I've finalized all of my fangan base designs (...I think) and look, the most important part of the entire height reference chart:

This is uhhhh nothing that will be playable any time soon, but I'm aiming for an honest-to-god full (fan) game experience. :) First trial has eighteen different truth bullets, this protag has her own unique mechanic, I'm building things out in Unity, etc. etc. etc.
I am GOING FOR IT, because setting a high creative bar and forcing yourself to push yourself is how development happens!
I'm moving from left to right and including the name/talent/MTBI in text below for readability. I included the MBTI here because I tied each one of them to an MBTI archetype as a fun self challenge (hey, sixteen people!) and so you can look to see who you match up with.
Every single talent is plot-relevant by the end of the game, at minimum. Many are plot-critical. I didn't want anyone to feel like wasted space.
Emi (Tailor, INFJ) - Sweet and humble, she's the type to just wear a standard school uniform. She focuses on assisting others, so she's always got her equipment ready if someone needs something mended.
Akari (Actress, ENFJ) - THE BEARER OF THE AHOGE. Famous ever since she started as a child star, she's always had every life decision made for her by her agent or stage parents. Sounds like you need some character development, girl!
Minata (Gardener, INFP) - Shows off detailed scientific knowledge more suited for a "Botanist" title, but he goes by Gardener for a reason. Practical and kind, he's the type to show up in a working outfit.
Hana (Cinematographer, ISFP) - Has earned awards for her work, yet currently struggles to get attached to new films. Design-wise, her formal presentation is her trying to compensate for that career struggle and look older. Girl should be on LinkedIn, she wants to N E T W O R K.
Momoko (???, ENTP) - Picture a walking pair of 🖕🏼🖕🏼. But. Like. A funny one. Don't worry, girl; as a ???, you're plot-important! You're sure to stick around! (Ignore the muffled Rantaro voice.) I actually had a very specific inspiration for her look, but it's a spoiler for why she's actually there and what her identity ends up being.
Maeko (Director, ISTP) - Three movie-related talents, by now. Is that plot-relevant? An artifact of me being near the Hollywood Sign? MAYBE BOTH? (It's both.) Anyway, Maeko is willing to Commit to the Bit of whatever she's working on, hence showing up in that old-fashioned director's outfit. She knows how the whole Ultimates thing works.
Shin (Statistician, INTJ) - My MBTI sign. :) As a kid, Shin decided that the mathematician in Jurassic Park was totally cool. That ended up steering him toward ear spikes and hair streaks instead of sweater vests. Still gotta have glasses, though.
Riko (Astronomer, INTP) - Riko is clueless about basically everything besides star maps, including "how to act like a normal teenager" or "how to stand comfortably." She gets a generic uniform (with constellation tights) because she wouldn't have the slightest clue where to start, otherwise.
Moriaki (Salesman, ESFP) - Heya pal 👉🏼👉🏼 Thanks for stopping by for a chat 👉🏼👉🏼 I definitely won't make any deals I can't handle 👉🏼👉🏼 KHAKIS 👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼👉🏼
Ayame (Journalist, ENTJ) - I don't think it's much of a spoiler to say that an investigative journalist is a good fit as one of the hard carries in trials. She zips around to stories on her motorcycle, hence the boots, jacket, and sunglasses :)
Satoru (Historian, ISTJ) - What an asshole. (He has my favorite of everyone's FTEs.)
Hiro (Fire Fighter, ESTJ) - A fire fighter. Literally named Hiro. His existence as a character is NOT. SUBTLE. Add in his first aid training, and you have someone too good to be true. (Maybe...?)
Katori (Beach Volleyball, ENFP) - Obviously, this design had to exist if I'm trying to respect many (but not all) of the tropes. Laid-back, optimistic, and totally into manifesting positive outcomes. She's basically an insta influencer who found herself in a killing game.
Katsuro (Rock Climbing, ESTP) - HIS SISTER WAS THE ONE TO PROPOSE THESE DUMBASS THEMED OUTFITS, FYI.
Ren (Bodyguard, ESFJ) - You might be big as hell, but that doesn't look like much of a bodyguard outfit, bro 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
Daichi (Outdoorsman, ISFJ) - A second huge dude! BREAKING THE MOLD. (Actually, you might have noticed that there are four pretty ripped dudes, and that is in fact plot-relevant at multiple points. It's not only me going 'thirst traps for both sides.' Anyway.) I'd loosely planned out his outfit (flannel shirt, timberland boots, etc.), but I also wanted to involve a school uniform somehow. The only way he could fit into one: ripping his blazer's arms off to turn it into a vest.
SO, there they are. :) I'm tens of thousands of words into this fangan script, have all the trials, evidence, major plot beats, and the ending mapped out, and a 100+ CC0-license 3D objects + locations plus several hundred sound effect files stockpiled. It's happening! Slowly. But it's happening! I will try my very best to make a fun, engaging game.

so me and my friend are both starting grad school in the fall (i'm starting my masters, my friend is starting their phd) and they said that at their school they're basically required to make and curate a stem/professional social media account and i'm kind of concerned and worried about having to do that at my school (they haven't told us we have to yet, but i'm worried they will). i was wondering what your thoughts on that are, and if you're required to do that in your program?
i don't like the idea of having to perform online professionalism while in a graduate program, and feeling forced to be chronically online in a period of my life where i am studying and working and doing research and TAing. it just feels like unncessary stress. i already have a linkedin, why isn't that enough???😭😭😭😭

the only "social media" account we were required to create was a google scholar profile, and I have social media in quotes because. well. it's google scholar. I think we did have the option to link a twitter account to our student directory entry, but it wasn't required.
i suspect that while they might be required to have a twitter or whatever, actually posting with any frequency isn't enforced. grad programs have a hard time enforcing actual requirements. this is something that probably came out of a desire to encourage early careers to start networking, but this sort of initiative is rarely thought about more than "they should be On The Internet."
this is not a normal expectation! and even if your school asks for it, I really, really doubt you have to do very much. you can almost certainly get away with posting a link to a paper you like once a semester and call it a day. many scientists don't even have a real profile picture on their professional accounts. it's just like. a picture of a vaguely sciencey thing or something related to their work.
I do think it's useful to have a twitter presence (the other ones don't matter unless you have a strong desire to do scicomm) just because a lot of job postings get passed around on there. like. on the academic side of the internet (less true for industry) folks are more active on twitter than linkedin. sometimes it's the only place some positions are posted outside of the university website. but if you decide to start a twitter, you'll notice that uhhhh science people barely ever post outside of the sci comm types. your average tenured professor tweets once every two years either when they're desperate for students or recently published something exciting. every so often there is a single interesting thread discussing new findings. it's a very slow type of social media. you will not need to be chronically online to keep up.
so. to sum up. please don't worry!

How I landed an industry job straight out of my life sciences PhD, without doing a post-doc 
In less than 7 weeks I’ll be defending my dissertation as a final step in my PhD in Cancer Biology, and yesterday I accepted a Scientist position at a local biotechnology company. And best part: I didn’t have to do the dreaded post-doc first! Which is pretty rare for our field (but I hope it’ll be more and more common for PhD’s going into industry).
I promised I would talk about the process here, and I hope that anyone who’s aiming for the same path can walk away with some tips or at least with a familiarity of the process. 
The main points I want to get across: 
Network network network. You can probably just stop reading here, because this job came about all through networking. I was basically head-hunted--someone in my network (a program alumnus) contacted me on LinkedIn to ask if I wanted to apply for a position on the team she directs. So set up your LinkedIn account, keep it up to date, and use it to actively network. At the very least you should connect with the alumni in your program as you all have something in common already, and since they’re out and about in the field they would be great resources for informational interviews and job referrals. 
My expertise and career goals matched the position. No brainer, of course. Even if I wasn’t contacted by the company, I would only be applying to companies I qualified for (so companies dealing with cancer since I’m my PhD is in Cancer Bio). My lab mate, for example, was finishing up his PhD in Nutritional Sciences but was applying to cancer companies with no result, because it just wasn’t the candidate those companies were looking for. My expertise was also probably what got that director’s attention in the first place and the reason she reached out. She was basically willing to wait 7 months for me (from job posting to my final start-date) because I was her ideal candidate, and not just based off my expertise alone, but our personalities matched too. She told me “we communicate well” aka our work personalities match. I know you can’t change who you are obviously, but getting along with your manager goes a long way. 
That being said, employers/PIs are flexible with start dates for PhD candidates. I applied to this position 6 months before I had my defense date set and when I only knew a ballpark of “sometime in the summer”. And then during my interview process I had to keep pushing that potential start-date back and back and back. But the company understood this. So as a PhD candidate you could start applying 6 months before your expected end-date (even if it’s still a moving target), or even months earlier for post-docs (which are much more flexible than industry positions). In general, you should start looking 1 year before your finish date to see what’s out there. 
It was also good luck/timing. If I had graduated earlier than the job posting, then I never would’ve had this opportunity. I also only added her to my LinkedIn network because I went to a lunch seminar where she gave a talk about working in industry. So small things that ultimately made a huge difference. Some you can’t control, but some (like going to that lunch) are definitely  opportunities to seize. 
I was low “flight risk”. Companies are always afraid their employees will leave the company/city for greener pastures, and that’s more common in “less popular” places to live, like the southwest desert where I’m located. But I’m from here, my grad school is here, my family’s here--so the company is making the assumption I’m not going to just up and go any time soon. You obviously can’t control where your family chooses to settle down, but you may be able to strategically choose your grad school based off of its proximity to potential companies. 
And lastly, in my experience, PhD’s with no post-doc in biotech industry should expect an annual salary somewhere between $75-95k (depending on the company and cost of living), with benefits.
Ok, my full story under cut if you’d like to know more about the process I went through:
It all started when a program alumnus (or alumna, if you’re picky about your latin) named RF talked at a lunch seminar to students in my program in Feb 2019. I was really interested in her company and knew she would be a great network to have, so I emailed her later to thank her, and then added her on LinkedIn. 
Fast forward to January of this year (2020) when RF messaged me on LinkedIn out of the blue asking me how close I was to graduating and if I would be interested in a position at her company. I think she wanted someone asap (so not me, I thought), but we talked more about my project, and she said she’d keep in touch. In February, she messaged me again saying a position opened up on her team and she wanted to see if I would like to apply. I said heck yes (or the more formal version), and sent in my application, with the expectation that I would be defending sometime in the summer. I also put her as my job referral and messaged her afterwards to let her know my application went through (with the hopes that maybe she could fast-track it through HR, which I think she did). 
In the meantime, I messaged (also on LinkedIn) another program alumnus I knew (our time overlapped a few years) who currently works with RF and we chatted on the phone about what he does at work, how he likes it there, etc. Basically an informational interview (and also to catch up as colleagues). I was also hoping he’d put in a good word for me with RF and can attest I’m a decent human being and all that. 
2 weeks later, I had a phone interview with RF, and I was super nervous going into it. I even practiced pages and pages of answers of common interview questions for a week straight. But to my surprise she opened the call with “I already know a lot about you from your CV, LinkedIn profile, and also your PhD training because we’re from the same program, so this is your chance to ask me questions!” And I was like, uhhhh awesome! The only thing she wanted to know about me was when I could start, and at that moment in time I was gunning for a July/Aug defense date. 
(I also emailed her and HR afterwards to ask them whether they could match my salary expectation, which I had researched well beforehand for what was common in the field for my position and experience, and they said they could.)
We then set up the next round of interviews for April with a colleague of RF’s who used to be in the same team but now directs her own, and RF’s boss (these would have normally been on-site, but I did them over the phone bc Covid). I again messaged my friend at the company asking if he had any tips. 
And then disaster struck! The company’s HR called me a week before those scheduled interviews to tell me the company had ordered a hiring freeze due to Covid and the effect it was having on the economy. Absolute bummer :( :( :(
So I then applied for a few more positions here and there, including some post-docs (which I really didn’t want to do). I got 2 rounds of interviews for a Scientist position at another local company, and as of today I still haven’t heard anything from them. oh well. 
Then in June I finally heard back from RF’s company saying the hiring freeze has been lifted and whether I’m still interested? Uh, heck yes! So we continued with those 2 phone interviews I had originally scheduled back in April. They both went really well. But I still continued to apply to other positions in the meantime because I wanted to have as many options as I could. 
Then 2 weeks ago (July 7) I got THE call: they wanted to offer me the position! :D
Only problem was, we needed to settle on a start-date. They of course wanted me to start like, yesterday, but my PI wanted to push back my original defense date of Aug 28 one more week to Sept 4, and also wanted me to focus on any dissertation edits for 2 weeks after that. So my earliest start-date would be Sept 21. If you remember, my defense date shifted from “sometime in the summer” to “July/August” to now September, so I was really worried the company wouldn’t accept this. I nervously waited 2 weeks for someone to call me back, and in my head I kept thinking, “I blew it I blew it”. I even sent in a job application to another company in that time. 
But RF finally called me and said hey, no problem, we can do that! She told me she was willing to wait because I really was her perfect candidate (I had all the experience she wanted, and she said we communicated well aka our work-personalities matched). She had also just recently hired another graduate from our program, who is also a friend of mine, so she knew we would all mesh together very nicely. 
And that’s the story folks! I’ll be starting the position remotely until it’s safe to return to the building again. They’re also working with my husband to see if he’s a good candidate for some of their other open positions (we’re both in the biotech field). We’re both super excited about this new chapter in our lives. 
All this because I attended the lunch seminar RF talked at all last year and then added her on LinkedIn. When people talk about opportunities lurking behind every corner, they really did mean that.

i have an appointment for therapy intake tomorrow and uhhhh, i walked by the building yesterday and the office is at the 7th floor and they have this tiny elevator and i was already nervous bc i dont do well with new places (which i tried to mitigate by checking the place out before the appointment) but i really dont do well with elevators and the smaller they are the more i hate them so i’m contemplating taking the stairs... which wont go well probably bc im a lazy fuck and i never work out or even move. now i’m thinking of going there an hour early but i dont wanna introduce the habit of going places extremely early out of anxiety again... also i hate waiting. but i also hate being late. im probably making things way harder for myself than they should be which is exactly why i need therapy lol
i think i might just have to power through the whole thing and take the elevator and leave half an hour before the appointment which still gives me like 15 minutes of extra time. i hate having to be a ‘normal’ person but i guess i should just do it like this so i won’t start a cycle of avoidant anxiety behaviour again. i also hate that the person i have this appointment with doesn’t have a profile picture on their linkedin. I need to know stuff!! so i won’t worry!! plz!!

I don’t know how LinkedIn works and at this point I’m too afraid to find out. I must have signed up at some point but I don’t know what I used to log in.
I do know that it emails me three or four times a day, and has done for years now, and I don’t know how to make it stop. What’s weird is that it gets stuck. It used to email me “so and so requested to connect with you!” and it’d be someone i’ve met in real life or whatever. Mostly thru roller derby. And I’d be like, no, I’m not connecting with shit, I don’t know how to use that site. And so it’d email me daily reminding me about it for about a week, and then it’d give up.
Lately, it’s decided to ask me, sometimes twice or three times a day, “do you know so-and-so?” and it goes back and forth between two different people, both roller derby people I haven’t seen in a solid three or four years now, maybe more-- but it’s just the two of them, and it emails me about them literally twice a day. One of them used to be Dude’s boss, for a while, circa 2009. It’s. A lot. I don’t know how to make it stop and like hell am I ever logging in to that site again. 
Anyway if you’ve ever wondered why I didn’t accept your request to connect on LinkedIn that’s why.
In other news, I replaced the needle in my sewing machine as per the advice of uhhhh @missbuster​? was it you? it was someone I’m connected with on multiple platforms and I’m not sure which platform the comment was on and thus I can’t find the conversation to reply to it, and maybe it was dreamwidth, and gosh on the one hand I love having multiple avenues of conversation but I sure wish conversations were actually supported on Tumblr, it’s a pretty fundamental aspect of social media that the site rather forcibly neglects. Argh.
Anyway, I replaced the needle, and yes, it helped quite a bit-- the old needle was actually some kind of specialty needle and I don’t know how or why that happened but there it is. I had to buy a new pack of needles to find my old pack, but once I did, I found the old pack and all was well. The machine still isn’t fixed, though. And it turns out, I’m actually fucking terrible at hemming, so several of the furoshiki, I’ve had to either seam-rip the hem and restitch it, or just go over by hand and mend the places where I totally neglected to catch the turned-under bit of seam. It’s been sort of humbling to realize that not all of my shittiness is blameable on the tools. Though, I mean, a lot of it was, so. 
I’ll do a separate post with the Whole Saga Of The Furoshiki soon, though. But here’s a teaser picture:

ive seen job adds on linkedin, snagajob, and more about positions for work from home. they operate from the website https://www.gillyconstructions.com/ with the ip address 209.85.214.65
the ip address has numerous reportings of fraud and scams. the website is a fake- none of clients are real, the maps and phone numbers are fake, and the Project sections are not real nor is there nearly enough information.
pretty sure its money laundering of some sort. careful folks. this guys scammed a lot of people and after interaction, they behave like an angry scared child when caught. to quote my friend: scared kids are dangerous.

for a more complete breakdown of recent events:
unfortunately for the first item i can’t say much more than there was about a solid week of [REDACTED]. if you don’t know what goes behind the black highlighter here let’s just say i was really, really unavailable.
then my job hunt ratcheted up, because i started seeing a career counselor and got a book on how to make a linkedin page. there’s been a lot of time spent on that. went to a career fair. got a bunch of people’s business cards.
met a boy. wooed the boy. possibly failed? spent a lot of energy talking to him and stressing about if it would work out because he’s so obscenely my type. he’s been off radar for over a week now but i don’t have confirmation that it isn’t some problem on his end unrelated to me (and considering how well things were going, that seems more likely this time than other times)
uhhhh and then a big one: my parents are doing a big remodel of their kitchen, which is right over my room. and there’s no understating how loud that shit is, like, i genuinely think my hearing would get permanently damaged if i stayed down there the whole time and i would pay you to prove i’m exaggerating. so i gotta stay in another room for a while.
also had to clean my shithole room since they wanted to do some work in there (related to the electric circuitry, I think). that was a big tiring project but it needed doing so i’m glad i got it done.
(also also, my parents decided it wasn’t enough to have the room cleaned...  my room has a tendency to flood in one corner, so usually the carpet is rolled away in that spot and there’s a huge stack of newspapers to absorb water. but my parents decided they couldn’t face the shame of a newspaper stack in my room, so they took it away and unrolled the carpet. and then it flooded. and now my room FUcking Stinks.)
uhhhh and then People. you know how it is.
if i get a job it’ll only stay intense, but i’m hoping it’ll calm down before too long. i have a bunch of longfics to read, to say nothing of the ones i gotta write.

The importance of marketing and personal branding is very high, especially when you are applying for many of the same internship positions as your peers are. Personal branding is made up and includes three different phases. ‘The first phase is to establish a brand identity; The second phase is to develop the brands positioning; The third phase is to evaluate a brand’s image’, (Khedher, 2014. p.34). This is why you have to try and stand out by marketing yourself and talking yourself up. This can be assisted by your references, as well your LinkedIn profile which will say all to the person reading it. Although it can sound a bit cocky and selfish, it is what needs to be done in mentioning to your internship partners your achievements and experience which you have within the position. Personally it is one of the areas that I need to improve on when in an interview. To me it is very different in paper and in person mentioning to someone what your achievements and experience is. I feel paper is easier to mention as you are not there in person, and it does not sound as bad. Whereas in person I feel almost like I am cocky if I am talking about myself. Even though it is what internship partners like to hear, I feel as if they do not want to heat because of my tone it sounds wrong. However, this is what has to be done to set yourself upon the other person going for the same internship position. Although with that being said I believe that my personality is one of my strengths when meeting people. I have great eye contact, have great confidence, always smile and project my voice to the standard in the room. ‘Showing confidence in interviews will help you make a better first impression and be more memorable so you can get more job offers’, (Clark, 2021). If in an interview I believe I would only need to work on the amount of times I would say “uhhhh”. For this to stop, I need to just stop and think for a second which too will help me sound more professional to someone. A great thing about Transition to Professional Practice is how we get to practice talking to each other as though we are in an interview. We get our lecturer and our peers to analyse and let us know what was good, and what could be done better. Hearing it from our lecturer and peers helps rather than your internship partner. This way we have the opportunity to practice and improve, so we can nail it in the real interview. Personal marketing and branding is what you need to sound professional and a great candidate for the internship position.

Everything but the bright lights, music and slots.Seasons may change. Certain clothes, movies and music may go out of style, but onethings for sure, the fierce competitiveness of the job market remains the same.Looking for employment is not pleasant by any means. However, no matter whatwalk of life anyone comes from it's a task, we all must be under-take.Any occupation no matter what kind level in a career is nothing but a blind toss ofthe dice. I would be best akin it to going to Las Vegas, and hoping to hit the Jack Pot.The bright lights, live shows and ping of the slots may not be there, but the conceptis exactly the same. You're damn if you do and if you don't. In some cases, when youdo have to travel long distances to interviews that do not come with a guarantee forsuccess. The casino side effect can be more prevalent than ever.Job search or scavenger hunt?Once the job is acquired, so are the long 8 hour days. The day in day out chippingagainst the grind stone sets in. The motivation and excitement of a new careerquickly wears off, which can make the weekend come not fast enough. So, why notfind a job that's fun? Is it even possible to be excited about going to work? I'm happyto say it is, but as always there is a catch. If that dream job is so much fun, then youcan bet a lot of people will do almost anything to get it.Applicants can now search for jobs anywhere in the country, even the world.Advertisements in the fashion and entertainment writing careers are found onInternet job boards such as LinkedIn, Career Builder and the career's section of thepublication's official web page.
Link up to the "in crowd"LinkedIn, is an extremely useful tool because it not only lists positions that jobseekers may apply to. These will display themselves either byemail or upon logging into the social media platform.Career Builder...or spam folder?Career Builder is an Internet job forum likes to give the illusion of convenience andspeed to job seekers who are already dealing with the stress of finding a job.However, upon deeper observation things are not all as they may seem. At firstglance, everything seems to be, in fact, a little better than LinkedIn since the siteseems to be completely devoted to finding jobs, without the clutter of addingconnections and posting frequent updates. In a matter of just a few minutes, aresume is attached and sent on its merry way. How they get into the job suggestions is a bigger mystery than the socksthat seem to disappear in the laundry, never to be heard from again. Pyramidschemes and cold calling positions which hide their true intentions behind thephrase, “We want to train you to be a manager, so that you can train others to openup their own office.” Uhhhh...no. How these people say it with a smile, and straightface should be included in a Ripley's Believe it or Not exhibit.Why not go straight to the source?
It's no secret that anyone who's searching for a career in the entertainment and fashion writing industry would consider finding a position to be akin to having their dream job. Clearly, the competition is fierce because of its demand. In order to help weed the truly passionate candidates from who are just looking for a stepping stone job fix. Publications that are solely committed to the endorsement of fashion, and entertainment have chosen to only post openings on their official web pages or social media plat forms. Publications which have taken this approach are In Style and Vogue.   Taking this approach may put the burden of extra research and hunting on the candidate's shoulders. But, isn't that what someone who truly wants to start their career does in the first place? To really want something, they have to be willing to find it.

“You get what you pay for” is a phrase most of us are familiar with. Nevertheless,there is another one we should take to heart as well, which is, “You get what you've worked for.” Fast, is just that something that is done in a hurry. Fast food is unhealthy likely to cause a heart attack. Forms of transportation that go too fast cause nausea and motion sickness. Job applications sent out in a hurry ends up being nothing, but fruitless.   To find a dream job as with everything else, which is desired requires hard work and diligence not shortcuts. So, take the leap, toss the dice. You could very well hit the jackpot.
