A while back, Legend was on a solo mission that had led him into an asteroid field and his ship took damage. Luckily, there was a space station nearby that he could land on and try for repairs. The Windfish Station was long abandoned but the power was still running. After landing only sort of crashing into the hanger he was greeted by the stations A.I., Marin. Marin helps Legend locate parts for his ship and she asks him to tell her about his adventures.

The station is old and crumbling, it wont last for much longer. Legend asks Marin if she wants to come with him. She says yes. But she cant leave without making sure the station and the data on it cant be claimed by monsters. So legend suggests blowing it up. Marin is sad but agrees. But she has always wanted to see more than the station so she is excited.

Legend repairs his ship and sets charges around the station.

Marin doesnt survive being extracted from the stations computer.

I just love Link's Awakening and for me it has one of the saddest endings and premises in the whole saga.

wait can we hear about legend and marin in the cryptid au? O:

Absolutely!

Honestly, I haven’t changed much about Marin haha! The story of Link’s Awakening is pretty much exactly the same in canon as it is to my au, so there’s not much to say there, but I CAN talk about Legend’s relationship with her and how it effects him long term.

(Under the cut because this got longer than I expected!)

Marin was Legend’s first love. She was beautiful, kind, and had the clearest voice he’d ever heard. (And he’s Mer, he literally grew up around people with beautiful singing voices. He himself has a hypnotic, enamoring voice- when he sings. Which is… rarely).

He and Marin would make music together, her with her voice and him with his instruments. He’d never sing for her- which is something that he deeply regrets, now, but that can’t be helped. His reasoning was that she was so precious- so beautiful- that he could never bring himself to even try to join her melody with his own voice. He could never take her place.

He was ready to spend the rest of his life with her. On the peaceful shores of Koholint, snug in the safety of Mabe Village, far from any princesses who needed saving or a darkness sealing sword. He was happy to listen to Marin’s stories over the sound of rolling waves for hours- he could get lost in her eyes. That smile. That voice.

But Marin wasn’t happy. Legend knew that for as kind and innocent as she was, she had an adventurer’s spirit. She would pester him about where he came from, what life was like off the island. When Link had to escort her to the Animal Village, she would enthusiastically insist on taking every detour, wanting to explore every inch of the island. Legend admired that about her.

She was too big a personality for such a small island, he supposed. So he promised himself that once he woke the Wind Fish and he could leave the island, they’d explore the world together. She wanted to follow him, she had tried to wake the Wind Fish on her own. She was ready.

Who was Legend to deny her?

A fool.

Legend was a fool.

A horrible, awful fool.

He’d killed her.

He’d killed them all.

As he pulled himself onto the floating pieces of his boat, Legend felt nothing but grief. The horizon line stretched on forever at all sides, unobstructed. Koholint island had disappeared, and so had everything on it. Everyone.

The Wind Fish flew above him and he swore he could still hear her voice, but it faded into the rolling waves as the deity lazily floated away from him. Legend reached out, as if he could catch it before it disappeared entirely, to hold it close and never let go, but… but she was not coming back.

Legend bowed his head and cried then, screaming out his agony to an empty world, alone and confused and so so sorry-

He’d killed her.

Was she ever even alive in the first place? Was she even real? The sparkle in her eyes, the sweet melody of her laugh. When the sun shone on her hair, looking almost like fire as she walked along the shore. Footprints in the sand, two pairs, side by side.

Yes, she is as real. She was real, and now she’s gone.

Legend sat for hours, dazed and disoriented, staring at the spot on the horizon that Koholint should sit. And as the sun burned his skin and tears stung his eyes, he thought of the life he could have had. A life he yearned for. Marin at his side, sharing sweet melodies with each other. They’d travel the world- she’d charm every stranger they’d come across and he’d keep her from harm. Maybe they would return to Koholint, after their adventuring was done, and they’d settle into a calm life in Mabe Village, where the children play and the birds sing and the sun is always shining.

Maybe, he could have had a happy ending.

It was… a good dream.

But verily, it be the nature of dreams to end.

Now, Legend is a very different person. He has not made peace with Marin’s death (?). He loves her, even now, and doesn’t know what he’s supposed to do with that. His adventures had hardened him, making him cold and prickly. Others might steer clear of his bad attitude, not knowing that beneath that tough exterior is just a broken, scared young man.

• Singing is very very important to Mer. I’m making a whole comic about it! It’s really meant for Mer to sing with/to each other, weaving harmonies together with their voices. Legend won’t sing for just anyone- he’s so separated from his culture that he rarely sings at all.

• He sings with Ravio, though. And when he’s thinking too hard about Marin.

• SPEAKING OF RAVIO. He’s very understanding of Legend’s grief. He acknowledges that he loved someone else before he loved him, and he knows that it doesn’t mean that Legend loves him any less. When Legend gets sad about Marin, they talk about her for hours. They sing for her. And Ravio gives him lots and lots of hugs. Marin wouldn’t want him to be unhappy, and Ravio’s not about to let her down.

• Legend’s a big tough strong hero man. Until a person sings one (1) pretty song. Then all bets are off.

• He was probably on Koholint for a Very Long Time. I like to think that from his perspective, he was there for YEARS. And then woke up like nothing ever happened. Like you know how you dream entire days and then wake up after only like three hours? Like that but like a million times worse.

• He probably has a VERY HARD TIME trusting his surroundings. He probably believes that having someone like Ravio in his life is too good to be true, and maybe sometimes he’s afraid that he’s stuck in another dream. And he’ll wake up and it will all disappear again.

• I’ve talked a lot about Time and Sky and how they don’t trust each other. But I need you to know that the MOMENT that Legend finds out that Time is a God, he looses all trust in him. He goes from admiring him to absolutely siding with Sky. Only, where Sky is fearful, Legend is openly antagonistic. Because Time knows every deity. He knows the Wind Fish. And Time ALSO has the ability to warp reality. Legend doesn’t like that. Understandably

I’m getting incoherent at this point so I’ll stop now. I know I got so off topic- like only half of this actually answers your question- but thank you so much for asking! I love talking about my boys haha!

I read somewhere about that Koholint island is somewhat inspired by the Ryukyu islands. I don’t know much about them, but I’m determined to learn more about the geography, culture and people who live there, and I am especially interested in implementing it into my Marin redesigns/Links Awakening art.

If anyone has anything to share, perhaps some helpful links or even better, personal experience, feel free to contact me! I love these kinds of stuff.

Happy 30th Anniversary to Links Awakening!

I wanted to just do something quick and cute for this anniversary since that was my experience with the game. It doesn't take too long to finish and just going around the island is cute especially in the remake.

So naturally I spend almost 19 hours on this with the detailed background. I'm a character artist who doesn't have much practice with backgrounds so obviously make a super detailed one for the "quick and cute" anniversary piece great logic.

Anyway hope u like the piece lmao, I went really far out of my comfort zone with it.
