only reason he woke up was because I tried to do the flying kick that Bobby does to take out Danny’s knee, and I fell over and ended up busting my knee a little on the side of the coffee table, my dad woke up and ended up telling me off for hurting myself, but we sat down and watched the last minute, after he’d put a bandaid on my knee. My dad ended up getting it at the library a while later on VHS so I could see the beginning and ending because I had missed both, it’s kind of one of the best memories I have of my dad. After that, a lot of stuff happened in my life and I kinda forgot about it till I saw a trailer for Cobra Kai, and after that I rented the film from my local library, and watched it about five times... then on a different site I met @transjohnnylawrence and he asked me to a TKK watch party, which honestly was the best. ✨ I’ve met a lot of great people in this fandom and I am so happy that I found it again, because I’ve made some friends... <3 but I said that already :) ✨

We gotta do the basics. Favourite character:

TOMMY!!! lol... I don’t actually know... I love them all, but Bobby, Jimmy, Dutch, or Tommy for TKK, definitely Jessica is a top fave and I don’t mind Ali... my favorite character in Cobra Kai has to be either Robby or Amanda... or Moon or Demetri... but I really relate to Robby

Wax On, Wax Off or Sweep the Leg?:

I prefer neither. I guess I tend to go for the whole Mr. Miyagi speech about balance. That or ‘Get him a body bag, yeahhh,’ — Actually, I once changed the line just a little to use. I once flunked down into a chair at a cafeteria table, set my head down on the table, and stated ‘get me a body bag,’ and my friend looked at me and said ‘exams are going that bad huh?’ and I just nodded and proceeded to fall asleep on the table because I hadn’t had any sleep... also, I said ‘Get him a body bag’ once when my sister jokingly told me to sike our dad out when we were playing pool in teams... and I took it literally and my dad just looked very surprised and started laughing.... but yeah... what was the question? if i had to choose, it would be Sweep the Leg ... The silly little flannel with the camo pants... since I have worn something very similar and been teased for it... 😅😂 there’s so many that I liked though... I really dislike that he wears only suits now and they’re the stuffy kind...

Scene that lives in your head rent-free:

the goodbye scene with Tommy in Take a Right... it just sticks with me even though it’s a sad scene... but just hearing them talk by the campfire and seeing Tommy giving Johnny advice and helping him... and also, just... yeah, that just 🥺... got stuck in my head... that or the scene with Robby where he finds his childhood artwork at his dad’s apartment, I get emotionally drawn in thinking about my own childhood, for TKK it was the scene where Bobby is disqualified and throws his belt down in front of Kreese and walks out... and seeing Johnny’s face in the background as Bobby took Daniel out, it just is another sad scene. Or the Halloween fight where Bobby tells Johnny to leave Daniel alone... also, the beach scene with Johnny and Bobby being real pals on their bikes, and Dutch’s yellow helmet rolling across the ground... the soccer tryouts... I love soccer. The learning how to take a fall part because I’ve had that happen (but the kid wasn’t on a motorbike, just a regular bike, and it wasn’t a steep hill, but I had another kid knock me off my bike like that :/ )

Will Anthony LaRusso ever be relevant?:

oh man, you know it, that kid is gonna be like the master of Karate or something... that kid’s got mad skills... ha! I dunno 🤷🏼‍♀️ he’s there as a foil or something... anyways, he absolutely annoys the heck out of me because he reminds me of a kid I babysat once... but yeah, they’ll probably make him more relevant...

Oh dang, yeah... ummmm, well... Iceman’s been back on my mind lately. It started with the internet rumor that Shia Labeouf was being considered to play the role of Bobby Drake in a Marvel Cinematic Universe version of the X-Men. My DMs and @Mentions on social media were a mixture of intense reaction and then asking my take on who would make a great Bobby Drake (for the record: in my head I always saw him as a younger Antoni Porowski with a theater background, ‘cuz playing the funny guy with a vulnerable streak requires serious acting shops). My mind went back to the time of BC, when I was doing a lot of touring, and answering this very question because of my work on the Iceman book at Marvel. One thing led to another, and I decided to take a trip further down memory lane to look at my favorite volume of the series: Amazing Friends. Now, I know I’ve spent equal amounts of time publicly stating what a gift working on Iceman was, while also calling out the challenges that came with the experience, but the third volume really was a pure blessing. I was able to take every valuable lesson I learned as a writer, and apply it to telling a story that would be interesting to one person: Me. I’ve been a lifelong X-Men fan, I live and breathe comics, so my own expectations for a return to the series seemed like the only ones to really worry about meeting/ surpassing. The first two volumes had been so bogged down by rotating editors, complex continuity, company-wide events, multiple artists… The third volume was my chance to focus on what an Iceman series was outside of so much context. All that mattered was challenging myself to do an X-Men story that focused on the aspects of the franchise I felt were valuable and relevant, meaning: excuses to have Emma Frost be an asshole and finding an opportunity to make fun of Kitty Pryde’s haircut. Before moving on from Marvel, Axel Alonso made time to call me for a pep talk about the series. I wanted to get the series extended, and he wanted to help me succeed with the ten issues he could commit to. First, he offered an eleventh issue to give me more time on the stands. He took a look at everything I had planned, and basically told me to restructure with an eye for ramping up the pace. My writing background comes from prose and essays/ think pieces… both of which are methodical and provide some allowance from the reader to really take your time and set up the world before diving into the meat. That’s not the case with comics. You gotta work fast. Especially in today’s market, there is less and less room for a retailer to say, “give it two volumes, because shit starts really coming together by the third trade.” That was literally my speech for hooking people on such iconic series as Invincible, Fables, and Strangers in Paradise. Nowadays, every single issue is not a brick to be laid down as foundation so much as a bullet in your gun. Conflicting imagery, but that’s the point. Axel told me to think about the Big Moments in my life and sort out how to inject the mutant metaphor into it and make the most compelling comic book story I could. This was epic advice that I took with me into the new arc, but I struggled a bit with what could be bigger than the “coming out” storyline in volume one. Love was off the table because I wanted to keep Bobby single and ready to mingle. Death was off the table too, because my editor felt like we’d done enough with Bobby’s parents in the first two volumes. Upon looking at my own life, and considering the stuff me and my friends were dealing with, I landed on something a bit more reflective than LIFE or DEATH. I wanted to focus on that moment when a gay guy looks outside of himself and realizes the folks around him may not have it so easy. After everything we’ve been dealing with this summer, Iceman’s “big issue” of the arc feels oddly prescient. Bobby Drake had to reconcile his accidental complicit role in keeping the Morlocks down, and he has to investigate new approaches to being a better ally to those who don’t want to or can’t live under the protection of the X-Men. I used the Morlocks to allegorically speak to the issues that the trans/ NB community face today. Considering that trans folks are facing higher rates of homelessness and murder than other members of the LGBTQIA+ community, all I needed to do was find a perfect villain to treat the Morlocks as “lesser-than.” Cue Mister Sinister, who I wrote as particularly Darwinist with a major flair for interactive theater. While Amazing Friends definitely is the most fun I’ve had working on the book, it was also full of the heaviest shit I’ve written about. I’m so grateful that my editor let me use Emma Frost for a story about the trauma of gay conversion therapy with her brother Christian, but I’m still annoyed he wouldn’t let me put her in a sickening Givenchy outfit for her reveal. Similarly, creating the Madin character required that I chat with several mental healthcare professionals and members of the NB community to respectfully portray them as a resilient and fleshed out hero. I included personal lessons that I learned from years of the therapy (the sandcastle / sea image, a Jay Edidin fave moment). My editor and I weren’t always aligned, but we definitely were on each other’s side. He understood what I was trying to do and asked questions when something flew over his head, and he even had the good instincts to stop me from going too heavy handed with the ending. My original idea for the arc’s finale was to have Bobby become permanently scarred in his fight with Sinister, where he’d have a cool ice gash running across his face or something, a la Squall from Final Fantasy 8. The goal was to show Iceman stripping himself of his ability to pass as non-mutant to save the Morlocks, but the Mutant Pride fight scene being a stand-in for the Stonewall Riots kind of already made enough of a statement. Plus, no one in editorial wanted to deal with remembering to track his scar in other books. At first I tried to balk at his point of view, but when I looked over my original notes for the series, the point was to focus on optimism and hope. Giving Bobby a permanent scar and emphasizing the notion of sacrifice was too bleak a message for a series wherein the hero carbo-loads hoagies while riding an ice scooter and mutant drag queens emcee local festivals. Of course, the crowning achievement of the series… my mutant drag queen :) I’ve witnessed a lot when it comes to the world of pop culture and myth-making, and I 100% believe that you can’t plan the success of something. I’ve seen bands forced into breaking up because labels spend six figures failing at making listeners connect with an album. I witnessed firsthand how The Walking Dead was built from relatively humble beginnings as a buzzy cable drama into a literal international phenomenon over the course of its first three seasons. Everyone hopes for the best, but you never know how something will land with audiences. When the Shade character took off, I was truly astounded. Things I posted on Instagram while half-asleep became official quotes on major news sites. Queens and cosplayers were interpreting her like Margot Robbie had unveiled a new Harley Quinn lewk. The impact was so legit and immediate that we had to jump in and give Shade a proper Marvel hero alias, to truly welcome her into the X-Men canon. Hence the name change to Darkveil. (Funny story: I tried to fight hard for Madame X as an alias, but CB didn’t want another Agent X / “X-Name” character. Three months later, Madonna announced the Madame X album. Phew!) There was a time where I felt uncertain that the folks in charge at Marvel would bring Darkveil into any stories outside of the ones I wrote. My understanding was that Hickman was like the Cylons and had A Plan-- one that didn’t include her character. I made peace with my contribution to the Marvel Universe being contained, but then someone on social media pointed out that Darkveil showed up in an issue of Marvel Voices. After breaking down and reading Hickman’s House of X, I saw that his Plan was one of endless possibilities, and that he was moving EVERY character into new and dynamic places. I have hope now that he sees the possibilities with Darkveil, and takes advantage of her and all of her many body pouches. Amazing Friends really is my favorite thing I’ve done for the Big Two. I made a lifelong friend out of artist Nate Stockman (DC, please hire us for a Plasticman book), and I got to run a victory lap with the most encouraging and supportive readers out there. It was worth every dreadful conversation, every shitty thing a person said to me online, and all of the fun nonsense that goes into being creative for a living. Being stuck at home in quarantine has given me a lot of time to reflect on the gift that my career to date has been, and I feel so grateful to be where I am today. Other people may groan when they have to talk about something they’ve moved on from, but not me. I made people happier, I got to work with my favorite characters at Marvel, and and I'll say it again: it’s a frickin’ gift to make people move from your work. So, I will engage every tweet or message asking me my thoughts about who should play Bobby Drake in the Marvel Cinematic Universe… I’ll just never have a good answer.

All right, you have officially sold me on Bobby Drake. Where do I start reading?

Its a good question, lol! Honestly, it mostly just depends on how far back you want to go. I mean, he’s been around for sixty years, lol, so there’s a shit ton of appearances to wade through, and it depends on how familiar you are with the X-Men as a whole. 

If you’re not familiar with the X-Men or Marvel in general, this is actually a really good time to jump in with reading the current books without much prior knowledge. Just last year the X-books underwent a huge status quo shakeup in the two limited series House of X and Powers of X, that pretty much like....transformed their entire place in the Marvel Universe as a whole and gave them a whole new playing field that was all pretty clearly laid out within just those two series. So its a really good starting point to kinda catch up quick to where things stand now and then just branch out from there to whatever catches your interest. 

Bobby’s a main character in a book called Marauders currently, which is only on issue #6 or #7 right now, and the book is pretty central to the major happenings in the X-Men’s corner of the universe. Plus a lot of great characters in the rest of the cast - Storm, Bishop, Emma Frost, etc.

If you want to start from way far back and have a good long, consistent read, the original X-Factor (the first series, vol 1) is where I would go. I don’t think anyone really needs to read the original X-Men series from the 60s to get a handle on the characters or universe, and personally I’ve always found X-Factor a much better read using all the same characters except with the added bonus of no Xavier. As he is. The Worst. 

Between the original X-Men run and X-Factor’s debut, Bobby, Angel and Beast popped up on various other superteams, like Bobby and Angel were on the Champions together for a bit, and then the three of them were on a team called the Defenders for a while...if you can find old Defenders issues online (this would have been back in the 70s/early 80s), they’re worth checking out just for Bobby’s brief romance with a shapeshifting character named Cloud who he first met as a woman but later shifted into a man. And while they decided to just be friends at that point, given that this was the era of the Comics Code when gay relationships were ‘frowned upon,’ this was the earliest and most blatant gay-coding of Bobby, literal decades before he was made canon gay in the comics. Plus, they’re just pretty fun stories and Bobby and Cloud were super cute together.

But yeah, then X-Factor ran for a number of years without interruption, staying consistent with the same core cast of just the original five X-Men and the supporting characters they introduced in that series, like Rictor (another future famous gay X-character, just a wee punk teenager at the time, lol). It was pretty fun overall, IMO, should give anyone new to the Marvel U a pretty solid grasp of all the major players in it, and its where a lot of big names like Apocalypse made their debut. And of course, I think Bobby was well written throughout it. X-Factor was also where a couple of the things I mentioned in that post happened, like the storyline where Loki kidnapped Bobby to use his powers to make his army.

After that.....basically, the original X-Men left that title to rejoin the X-Men when Marvel relaunched the X-Men line with a brand new X-Men #1 in the early 90s....and at the same time, they kept the already existing Uncanny X-Men title going, which was around #280 at that time. 

Since they had such a huge cast of characters at that point, they split the X-Men into two fairly iconic lineups, the Blue and the Gold....the Blue team were the chronicled in the adjectiveless X-Men book, and featured Cyclops, Gambit, Psylocke, Beast, Wolverine, Rogue and others, while the Gold team were the main characters of the continuing Uncanny X-Men title from again, around #280 and onward. The Gold team was Bobby, Jean Grey, Colossus, Storm, Archangel, and then later Bishop as well, etc. 

This era was where a lot of the best Bobby stories took place, IMO. Very early after the Gold team was formed, Bobby had a mishap with Mikhail Rasputin, the older brother of Colossus, whose powers shifted Bobby into his organic ice form for the very first time, where he became living ice that he could control and shapeshift and heal, rather than just cover himself with ice. This was the beginning of them exploring the versatility of Bobby’s powers and what eventually led to them making him an omega level mutant, though even back in X-Factor they’d established that he was far more powerful than anyone had realized before that.

Then Uncanny X-Men #311 continued this and launched one of the most pivotal periods in Bobby’s development. An accident led to a comatose Emma Frost’s mind jumping into Bobby’s body and taking control, and she used his body and powers to seek revenge for the deaths of her own students, and in the process pushed his powers even further than anyone had thought possible. This is where he came to realize he could literally teleport by melting into any body of water and recreating himself anywhere else connected to that body of water, like traveling from one end of a river to another, or even across oceans instantly....as well as proving to him that he could literally get holes blown in his ice form and just fill them up with new ice and transform back into his flesh and blood self, none the worse for wear. 

This period also led to him showing up in Generation X a lot, where Emma became one of the teachers for that generation of young mutants, because during this time, Bobby and Emma like....clashed a lot, because Bobby had a lot of issues about her hijacking his body and then taking it on what was essentially a suicide run at the time, and was also resentful of her being instantly able to do things with his powers he hadn’t even conceived of with years of training with them, and Emma was....prickly at the best of times, back then even moreso than now, so she tended to taunt him with this and push his buttons by insinuating she knew more about him than he did himself, and she knew what really was holding him back all these years, etc, etc....but then they eventually formed a very unconventional but real rapport, and decades later, they still have this weird thing where they’d probably never admit to even liking each other, but they probably respect each other more than just about any other of their teammates combined. (Also, the Christian that Bobby is currently with in the comics is Emma’s older brother).

Back to Uncanny X-Men....to take his mind off of everything that the body-jacking by Emma had brought up for him, and because Rogue was having a lot of similar issues due to her new relationship with Gambit and the glimpse of various secrets of his that she’d gotten via her own powers....Bobby and Rogue decided to take a road trip together, that went on for about a dozen issues all in all, and are some of my all time favorite Bobby stories. This includes Uncanny #319, where they go visit Bobby’s parents together and Bobby tells off his dad in epic fashion (this was literally the first comic I ever read, and still one of my faves today, lol....also he made a giant ice palace off the coastline that was as big as a city and that has nothing to do with anything except for the fact that it was very pretty and very gay. Foreshadowing!)

Then there were a couple of big iconic crossover events that took over all the titles for awhile - the first was the alternate universe Age of Apocalypse event - and its worth tracking down and reading in its entirety, IMO. Definitely one of the most pivotal ‘events’ in Marvel history, but it was actually pretty good, too? LOL. And the Age of Apocalypse version of Bobby was pretty bad ass. (He returned in Rick Remender’s X-Force title about fifteen years later, but we don’t speak of Rick Remender or that return, for both are bad and wrong).

Then reality was restored, and the Onslaught crossover happened, and like.....really the only thing you need to know about that is its basically where the entire Marvel Universe teamed up to fight the evil brain baby slash hatechild of Professor X and Magneto. I’m just saying. Read it at your own peril. I’m not even saying its BAD, I’m just saying. Read it at your own peril.

Then in Uncanny X-Men #340.....that’s the issue where Bobby left the team for awhile to take care of his dad after he was almost killed at that hate rally I mentioned in one of my Bobby posts today, so I forget where the whole ‘going undercover in Graydon Creed’s campaign’ storyline started, but back up a bit from there and you’d be good to go. He and Sam (Cannonball) went undercover together and that was basically the start of the epic Bobby and Sam bromance slash subtextual romance that I still love to this day, too.

Then he was out of the books for awhile, off taking care of his dad, and didn’t really return until this big event called Operation: Zero Tolerance happened, wherein the government went after the X-Men directly and captured pretty much all their big guns, and Bobby came back to help and had to single-handedly rescue a bunch of random mutants from Sentinels and make an interim team with which to like, save the day themselves. O:ZT is actually a really good story for him, I really like how competent he was portrayed there, and also it was the introduction of Dr. CeCe Reyes, who is also a fave. She was also briefly a sorta/not sorta love interest for Bobby, that of course didn’t ultimately go anywhere. On account of, y’know. His Massive Gayness.

Then Bobby left the team again to go return to taking care of his dad, and also because certain writers hated him (though tbh, Bobby’s actually one of the longest running heroes in the Marvel U, as in....he’s spent the longest consecutive times active in various books/teams without taking breaks, compared to pretty much all other characters who aren’t Wolverine, Captain America or Spider-man. He was a constant presence in books pretty much from his creation up until the mid-90s, so like, he was due for some time-off. I GUESS. WHATEVER).

From this point, he didn’t return until a storyline called The Twelve. It was very bad, and very dumb, and you should not read it. Your brain cells will thank me later.

Then there was a miniseries called X-Men Forever - this you SHOULD read, as its where the term omega mutant was essentially coined for the first time in the way its been used ever since, and its where both Bobby and Jean found out they were omega level mutants for the first time. And Mystique and Toad and Juggernaut were also there because....idk, tbh. That was all very strange to me. But! Still! Worth a read!

Then came a veeeeery underrated Iceman solo miniseries of four issues, that is weird but also very worth tracking down as it was a great Bobby, very poignant and also kinda sad, but like. I’d highly recommend. Especially as it was pretty much the last good Bobby for awhile, with the exception of Joe Casey, who wrote a decent Bobby but a terrible Everyone Else.

Then we enter the Dark Ages of Bobby. Where everything is bad and all the writers are the worst.

First up is Chuck Austen. Bobby was a core member of his X-Men lineup, throughout his run. This is not a good reason to read Chuck Austen’s run. Do not read Chuck Austen’s run. You’re welcome.

Then there was Peter Milligan’s run. Peter Milligan’s run was not as bad as Austen’s run. This is not a good reason to read Peter Milligan’s run. Do not read Peter Milligan’s run. You’re welcome.

Then Mike Carey took over. You CAN read Mike Carey’s run. You probably even SHOULD read Mike Carey’s run. He is not perfect, but he liked Bobby and we like him for liking Bobby. His Bobby actually spoke in complete sentences and displayed more than one emotion per issue. And Supernovas is a pretty good arc and was actually where the Children of the Vault were first introduced, and they were just brought back in the most recent X-Men issue to be a recurring antagonist, so they’re like. Relevant and stuff.

And then there’s Messiah Complex, which is basically the Advent of Oh Hai, Everything’s About To Get Just Fucking AWFUL For Mutants From Here For the Next Ten Years Or So, and there’s like....blechness with Bobby and Mystique, which...I mean....all else aside, she’s Rogue’s MOM, but WHATEVER. Look, there were....plot reasons. Kinda. So. Whatever. Just blink rapidly and move on from that as quickly as you can.

You can pretty safely jump ship at that point, because Divided We Stand is No, Second Coming is Ugh, and Schism is Why. And also there’s Age of X in there somewhere, which is to be avoided because Age of X basically just wanted to be Age of Apocalypse and its not Age of Apocalypse. Just like Age of X-Man is similarly not Age of Apocalypse, and even Age of Apocalypse 2.0 is not Age of Apocalypse. Stop trying to be Age of Apocalypse, everybody. NONE OF YOU ARE AGE OF APOCALYPSE.

You may have one (1) year of Marjorie M. Liu writing Astonishing X-Men, as a treat. She wrote a great Bobby, this was where the whole ‘freezing the whole Earth, whoopsie’ thing happened, and it was a great and very underrated story.

Then post Schism there’s stuff like Wolverine and the X-Men, where Bobby’s a main character after being lured to take Logan’s side in the Schism instead of Scott’s, with the promise of Being Relevant. ‘Twas a lie. Bobby ‘twas there, but hardly relevant. And Jason Aaron is not as good a writer as advertised, since he’s mostly the one doing the advertising and like.....dude should not trust his own hype. There’s weird and whimsical, and then there’s just plain WEIRD, and most of Wolverine and the X-Men is the latter, claiming to be the former, and like. You can’t trust anyone these days.

Then comes the Era of Bendis. Die, Era of Bendis, Die. 

Do not read the Era of Bendis. Do not speak of the Era of Bendis. If the Era of Bendis bursts into flames on the street next to you, look pointedly away, and trip anyone who runs up to try and douse the Era of Bendis with a bucket of water.

Just trust me. The Bendis, and then the Hopeless (that’s the name of the actual writer who took over on All New X-Men, but it pretty well sums up the feelings of Bobby fans on the matter too, ‘twas fate), and then the Bendis again....bad, bad, bad and also Superbad, but not the movie.

You will hear promises, siren songs, of a young, teenage time-displaced Bobby Drake having his first boyfriend, an Inhuman named Romeo. THIS IS A LIE. ITS A TRICK! A TRAP! DO NOT FALL FOR IT! 

Basically everything is blah blah blahful for awhile....until the Bobby solo series by Sina Grace, which gets a bad rap, but I maintain its worth the read. Like, I’m not going to call it my favorite take on him or anything like that, but its still good fun and a vastly more competent and compelling Bobby than anything Bendis ever eked out.

And that basically catches us up to the present, where we’re at with Marauders.

Lindsey held a finger to Mackenzie’s lips,shushing her from laughing trying to contain her own as they sneak through thefoyer of the mansion for season 10. Mackenzie’s hand finds Lindsey, pullingthem with her into the kitchen, glowing with the nightlight that the crew usedto maneuver within the early hours of the morning to not wake the contestantsbefore need be. Mackenzie leads Lindsey from the kitchen towards the producers’area, their movements slow and steady to not alert anyone of their presence.

Stalking up to the room leading to theproducers’ cell, Lindsey slides a bobby pin into Mack’s hand before taking a fewsteps away to keep watch for any sign of late night producing that Jen and Omarcould be up to. After a few clicks, Lindsey hears the rattle of the doorknobsignifying the entrance of the producers’ room. Lindsey could barely make outanything in the dark, a soft glow of light coming from a room down the halltheir curious eye causing them to approach it.

Lindsey presses their ear to the door hearingthe tail end of a conversation between Omar and Jen…. about Carson? They keeptheir ear pressed tightly against the door, hearing the whisper of the voices.

“He’s out of control!” Omar’s voice groans,“We need a better showrunner, Jen.”

“We’ve already filed complaints, what more doyou want to do?”

“Carson had the right idea, sabotage.”

Lindsey looks back to see Mackenzie sneakingout of the room, closing the door quietly behind her letting the door click asit relocked. Mackenzie’s eyes register the darkness looking for Lindsey,confusion falling over her whispering Lindsey’s name softly. Lindsey pushes themselvesup from the floor holding their breath holding that the producer hadn’toverheard them in the hallway when the floor creaks underneath them.

“Did you hear something?”

“Go, go, go,” Lindsey whispers loudly, movingforward taking Mackenzie’s hand into their own glancing over their shoulder thesound of approaching footsteps coming from the room they were previouslyeavesdropping in. Lindsey leads Mack quickly down the hall, both of themholding their breath as they scale the kitchen silently and quickly, moving tothe stairs leading back up to the bedrooms. Their shadows flicker before thelight in the kitchen, casting their figures on the wall behind them.

“I could’ve sworn I heard something.” Omar’svoice trails off, “I’m starving.”

Mackenzie and Lindsey share a knowing looktaking the mansion stairs two by two, being sure not to creak the floorboardsbeneath them. They slip down the hallway, the sound of their feet hitting thefloor as they take off in a sprint towards their bedroom the both of themtrying their best to keep from bursting with laughter. Mackenzie enters theroom first and Lindsey closes it behind themselves, the door thudding as itcloses turning to Mack, the skin on their arms standing with excitement.Mackenzie lays the food onto her bed, a handful of fizzy sodas and didn’ttreats not granted to them regularly.

“I can’t believe we got away with it.” Lindseylaughs, they fall onto Mack’s bed beside the floor looking over the array ofsnacks with interest plucking an ice cream sandwich from the pile of frozentears. “You literally got a little bit of everything. I think I’m in love withyou for bringing us this harvest.”

“I’m just that great, babe,” Mackenzie smirks,she swipes up a personal sized box of Mochi. She busies herself with the box ofMochi ignoring the last part of Lindsey’s statement which left a weird feelingin the pit of her stomach, in love withyou. The moment distracts her for a while before she speaks up to smoothover the awkwardness she created. “Green tea,” she reads from the box, “Not myfavorite, but good enough as is.” She pulls out the crinkly package removingthe frozen treats from their plastic constraints, without many options forplates, she places them on top of the mochi box smiling deliciously. “I’mstarved for this.”

“Why do you think they won’t let us haveaccess to stuff like this?” Lindsey asks.

Mackenzie shrugs, “Who knows, they probablydon’t.” Both laugh at Mackenzie’s comment settling into Mackenzie’s bed,crammed close together with the food on the other side of them. Mackenzie takesone of the mochi balls, plopping it into her mouth her teeth sinking into thechewy rice flour before finding the delicious creamy center. Sweet green teamelting on her tongue, she sighs contently devouring her treat.

Lindsey takes the final bite of her ice creamsandwich, rubbing her hands together to drop the crumbs onto the floor, meltedvanilla ice cream on their hand. They bring it to their lips, sucking off thefrozen dairy their eyes finding Mack’s, a smile on her lips. Lindsey takes theother mochi ball, taking a small bite out of the frozen treat, the sweet icecream center melting on their tongue tasting perfectly of green tea.

“Did you steal my mochi?” Mackenzie laughs,leaning forward.

Lindsey blushes, “What if I did?” They holdthe remaining of the treat in their hand.

“I’ll have to take it back from you.”Mackenzie challenges, “And we both know, I’ll win.” Her voice warm againstLindsey’s ear, her hand moving up Lindsey’s arm lulling them into hertantalizing touch. Their skin warm under her touch, still fraught with coldfrom her snacks. As she reaches for the mochi, Lindsey turns with ease holdingthe snack above their head out of Mackenzie’s reach.

“You’ll have to try harder than that.” Theytease.

Mackenzie smirks, “Watch me.”

Mackenzie snakes her arms around Lindsey’sbody, moving to lean over them. Lindsey puts up little resistance as Mackenziecontinues to push Lindsey’s down against the bed, their back hitting themattress as she reaches Lindsey’s face. “Ahh,” Lindsey yells, as a drop of ice creamfalls onto their face dropping the treat out of instinct. Mackenzie smiles, “Yeah. I… I….” Mackenzietrails over looking at Lindsey’s gorgeous features, the smile covering theirface, the feeling of happiness in her chest that she couldn’t explain when itdawned on her. The L word that Lindsey had used earlier, that feeling in hergut made sense. She loves them.

“Are you okay? I’m sorry about the ice cream-”

“Ithink I’m in love with you and I don’t know what to do anymore.” The words leave Mackenzie’s lips gently and softly, as though she wantedto take them back. “I just need to tell you before the elimination tomorrow, Idon’t know if it’s really us in the top two.”

“It will be.” Lindsey takes Mackenzie’s hand,“And I’ll have you know, I know I’m in love with you.” Mackenzie grins, herface warm from the interaction before meeting Lindsey’s own in a passionatedriven kiss, her hands cupping Lindsey’s face, smoothing her fingers againsttheir skin. They meld into one as Mackenzie kisses around Lindsey’s face makingthem giggle with laughter underneath them, the snacks are long forgotten in theirintimacy.

Dancing with the Stars Season 27 Week 4: It’s Time to Dr-Dr-Dr-Dr Dr-dr-dr-dr-Drag

That’s a Yu-Gi-Oh! reference in case you were wondering. Anyway, I’m going to get through this quickly and get to the real reason why I wanted to get this up tonight. I should also say that having the trio round be this early was not a good idea. It also might have been better if they had chosen celebs that were more available. Also, picking outside celebs only really worked in one couple’s case. But yeah. Let’s just go.

Juan Pablo, Cheryl and Melissa R.- Cha-cha (Score=24)- The song for this was not good. I mean the dance was alright, but nothing special. I saw mistakes from Melissa and JP. And Cheryl really didn’t seem all that into it.

Tinashe, Brandon and Amy- Tango (Score=26)- I really enjoyed this dance. I’m sad that this is going to be their last dance though. I thought Brandon’s choreography was really good. This dance showed just how much potential he has to be a very creative and innovative choreographer. Tinashe was fantastic. To be honest, I thought she was slightly underscored. And Amy was great too.

John, Emma and Joey- Argentine Tango (Score=21)- This was a good dance after the first part with the botched lift. I thought it was underscored though. I would have given it at least two 8s. John and Joey handled it extremely well. And Emma is a brilliant choreographer. 

Evanna, Keo and Scarlett- Salsa (Score=24)- This was the only dance that I thought that the outside celeb worked. Evanna worked it out and Scarlett was actually pretty good for the most part. I liked the choreo and thought the balance was just right. There were fast moves but there were also moments where they could breathe, feel the dance and really live in the moment.

DeMarcus, Lindsay and Rashad- Paso Doble (Score=22)- This was a ridiculous score for this dance. In no way should this have been less than a 24. These judges are really working hard to keep DeMarcus down and I’m worried that it may actually backfire like it already has this season. All it was lacking was refinement. And that was clear because Rashad is so refined that it made DeMarcus come off as almost wild. That’s it.

Mary Lou, Sasha and Nastia- Charleston (Score=26)- It was nice seeing Nastia in the ballroom again. Charleston is her dance. Now I thought this was good. But was it 26 worthy? Ehhhh. I could see a 25 at the most. It wasn’t bad. Just not as good as the judges were making it out to be.

Milo, Witney and Riker- Salsa (Score=29)- This was a showstopper and should have been a perfect score. But of course Len had to spoil it. Of course. Even though Juan Pablo got an undeserved standing ovation from him last week. Moving on.

Joe, Jenna and Jordan- Salsa (Score=15)- What an awful dance. It was the worst trio that we’ve ever seen and may have been one of the worst dances in all of DWTS history in my opinion. They should have gotten no higher than a 12. It was cringey, neither one could dance, Jenna looks like she is crying out for help and yet y’all won’t put her out of her misery and stop voting for this dude that don’t even wanna be there. Please, just let him go. Please. This is getting difficult to watch at this point.

Alexis, Alan and Maddie- Tango (Score=25)- This outside celeb didn’t really work well either. Maddie is such a great dancer and putting her up with Alexis showed just how soft Alexis moves. It didn’t come together well. It looked like if you were to take Sabrina Bryan dancing at her hardest and put her next to Melissa Rycroft dancing at her softest. It just doesn’t work.

Bobby, Sharna and Lindsey- Cha-cha (Score=20)- This wasn’t all that great. The performance was high energy but the actual technique was terrible. I’m sick of Bobby acting half his age. He’s 38. But he acts like an immature 19 year old. Heck, Milo is mature than him. And Milo is still a minor. But I truly am sick of him. Truly.

So yeah. We move on to the end and Evanna and Keo and Tinashe and Brandon were put in jeopardy. And as we all know, Tinashe and Brandon were sent packing. Yeah I’m upset. I’m even shocked. The last time I was this genuinely shocked because of an elimination on this show was never. Tinashe wasn’t even in the bottom 6 the first week. What happened to all of those votes? Why did y’all drop off that much? I can’t even drag anyone else before I start with the fans. That is ridiculous. The fandom knows that this is possible. We’ve seen it happen. And I, along with countless other bloggers, always tell y’all stuff like this happens when you get complacent and you don’t vote. So I’m extremely disappointed in you all. If you didn’t vote for her and you had the ability to, you don’t get to complain about this result. You contributed to it.

Next, Tinashe stans suck. Y’all just refuse to be there for ya girl. Or maybe Tinashe’s fanbase isn’t as large as they act like it is. Regardless, her stans oughta be ashamed. You didn’t even have to buy an album this time around. You just had to pick up a phone and dial a number and make a bunch of email accounts and go vote on ABC.com all night. Y’all couldn’t even do that. What good are stans if you can’t even get your fave past the halfway mark of a reality show competition. Get it together. Tinashe deserves better.

I am so sick of having to beg the Bachelor fans to let their faves go out when they see that they don’t like the show. You all are weird. There’s been at least three bachelors that very clearly wanted to go home and they literally put their pros through hell. You can see it on those ladies’ faces. They just want the season to end so that they can be put out of their misery. And you fans just love to torture both of them and the rest of the viewers just so you can get a kick out of your fave dancing badly. Stop it. I usually don’t shame people for voting for who they want to, if the person wants to be there. But they don’t. Both are over it. So let them be. Please. We’re all begging you.

As far as everything else, I’m going to make another post. I told one of you that I was observing things regarding Tinashe and Brandon. I thought they would be on longer, so I wasn’t prepared to make this so soon. But since we’re here, I guess I’m going to have to make a post tackling how race and gender affected these two this season. There, I will talk about the show as a whole and how the judges reacted to them and how that more than likely added to this situation. And I have a lot to say. Especially about Len.

Just For You Song Analysis

'For You' has the most beautiful instrumentals in their discography. There's a perfect balance b/w organic instruments & synths. The synths are placed so subtly, it feels organic. The instrumental can stand on its own. It's that beautiful.

~ There's a lot of instruments used in this song but it doesn't make you feel overwhelmed. You'll never think that the bgm is 'too much' for the song. #HANBIN always had a way of making fluidity in music seem so natural. He knows when to pull back and when to give. ~ I'm in love with the guitar in this song. It's an influential presence that makes you feel at ease. In contrast, the beats at the beginning entices you to listen. It strikes curiosity. But when the guitar comes in along with #JUNHOE's voice, it hits you emotionally. ~ The line allocation is spot on. The lyrical context matches the vocal tones of the singers in each line. #BOBBY's vocal tone have always had a feel of desperation & regret. His raspy voice was utilized to convey the feeling of wanting to do better for someone but not having the capability to do so. #BOBBY's voice in this song almost reminds me of vocal breaks when you try to talk after you cry too much. But the way he sang his last line, the melody fills you with hope. ~ When #JUNHOE enters, the bgm was stripped back to nothing but the guitar at the forefront. With his soft full vocal, he fills your ears with promises. And you believe it because his adamant sincerity comes from nothing but his voice alone. No distractions. ~ When #DONGHYUK enters with his falsetto, I thank all that is holy that he now embraces his voice. Donghyuk's voice is like a hug. When he sustains a note, it's so pitch perfect that at some point in his part, his voice could pass as the strings in the bgm. 😭😭😭

~ When #JINHWAN enters, the beats at the beginning of the song were used again. Which is effective because it brings you back to the vibe initially proposed in the song; the feelings of regret for promises not kept can be felt in Jinani's intonation and enunciation.  However, the uncertainty portrayed in the lyrics was filled with optimism with the way #JINHWAN sang his lines. But the self-doubt that come along with promises, was not erased yet.

I love #HANBIN's vocals. I love that he didn't rap. I'm so tired of emotional songs in kpop where they add raps that doesn't fit in the song at all. Adding an unneeded ingredient can break the recipe. Hanbin chose to stay true to the song and sang. And he did it good.

~

The way #HANBIN sang isn't pretentious. It's almost as if he's talking. But the way he hits high notes is almost like a caress that gently fades out. His voice has a certain fondness in it. If #June sang this part with stubborn promises, Hanbin sang his w/ dedicated perseverance.

~

At #YUNHYEONG's part, the vibe becomes more positive. His voice perfectly reflects the line 'you're my light in this never-ending darkness.' This is because his clear vocal tone was sustained the entire time. It isn't airy or raspy. It's literally like a light that floats around.

~

#CHANWOO's part is an intake of breath in this song. His vocals are placed at the break down because his cool tone is perfect for slow and low melodic progression. It is a perfect breathing and emotional break before the climax/ending.

~

But at the same time, you just want to keep hearing it. #CHANWOO's tone is similar to a breeze. Once you stop hearing his voice, you long for it. Much like his line, '...long for that carefree day.'

~

When #JINHWAN ends the song, though the lyrics are similar, it provides a different feel. In contrast to the uncertain promises at the beginning of the song, this time around, the lyrics were portrayed with determination. It almost feel like that the singer himself now believes the words he is singing. It is no longer a casual promise. It now becomes a commitment. That emotional development within the song was supported by an equally moving bgm. It's so beautiful, it gave me the chills. #FORYOU is my fave fansong to date.

The musical background, imo, is a masterpiece on its own. But the vocals itself wasn't overshadowed. In fact, the vocals effectively bring all the essential emotional input that makes this song a fansong.

I don't think people realizes how big of a deal it is for an artist to release a song that is free. Remember that #iKON use music to earn a living. When they released this song for free, it isn't monetized. They get nothing from this.

And yet here we are, #iKONICS, enjoying a well made masterpiece without a hit to our wallets. The question that only remains after all these is that, how is it possible to have an ounce of hate towards this boys? HOW? TELL ME. #iKON is just a bunch of mischievous angels.

I don’t remember exactly, but it was sometime when either season 4 or 5 were currently airing? My mom got super into it and she started watching it every day so I’d catch bits and pieces of it until I finally decided to watch it from the beginning. I caught up just before season 6 started and I’ve been watching the new eps with my mom ever since.

Probably 1 or 2? I feel like the writers decided episodic monsters of the week wouldn’t keep viewers interested forever so they kept one-upping their big bads with even bigger bads and that started to get ridiculous after season 5. Then again you can’t really top Lucifer without getting ridiculous c’:

I still enjoy the newer seasons (some more than others) but I do miss how simple things were back in S1-2.

10. What’s your least favorite season?

I...wasn’t a huge fan of God’s evil sister or her having some “connection” with Dean so that whole season kind of bugged me ;;

It’s probably my favorite ship but it’s also a huge reason why I stayed away from the fandom and feel nervous reblogging Supernatural stuff on my personal blog. The fandom is too obsessed with it and I don’t want people to think I’m one of the toxic fans just because I ship it ;;

And honestly I love Dean and Cas as a familial ship too because those are super important and shouldn’t be treated as “less” than romantic ships.

Maybe? I think they definitely throw in jokes or teases but I’m not sure I’d go as far to call it queerbaiting. It does bug me they killed Charlie but they kill practically everyone so?

I feel this isn’t a fair question because the trauma they go through is completely different. 

Dean had to deal with his dad selling his soul for him, with being told he might have to kill his brother, and with being tortured in hell for years. 

But Sam had to deal with the fact he never really got to apologize to his dad before he died, with being told he had demon blood and that his own brother was thinking of the possibility of having to kill him, with being the reason their mother died, and dealing with the pressure of taking control over Lucifer just so he could drag Lucifer down into hell with him.

If I HAD to pick one I’d probably say Dean, just because I recently rewatched the S5 finale and that look of utter despair and hopelessness on Dean’s face when he thinks Sam lost to Lucifer and that he lost his brother and the world was going to end killed me, but I think both of their trauma is pretty equal. 

17. What’s your favorite Supernatural episode?

I think I’d have to go with the one where Dean gets ghost sickness and ends up terrified of everything.

I wanna say Adam, but I have to go with Bobby because as great as AU Bobby is, he’s not the same and doesn’t have the same bond with Sam and Dean that their Bobby had ;;

Captain Swan was like the cheap rip-off of Rumbelle. So how did they make their cheap, gross, and shallow pretty boy rip-off of Rumbelle look better than the far superior, deeply beautiful, and complex original couple? Systematically destroying every element of both halves of the deeply beautiful, emotionally complex, and unique original Rumbelle and kill off Neal to vilify Rumple to make their cheap, shallow, and gross rip-off look better by comparison, which they failed to do, anyway…It’s a sure fire way to win tons of viewers, and not piss off a huge portion of your original GA! It’s not like most of them weren’t majorly emotionally invested in Rumple’s story with Belle and Neal…*I’m being sarcastic, btw, in case that wasn’t already obvious...*

Ffs…I really came to hate this show, I’m glad I quit watching after S5 because I read spoilers that it only got worse for Rumbelle with the OOC toxic clusterfuck of the utter systematic character destruction of both Rumple and Belle as individual characters and a couple, which they used the Rumbaby to create for “fun” for A&E and these writers to make CS look better after they made them a romanticized abusive relationship in 5A, and lost half their audience by making Hook the Gary Stu of the show who everyone else got screwed over for at the last minute.

I was worried they would screw over Rumbelle in a way that finally went too far for people to just realistically reconcile after what they did to CS in 5A, and it looks like I was right from the spoilers I read for 6A…Because it’s not like A&E and these writers weren’t already systematically destroying both halves of Rumbelle enough as it already was to prop up Hook/CS when they killed off Neal. It’s not like it wasn’t already bad enough when they started all the Rumbelle drama with the fake dagger proposal, the magic hat, the lies, and the banishment that never was apologized for because it was framed as “girl power” for Belle to “put the beast in his place.” It’s not like it wasn’t already bad enough with Belle’s bizarre OOC newcharacterization of being back-and-forth with Rumple, being cowardly, hypocritical, stupid, unnecessarily cruel, controlling, insensitive, and lacking in empathy with Rumple, refusing to let him get a word in edgewise, even when he tried to reach out to her gently and honestly for her understanding and compassion, and even when he did nothing wrong, while she let Hook, Regina, and Zelena get away with using her to hurt Rumple and trusted and forgave all of them for hurting her and her true love because the narrative “needed” to vilify Rumple. It’s not like it wasn’t already bad enough when Rumple took back the curse because he claimed that “It’s the man that he was,” and “I like the darkness.”

This shit in 6A, though. This shit was just too fucking stupid and OOC to believe.

The unborn Rumbaby being a full grown adult God of Dreams with a fully formed personality and opinions in Belle’s subconscious, who she actually believes immediately without question for no damn reason when he tells her that “Rumple will destroy the family?”

BULLSHIT!

Belle talking about how she’d rather stay in a sleeping curse with her unborn child to avoid Rumple forever based off of what a dream said for no fucking reason, even before Rumple starts screwing up?

BULLSHIT!!

Belle staying on Hook’s ship, and talking to him and Snow about how she spent too long trying to make things work with Rumple, even before Rumple starts doing anything wrong in the arc, even though the writers have conveniently ignored the fact that Belle has an apartment above the library that Rumple gave her, even though she’s perfectly a-ok forgiving and trusting the man who tried to kill her four times to piss off Rumple, even though Hook’s “apology” for attempting to murder her has come too late in the series and he openly admits to letting her stay on his ship is something that he openly admits to doing to piss off Rumple when the worst that Rumple has done to her at this point in the series was keep her in the dark about his shady schemes in S4?

Rumple having a Dark One 2.0 2007 Britney Spears style mental breakdown mid-life crisis when he cuts his hair because he doesn’t like the man he sees in the mirror, so he starts acting like a controlling, and potentially dangerous blindly insane dick to Bellle of nowhere?

BULLSHIT!!!!

Like, I could understand it if this bizzarely problematic shift in Rumple’s attitude had an organic lead up without all the stupid magical plot contrivances and twists that come out of the blue, and the breaking of preestablished rules used to force him to that extreme. I could understand it if Belle didn’t “have” to be made uncharacteristically, unnecessarily, and overdramatically cruel, cowardly, stupid, and hypocritical to push him over the edge. I could understand if these writers understood realistic human psychology, trauma, mental illnesses, consistent characterization, and they didn’t destroy or sideline other characters/ships to prop up their faves.

But on this show where I had barely survived through the pain that was S4 and S5 of Rumple’s being framed as an OOC one note stereotypical villain badly enough as it already was to prop up Hook/CS, Regina, and Zelena onto pedestals that they didn’t deserve by ignoring all of the trauma, loss, and grief he had endured, and the near erasure of his fantastic character development and selfless sacrifice from S1-3A? I didn’t want to see them try to portray Rumple’s self-destructive addict tendencies a third time around because he was a “difficult man to love” because A&E and these writers did not want, and/or did not know how to portray mental illness and trauma in Rumple’s character consistently, organically, sympathetically, and realistically.

They usually just ignored all that complexity in his character to frame him as a one note villain to the other characters and the audience, and refused to let them be sympathetic or understanding of him until he had finally come to the brink when it was finally convenient for Belle to actually hear him out, listen, understand why after she had refused to do so for most of the arc to push him over the edge, and he responded with some variation of “Who could ever love me,” which was always tragic with Bobby’s acting. But it was getting repetitive now because Belle should have understood this fact about Rumple after 4A in 6A, Rumple should have known that trying to fix things with magic without Belle’s consent would only make things worse in 6A after 4A, and both of them should have been smart enough to sit back and think about how ridiculous this shit with the dream zygote was. So I did not want to see a third round of character assassination one more time around at all an all time low where both he and Belle were being pitted against each other at incredibly OOC, illogical, and gross low point as enemies in this stupid magical custody battle clusterfuck over an unborn baby who somehow had the power to be the God of Dreams, orchestrate his own kidnapping, and dupe both of his intelligent parents after getting duped by the Black Fairy before he was even fucking born, especially when I knew I had seen a variation of this same plot done before in 4A. While that didn’t make total sense either, it didn’t feel so incredibly cheap, contrived, painful, unbelievable, and stupid as this shit in 6A did with all of the trauma that Rumple had been through in the context in 3B, even if it wasn’t that well written, or sympathetic in the narrative from his POV, either

Golden Queen “romance?”

BULLSHIT!!!!!

I mean, the retcons in the flashbacks were incredibly OOC for both Rumple and Regina. In the present day storyline context, it was wildly OOC for the EQ to sexually assault Rumple twice, and have a crush on him that she never seemed to before. As for Rumple giving into her advances, playing along with her, and using her to kill Zelena for him after those two kisses that she forced on him in the present day storyline? I mean, he flinched back from those two kisses, and we know he was sexually abused by Zelena for a whole year, so I could buy that he would emotionally manipulate the EQ to kill Zelena for him with his sexuality because he wanted the shears, and because he didn’t want to be seen as weak through their whole deal, so he used the darkness to cover up his vulnerabilities. I could see if it really “meant nothing,” and he had absolutely no intention of honoring his end of that indirectly implied deal he made with EQ to bang her in return for killing Zelena for him that he offered, he had absolutely no genuine romantic or sexual interest or intentions with her either way, and this was all just a horribly self-destructive, gross, and unethical way to survive his PTSD for as long he “needed” to do it in their deal. And that’s definitely my headcanon.

Unfortunately, A&E and these writers tried to do everything in their power to demonize Rumple throughout that whole thing with the EQ by shrouding his POV. Rumple’s PTSD being triggered by the EQ and Zelena isn’t an excuse for playing her, of course, but the writers literally forgot about the fact that she sexually assaulted him twice first, and then deliberately cut that scene where he ran into Zelena at Granny’s right before that scene in 6x07 where she walked in on them making out, which would have implied that Rumple had been planning on doing this whole time since the end of 6x04 when she forced that kiss on him, and was very likely expecting her to walk in on him and the EQ when they were making out in 6x07. But Bobby looked highly uncomfortable and dead inside when he was making out with Lana in those scenes, he fought Eddy against the whole GQ storyline, and he knows Rumple’s character better than A&E and their team of hacks do, so I took his interpretation in his acting as Rumple in those scenes to heart way more than whatever the fuck A&E and these writers were trying to imply in their piss poor excuse for writing on a dying show that should have ended three-and-a-half seasons before it ever had the chance to make it to this tragically pitiful and nearly laughable hollowed out shell of the fantastic show with well-written complex characters that it used to be once upon a time (pun intended).

Like I said, I hate this show, or at least the show that it became after “Going Home,” and Nealfire’s death…

I also don’t respect A&E and these writers anymore for how abruptly, cruelly, and deliberately they mistreated Rumple, Belle, Rumbelle, Neal, Emma, and Henry’s characters, stories, relationships, and fans in the writing after “Going Home,” so that Eddy Kitsis and these writers could have their love affair with Hook/CS and Zelena!

I still ship Rumbelle from S1-S3, and I still ship them in fanon where the writing for them, whether it be angsty, romantic, tragic, or bittersweet, is always sympathetically in-character, consistent, emotionally complex, organic, realistic, healthy, well-written, and well-earned.

But I’m glad I quit watching this show after S5 because it became clear that they were systematically destroying both halves of Rumbelle out of spite to prop up Hook/CS, and I didn’t need to see that shit anymore. It wasn’t good for my mental health, and I’m honestly regretting that I ever even read the recaps and spoilers for 6A on tumblr.

As far as I’m concerned, the real show ended with “Going Home” because that was the last time I fully recognized my favorite characters/otp, the last time I was mostly satisfied with everyone from season one’s character development, and the last time that any of the writing on this show made any sort of consistent, meaningful, and realistic sense before becoming a cheesy, stupid, and toxic romantic magical soap opera Drama™️ fanfic rewrite centered around Hook/CS as the lead character/couple with no continuity, no depth, no organic original growth, and no character or storytelling integrity.

Belle being needlessly cruel by telling Rumple that he is “worse than evil,” and “being too weak to be good” for being afraid to fail their son as a father when she knows Neal died not that long ago?

BULLSHIT!!!!!! She had every right to be angry at him for not telling her right away about plotting to use the shears on their son without her consent, and for handing off dark magical macguffins to the EQ, but twisting his words, and using his fears against him by being mean? That’s not Belle.

Belle attempting to kidnap the unborn baby with Zelena’s help, and gloating over to Rumple angrily about how she and his abuser and the murderer of his first son were “alike,” while mocking him about how she was almost “free” when he caught her, and stopped her in 6x08?

BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!

And yes, it would have been attempted kidnapping in this instance in real life that she would have been arrested for in this episode because the only evidence she had that Rumple was a serious “danger” to their unborn child with the shears at this point, and that he was having an “affair” with the EQ was all hearsay from Zelena. Zelena was not a reliable source to Rumple’s motives with the shears, or Rumple’s true intentions with the EQ. She didn’t actually know whether Rumple actually was planning to bang her or not, and I really don’t think he ever was because he told Belle that it meant nothing, anyway, and swatted away the EQ like a fly as soon as she broke their deal by hurting Belle, and didn’t kill Zelena for him.

Rumple threatening to speed up Belle’s pregnancy recklessly in a dissociative panic when she already had that fucking cuff on her wrist, and wasn’t going anywhere because he was so obsessed with these stupid shears?

BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know a lot of people who watched said that it was strongly implied that Rumple was, even subconsciously, trying to deescalate himself by warning Belle to come back to him before doing it ahead of time, and showing her the aging dust in that little bottle in his hand when he terrorized her in the library with the threat to do it before calling him out, and talking him down. I do believe that the writer of this episode was trying to imply to the audience that Rumple was looking for a “no” from Belle, even subconsciously, because he didn’t know how else to descalate himself, and I do believe that. However, it still was a wildly OOC nearly unforgivable extreme that they forced him to, so they could bring this story to the unnecessary brink of past the point of no return for Rumple and Belle ever reconciling again for absolutely no reason, other than to give Belle a reason to genuinely be afraid and distrustful enough of him to give up their baby to the Black Fairy (in disguise as Blue) to give him his “best chance.”

It’s just like how Belle didn’t actually “need” to attempt to kidnap their unborn child in the episode before this, or how Belle didn’t “need” to banish Rumple across the town line with nothing. It’s just like how it didn’t make any sense for Rumple to try to give Belle the dagger at all, considering how terrified he was of being controlled again. I could see if his heart had started blackening before he left for New York, and the dagger was his veiled plea for her to help him fight the darkness because he couldn’t tell her the truth with his heart being consumed by the curse, but they never made that explicitly clear in the narrative and they ruined most credibility in that when they had him take the curse back because “it was the man that he was.” It’s just like how Belle’s back-and-forthedness with Rumple in S5 made no sense. It’s just like how Belle agreeing to take Rumple’s car and go see the world in a middle of a crisis in town after proclaiming “A hero never runs away” two episodes a day earlier in the timeline before, just because she was having relationship doubts. These writers forced their characters into OOC directions and extremes that weren’t actually necessary, just so they could fulfill their (oftentimes character assassinating and disappointing) plot twists, especially with Rumple and Belle post 3A, and I was finally fed up with it by 6A, even though I didn’t watch any of that clusterfuck.

The Rumbaby being the villain of the week under the hood after being duped by the Black Fairy to dupe his parents to turn against each other, so that he could orchestrate his kidnapping from them at birth before he was even fucking born because Rumple using the shears on him would have prevented this shit from happening?

Adam and Eddy claiming that all this systematic character destruction of every element in Rumple and Belle’s individual characters and relationship together was “fun” and “hopeful,” and that they had been planning this storyline with the Black Fairy for a long time now, even though we all knew by now that they had no sense of self-awareness or ability to learn from their bad writing choices, every Dearie/Rumbelle fanfic writer was writing stories for the characters and relationship that they created a billion times better than they ever could imagine for free on ao3 and ff.net than the vile garbage these piss poor excuses for professional writers and show-runners were still getting paid to spew after they ran out of ideas on their after 3A and shit on Rumbelle deliberately to prop up their faves, and most people planned ahead more thoughtfully for their graduation speeches, what to wear on a date, and school projects than these hacks spent on their now dead trash show?

BULLSHIT!!!!!!!!! At this point, I was just laughing bitterly at them still taking themselves as such “genius” storytellers. I wasn’t even blaming the characters for being this wildly OOC and badly written anymore because it wasn’t really even worth it anymore when A&E and these writers fucked them up for their stupid sensationalist plots, CS pandering, and inability to stick to any sort of consistent realistic characterization, development, timeline, rules, or storytelling integrity, let alone even trying to tell any story with any sort of deeper purpose or meaning at all at this point, anyway. This show was just a cash grab for them at this point for Disney product placement, and Hook/CS.

so I finally caught up with Supernatural seasons 12 & 13 bc I’ve been hearing so many good things and BOI AM I REALLY HAPPY AND ANGRY AT THE SAME TIME. They brought back so many faves! Gabe, Charlie!!!, Bobby, Kevin (even though they fucked up but whatever) and they introduced Jack who literally became my favorite within two seconds of screen time like wow what a precious boy I’d die for him. Now don’t get me wrong, I’ve always loved SPN but seasons 8-11 were pretty forgettable tbh. But the whole vibe of these new seasons has been fantastic, they brought back the comedy and the amazing/heartbreaking stories that we love this show for. So i’m most definitely gonna be doing some writing/imagines about these newest storylines because I’m just so excited. (lowkey wish they’d bring back ellen/jo but whatever) it’s just so nice to see these familiar faces even if they’re not exactly the people we knew years ago. So yeah, here are just a few thoughts about my reawakening of love for SPN because I thought i’d finally grown tired of it but here they go dragging me right back in. Didn’t want to make this too long so here’s just a few things I really really enjoyed seeing from these last two seasons:

Bringing back Characters who deserved better: Charlie, Bobby, Kevin, and Gabriel (the last two still deserve better)

Addressing the problem with Mary being alive again and how that changes the Winchester dynamic

That scene at the end of season 12 where Dean tells Mary what him and Sam had to go through because of her, that acting made me sob like never before

Monster of the week again, at least for a little

lighthearted episodes ! the scooby-doo crossover was absolutely fucking hilarious and they made the absurdness of it work

Gabriel confronting Lucifer, FINALLY about his whole ‘dad locked me up’ thing like you were the bad guy Lucifer, you need to own up to your bullshit

And Gabriel in general?? just wow I missed you bitch

Gabe x Rowena was HILARIOUS

JACK! I cannot say enough about how much I loved this character like what a breath of fresh air to have a new character that is so complicated and so relatable and so pure!

His relationship with all of the boys, but especially Sam was heartwarming 

Up until 13x23 the lack of either boy being possessed by demon/god/angel etc. for once like wow thx 

Mary getting a storyline outside of being the boy’s dead mom and really become her own person, I was really annoyed with her but now I understand her and i love her 

I missed the original Lucifer so having Mark back was a treat, he really does the role justice and I’m sad to see him go and throughout the season the way he makes the audience really sympathize with him despite knowing how terrible he is,,,,like wow,,,,What a man

Dean and Castiel’s little spats throughout these seasons were adorable like i’m not a huge fan of destiel but,,,,,yall they’re married

and lastly (for now) the whole aspect of family and how much team free will loves each other was delightful to see on screen and I hope we get more of that next season

i wish so much that naomi and holden could have actually retired and been happy, if anyone deserves it it’s those two

Captain Bobbie Draper is everything i didn’t realize i wanted until holden was talking about it. I’m really gald she did get a ship in the end, even if it wasn’t the Roci

Amos��� singular chapter was so good, one of my faves tbh. The fight with him and bobbie was good and the fact that she WINS was perfect.

I cannot WAIT to see how his dynamic with Bobbie evolves, the fact that she will actually make him deal with his shit where no one else ever really has is just perfect

I do wish the writers would spend more time with alex and his emotions. i did like how they acknowledged that he held the crew together in a way

alright it’s gotta be talked about

Clarissa

i saw her death coming but that didn’t make it hurt less. I wish she would have died, not better because her death had the weight an impact it should have, but i wish amos could have been with her, that more of her family could have been with her.

speaking of clarissa and amos holy SHIT i wasn’t expecting their relationship to be exactly what i wanted but it happened

the fact that of all the crew it was naomi, the one clarissa nearly killed, that was with her when she died fucking BROKE me

Other characters

the fact that chrisjen is still alive and kicking was very important and such a nice surprise. I really want her to live through the series if only out of spite

i loved all the brief mentions of past characters, it was nice getting confirmations that they are okay

WHERE IS FILIP NAGATA. WHAT HAPPENED TO HIM

It’s been so long since i read CB that i don’t remember a lot of the protomolecule stuff but BOI. duarte might be the WORST but he needs to stop fucking around with this stuff. I genuinely wonder if we’re going to see the beings that killed the creators of the protomolecule

Structural stuff 

not going to lie reading this book felt like watching a disaster in slow motion, and that’s not a knock on the writing. it was that feeling of helplessness, knowing everything is going to go wrong but not being able to look away. i’ve never really had a book make me feel like that before

this one was absolutely a step up in quality again, not that i didn’t like BA but it was weak and PR imo was much better (still not the strongest book but that’s just because it was setting up the final arc of the series)

I made a post about it earlier but god acting like duarte’s theory about ideaolgically conquering a place would mean more stability is like, THE most obvious thing to any first year poli sci student. literally was a question on my intro politics class test in college. OF COURSE soft power is more effective if it can be pulled off, it doesn’t take a political genius to see that. it’s like boiling a frog, it won’t jump out if it doesn’t realize it’s dying.

this was honestly so important to me? like it’s clear they love each other but not really in a romantic way and as someone who is somewhere on the aro spectrum this meant so much.

The images from the seedpods could be the encrypted records of the fallen civilization that had built miracles they were still only beginning to understand . Or they could be the spores of whatever had killed them . Or they could be lava lamps . Who fucking knew ?

i nearly cried at this. drummer and her love for saba was so good, reminded me a lot of chrisjen and her husband tbh

It was always strange to remember that she knew things that other people didn’t . Not just about power - and signal - routing protocols . What it was like to murder someone who’d only ever been kind to you . How it felt when the people you’d dedicated your life to killing took you in as family . Even though she knew better , she always defaulted to the idea that her life wasn’t singular . That whatever she’d done must not have been that odd , because after all , she’d done it .

so this is where i started crying and pretty much just didn’t stop for the rest of the book. clarissa means so much to me

Some sins carried their own punishment . Sometimes redemption meant carrying the past with you forever . She’d gotten used to that over the years , but it was still pretty fucking inconvenient .

This is tied with holden’s thing for the best line in the book, so good
