this historically has been one of the more fallow categories, bc there is a level of background pain where it is quite difficult for me to read and viddy gaem is a better distraction.

could have sworn i read three cowboy novelizations this year but i can only find evidence that i read the sabata and red river novelizations. i have mixed feelings about the execution of Tom Lin's The Thousand Crimes of Ming Tsu and Silvia Moreno-Garcia's Gods of Jade and Shadow but do not regret reading either.

no particular comics or manga stand out in my fallible, forgettable brain this year. i am excited for the ongoing light novel and manga adaptation of Otherside Picnic but that's just from watching the anime

happy that letterboxd is doing part of the thing i wanted (getting me to watch more movies) deeply annoyed i have fallen into the trap i was afraid of. this trap is: I Want To Make The Number Go Up and am now reluctant to watch tv bc i can't log it on letterboxd and it doesn't "count". fucking hate to gamify my own leisure like this!!!!

the very good thing about letterboxd is that my friends have excellent taste, and letterboxd reminds me which of the eight billion django knockoffs i have and have not seen.

GOD was january a good movie month. the below screenshot is movies i watched for the first time this year and really liked/have stuck in my head in some way, and 3/8ths were from january. thank u library streaming service kanopy

see letterboxd has taken such a big chunk of my Moving Images time that it was hard to remember that both peaky blinders and killing eve ended this year!!! and i rewatched several seasons of adventure time! and most of the first season of DS9! and i am now in the process of watching the vampire interview show with my sister!!!

this year was mostly big open worlds that didn't require a lot of complex thought from me, or if they did require some puzzle solving it was in really short bursts. lion's share of the hours this year went to fallout 4, breath of the wild, and pokemon scarlet. i really loved junk shop telescope, depanneur nocturne, and card cowboy.

honorary mentions to phone games that kept my anxiety to a low simmer while in a lot of doctor's offices.

game im most hype for is probably the spooky fishing game Dredge, but i don’t think we’ll get that until early 2024. if anyone says the words "fallout 5" next year i will lose my mind bc i would like another one of these stupid motherfuckers before i die.

You already had your costume designs picked out in your head along with how you wanted your stage to look. Music was your life and even if you couldn't become a successful singer, you knew you still wanted to be in the music industry somehow.

But life turned out exactly how you wanted it to due to your hard work and dedication. You started by putting your music on SoundCloud, where you started to grow a fan base. You made music that so many people could relate to and you made people feel like they had a shoulder to cry on. Eventually, you were doing small concerts and interviews, just to get your name out there some more. And before you knew it, you were releasing your debut album and receiving award after award. From AMAs to Billboard, to iHeartRadio, you were on fire.

But you knew you were being heard worldwide when Harry Styles followed you back on Instagram. You had been following him ever since he was in One Direction, a group you held very dear to your heart. Your legs wanted to run to your car, hop in, speed all the way home, and just jump under the covers and forget you even existed. But the BRITs were coming up and you had to be on a plane later.

Walking down the red carpet was something you'd never get used to. That and paparazzi. You didn't like the bright lights and people yelling at you, telling you what to do. But you did love showing off your outfits.

You were wearing a strapless black gown that showed off the perfect amount of cleavage, and diamonds that decorated your ears and wrist. You were feeling confident and beautiful and your last encounter with Harry was pushed to the very back of your mind until you arrived at your seat.

Harry was already sitting in his spot at the table. He was wearing a light blue button-up that was covered by a purple wool cardigan but that too was topped off with his brown suit. He looked very handsome and now you were worried that maybe what you were wearing was quite basic.

But you didn't have time to turn around and run away, because he had spotted you and was pulling at his collar nervously. You gave him a soft smile and seated yourself, rubbing your sweaty palms in your dress.

"Hello, nice to you see you again," You greeted him.

Your heart was racing erratically and you were pleading to yourself not to fuck this up.

"The pleasure is all mine," He smiled and you felt the heat rise to your face. You figured it was the same heat that was adorning Harry's face also.

The conversation quickly ceased and you internally sighed, ready to tell your group chat what a failure you were. But you were back to being smiley and happy when a cameraman came over and asked for a picture of the two of you. Harry wrapped an arm around your waist and you leaned into his side with a big cheesy smile.

The show started and a producer came over to Harry mid-show, telling him he should get ready for his performance. He nodded, stood up, and pushed his seat in.

"Good luck," You bid him before he could walk away.

He beamed at you and nodded in appreciation before walking off to follow the producer backstage.

He came on stage in a completely different outfit. A white lacy button-up with matching trousers covered his body and was complemented with a pair of matching gloves.

You enjoyed the performance, especially the water on the stage, and you made sure you told him once he got back to the table. Now he was wearing a bright yellow suit and a purple shirt, completely hard to miss.

"Your performance was lovely," You told him once he sat down. "I liked the water bit."

"Thank you. You're up next, correct?" He asked and took a sip of his water that was untouched until now.

"Yeah, just a bit nervous," You admitted and gulped anxiously while standing up.

"Break a leg. Well, not actually. Do people even say that anymore-"

"It's okay, I get it," You giggled at his flustered demeanor. He was completely red and was playing with the rings on his fingers. "Thank you, Harry."

Your performance went swimmingly and soon you were back at your seat, anxious for the award you were nominated for.

Apparently, it was noticeable how nervous you were because Harry hesitantly reached over and rested a hand on yours.

"If they don't think you're the best International Solo Female Artist, then screw 'em. I think you're the best," He assured you, making your nerves cease.

Before he could respond, your name had been called, making you face the stage with wide eyes. He rubbed your hand before pulling back and clapping along with the rest of the crowd.

You told from your seat and walked over the stage, not quite sure how you got there because everything seemed like a daze. But it became real when the award was placed in your hand and you had to give your speech.

"I am... in awe, truly. I am so happy and grateful. This album was absolutely life-changing for me and I hope it was for those who gave it a listen. I really cannot believe I'm here right now. Thank you so much to everyone who's been supporting me. I would like to thank my family and my team for all their love and support. And before I go, I'd like to thank Harry Styles who actually has been a huge inspiration of mine and he's so sweet and was literally just soothing my nerves. You watched Harry's face turn bright as he smiled up at you and turned red for the thousandth time since you've met him.

You walked backstage and let out a sigh of relief once you got away from all the cameras. It wasn't as nerve-racking as you thought it would be but maybe it was because Harry gave you a pep talk before your speech.

You were far too exhausted to be at the after-party but you already sent in an RSVP. You were wearing black leather pants with a matching halter crop top and basic black heels.

Harry's apartment is almost exactly how you expected it to be. It was organized and clean, everything about it seemed untouched and perfect but it still had a homey feeling to it. It still invited you in and asked you to stay awhile. It was so welcoming, you forgot about how you and Harry going home together was going to be plastered all over the blogs.

"This is really nice," You expressed as you looked at the little aloe plant on his coffee table.

"Oh thanks, my mum got it for me. Thought it'd teach me some responsibility and it hasn't died yet so," He spoke with humor and let out a soft chuckle at the end.

You grinned and watched as he walked over to his record player, an old brown wooden one from the 90s. He took am album from his shelf where it looked like he had been collecting all his life and took the record from the sleeve. He gently placed it down and set the needle on the record, smiling as “Never Dreamed You'd Leave In Summer” floated gracefully throughout the room.

"This is one of my favorite songs," You hummed as you listened.

You still didn't know how your friend managed to get you into this fan meeting, but now that you were here and staring at the faces of the seven boys that you used to admire from afar, you couldn't care less anymore.

Kim Namjoon: ˚✧₊⁎

Namjoon always is aware of things, when someone close to him has a bad day Namjoon is one of the first people to say something to them. So when you do have one of those bad days he still gets nervous.

Bothering you made him afraid and you seemed so isolating and scary sometimes when you had those bad days but Namjoon knew you were just vulnerable. He would check on you by looking, between writing or cooking he would pop his head out seeing if you were still sad or doing worse.

He had a tough time sometimes reading you, seeing you lay on the couch staring at the blank ceiling and other times you would try one of your hobbies but grunt in frustration because they didn’t give you that spark anymore. It was eating you alive whatever was wrong, it had you in its grip almost like it was controlling you.

‘I should do something. Just do anything.’ Namjoon thinks when he sees that giving you personal space was not the solution to your problem. It wasn’t making you feel better it made you feel alone, that Namjoon was getting tired of these sad days you had.

“Hey... muffin are you okay?” Namjoon says siting next to you on the couch. Smiling that he is talking to you, that he wants to listen.

“I’m here for you. Anytime you want to talk, just know that you’re so amazing. So wonderful that it blows my mind that I wake up and be with you. That fate gave me something I never want to lose.” Namjoon looks up to you seeing his eyes glistening, smiling.

Kim Seokjin: ˚✧₊⁎

Seokjin can be serious sometimes but he always finds that comedy is the best medicine if you do it right. Other times people can just be insensitive or try to pull something from their ass to make someone feel better but Seokjin knows you. He understand you more than any other person.

Bringing up memories was one of the many fun ways to bring some joy. Remind you of the good times, and get a nice walk through memory lane. So Seokjin made a box really it was just a shoe box from one of his personal buys. The box was filled of photos to tickets. Even has his own little photo album on his phone.

“Look I even got a screenshot of you thirsting over me.” Seokjin shows you the photo, you noticed that the photo had hearts all over it. They were drawn on the day he screenshotted before you two even started dating. It couldn’t help but get a giggle out of you.

“You’re the one that slid into my dms. Where’s that screenshot?” You ask leaning on his shoulder. Seokjin laughs resting his head on yours. Sliding through the photos of the awkward flirting and the more awkward first couple dates.

“Did you get the photo of when you told me you were an idol? My face was priceless.”

“I did. It’s actually my contact photo for you.” Seokjin snickers seeing you raise your head him showing you it’s true. That every time you call him your shocked face will cover his entire screen. Great.

Min Yoongi: ˚✧₊⁎

Yoongi knows how it is when your mind decides to attack you. How scary it feels when it feels like your own brain and thoughts are against you. He does everything just to make sure you know you don’t have to go through this alone.

Letting you get rest or joins you in your own little hobbies. He supported you and was there every step of the way. Yoongi was so real, he told you how it was and gave you talks of how he used to and still handles these thoughts.

You two usually get take out from both of you being too sleepy to cook, wouldn’t want the house to catch on fire but today was different. Yoongi bought the ingredients of one of your favorite dishes.

From your recent nap you stood up wrapping the blanket around you seeing him cooking. Yoongi mutiltasking of the many things, smoothie on one side of the kitchen while the other he's cooking that delicious meal you crave almost everyday.

“Hun can you set up the plates?” Yoongi asks seeing the meal was almost ready to serve. You smiled giving him a kiss on the cheek grabbing the plates, you were honestly blessed and Yoongi made sure you knew you were loved by him and many.

Eating with him was nice, he asked how you were. If you needed anything and the answer was always “You’re all I need.”

Jung Hoseok: ˚✧₊⁎

Hoseok knows how hard it is to keep the smiling face. How many times you felt like giving in and just having a mental breakdown right then and there but you never did, you always kept that strong face on.

Stern you were, beyond a wildest dream. Hoseok one night comes home a little more late. You were used to it of course because of his career and you never asked him to change his dream for you. You never planned to.

When Hoseok walks pass the living room, setting his bag on the couch dragging his feet across the hallway to the bedroom wanting to cuddle against you. Opening the door he suddenly stopped in his tracks the sounds of crying was heard.

“Oh no honey.” Hoseok pleads out getting to your side immediately, you trying to clean your face before looking at him. He wips the new tears coming down your face.

“What is wrong?” Hoseok asks you turning your body to him, laughing a little because he still has his work clothes on.

“Just dumb brain feelings.” You whisper out your voice croaky due to the crying. Hoseok places your head into his chest reaching for his phone. He made a playlist just these occasions, where your brain decides to load a bunch of sad emotions on you.

“I’ll be with you forever.” Hoseok whispers closing his eyes enjoying your heartbeats start to beat together.

Park Jimin: ˚✧₊⁎

Jimin is compassionate, so he always puts you first. Never in a second of his life that he would think of leaving you alone when you needed him the most. He always promised the company that he will know the choreography like the back of his hand when he comes back. Singing was taken care of because the sweetheart would always sing to you.

“Is it one of those days?” Jimin asks when you weren’t eating. The warning signs of the soon coming storm of thoughts.

Jimin got off the phone with his company giving you a bear hug. You felt bad that he takes time off for you but he always swore that it was no big deal, that armys would understand and the members would also. When you felt like just giving up just wanting to let your brain swallow you alive, you always looked at him. He never left you, not when you were the worst you’ve been or the mild cases.

“Just hold me.” You whisper at him and you staying in the same position for a while in the kitchen. Hearing his breathing at a calm pace made yours too. Jimin’s actions spoke volumes, that every time he said that he loves you. Jimin meant it with every fiber in his being, you being completely thankful.

“I love you. I love you. I love you.” Jimin repeats himself kissing your cheek seeing you start to form a small smile. That was progress, progress that you should be proud of.

Kim Taehyung: ˚✧₊⁎

Taehyung knew what to do, whether you didn’t want to talk about or you told him everything from the smallest problem to big issue that ate at you everyday. He was there for you through thick and thing, so when on this picticular day Taehyung knew something was wrong. He sensed it the moment he woke up.

Seeing you spacing out while eating breakfast with him, till he offers you to sit on the couch with him. Laying on top of his lap, Taehyung looking down wearing his glasses.

“You’re pretty.” Taehyung smiles seeing you roll your eyes. He brushes your cheek grabbing the book near the shelve.

“I know you’re having a bad day but you know we get to progress in the book.” The book was something Taehyung suggested. One of his favorite books of all time, the story of life being a complete rollercoaster. The characters going through all sorts of problems some you relate and others you’re amazed of how they power through.

You nod seeing Taehyung open the book the bookmark of a cute little bear, carefully placing it on the side of couch. Reading the first words, Taehyung was always an amazing story teller. Through his voice he does all the characteristics of the characters. When the plot grew tense he would changed his voice, the fantasy world you got sucked into disappearing from your own world.

Sometimes you two would stay like this for hours. Taehyung drinking his tea between chapters giving his voice a break asking you if you were ready to share what was wrong. Other times you nodded and spilled, Taehyung holding your hand on top of your thigh while others you didn’t spill him continuing to read the pages.

Jeon Jungkook: ˚✧₊⁎

Jungkook was a gym rat, that’s one of the many reasons why you love him so much. He loves to just push his body to the limit. So when he wakes up one morning hearing you have those sad moments in the morning he would wrap you close to him.

He took the chance of the beginning of the day to try to save the rest of the day. Jungkook didn’t want you to stay inside and burry yourself in your sorrows. He wanted you outside and even if you didn’t like the idea at first you tried because of him.

Depending on the mood you had, sometimes you two would go on easy trails to more difficult ones. The first couple times they were more easy trails but the fact you trusted him enough to do this with him. It spoke volumes, it made his heart warm slowly seeing you breathing in the fresh air, looking at nature, and having the sun hit you.

During the hike he would compliment you, saying things like “Wow you are doing so good!” and “My champ! These trails got nothing on you!” Always making you smiling like a idiot. On the way up you two would talk, sharing the struggles and experiences.

You always learn something new about Jungkook taking the hikes plus getting to kiss him at the top of a beautiful view was also a bonus.

Top 10 Personal Favorite Hit Songs from 2009

20 to 21 years old. And so the 2000s end, not with a whimper, but with an explosion of upbeat, great pop songs.

Only one third of these lists left to make!

Disclaimers:

Keep in mind I’m using both the year-end top 100 lists from the US and from France while making these top 10 things. There’s songs in English that charted in my country way higher than they did in their home countries, or even earlier or later, so that might get surprising at times.

Of course there will be stuff in French. We suck. I know. It’s my list. Deal with it.

My musical tastes have always been terrible and I’m not a critic, just a listener and an idiot.

I have sound to color synesthesia which justifies nothing but might explain why I have trouble describing some songs in other terms than visual ones.

First to second and final year of my Master degree in Contemporary History. Also got two summer jobs that year. I was basically only researching and writing my master thesis at this point and trying to survive on a 50€ per month budget to pay for transport, clothes, driving lessons, and food apart from one meal a day. Needless to say, some corners had to be cut and my health wasn’t the best. I was also trying to register to pass some concours d’Etat to be a government worker considering there was 0% chance I’d be able to find a job otherwise with my qualifications and my mother had been trying to find an excuse to throw me out for more than four years at this point. Basically I was broke, stressed out and in panic mode.

Thank god, the music was mostly energetic and upbeat on the radio. I can’t imagine what my mood would have been like if the charts had been as horribly depressed as in 2018 or 2019.

This was also the year when my favorite music reviewer ever, Todd In The Shadows, started to make his first videos, so you might think his lists are going to influence mine, but as it turns out we have very, very different tastes for the most part (I mean come on, the guy hates Depeche Mode), so... not so much. But he helped me discover a lot of songs I would have ignored otherwise, so yeah, godspeed, Todd.

It should be mentioned that the two songs that I wanted to put at the top of this list before looking at the actual year-end lists turned out to be non-elligible and that is extremely frustrating. Obviously, as I mentioned in the previous post, there’s Life In Technicolor II by Coldplay, which has an incredibly fitting name since it’s one of their most colorful songs ever. But I’m not even sure I would have put it at #1 since this was the year of Mika’s second album, and oh my god, We Are Golden was FANTASTIC. It’s my absolute favorite song from the guy, the music video is incredibly fun, and I listened to that shit on a loop as soon as it dropped.

I usually don’t put such large links for non-elligible songs but the fact this isn’t elligible is nothing short of criminal. Check it out if you’ve never heard it.

As for albums from bands I liked... eh. Lacuna Coil dropped Shallow Life, which was not as good as KarmaCode, Pet Shop Boys dropped Yes which wasn’t nearly as good as Fundamental, Depeche Mode dropped Sounds of the Universe which was DEFINITELY not as good as Playing the Angel (I liked Wrong, though. But it’s not elligible), Eminem released Relapse which was joyless and pretty bad and he was kinda dead to me at that point (even if it wasn’t as terrible as Encore AND he had that song with Drake that was very good), Placebo released Battle for the Sun which was pretty great but still not as good as their previous two albums, Paradise Lost had Faith Divides Us Faith Unites Us and basically same thing there, and Indochine had La République des Météors which is imho their worst record in the past twenty years, by far.

Long story short, every single one of the bands and artists I loved who released an album that year let me down (except Placebo, maybe).

And then VNV Nation released Of Faith, Power And Glory, I listened to it, and suddenly I had a new favorite band, and everything was good and beautiful in the world again. Album of the year for me, hands down.

With that out of the way, a few honorable mentio-HOLY SHIT HOW MANY OF THESE ARE THERE, WTF

Replay (Iyaz) - A perfectly good and innocent little earworm.

Run This Town (Rihanna) - I don’t like the original very much (Kanye’s verse is atrocious) but I've had a mashup of it with Bach’s Tocatta & Fugue in D minor (yes you read that right) on my mp3 player for years now, so this has to count. The mashup is called Run This Town In D Minor. It’s one of my favorite mashups ever. I even made fanart of it once! Look it up if you can, the original video has apparently disappeared.

Circus (Britney Spears) - You know it’s a good year for pop when even Britney Spears makes music I like.

Magnificent (U2) - Wait, even U2 was making decent music? I had zero use for them since at that point Linkin Park had more or less taken over their ecological-musical niche of “mainstream epic-sounding pop-rock music with tortured vocals and Emotions(tm)” but that one was still kinda nice.

Même Pas Fatigué (Magic System & Khaled) - I’ve said that before and I’ll say it again but they always bring a smile to my face and I don’t get why it’s ‘cool’ to hate their songs in my country. Yeah, they often sound the same, but I’d listen to ten similar-sounding Magic System songs in a heartbeat whereas you’d have to pay me to listen to ten similar-sounding Nickelback songs.

Day n Nite (Kid Cudi) - This had a tendency to get stuck in my head, but not at all in an unpleasant way.

21 Guns (Green Day) - Much better than I remembered.

When Love Takes Over (David Guetta), Stereo Love (Edward Maya ft Vika Jigulina), Evacuate the Dancefloor (Cascada) - That year was full of catchy, stupid, energetic songs, wasn’t it?

Greenlight (John Legend) - If I had better taste, this would be on the list. Alas, you’re reading the top 10s of someone who once put Blue (Eiffel 65) in a #1 spot, so yeah.

In Your Hands (Charlie Winston) - Same thing, basically.

Like a Hobo (Charlie Winston) - “Like a hobo from a broken home, nothing’s gonna stop me”, said this very useful song. Now is a good time to remind you that my nickname at the public university was The Hobo. So yeah. I liked this song a lot and I still do.

Forever (Drake) - Drake and Eminem are both amazing on this track. Unfortunately there’s also Kanye West and Lil Wayne on it. But. Like. “I'm Hannibal Lecter so just in case you're thinking of saving face / You ain't gonna have no face to save”. Dude. Duuuuuude.

You Found Me & Never Say Never (The Fray) - Did I mention I really, really liked this band. I think I did. Several times.

Paparazzi & Love Game (Lady Gaga) - Would both have had a chance to land on the list without the incredible amount of great, catchy tunes that year had to offer.

C’est Dans l’Air (Mylène Farmer) - Mylène Farmer had THREE singles on the French year-end list and this is the ONLY one I like. Good electro, mediocre verses but a great chorus (and a weird and kind of hilarious music video). Basically a song saying we’re all going to die and she can only sing about it. It’s strange, it’s a bit dark in a fun way, but it’s sadly not enough to land on the list, and it was the last cut from it.

Phew. Making this list was like a Hunger Games of catchy, upbeat, stupid songs to find which one was the best. It’s not #1 but I’m still shocked I had to put it so high.

But first, the runner ups.

10 - Fire Burning (Sean Kingston)

US: #33 / FR: Not on the list

Yes, ALL these honorable mentions were kicked out to give the last spot on the list to this guy and a chorus that goes “somebody call 911, shawty fire burning on the dance floor, WOAH!”.

The fact that I don’t feel bad about it means this was the right pick for that spot.

9 - Rain (Mika)

US: Not on the list / FR: #22

Anybody else thinks Mika looks like the Fourth Doctor on this screenshot from the music video or is it just me?

Anyway. So yeah, as I said, We Are Golden would have topped this list if it had been elligible. Sadly, it isn’t, but Rain is. I don’t like it nearly as much as We Are Golden, but what can I say. It’s still Mika. I’ll take whatever I can.

8 - I Gotta Feeling (Black Eyed Peas)

US: #4 / FR: #17

I lost about 80% of the respect I had for this song the day I realised its untouchable, marvellous beat was very probably stolen from Take a Dive. I still love it though. Had a few actual parties in 2010 and early 2011 and this was garanteed to make everyone dance, even people like me who don’t know how to dance.

And then the dancefloor died instantly anytime anyone tried to put Boom Boom Pow on because it’s impossible to dance on that one. But that’s another story.

7 - Poker Face (Lady Gaga)

US: #2 / FR: #5

Needless to say this was absolutely everywhere and overplayed to death and beyond, and the fact I still wanted to listen to it and put it on my playlists really tells you how good I thought it was (and still is).

6 - Ça m’énerve (Helmut Fritz)

US: Not on the list / FR: #1 (...yes.)

This is a novelty song with a singer pretending to have a thick German accent, complaining about various things in France, like the fact he doesn’t fit the dress code for a club, that he wanted to buy a sweater with “Rock” written on it but it’s out of stock, that some girls can fit in a size 34 blue jean and not him, that there’s a queue of people trying to buy macarons at the Ladurée shop, and so on. And every time he concludes “that gets on my nerves”, said in a very flat tone. Here’s a translation.

It was overplayed as f█ck here. Think Despacito levels of overplay. But the beat is great and it’s still hysterical after having heard it about a hundred times that year.

Fun fact, while I was making this list and relistening to this song, my s.o said “haha that sounds great! What is it?” and I stared at him in disbelief. Somehow, he was completely serious. That’s like someone escaping the Great Macarena Onslaught Of 1996. What happened. How.

5 - Waking Up In Vegas (Katy Perry)

US: #36 / FR: Not on the list

Again, I must remind you that my s.o is a Katy Perry fan and that I’ve heard this song even more than the average radio listener did at the time, and it’s STILL #5 on this list. What can I say. It’s a ton of fun and one of my favorite songs from her.

4 - New Divide (Linkin Park)

US: #61 / FR: Not on the list

Is this their best song? Not by a f█cking mile. I thought it would be much lower when I started to make this specific list, but what can I say. Linkin Park is like that one old friend that you kept no contact with for years, and once you meet them again, it’s like they never left. Who cares if that wasn’t nearly as good as Numb or In the End? Not me, that’s for sure.

Also, “In every loss in every lie / In every truth that you deny / And each regret and each goodbye / Was a mistake too great to hide / And your voice was all I heard / That I get what I deserve”. Holy shit, dude.

3 - Good Girls Go Bad (Cobra Starship)

US: #43 / FR: Not on the list

BEHOLD. THE ONLY SURVIVOR OF THE 2009 ‘CATCHY UPBEAT STUPID SONGS’ HUNGER GAMES. THE CATCHIEST, UPBEAT-IEST, STUPIDEST OF THEM ALL. HERE IT IS AT LAST.

The thing I love about this is that it’s a song made by nerds for nerds and that the singer looks and sounds completely non-threatening. As Todd said in his own list back in the day, “that guy couldn’t make good MILK go bad” and that’s what’s so endearing about the song, I think.

Also yes, this is, in fact, placed above Linkin Park.

2 - Use Somebody (Kings of Leon)

US: #14 / FR: Not on the list

This was my #1 at first. I LOVED it. I even bought the album, even though, as you know, my funds were very low that year. That music is soaring. It’s majestic. Well, the lyrics aren’t that majestic and soaring, it’s about loving someone and trying to catch their attention, but the rest? Damn this is intense. It was also elligible for the 2010 list, by the way, where I ALSO wondered if it should be #1, but in both cases, it wasn’t meant to be.

And so this list of 2009 hit songs comes to a close.

It began with the forging of the Great 2009 Upbeat Songs. Three were given to the Punk Rock hits. Seven to the Dance Tracks. And nine, nine songs were gifted to the Radio Friendly Pop Songs, which above all else desired power.

But they were all deceived, for another song was made. Deep in the forgotten land of Synth Pop, in his Parents’ Basement, the Dark Lord Adam Young forged a master song, and into this song he poured his joy, his talent and his will to dominate all charts.

One song to rule them all.

1 - Fireflies (Owl City)

US: #60 / FR: Not on the list (76 the next year)

I know. It’s a meme nowadays. But still. Have you any idea how satisfying a song with an initial beat that looks like small pulsing yellow and blue lights in the dark ACTUALLY titled “Fireflies” is? How gentle it all sounds and looks, even when the music soars? The number of drawings and paintings I made just based on the colors of THAT song? It’s like a synth pop version of one of my favorite Mike Oldfield tunes ever, Weightless.

And then, on top of all the rest, how relatable was that guy’s body language and general attitude?? Before even knowing he was on the spectrum I was like “oh BIG mood.”

Also following his twitter was one of the best decisions I ever made.

So yeah. I would have loved to put Coldplay or Mika in that #1 spot, but I’m not too mad about it thanks to this wonderful little song and its author. Such a shame Deer in the Headlights and Alligator Sky aren’t elligible for the 2011 list.

Erik was on top of the fucking world. His album came out and immediately took off, climbing the charts. Earlier in the week, his album reached number one in Hip Hop. So, what better way to celebrate than pop a couple bottles, dance with a few baddies, and reap the rewards of all his hard work. 

It was Friday night, Erik and his crew were in Blue Flame, each brother having a bottle whatever they wanted. A few Instagram models surrounded the group, a few hanging off some of the men’s arms. Erik was seated on one of the couches, legs spread and arm resting on the top of the couch while a girl sat by him, boring the fuck outta him.

On the opposite end of this story, Y/N NEEDED a break from niggas. Her last little boo was on his fuck shit, playing with her emotions but she cut that shit quick. She was tired of trying to be boo’d up wit somebody sun so fuck a nigga, hot girl summer it is. She stepped out with her closest friend Melanie, putting on a little black number. Spaghetti straps, suede material on the outside and silk on the inside, she let her hair remain in it’s natural state with a face beat to the GAWDS. She was gon’ have somebody choosing tonight, as long as he was fine, could hold a conversation and wasn’t on no fuck shit.

The night progressed on, Y/N getting approached by dudes but none of them peeking her interest. Melanie had the same experience, both of them sitting at the bar and laughing. Y/N went to order another drink before feeling a hand tug her arm. Melanie looked awestruck as she stared behind Y/N. “Damn, bitch, you might as well yank my damn arm off.” Y/N huffed and turned around, trying to find what Melanie might be staring t. “That’s fucking Killmonger.” Melanie spoke, moving Y/N head in the right direction. 

Y/N chuckled and bit her lip, eyeing him up down. Erik was talkig to his homeboy, laughing so you caught the gleam of his grill. You licked your lips and took in a deep breath, eyes nearly rolling bak. “He finer in person...” You muttered. Melanie stood up, downing her drink and yours. “Come on, bitch. Let’s dance.” You looked at her sideways. “Bitch, did you just take my drink?!” You exclaimed over the music as she pulled you into the crowd.

Erik and his crew laughed loudly, some of them beginning to make their way to dance floor since they knew Megan had women feeling like the shit. Erik sat back, sipping from his bottle. His eyes ran over the crowd before seeming to be stuck on shorty in the black suede dress. She looked like she was in her own zone, having the time of her life with her friend, one singing the lyrics to the other. 

Erik took another swig before standing up, his chains swinging as he made his way out of his section and to the floor. He smoothly made his way through the crowd, politely removing female hands from his body. He stopped when he got Ms. Suede and rubbed his beard as he watched her bend over, rolling her hips.

You felt a pair of  hands gently slide their way from the side of your thighs to your hips, moving with every roll, twerk, and grind of your body. You stood up, reaching behind you. You let your hand rest on the back of his neck, feeling his chains. You glanced at Melanie, waiting for confirmation to continue or dip and she nodded vigorously, eyes wide. You were slightly confused before continuing to roll your body, one of his hands making their way to your mid section while the other rested on your thigh.

The song faded out and you were finally able to get a look at the mystery man. When you saw his face you stumbled back slightly, luckily Melanie held you up. “Killmonger in the building!” The DJ yelled and Erik looked up nodding his head, smiling before looking back to you. He gestured for you to come with him and you shook your head, gesturing to Melanie. He gestured for you to bring her too and you took her hand, following him through the crowd. The three of you finally got to his section and Melanie peaced out, the two of you still remaining close enough to each other in case something happened.

You started looking for Melanie, seeing her talking to one of Erik’s friends, giggling up a storm. You got her attention and gestured if she was ready to go. She hesitated, nodding eventually before turning to Erik’s friend. You turned to Erik. “I have to go, it was really nice meeting you. I’m a huge fan and you’re just as cool as people say you are.” You smiled and Erik licked his lips. 

“Let me walk you out, Ma. I’m bout to dip too.” You nodded and stood up, pulling your dress down.

You watched Melanie get in her car and waited for her to text you that you were good to get in yours before you sighed softly. You looked down at your feet, wanting to relieve them of the heels so bad but you didn’t wanna be barefoot on the ground. Erik noticed your look and walked in front of you, bending down slightly. You lightly chuckled before jumping up and getting on his back. “You’re a life saver.” You spoke and Erik chuckled. 

“Where you park, mama?” You point to your car and he walks the two of you over, making you laugh the entire short trip. “Here you go.” he put you down and you sighed, unlocking your car before getting in. You didn’t shut the door, still talking to Erik. “Let me take you out, princess.” He spoke and you laughed softly. “You getting real cozy with these nicknames.” He shrugged and bit his lip, leaning over. “They just suit you, so what you say?” 

You chuckled and looked to your phone, texting Melanie that you were about to leave. “We’ll see, my ig is @(________).” Erik pulled out his phone and immediately looked you up, following you back since you were already following him. “Hit me up there nd we’ll talk.” You smirked and he licked his lips, eyeing you before nodding. “Aight, ma. I’ll hit you up then. Bye, Ms. Suede.” You laughed and rolled your eyes, putting on your seatbelt and shutting the door before putting the car in drive. “Bye, Erik.” You smiled and pulled off. 

As you drove you got a dm. ‘@thekillmonger: I got you, Princess. Good night.’

Taylor Swift - Home (A fan’s educated guess at the upcoming 7th album of Taylor Alison Swift)

So, I’ve been a Swiftie for 13 years now and I know a lot of people say things like ‘her music saved my life’ but her music literally did save my life. Anyway, just thought I’d do some investigative journalism and you know, decode all the different Easter eggs we’ve got lately and I present to you, Taylor Swift’s 7th album; “Home”. If she has included “SPELLING IS FUN” because her album is literally going to be tracks spelled alphabetically from A-M, I can’t even. M is the 13th letter in the alphabet (need I say more). So, I was just playing around with some other titles, and it all fell into place and the more I think about it, the more this seems to fit TS7 (or just proved that maybe I am crazy, who knows?). Hope you enjoy!

1/A. ‘Awesome’ comes from a few places, obviously the lyrics in ME! and she also posted on Instagram with “this is AWESOME” about Shawn Mendes’ comments in her TIME article. Or, is it time for a song titled Abigail? Is this Abi’s time to shine? Do American’s even shorten the name Abigail to Abi like we do in Australia? I digress. Imagine if this song is called “Ariel” and Taylor’s like “guys, I literally dressed as Ariel to my NY party and y’all didn’t think?”. Oh to be part of your world, Tay Tay.

2/B. ‘Butterflies’ (or just ‘Butterfly’) is a more obvious choice I think, with Taylor posting several Instagram pictures with just the Butterfly emoji. Also, in ME! the snake literally turns into butterflies. Either this or maybe she’s written a song about Benjamin Button. For bonus points, track 2 on “Speak Now” is ‘Sparks Fly’, keeping with the ‘fly’ theme - Shantay you stay.

3/C. I was thinking this one could be a few options but I just felt like ‘Christmas’ fits here. It would be an evolution of ‘New Year’s Day’ and could pay tribute to her growing up on a Christmas farm. Also, the Christmas tree in ME! was said to be a huge hint and Easter egg, so I am thinking this is on brand. I mean, otherwise the track may just be called “CATS” because, Taylor. Also, can I just alert your attention to again “Speak Now” track 3 “back to December”, what’s in December, Oh CHRISTMAS.

4/D. This one was a little trickier. ‘Daylight’ came to me because of her post “step into the daylight & let it go”. It’s a push I know, but I’m open to suggestions. It could also be the track that she features the Dixie Chicks, and maybe it’s called something else like ‘Denver’ and could be quite an emotional song to do with her trial in Denver re sexual assault, and again, this is definitely up the Dixie Chicks ally to be making a statement through music. Also, bit of a push, but in “1989” ‘Out of the Woods’ was track 4 and it definitely goes with that theme, only this time she isn’t in the woods, she’s stepping out into the daylight. (IKR I AM SMRT).

5/E. I would love to say that the E stands for ‘Engaged’ here and that this is her way of telling us all that she is actually Engaged, but I went with something lighter like “Everything” and maybe this song is about her fans meaning everything to her. Again, a trickier letter to find any other hints towards, unless it’s literally as easy as “Easter Eggs” and it’s literally a song about her love of leaving hints in her music and film clips for all us Swifties. Track 5 is always a goody (I’m looking at you ‘All Too Well’), ‘Delicate’ being the first track 5 to be released as a single, so I’m thinking this one will be truly personal, TS7 I’m coming for you.

6/F. This one has to be ‘French’ right? Something is going on with her speaking French in ME! and this one’s gotta have a good story for us? Or like French … something. French kiss? Cute right? If Tan from Queer Eye was writing a song, it would obviously be called “French Tuck”. Tell me I’m wrong, I’ll wait. Track 6 is always fun and it’s sisters include ‘Shake it Off’, ‘You Belong With Me’, ‘22’, so get ready to have this song in your head all day.

7/G. I mean, come on. How cute would this be if it’s called “Growing Up”. Paying homage to ‘Never Grow Up’ (“Speak Now” days) would be so sweet, and her singing about her journey and growing up in the spotlight, very on brand. Also - she is 30 this year so again, this could definitely be a possibility. Back in “1989” boy did I have “I Wish You Would” on repeat, so this one could be a dark horse.

8/H. I refuse to believe this track and album is called anything but ‘Home’. There’s no place like home (Wizard of Oz references in ME!), you can’t spell ‘home’ without ‘me’, so many other hints and pieces that point towards this also. It would just be such a sweet album and track title. Oh Taylor, when I listen to you, I’m home. Taylor hasn’t had a single and album title the same since “Red” (2012, track 2) (also worth noting; “Speak Now” - album title & track 4, “Fearless” - album title & track 1). If you really want to come for me, 4 (Speak Now) multiplied by 2 (Red) = 8 (Home). AMIRIGHT?

9/I. “I AM CALM”, I scream at my boyfriend when he tells me I need to calm down as I realise I have cracked the DaVinci code that is Taylor Swift’s new album. I really think I’ve got this one down pact. She loves the capital letter Easter eggs, so I am all for this one. I have big expectations for this one, to be in the same league of track 9’s as ‘Getaway Car’ and ‘Wildest Dreams’. Taylor, I most certainly am not calm about this song.

10/J. Come on guys, if she names this song after ‘Joe’ I will probably grab a bottle of red, force my 2 cats to sit on my lap with a blanket and cry happy tears for weeks, all the while asking my boyfriend why he hasn’t written a song about me. Can you believe? I am here. For. It. Oh also, just so you know, “King of my Heart” was track 10 on ‘reputation’ and JOE IS LITERALLY TE KING OF HER HEART AND I AM NOT READY FOR THIS BEAUTIFUL SONG.

11/K. This one has to be ‘Kaleidoscope’ or Kaleidoscope Heart, idk. So many Easter eggs that could be linked to this song and I really think I’ve nailed this one. Track 11 has some big shoes to fill since I haven’t stopped playing “Forever & Always” or “Our Song” for many years. I mean, either that or the song is called ‘Karyn’ and we get a song ripping the Kardashians, but like that’s so Rep era Tay Tay, but a gal can dream.

12/L. This one’s gotta be ‘Lover’, and you can fight me on it. This one y’all guessed as soon as it appeared in the ME! film clip, I’ve seen some screenshots of Apple music or something with the track title ‘Lover’, it goes with everything the new TS7 era is about, and it just makes me happy knowing a song is called ‘Lover’.

13/M. ME! Well, we all know ME!’s gotta be there somewhere. And I mean, come on, ‘This Is Why We Can’t Have Nice Things’ was the most fun on reputation, and Tay has said ME! is just a fun song and not taking anything too seriously, I can’t even say it with a straight face. (You’re welcome)

As I write this, I can’t help but wonder, is this the 5 holes in the fence situation all over? Have I completely gone Tay-Cray? Where do the palm trees come into play? Will the meet-and-greets be held in the “Home Room” during the tour? Will it be the “Home Dome”? Maybe. Most likely not. All I know is, I can’t wait to see what happens and listen to new music from Taylor Swift.

COVID-19 | Connecting with Audiences in a Time of Isolation

Musicians Alexa Tarantino and Steven Feifke are livestreaming their music from their living room and raising funds for artists while doing it.

In this time of great uncertainty, artists of all disciplines are connecting with audiences in digital spaces like never before. Visual artists are giving virtual tours of their gallery shows and more are turning to selling work online (tips on how to do so via artnet News). Authors are reading chapters or poems from their books to online audiences; this example from The New York Times tells how children’s book authors Mo Willems, Gene Luen Yang, Amie Kaufman, and others are giving interactive presentations to kids who are now learning from home. Last week, Jessica Chen, founder and artistic director of J Chen Project, led 20-30 minute movement sessions via Zoom. The sessions opened up a new way of connecting and moving with others, and were designed for movers and non-movers alike. 

Musicians, like jazz saxophonist Alexa Tarantino and pianist and composer Steven Feifke, have taken matters into their own hands by livestreaming shows from their living room. Tarantino and Feifke have held two concerts so far with two more upcoming on Sunday, March 29 and Sunday, April 5, with 25% of all proceeds going to NYFA. We spoke with Tarantino and Feifke to learn more about how they got started, and why these concerts matter now.

NYFA: Can you tell us more about what inspired your first concert on Sunday, March 15, and why you chose to donate 25% of the proceeds to NYFA?

Alexa Tarantino: When all of this discussion of quarantine and lockdown started, we heard that some larger organizations in Europe were using livestream as a way to continue presenting their programs without bringing large groups of people together. After I returned from a tour, we self-quarantined for safety reasons. In an effort to still play and perform for people as much as possible, we decided to put on a livestreamed duo concert from our apartment. We knew about New York Foundation for the Arts because of various opportunities and grants that the organization offers for artists and wanted to help others in our situation.

Steven Feifke: As soon as the outbreak of COV-ID 19 started to go from bad to worse in the U.S. and many of my performance-based engagements were cancelled, I thought to myself that there had to be a way to continue to perform and reach people. Alexa and I talked about it and agreed that as a part of our series, we wanted to have a way to give back to the community and support other artists whose livelihood has been affected by the COV-ID 19 outbreak. We knew that any donations we made to NYFA would get to the people who needed it most.

NYFA: Can you speak to the losses that you and those in your community are currently experiencing as a result of COVID-19 (in terms of gigs, income, recording sessions, etc)? 

AT: COVID-19 has definitely turned my work schedule upside down. All but a few of my events (domestic and international) through May have been cancelled. Some will be rescheduled at a later time, but many won’t. This is a large loss of income and also presents a challenge for bookings later in the spring and early summer, because we don’t know where things will go from here. However, this down time has been an opportunity to rest and recharge, and work on new music and projects. There is a silver lining!

SF: My professional career is mainly based around composing, arranging, and orchestrating. Although I have had several exciting performances and recordings get cancelled as a result of the outbreak of the virus, the majority of my work has not changed. I count myself lucky that I am still able to write music for upcoming albums and recording sessions, as well as teach masterclasses and private lessons out of my home studio. In fact, I am about to produce a project for Splice, and will be able to hire several musicians to record out of their home studios. 

NYFA: How easy or difficult is it logistically to put on these concerts? Would you recommend the platform you used and do you know of others (beyond Facebook, YouTube, Instagram) that musicians and performers might be using?

AT: Presenting these concerts has been seamless thanks to Crowdcast. My assistant Maura discovered it and we will certainly be using it in the future! This is a platform that we decided to pay for, but we have loved the user experience so far. Concert attendees can “save their spot” for the event so we have an idea of how many will be viewing, and the program also sends a reminder email to the attendees, has a great chat/Q&A feature, donation feature, and more. We would recommend this but also have seen people present great programs on social media platforms including Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram.

SF: Crowdcast also archives each of our performances, so viewers are able to watch past concerts at their leisure. 

NYFA: You mentioned it was your first time livestreaming a show. What was it like for you as performers, and can you describe how the experience differed from other live performances you've done?

AT: Yes this was our first time live-streaming and it was very interesting! While we can't see or hear the audience, we could definitely feel their presence through their comments and "virtual applause." Since we are performing from the comfort of our home, it does feel a little more free and like we can take our time with the presentation. There's certainly less stress since there's no soundcheck, stage lighting, equipment, contract, pack-up process, etc!

SF: Well—this was the first concert I have ever given while wearing slippers! All joking aside, there was a certain amount of comfort that I derived from playing on the piano I practice with, but I definitely missed the excitement of feeling a direct audience interaction. Our audience members did the next best thing and sent us "applause emojis" after every song, which was really nice.

NYFA: Do you think that presentations like these provide some element of comfort during such challenging times? What are your thoughts on the potential in this sort of presentation for reaching new audiences? 

AT: Yes, we received great feedback from people who appreciated being able to listen to our music in their living rooms or during dinner. While it’s not the same as a live performance, I think it makes people feel less alone and reminds them of the beauty and purpose of art. We know that this idea of livestreaming performances has already spread across the world. We hope this encourages people to seek out other livestream events and we hope to be able to reach as many people as possible with our music.

SF: Personally, I am comforted by the fact that Alexa and I still have an outlet with which we can share our music and perform. I think that our friends, family, fans, and people we have become connected with through our performance careers are also glad to be able to tune in and hear us perform in this new setting. It's not the same as an in-person concert, but everyone is doing their best to adapt to life under quarantine, and I think that this sort of presentation of the music brings us all closer together. We are going to continue this series next Sunday, March 29 by celebrating Charlie Parker's centennial, and the following Sunday, April 5 with a concert featuring the music of Antonio Carlos Jobim. We hope that with each concert, we are able to reach new audiences—and hopefully see everyone at a live in-person concert soon!
