Maybe he's really hopelessly and truly in love with the reader but she feels like she isn't good enough for him. Maybe he's trying to let her know that she really is the only one he'll ever love. And she shows up to his concert where he sings this, and he sees her in the crowd.

Believe Me When I Say I Love You

You were head over heels for your best friend. The two of you had been friends for around ten years and you couldn’t remember a time since then that you had been there for each other whenever the other needed. However, the more time you spent with Aaron, the more you caught yourself falling from him. You wanted nothing more than to tell Aaron how you felt but you also knew that he deserved to be with someone so much better than you.

So, when Aaron turned to you out of the blue one day and told you that he thought that he was falling in love with you, you were quick to shut down any and every attempt he made to convince you:

‘(Y/N), can you just listen to what I’m trying to tell you?’ Aaron asked desperately as you shut him down for the fifth time that week.

‘There’s no point,’ you replied as if it was the most obvious thing in the world, ‘you don’t mean it. You just think you do.’

You watched as Aaron’s jaw clenched tightly in annoyance and you wanted nothing more than to run your thumb soothingly over his jaw until he relaxed again. You couldn’t look into his eyes because you knew that the moment you did, you’d melt into him and spill all of your own feelings and you knew that Aaron didn’t need to hear them. Aaron stood staring at you for a few seconds before his shoulders deflated and he let out a heavy sigh.

‘I think I should probably head home for a while, I’ve got to be at the theatre in a couple of hours anyway,’ he said quietly, this time it was him not meeting your eyes. He turned around and started to walk back down the street the way the two of you had just come.

‘Aaron,’ you called, not wanting him to walk away so upset with you. ‘I’m sorry,’ you said when he turned around to face you. He gave you a soft smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes before turning back around and disappearing around the corner.

You’d been avoiding Aaron for the past two weeks, hoping that the distance would help him get over his little crush quicker. It didn’t stop him from constantly messaging you though; constantly apologising, thinking that it was his fault that you weren’t talking to him. After two weeks of his constant messages, you were surprised when you looked at your phone one evening and saw that you only had one message from him that day:

‘Hey, I promise I’m not going to try to get you to talk to me again but I just wanted to let you know I’ve got a gig tonight if you wanted to come? It’d be nice to see you there.’

Your heart twisted in your chest as you read the message and you could just tell that he was upset at the fact he hadn’t heard from you for the past two weeks. You decided that the least you could do was go to the gig, cheer him on and then apologise for ignoring him afterwards and explain why. To kill the time, you clicked onto Twitter where you saw that Aaron was practically trending. Curious, you searched his name and were shocked when you saw all the tweets from people wondering who this mystery woman was who had broken his heart.

Underneath a few of the tweets, there was videos from people who had gone to see Aaron in Moulin Rouge and filmed the last section of Roxanne. Even if you didn’t know Aaron better than you knew yourself, you’d be absolutely stupid if you didn’t notice how broken-hearted Aaron looked, you knew that his character was supposed to be tormented during the song but something about these videos didn’t sit right with you and you knew that Aaron wasn’t acting; especially when he’d sing “believe me when I say I love you.’ You spent the rest of the afternoon, scrolling through the tweets and before you knew it, you were grabbing your shoes and heading out of your door to go to Aaron’s gig, determined to set things right between you.

Due to the Subway being busy, you got to the gig a little late and Aaron was midway through a song. You tried to blend in with the crowd by hanging around the back so you wouldn’t cause a commotion by trying to get to the front but, almost as if he had a secret radar that told him you were close, Aaron’s gaze moved over to you and you watched as his whole body picked up as he finished his song, not daring to take his eyes off of you.

‘So, this next one, I wasn’t actually planning on doing tonight but something’s changed, someone I wasn’t actually expecting to be here tonight has come so we’re going for it and I hope it turns out okay so, bear with me,’ he said, causing a low chuckle to reverberate around the room from the audience. The piano started a soft melody as Aaron practically turned his whole body until he was facing you, his eyes not leaving yours as he began to sing.

As soon as he started singing, you recognised the song immediately as ‘I Can’t Make You Love Me’ and the way he was watching you as he was essentially pouring his heart out to you, you knew that he meant every single word that was leaving his lips. Tears began to prick at your eyes when you heard the piano start to change and he went into ‘All I Ask’ by Adele.

For the whole duration of the medley, it felt like it was only you and Aaron in the room and you were only reminded of everyone else when the applause set in. From the looks of it, Aaron was feeling the exact same and as soon as the applause had started to die down, he called an interval, heading over to you as soon as he’d put his microphone down.

‘You came!’ he said gently, a soft smile gracing his features. ‘I know you don’t want to hear any of it but that - are you okay?’ he asked when he realised that you had tears streaming down your cheeks. His thumb automatically reached out to brush your tears away and without thinking, you nuzzled your cheek into his palm; God, you’d missed him.

‘I’m so sorry. I knew what you were going to say the other week and I had to stop you before you could finish because I didn’t want to turn you down because of course I love you too, Aaron, it’s just that you deserve to be with someone so much better than me.’ You braved looking up at his face and you inwardly cringed when you saw the frown on his face, thinking that you had completely missed the mark.

‘Is that really what you think?’ he asked in almost a whisper. ‘You think that you’re not good enough for me. (Y/N), if anything, it’s the other way around. You’re incredible! You’re my best friend and there’s no one else I’d rather be with. We know each other in a way I don’t even know how to describe and I know that we would be amazing together. The past two weeks have been absolute hell, I haven’t been able to focus on anything and I’ve even had people asking me if I’m okay after they’ve been to see the show.’

‘Woah, slow down, hey, you’re okay,’ you soothed when you realised that Aaron was talking so fast, wanting to get everything off of his chest that he wasn’t giving himself room to breathe. Your hands came up to gently rest on his chest and his hands gripped yours like a lifeline, like his was scared that if he let go, you were going to disappear.

‘(Y/N), please can we give this a go. I love you and loving you has made me realise that I don’t think I’ve ever been in love before you came into my life because I have never felt the way I feel about you with anyone else.’

You smiled softly and looked down at your feet, however, Aaron’s hand quickly came up to your chin and tilted your head back up to look at him. You inhaled softly when you realised that he was a lot closer than you thought and his lips curved into a gentle smirk when he heard your gasp.

‘Please,’ he mumbled, not tearing his eyes away from your lips or letting go of your chin. It was in that moment that you decided to say “screw it” to all of the doubts you’d placed in your own head and you mumbled an ‘I love you,’ before wrapping your arms around his neck and pulling yourself against him until your lips crashed together.

Instead of a writer/poet, Lan Wangji is a musician who doesn't quite believe in the power of love like the original dude because Family Issues, but he loves music down to his soul and believes it should be a treasured thing. He often says more with his music than he does his normal words, but then, that's what music is supposed to do. 

I don't know WHY they're there, but he and Lan Xichen are new to the city and they're trying to make it as musicians. Lan Xichen is a lot more...open to trying to perform anywhere, including quarters like the one Wei Wuxian is in. Lan Xichen and his friends are the ones who convince Lan Wangji to go along with the scheme of selling their songs/performance to that establishment and persuade Lan Wangji to at least see the place with them.

And you get the spectacle of the original movie, the jaunty music, and Wei Wuxian performing like he was born to occupy the spotlight in places like this. He is handsome and charming and plays instruments and sings beautifully and Lan Wangji hates it because it's not real. There is no soul here, no emotions beyond greed, it is performance purely for performance's sake.

Yet he still lets Lan Xichen convince him to meet Wei Wuxian in privacy, partly because at this point he thinks Wei Wuxian will very quickly reject him and partly because he wants to make Lan Xichen happy. (Again, no idea what led them to this city. But they are currently starving musicians who maybe didn't plan this--whatever this is--super well).

The mix-up happens (it's supposed to be Wen Chao in there) and Lan Wangji is alone with Wei Wuxian absolutely hating everything because Wei Wuxian is committed to his charming seducer act the second Lan Wangji walks through the door. Lan Wangji's not sure who he hates more; Wei Wuxian for the act, or himself for wanting to respond to the act.

So, now motivated by a heavy dose of panic, Lan Wangji whips out his guqin, places it as a barrier between the two, and launches into a song. He glues his gaze to the instrument, hoping that this might at least make Wei Wuxian pause.

He does, for a moment, and then another moment, and then another and another, until the only sound is Lan Wangji's music and the only motion his fingers flying over the strings.

When he moves onto the second song, he looks up, and almost misses the next note. Wei Wuxian isn't just quietly watching, he's enraptured. Gone are the obscene movements, teasing gaze, and charming grin. In their places are wide eyes, a small smile, and a soft expression as Wei Wuxian sways closer to the source of the music.

"That was beautiful," Wei Wuxian breathes after the second song, and Lan Wangji's fingers hover over the strings. He's too busy staring at the way Wei Wuxian's eyes flutter close for a moment as if still listening to Lan Wangji's song. "How do you feel about duets?"

Wei Wuxian doesn't wait for Lan Wangji's answer, scrambling off the plush bed and grabbing a dizi instead. When he sits back down across from Lan Wangji, his smile is bigger, like the grin from earlier, but it's still real, excited for the music.

They start to play a duet and it's beautiful.

It's beautiful and haunting and Lan Wangji knows within three notes that he will never forget it. It's in these notes that Wei Wuxian shares something raw and real, and Lan Wangji responds in turn. It should be scary to be this vulnerable with someone he wanted nothing to do with seconds ago, and he thinks he sees a spark of that same fear in Wei Wuxian's eyes when their gazes meet over their instruments. But then Wei Wuxian's eyes soften as if, like Lan Wangji, the music of the other makes him feel safe.

"Why are you here?" Lan Wangji asks when they finish. 

Even if Lan Wangji changes his mind about Wei Wuxian, his opinion of the place hasn't changed. This place doesn't deserve someone as bright and talented as Wei Wuxian.

But Wei Wuxian laughs, back to hiding things beneath lighter emotions.

"Where else would I be?"

"Somewhere real," Lan Wangji answers honestly, "Somewhere that deserves your brilliance."

Wei Wuxian's jaw drops.

"Lan Zhan, Lan Zhan," he says when he recovers, just like he did before when he teased Lan Wangji. But there's no teasing in his voice now, something stunned and breathless replacing it. "You shouldn't say stuff like that to someone like me. It might make me like you."

"Make music with me," Lan Wangji says instead of trying to argue with him.

"What?"

"I was supposed to ask if you would."

"If I would-"

"Play music, real music. Music I'll write just for you."

"Just for me," Wei Wuxian repeats.

"Just for you," Lan Wangji promises. The words spill from Lan Wangji as if he’s still pouring his soul into his music and has no trouble sharing what he feels.“For your smile, for your heart, and for your freedom. For setting you free from this place.” 

Wei Wuxian is super doubtful about leaving and relying on music (or relying on Lan Wangji and his music). He's not at all convinced that other people will actually love the type of music he just played with Lan Wangji, though Lan Wangji does get him to admit Wei Wuxian thinks of himself as talented. 

There's something else too, some other reason he's so resistant, and it's not because of his contract with the establishment or his astonishing lack of money despite working for the past three years.

Before Lan Wangji can try to convince Wei Wuxian further though, the others all burst in like in movie. Wen Chao is all huffy, but Wei Wuxian convinces him that Lan Wangji is planning on creating a truly stunning musical for him, etc etc.

Wen Chao agrees to support this concert and so begins Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji's "brainstorming" sessions and "performance practices", except there's even more pining in this version (in part because they are dumbasses). 

Like, they still haven't actually confessed they're in love with each other or kissed past the halfway point of the story, even though they are both far more intimate with each other than they've ever been with another person, confessing their dreams and fears to each other, sharing stories about the family they love and miss, talking about the ways they would want to change things if they could just change their own circumstances first. 

Wei Wuxian really does hate being stuck in one place, especially a place like this, though Lan Wangji quickly learns that he hides that, along with many other things, with jokes and teasing.

And listen, Lan Wangji has never been jealous before and he knows Wei Wuxian isn't technically his, but when he sees Wen Chao wrap his slimy arm around Wei Wuxian or leer at him as Wei Wuxian performs, Lan Wangji is 0.1 second away from fighting Wen Chao with his barefists alone.

So of course there is still the dramatic Roxanne scene because I love that song/scene (I can picture Nie Mingjue as the main man singing it but if I actually try to figure out who everyone else is/where everyone else is, this post will neVER END)

You would think at this point they finally confess their feelings for each other. After all, this is when Wei Wuxian unintentionally gives away how he feels about Lan Wangji in front of Wen Chao, driving him into a rage.

But Wei Wuxian has known he is dying this whole time, there's a reason he hasn't gotten the cure/had enough money for the cure. He also knows that Lan Wangji is meant for great things and great people who will not just love him, but stay by his side forever and support him forever and make him smile forever. Wei Wuxian doesn't deserve to hold him back from that, as he knows his memory will if he confesses to Lan Wangji before he dies.

Plus then he finds out about Wen Chao wanting to kill Lan Wangji and he definitely can't cling to Lan Wangji after that.

Lan Wangji doesn't want to be 'seflish' either or put Wei Wuxian in an uncomfortable situation, so he's been burying his confession until Wei Wuxian says something. So when Wei Wuxian tells Lan Wangji that he's decided to accept Wen Chao's proposal and he wants Lan Wangji to stay away, the latter half of that sounds true to Lan Wangji.

Yet Lan Wangji can't help but argue with the first part because "he doesn't love you. He doesn't truly hear you. He won't really free you."

Wei Wuxian just gives him a practiced smile that hurts Lan Wangji as much as a sword dicing up his heart.

"But he will take care of me, far away from this place," Wei Wuxian replies, "Better than anyone else could."

They both know that's not true, just like they know Wei Wuxian is not normally this callous, but Lan Wangji is too heart broken to argue for very long or very coherently, and other workers drag him out when he tries.

He tries to let Wei Wuxian go, he really does. He gets black-out drunk that night for the first time in his life, no memory of what happened after he started drinking or how Lan Xichen got him back to their home. While it might have erased those twelve hours of memory, it doesn't erase any memories of Wei Wuxian.

Everywhere Lan Wangji goes, he hears the song, their song, the duet they played together the first time they met and then modified again and again together to reflect both their hearts. Even when Lan Wangji manages not to think explicitly of Wei Wuxian, those soulful notes still echo in his mind. Even when he sleeps, the music glides through his dreams and drags him awake with a broken sob.

So he sneaks into the performance, backstage, to see Wei Wuxian. Not because he wants to buy Wei Wuxian for himself, but because if Wen Chao's money is what the other musician needs to be free, then Lan Wangji will give all that he's scraped together these past months.

It's messy and a little ugly as Wei Wuxian tries to push Lan Wangji away because he's afraid for Lan Wangji, Lan Wangji mistaking it as fear of him and only clinging harder in return. The sickness is finally dragging Wei Wuxian to death's doorway as well, and between that and his fear, he can't get anything out besides,

"please just go away."

They stumble onto the stage together, just like in the movie, where Lan Wangji finally gives up.

"You already have my heart," Lan Wangji says, in the middle of that stage, as the other musicians and audience members alike stare at Wei Wuxian's crumpled form and listen to Lan Wangji's broken confession. "You might as well take my money. At least that can make you happy."

Lan Wangji starts to leave, Wei Wuxian pushes himself up, and Lan Xichen, from backstage where he tried stopping the murder plot, whispers to Wei Wuxian that music will always be there even when our words fail us.

The notes of their song pierce the air, not just Lan Wangji's brain, and Lan Wangji turns slowly to see Wei Wuxian pouring all his yearning and all his love into his instrument. He never looks away from Lan Wangji, and when Wei Wuxian reaches the chorus, Lan Wangji gives in. He begins to play on his guqin as he walks back to the stage, back up the stairs, and back to Wei Wuxian's side.

"You have my heart too," Wei Wuxian tells him when they finish the song.

Finally, finally, they understand everything the other has been trying to say through music. They kiss on that stage as their song lingers in the air all around them.

And then, well. There's two ways this could go. There's of course the movie ending where Wei Wuxian finally succumbs to his illness, dying in Lan Wangji's arms immediately after their kiss. Lan Wangji never forgets Wei Wuxian, and spends the rest of his days wandering the world like Wei Wuxian wanted to, playing their song wherever he goes, the music haunting the souls of everyone who hears it.

OR

Because I can't guarantee a happy ending for my own life but I sure as hell can give one to characters, Wei Wuxian collapses in Lan Wangji's arms on that stage, coughing up blood like he's on the verge of death. They get him into a back room, the owner of the establishment finally revealing the condition Wei Wuxian couldn't bear to tell Lan Wangji.

But as everyone is panicking at the hopelessness of it all, two people burst into the room, one shouting and one weeping. No force on earth can stop them from rushing to Wei Wuxian's side when, after three years of desperate searching, they have finally traced the anonymous deliveries of money back to the brother who gave up all the possessions he had and exchanged his own health to cure his sick siblings.

They've brought a healer/cure with them (is this a magical sickness? a real one? a curse? idk but I love fantasy so I’m learning towards that) and Lan Wangji contributes his own money and they save Wei Wuxian.

Wei Wuxian never expected to wake up, but he does, and he does to both his siblings and the love of his life. There's a lot of crying, a little yelling, an abundance of apologies, plenty of promises, and even another kiss. There's more that needs to be said than can be said in that one miraculous evening, but when Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji look at each other, they know it will all be okay in the end. After all, they have plenty of time.

Since I already did this game once with my main blog URL, I hope you won’t mind me doing this with my Black Sails sideblog (which is rather abandoned atm but I promise I haven’t forgotten it and I’ll start posting there again eventually  I don’t know to whom I talking to maybe the 2-3 people who follow me both here and there lol)... the name is also longer, so more songs yay (as if you were asking that lmao)!! ;)

Andante, andante - Lily James (Mamma mia! 2 OST) // all right, I didn’t mean to return to my Mamma mia! obsession phase - it was bad enough when the first movie got out - but I got to listen to one song (which was not this one, but another song about a student kissing her teacher, rather creepy if you think about it but the music is so engaging it’s still stuck in my head, damn it) by chance and started roaming through the soundtrack of this sequel (which I haven’t seen yet tbh, actually by choice since I already know a thing about the story that upsets me a lot, but I guess I’ll eventually watch it because the songs aren’t bad, though I’ve had the impression that the level of silliness is not even close to the first movie and that’s what I actually enjoyed about it in the first place :p ) and I got to listen to this song and :’) - I’m not even one for love songs but this is so sweet and warm and intimate and Lily James’ voice is delightful so yeah, another one bound to be stuck in my head for days! also it doesn’t help that I’ve been thinking about Philinda slow dancing to this song I have a HUGE problem

Never give up on your dreams - Two Steps From Hell // HA, my mandatory TSFH mention when I talk about music! XD (and be grateful it’s the only one as I tried to make the list varied) One of my favourites (mh, I say that A LOT regarding TSFH but oh well :p ), so moving and epic and heart-lifting, I’m undone whenever I listen to this, like, I can’t function, it’s almost too much for me! :’)

Amazing grace - J2 (feat. Chelsea Caroline) // Oh, I love J2′s covers of songs, they’re so badass!! This is a more pop-rock/epic rendition than the usual hymn, but I find it great, and the singer’s voice is powerful and rich!

Taking the hobbits to Isengard - Erwin Beekveld // I legit have this song in my music playlist - I mean, how could I not?! XD This will NEVER be outdated and not legendary!! 

I’ve no more fucks to give - Thomas Benjamin Wild. Esp. // About this song I’m just going to say LIFE GOALS!!! This is the level I aspire to achieve hands down!

Only happy when it rains - Garbage // I blame the Captain Marvel soundtrack for bringing back this song, which rocks and sometimes is also a BIG mood!!

Northern lights - Gaelic Storm // aaaaaaand Gaelic Storm is another band that tends to pop up when I get to speak about music! I love, love, LOVE this song, it’s so touching and enchanting and soothing and, dare I say, romantic... <33

One day - Hans Zimmer // catch me crying whenever I hear this goddamn piece... especially the godforsaken end, man... you know the scene when it plays... ;_______;

Fat bottomed girls - Red Hot Chilli Pipers // whoo hoo, catch me headbanging and dancing all around at this!! I love the original song, of course, but this version with BAGPIPES!!!!!!!! INSTANT LOVE, it was!!!! (well, it does good on my self-esteem a bit as well, since I think I can consider myself a part of this “category” of ladies celebrated by the song ;) )

Today we rise - Luke Youngblood (Galavant OST) // have I begged you today to watch this show??!!  This is one of my absolute FAVOURITES in the whole soundtrack and I get to sing along proudly every chance I get (which happens basically when I’m alone, since I have to skip this soundtrack while I’m outside in public because if I listened to it I would surely start smiling and giggling like an idiot and people would certainly think me mad) ... lol, Sid always complained about never having the opportunity to do a proper performance and in the end he was given one of the most brilliant songs to sing!!! :D I’m almost, ALMOST tempted to follow him into battle - surely I’ll sing the hell out of it until the end, only to likely hide with the other peasants because well, once you think about what you’re singing you’re not exactly encouraged to pursue!! XD

Helvegen - Wardruna // wow, this song always sends me chills down my spine, so haunting and enchanting!!!

In the end - 2WEI // I blame AOS season 6′s trailer for making me listen to this, although I already heard other pieces of 2WEI... What can I say, I’m rather drawn to epic covers of songs (although I still love the original song to bits)...

El tango de Roxanne - Ewan McGregor, Jacek Koman, José Feliciano (Moulin Rouge OST) // I rewatched the movie not long time ago and this song never fails to fuck me up, I always arrive at the end choked up... I love the soundtrack of this movie!

Vespertine (My crimson bride) - Kamelot // Can’t explain why, but this song, rather than being a fucking WONDER, has also been an anchor for me when my grandmother died... I don’t know really why it kept playing in my head during that period, but it was actually a soothing balm for my wounded heart and my broken thoughts, so I’m really grateful to it for keeping me steady (well, as steady as I could have been in that circumstance)... I love this song (and its album) to bits!!!

Everybody needs somebody to love - The Blues Brothers // This song (and its soundtrack and movie) is a sure antidote to sadness for me, nothing more to say!!

Sailing for adventure (on the big blue wet thing XD) - Muppet Treasure Island OST // let’s end on a VERY serious note, shall we?! Yep, I totally have this song on my phone and every time I listen to it I feel like I could embark on a ship and sail away! (though I’m rather sure I’d end up joining the two “figureheads” singing “should have took the train!” because I may get sea sick or something XD ) Can we appreciate the human actors singing along though?! Well, apart from the marvelous Tim Curry, of course...
