!!yes i have tips
for me, i think the easiest way to start is to first pick a fandom that you’re super comfortable with, so like. one that you’re pretty knowledgeable in the general basis of canon or characters. (you can also pick one you’re not as familiar with, but in my experience it means i spend a lot more time researching than writing, bc i don’t want to get any information wrong)
another thing is to pick a fandom that you just really are interested in, in that period of time. like if you had a massive phase in fandom a a couple years back and are super familiar with everything about it, but now you’re really into fandom b, and not as familiar but are actively learning, i would pick fandom b to write for. it just sort of prevents boredom and keeps the writing groove going, because ur writing what ur into at the moment.
the biggest and most important advice about starting to write, is truly just *start.* open an empty doc, and just let your mind wander. sometimes i have to warm up before i can write anything substantial, so here’s some tips for “warming up”:
• open a scene from the media, this helps especially for movie/show based fandoms, and then rewrite it in your own style
write what you observe. what does this character say, sure, but also how do they say it? is there a particular tone to their voice? is their eyebrows furrowed? their lips pursed? what are they thinking when they say that, what isn’t being said? what do they really mean?
settings and expositions are important, but I think personally they can be hard to write when you’re looking at an empty document and just feel lost on how to start. that’s where characters can shine, they give the meat to an otherwise deficient story.
• explore and practice with figurative language when describing things, feelings especially.
feelings are really hard to nail down! you can say someone is feeling sad, or angry, or guilty, but it makes it blocky and stilted to read if done too much, and if it’s stilted to read, then it’s stilted to write. this one is also kinda tricky to nail down, but it just requires practice, like everything else.
• go looking for interesting prompts, photos, and words that catch your eye
this is for the step after “warming up”. if you don’t know what to write, then this is a good step to take. go on pinterest or google (or tumblr!) and just look for words or images that spark your interest. sometimes you can get inspiration from the strangest of things, but take advantage of it, write down any little idea that comes across your mind. it may seem hard, but this is another practice thing— the more your brain works on thinking creatively, the easier it will get. (supposedly.)
i’m sure i have more tips but i just woke up so that’s all i have up in the noggin atm.
OVERALL RHE MOSF IMPORTANT THING IS TO HAVE FUN AND JUSR START THOUGH!!!
you’re gonna do great i believe in you!! i firmly support the idea that every single person has so much potential in any endeavor they are passionate about and want to pursue<3
here’s some links to my pinterest boards if you’re having trouble looking for inspo to write, idk how helpful they’ll be, but! it works for me:
