#lisbon beach tours
Note
So do we have to wait 23h hours until we get a picture? And do we get a restaurant pic first and then a fan picture? // do we think his restaurant tour jacket will be apart of those pictures?
I don't think dude would survive, it was 28 degrees yesterday and extremely sunny in Lisbon ( yes I consider that hot already bc it is and we usually get even worse temperatures sometimes getting till 40 depending on the place)
The dude that always said he hates stuff like beach and too warm weather would literally melt his ass off
I was out for one hour to pick up my aunt at the bus station and I was sweating my t*ts off 😭
I'm still waiting for the beach papwalk. 😂
I hope he didn't forget the sunscreen. Oh and I think 28 degrees are hot.

home is (where you are; now)
(also on ao3; a continuation of sorts of lets you see the wonder of it all)
When Ava lands in Lisbon, she expects … Well, she’s not sure what she expects, but she doesn’t expect the sun, doesn’t expect the beach. It feels more like arriving at a vacation spot than it feels like coming home. (She knows why, though she doesn’t say it; knows that home isn’t here, now.)
(But it was, then.)
Her aunt, Rosa, is there to greet her, gathers Ava and her things into a hug that Ava burrows into, hoping, wishing to unearth some latent memory now that she’s standing on soil she once knew. Understands, suddenly, how a person could be compelled to kiss the ground, holy and consecrate.
She’s ushered into a car and while they sit in traffic, Rosa tells her about the cousins she’ll meet, the sights they can see, places they can visit, including -
“Only if you want to, of course,” Rosa says, glancing hesitantly at Ava before focusing back on the road.
Through the window, Ava watches glimpses of the ocean from in between the crush of buildings, wonders if she’d ever shared this view with her mother, back then. (Back when she was a child and everything was simple, a slate wiped clean, untouched, unharmed; a child, loved.)
“Yes,” Ava answers and smiles at her aunt because it’s true, because she’s grateful - for the offer, for being here, for being alive, again. She nods for herself, both now and then. “I want to.”
*
That night, Ava meets her uncle and her cousins, eats a ridiculous amount of food, drinks an incredible array of wine, goes to sleep laughing. They gather again the next day, this time with her cousins’ children in tow and they give Ava a grand tour around the city - she, though, insists that she pay for tickets to the museum, sneaks an extra order of pastel de nata when they get dessert after lunch, splashes and squeals along the shore as the little ones chase her in and out of the waves. (She makes sure to take pictures, for herself and for Beatrice, stories to retell and relive.)
They’re having dinner by the beach (Ava knows it’s obvious how much she loves the ocean; she wonders if it’s a shared trait because her relatives don’t seem to want to be too far from it either), sunburnt and water spent, sharing the most amazing spread of seafood Ava’s ever seen when she notices her aunt watching her eat. Her mouth is full so Ava tilts her head and raises her eyebrows in askance.
The smile that crosses Rosa’s face reminds Ava of an expression she’s seen before on Beatrice: a curious, cautious concern. “You pause sometimes when you’re eating,” her aunt says, the low light flickering across her face. Ava’s struck for a moment by how much Rosa and her mother look alike. They’d gone through photo albums during breakfast, pictures of the sisters as children, Ava as baby. Her mother, then, hadn’t been much older than Ava was now. Rosa pauses, looks away, then finally meets her gaze. “It’s like you’re waiting for something.”
Ava swiftly ducks her head even though it’s too late, even though she’s already been seen. She finishes her bite, washes it down with wine (thinks once more how she wishes Beatrice was here to taste it, to be here and feeling all of this with her; something in Ava is quick to believe that there’s a part of her that can). “I guess I am,” Ava admits while pulling at her napkin. Across the table the youngest child, a toddler, babbles as she bounces on her mother’s lap. It tugs fiercely at something deep in Ava’s chest.
“I keep waiting for a memory to come,” she softly explains, fiddles with the food on her plate. “I keep thinking that maybe this will be the bite, this will be the place that makes me remember.” She shrugs, eyes flickering up briefly. Sighs. “But I guess that’s too much to expect, you know? I was just a kid. It was a long time ago.”
When Ava finally looks up, her aunt’s lips are pressed tightly together, jaw trembling as she nods in understanding. “Well,” Rosa says, and her voice sounds like it’s being pulled from one, from somewhere deep, someplace fundamental, a shared wellspring that wets Ava’s eyes as well when Rosa continues, “You’re here now.”
Rosa takes up her glass - wine, and Ava wonders if she could turn water into wine, she’s already brought someone to life, what’s one more miracle in a life that’s been full of them, what’s one more life - and raises it towards Ava.
Ava lifts her own glass in response, and they tip towards each other. The sound of their meeting rings softly within the din of laughter and conversation, of being with family. Of being here.
(Here, where her mother is, and yet not.)
*
Ava had said yes when Rosa had asked but it takes three more days before they’re both ready. They climb into the car, just the two of them, and set towards the house Ava had once called home.
The traffic is light today, the sun high in the sky, and Rosa tells her about the house from behind a pair of sunglasses that shine in the sun and mirror Ava’s reflection. Every time Rosa turns to glance at her, Ava gets a glimpse of her own face as well, a shifting scene of nerves and grief, uncertainty and grim resolve.
When they arrive, it’s exactly as Rosa’s described. It’s more of a cottage than a house, worn with age but well-loved. There’s no one to greet them at the door, just old furniture and boxes as the family uses it mostly for storage now; a place for things to go when they can’t let go.
Her mother’s room remains the same, however. Rosa had told her in the car about the crooked quilt her mother had made covering the bed, the small statue of the Virgin Mary in the corner, the vanity that Ava would sit on as she giggled and did her hair and makeup together with her mother every morning. The room is bright and Ava tries to picture it, tries to feel what it was like, being here, being her - who she was then: young, a child, a daughter.
She tries, here where the boundary between past and present feels whisper thin, as if she could press through it if she stands just so, looks at the sun just right; as if she could hear her mother’s voice and answer with her own. But it’s all wrong - Ava’s older now, will be older than her mother was back then (will be older than she ever had the chance to be). Ava stands at the vanity and looks at her reflection in the mirror. Wonders briefly what her mother would have thought of her hair, her makeup, of her.
(She doesn’t know, now. But she knows, then, what was true, two simple truths that she had held in her heart: that she was loved, that she was not alone.)
They don’t stay long. Ava takes a couple pictures of the house, including one of the backyard with it’s overgrown garden and a bench nestled underneath a tree. She’s looking through the photos on her phone, deciding which ones to send to Beatrice as her aunt locks the front door. Rosa’s muttering and jiggling the finicky lock when something finally comes.
It’s not a memory, not really. It’s more a feeling, something familiar slipping over her, a blanket tucked under her chin, turning the page of an oft-read book. Something that once was known and is known again - like how the sky is blue, how sand feels between her toes, how her life has been and will always be filled with love.
“Ava?”
Rosa’s sunglasses are on top of her head and the resemblance strikes Ava again. ‘It’s the eyes,’ she realizes. Recognizes, because she’s inherited them too. It warms her, standing at the door to her old home, not like blood spilled but blood shared. Ava had been so sure, before, that she would be the last. She’s not, now.
Ava breathes in and smiles, tremulous and true. “I’m fine. Let’s go home,” she says, bursting and full - of love, of gratitude, of then where home was first learned here on these steps, of now where she has not just one, but many.

Hi yes, aware I haven't posted on tumblr in months, but June was just busy, and July was my first proper Eurotrip!! Went around Portugal, Spain, Italy, Austria, Belgium, and then back out again through Spain! ~Momentous~ Highlight reel that is in no way comprehensive:
Favourite food(s): Topfenstrudel in Salzburg, prosciutto/mozzarella in Venice, chili/lime plantain chips in Barcelona, fresh anchovies in Cinque Terre, raspberry donut in Lisbon, churros in Madrid, seafood paella in BCN, and honestly just some plain old hangover bacon/eggs in Venice while I slowly woke up after the festival going on (but yeah topfenstrudel was #1, when I took a bite I think I said something to effect of "are you kidding me")
Favourite drink: Love a bitter orange cocktail, so Italy was all about aperol spritzes, negronis, and americanos <3 Bonus points for the liter-sized beer steins in Salzburg too
Favourite hike: Cinque Terre with @enbouton! I just tried to keep up. Our Toledo hike was a close second though! Don Quixote realness
Most exciting moment: sitting in a square in Venice waiting for my best friend from when I lived in Korea to arrive, literally vibrating with excitement at seeing her again after 8 years omg (she lives in Australia but was in Europe too around the same time, and we made it WORK!)
Best tour: did a Sound of Music bike tour in Salzburg and it was an absolute delight. So was the beergarden date and [redacted] with my tour guide lmao heyo (context, we were extremely clickety from the get go much to the amusement of the rest of the tour group so it was like 'let's meet up when you're not literally at work lol'. He took me to a proper Austrian beer garden the next night and honestly, date for the ages lol, yay for fleeting love in foreign countries ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )
Most serendipitous planning/non-planning: booked my first night in Venice completely unaware at the time there was a huge festival happening, and was on the right island for the fireworks. Also my timing worked out that I got to do Barcelona with a friend from home so that was fun too
Best museum: this glorious cathedral in Toledo, and also the Hergé museum just outside Brussels
Best restaurant: first proper dinner out with my friends in Venice at this restaurant by the Ponte dell'Accademia. The pic 3rd down on the left was the view and we ordered everything. *Runner-up was this fantastic little diner in Madrid that had churros and horchata and we ended up going twice lol
Travel bloopers: Italian rail strike and heat rash in Spain lol #attractive Oh and got screwed by one booking website lol but I'm hoping to get that refunded. Also my flights out to Europe were screwy!
Best travel eavesdropping: I overheard a waiter in Brussels speaking to an older woman who was very anxious about ordering something a specific way I think, and he replied in French "Madame, this is your house, order how you like" and I just thought that was a very classy thing to sayyyy
Most relaxing day: had a picnic/laundry/shopping/movie day in Padova and it was just the ticket. Also by the time I hit Barcelona I was pretty wiped out and made the executive decision to wait in no lines or do any busy tourist attractions in favour of beach time, and that was WISE
Travel tears: Saying goodbye to Aussie friend before my train to Vienna and watching her disappear back into the Venetian throng
Favourite outfit bought: your girl was backpacking so space was Limited, but got a little orange dress in BCN, a white/green blouse in Padova, and some silky trousers in Toledo I'm still summoning up the nerve to wear here. Oh and a raincoat my Brussels airbnb host offered to sell me for 20 euros and I'm pretty sure it was worth a LOT more than that lol but it was very chic!
Wardrobe win: this lightweight long black skirt with convenient leg slits for walking. Came in clutch many times
Wardrobe fail: My sneakers were great at first but the 5 terre hike cracked something in the soles and and I started getting agonizing blisters. By the time I hit Salzburg I hobbled off the train right into an h&m, bought the first affordable pair of sneakers I saw, and tossed the old ones out
Prettiest city: maybe Florence just because there seemed to be something unreasonably beautiful everywhere you turned your head. This could apply to most of Italy though.
Best vibes: Something about Salzburg!!! Mountains, opera, amazing food, cute tour guides, and misty skies...I'd have stayed longer if I could have instead of pushing on to Brussels, but my next bookings weren't refundable. Brussels was cool in its way but honestly just reminded me a lot of Montreal lol. Also Toledo had a nice relaxing atmosphere, I'd like to go back and spend more time in Spain for sure
Best miscommunication: the guy across from me on my train to Padua who saw me reading Moby Dick and asked "Are you reading that because of the whale?"... After some confusion he explained that the book apparently features in the movie The Whale lmao but I thought he was asking if I was reading it for the character of the whale?? asdfgh. I was like "...yeah I've heard the whale is great" lmao.
Best sleep: hand to god it was my party hostel in Barcelona lol. Rowdy downstairs, super quiet and comfy bunks upstairs.
Favourite city: Venice is going to win this one. Fireworks, festivals, seeing one of my best friends after 8 years, postcard views on every street, and late nights catching up and drinking wine listening to the water lapping at the canals? Absolute dream.
All around lovely trip and so glad I planned something instead of rotting away all summer! I hadn't travelled properly in aaaages, and it was a good mix of solo travel + travel with friends, and saw a solid amount of places too. I'm convinced the best way to travel is to talk to the people, eat their food, and just wander around and soak up the sights, and I feel like I got to do all those things and then some 🎉
Anyways I'll probs post a little more before work starts back up, but then I'll probably be taking another tumblr break! It was very nice to unplug and I also have some creative projects I'm working on, so I'm hoping to focus more on those this semester!

We spent Friday with a tour company that likes to go off the beaten path, called We Hate Tourism Tours (we’ve learned that the Portuguese have a very sarcastic sense of humor). They took us to the Mountains of Sintra and beach dunes of Cascais, sites of Portuguese royalty escapism during historical hardships.
We were two of six on the tour group, but the other 4 wanted an exclusive tour in German without any pesky English. So they split us up and we spent the entire day with our tour guide, Mannu, handcrafting a personalized tour.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the mountains we visited Miradouro de Santa Eufémia, Sintra National Palace, Palace and Park Biester (Cat will add a part 2 with more pictures from the palace), and Palace and Park Montserrate. The mountain would naturally be bare granite, but it's ideal climate encouraged the Portuguese to plant forests of pine trees (lumber for Portuguese ships) and cork trees (cork for wine bottles). The palaces of Sintra were royal retreats especially during the hot summer months and the Castle of the Moors (the right most red arrow below) still stands from the 700s.
Tumblr media
Mannu took us to Pão Saloio (roughly translated to Hillbilly Bread) for a classic rural lunch of breads, chorizo, pork belly, cheese, olives, and tomatoes and Cat was introduced to Green Wine - wine made with grapes that are not fully ripened due to the weather conditions of Portugal. We knew it was going to be good when we saw a group of police officers hanging around smoking and having their coffees.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our last stop on the mountain was the western most point of continental Europe, Farol do Cabo da Roca (the left most red arrow below and pictured below).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We made it way down to the beachy dunes of Cascais. Cascais was a retreat for some King I forget the name of who sought to get away from the throngs of people following him all the time so he went to the village or fishermen as he thought the smell would keep the bourgeois away...
Tumblr media
After many stops admiring the waves (Mannu was a surfer and could not believe the conditions on the day), we circled back to Lisbon where we had a lovely dinner of tempura green beans, steak, cod, clam rice, truffle mashed potatoes and another glass of green wine for Cat. I struggled to stay awake during dinner, so Cat only made two pit stops for shopping as we walked back to our airbnb.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I was asleep by 8 :)

Portugal is a captivating country known for its rich culture, stunning landscapes, and vibrant traditions. From its beautiful beaches to its historic architecture, Portugal has become a must-visit destination for travelers worldwide. The country is famous for a variety of things that reflect its unique heritage, such as soulful Fado music and the production of world-renowned Port wine. The intricate azulejos (ceramic tiles) and mouthwatering cuisine further add to Portugal’s charm. Whether exploring its ancient castles or indulging in fresh seafood, visitors are drawn to the diverse experiences Portugal offers. This introduction highlights some of the most iconic elements that make Portugal famous and beloved across the globe.
Tumblr media
Here are some of the most famous things in Portugal.
1. Beautiful Beaches and Coastal Scenery:
Tumblr media
Portugal's coastline is one of the main draws of the country because it is home to some of Europe's most beautiful beaches. Beach lovers will find nirvana on the nation's beaches, which range from the golden, sun-drenched coasts of the Algarve in the south to the untamed, rocky beaches along the western coast. Particularly the Algarve is well-known for its immaculate beaches, glistening waters, and striking cliffs that provide picture-perfect vistas. Because of its breathtaking natural beauty, Praia do Marinha, one of the Algarve's most famous beaches, is frequently named as one of the best in all of Europe. Beaches like Nazaré, which are further up the coast, are well-known for their enormous waves and draw professional surfers.
2. Vast cultural history and preserved architecture:
Tumblr media
Portugal's magnificent architecture, which combines a variety of architectural styles, including Gothic, Baroque, and Manueline (a particular Portuguese style named after King Manuel I), is a testament to the country's rich history. Some of the most well-known historical sites, such as the Jerónimos Monastery and Belém Tower, which are both UNESCO World Heritage Sites, may be found in the nation's capital, Lisbon. Constructed in the earliest part of the 16th century, the Belém Tower presently remains as a representation of Portugal's Age of Exploration and was used as a ceremonial entrance and fortification for the city. A masterwork of Manueline architecture, the Jerónimos Monastery is distinguished by its elaborate carvings and striking façade.
3. Portuguese Soul's Heart, Fado Music:
Tumblr media
One of the most well-known and deeply felt facets of Portuguese culture is fado, or traditional Portuguese music. Fado is known for its emotional lyrics that frequently discuss longing, love, and life's sorrows. Its lyrical, sorrowful melodies have earned it recognition as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity by UNESCO. The history of fado dates back to the 19th century in Lisbon, where it originated as a working-class form of expression before swiftly expanding across the nation. Fado is still performed today in the Alfama and Bairro Alto neighborhood of Lisbon, where the music is preserved by traditional Fado homes. Portuguese guitars are gently strumming while "fadistas," or Fado singers, pour their hearts out.
4. Renowned Port Wine:
Portugal is widely known for its sweet and rich fortified wine, Port, which has won praise from all over the world. Port wine is aged in barrels and produced only in the Douro Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is available in a range of styles, including vintage, tawny, and Ruby. The center of the Port wine business is the city of Porto, which gave rise to the wine. Along the banks of the Douro River are countless cellars and tasting rooms. When taking a guided tour of these vaults, visitors to Porto can sample some of the best vintages while learning about the age-old techniques used to manufacture Port wine. Apart from Port, Portugal produces several very good wines in areas like Alentejo.
5. The symbolic Portuguese tiles, Azulejos:
Azulejos, the stunning, frequently blue and white ceramic tiles that cover numerous buildings around the nation, are among the most recognizable and well-known features of Portuguese art and architecture. Azulejos were brought to Portugal in the fifteenth century, and since then, they have been an essential component of Portuguese culture, serving as both beautiful art and narrative devices. These tiles, which include elaborate patterns and religious or historical scenes, can be seen on the exterior of churches, palaces, and residences. Azulejos are found everywhere in towns like Lisbon and Porto, where they enliven the urban landscape with their vivid colour on walls, floors, and even metro stations.
6. Delectable Portuguese Food:
Portuguese food is popular among foodies all around the world because of its reputation for being straightforward, flavourful, and fresh. Portuguese cuisine heavily emphasizes seafood, with mainstays like grilled sardines, octopus, and bacalhau (salted cod) among the dishes. Bacalhau is so popular that there are reportedly over 365 different methods to prepare it—one for every day of the year. Pastéis de Nata, or custard tarts with a crispy, flaky crust that are best eaten warm out of the oven, are another delectable delicacy from Portugal. Any tourist should try these delicious delights.
Conclusion:
Portugal is a treasure trove of cultural, historical, and natural wonders that continue to captivate visitors. From its breathtaking beaches and historic landmarks to the soulful Fado music and world-class Port wine, the country offers unforgettable experiences for all. The intricate azulejo tiles and delicious cuisine further enhance its charm. To explore these famous attractions, obtaining a Portugal visa is the first step for travelers wishing to experience the country's beauty firsthand. Whether you're wandering through Lisbon's ancient streets or enjoying the coastal views of the Algarve, Portugal promises a rich blend of tradition, art, and flavor that leaves a lasting impression on all who visit.

Impactful Corporate Responsibility Initiatives in Gibraltar – Acquarius
Tumblr media
Acquarius COO Gareth Cross highlights the company’s CSR initiatives in Gibraltar, emphasizing community engagement and environmental sustainability.
Acquarius views its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme extremely seriously. A vital aspect of our business operations in Gibraltar, we feel that CSR demonstrates our commitment to ethical, social and environmental concerns beyond merely improving “the bottom line”. Indeed, managing our staff expectations and developing them into a cohesive team is fundamental to maximising our profits – in a socially responsible way.
‍We consider CSR as one the fundamental pillars of our business approach and we seek to integrate social and environmental issues into all our operations. The interaction with a range of Gibraltar stakeholders including our staff, charities and organisations leads to sustainable ongoing development whilst achieving a positive impact consistently.
Acquarius’ contribution within a CSR setting includes a number of diverse initiatives aimed at benefiting both local people and the environment – provided those goals ally with our own values and objectives. We include as many of the staff as possible on our CSR progress thus the chances of a mis-alignment are very much reduced.
‍We manage our corporate contribution in two ways. Philanthropically, we donate regularly to several local social causes. Through this assistance, we are looking to make a tangible difference in our local community. We aim to encourage our staff and indeed other local businesses to make similar contributions as by cooperating and working together we can make a real difference. Recent examples of our philanthropic efforts include sponsoring the “Ladies that Rock the Rock” event as well as a forthcoming celebration when John Mascarenhas, one of our longest serving colleagues, will be inducted into the Gibraltar Music Hall of Fame.
‍We have posted content in the past about our commitment to Wellbeing in the Office and in particular the sterling work done by local group GibSams. We have agreed to be a corporate sponsor at their forthcoming Wellbeing Seminar and our Managing Director, Oliver Andlaw, will be sitting on one of the panels. Thus we demonstrate that contribution need not be purely financial but include personal interaction too, which can in itself be extremely rewarding for all concerned.
‍We have sponsored a float in the annual Three Kings Cavalcade, which is always an exuberant display of colour and sound and for Gibraltarians marks the end of the Christmas festivities. We support local sporting prowess too and were proud sponsors of this year’s Gibraltar Rugby youth tour to Lisbon.
‍Apart from philanthropy, corporate volunteer programs enable employees to engage directly with communities by offering time and their skill sets. This fosters a sense of social responsibility within the team facilitating meaningful interactions with the community. There are those who view this kind of contribution as being more important than merely “writing a cheque”. Acquarius believes that both are important. Recent examples of volunteering in the community include a beach clean – with a second already planned for later in May.
‍Furthermore, corporate contributions in CSR often extend to environmental sustainability initiatives. Companies invest in renewable energy projects, implement energy-efficient technologies, or adopt eco-friendly practices in their operations to reduce their carbon footprint and mitigate environmental impact. We are already playing our part in all of these important areas.
‍In conclusion, corporate contribution in a CSR setting encompasses a range of initiatives, including philanthropy, volunteer programs and environmental sustainability efforts. By actively participating, Acquarius is able to demonstrate our commitment to being responsible corporate citizens whilst contributing positively to the well-being of society and Gibraltar as a whole.
We are delighted to share our thoughts on these areas. If other businesses, both locally and further afield, wish to become involved, please contact us.
