One of his agents told him that guys in Paris were looking for a Playmobil movie, and he had kids who loved Playmobil, so he took the offer, thinking about how his kids always imitated the movies he watched. Also, they sang a lot, and his daughter always put wings on toys.

Playmobil: The Movie (2019)
Tumblr media
Remember your reaction when you heard The Lego Movie was under construction? To everyone’s surprise, it turned out to be inspired visually and story-wise. The movie you thought you were getting? That’s Playmobil: The Movie.
While sneaking into a Playmobil exhibit, Charlie (Gabriel Bateman) is apprehended by his sister, Marla (Anya Taylor-Joy), when they're sucked into the Playmobil world. Transformed into a super-strong Viking, Charlie is kidnapped by Emperor Maximus (voiced by Adam Lambert) to serve as a gladiator in his colosseum. With the help of a food truck driver named Del (Jim Gaffigan), Marla hits the road, traveling through multiple worlds in search of her brother.
The advertisements have focussed almost exclusively on Rex Dasher (voiced by Daniel Radcliffe), a Bond-like spy. He’s the best part of the film… and is only in it for 20 minutes, tops. What the commercials aren’t telling you is that this film is a musical. Who can blame the marketing team? Every number is an afterthought. You’ll hardly realize Adam Lambert (yes, that one) is playing the bad guy. Perhaps sensing the material he was given was junk, he pours little enthusiasm in the single number he’s given.
It’s impossible not to compare Playmobil: The Movie to The Lego Movie which is why the utter lack of imagination comes as such a shock. Surely they've seen that film and they must know we have. Two kids getting sucked into a fantasy world has been done to death. The only way it could’ve been exciting was for it to be gut-bustingly hilarious, which it isn’t. The dull plot, diet-water songs, make it all feel cheap. Marla and Charlie travel to a Wild West world, a Roman world, a James Bond world, a Viking world, and a fairy tale world. Instead of being fields where imagination can grow untethered from popular brands, they feel like placeholders for properties the film couldn’t afford.
Another glaring flaw is the visuals. Playmobil toys have a particular aesthetic. They definitely have an appeal, particularly when you see all the sets and figures displayed in those initial shots at the convention. Once transformed, Marla initially struggles to walk and move around with her limited articulation. No knees or elbows and only claw-like hands… until she spontaneously has elbows and knees and can move around. I’m not saying it would’ve been easy to construct and shoot a story “made with Playmobil figures" but The Lego Movie did it. Numerous pictures have. Cars for example. The point is, if you’re truly passionate about a story and the world it’s set in, you’ll find make it work. In many shots, you’ll see that animals have fur when obviously, the toys do not. Why even transform your protagonists into Playmobil figures… if you’re not actually going to?
If Playmobil: The Movie realized what it really was, it could've worked. Instead, it never attempts to be anything beyond a commercial. (Theatrical version on the big screen, December 12, 2019)

Where do we begin with Lino DiSalvo? Thankfully that’s a question I don’t need to answer as IMDB has done a great job summarizing his career since graduating from VFS long ago. Allow them the honour below!
“Lino DiSalvo is an American animator, film director, writer and voice actor. Born in Brooklyn, New York and raised in Franklin Square, Long Island. As a child, DiSalvo was a fan of the early animated feature films from Disney and then, as a teenager, became inspired to pursue animation after seeing The Lion King in 1994. With the encouragement of his parents, he left for Vancouver, Canada. After graduating from Vancouver Film School he joined Walt Disney Animation Studios. DiSalvo spent almost 17 years at Disney and served as Head of Animation on Frozen. His other credits include supervising animator on Tangled and Bolt; and animator on Meet the Robinsons, Chicken Little, 102 Dalmatians and Reign of Fire. He served as Creative Director for Paramount Animation before joining Paris-based, ON Animation Studios (producers of 2016's The Little Prince) as Head of Creative. His directorial debut, Playmobil: The Movie, based on an original story of his, is set for release on August, 2019. DiSalvo has also voiced the characters of "Vinnie the Pigeon" in Bolt, "Gristletoe Joe" in Prep & Landing: Naughty vs. Nice, and "Robotitron" in the upcoming Playmobil: The Movie. DiSalvo is currently developing his next animated feature, The Badalisc, which is inspired by Italian folklore and draws heavily from his cultural heritage.”

Playmobil The Movie (2019)
In today's review, I play with the next best thing to awesome. As I attempt a #positive review of the 2019 animated film Playmobil The Movie #AnyaTaylor-Joy #GabrielBateman #JimGaffigan #DanielRadcliffe #AdamLambert #KenanThompson #MeghanTrainor
While the field of children’s construction toys has always been competitive, some names go on to have an unfortunate negative connotation. One notable example is Playmobil, while not as universally beloved as Lego, with its perceived lack of action, and famous faces. They still maintain a loyal following. In 2019, the underdog of the children’s toy market, brought out the big guns to counter to…

Here’s another video I really like by Lino DiSalvo, which starts out talking about how Tangled animated what characters were thinking and not what they were saying, so it relied more on body language and making their eyes alive.
