Edith Payne and Charlie Rowland

Charlie was never a good student. Leave that to Edith. But she remembers listening to Edith in the library one night after that night in the lake as Edith talked about weather patterns and climate and the like. Edith had talked about something called Lichtenberg figures- scars left on victims of lightning strikes.

Edith doesn’t keep her scars from the spider, but she feels it all the same, just as Charlie feels it when her knuckles go into the souls in circles that try to steal Edith from her. Charlie’s knuckles bruise and split and scar, too corporeal between Hell’s walls.

There’s this feeling in Charlie’s chest when she looks at Edith’s storm-gray eyes, the lightning strike of her crooked smile, the thunder of her running her fingers through her dark curls and pinning them back with finger bones from one of her previous bodies, and Charlie can’t begin to name it until the moment at which Edith takes Charlie’s split knuckles and kisses them. Blood paints Edith’s lips for a moment, staining them, and Charlie knows she should be horrified by it but all she can focus on is the brush of Edith’s lips against her skin, the most tender thing that Charlie has ever known.

And Charlie knows, with all her hell-bitten heart, that she doesn’t just love this stormcloud girl, but that she is in love with her.
