HAPPY FEVERUARY yayyy I’m so excited!!! Starting off with one of my favs, I know she’s lesser known but I hope at least one other person will enjoy! Feveruary Day 1– “How did you end up like this?”— Lindsay Weir x fem!reader
When you get to school in the morning, you immediately head to the secret spot under the stairwell where you meet your girlfriend every morning. To the rest of the world, Lindsay and you are best friends, but behind closed doors, the two of you care more about each other than they’ll ever know.
You sometimes wish they could. Sometimes all you want to do is scream to the world that Lindsay Weir is your girlfriend, but for now, you can’t, and for now, they can never know. That’s just how it was. Girls date boys and boys date girls. That’s it, end of discussion for your town and for a lot of the world, probably. You don’t really know, actually, but here, that’s how it is.
But right now, none of that matters as you make your way to your shared spot. Only, when you get there, it’s unusually empty. Leaning against the wall, you fidget anxiously, waiting for Lindsay to show up and glancing down at your watch until there’s only ten minutes left until class starts. Your furrow your brows. Lindsay hates being late and she’d never miss a class unless she had to.
You quickly make your way outside to where your other friends like to hang out. Ken looks half asleep, and you spot Daniel and Kim making out against the wall, so Nick it is.
“Sup’, Nick.” You said casually as you normally do and he greets you with his bright, goofy smile. “Hey, y/n.” He scoots over on the bleachers so you can sit down next to him. You make random small talk for a minute before looking around then back at your watch.
“Hey class starts in a couple minutes. Any of you know where Lindsay is? She’d hate to be late.” You ‘casually’ point out to your less observant friends. Nick shakes his head. “Haven’t seen her.” He says, grabbing his back and standing up. You nod slowly, worry bubbling in your chest.
“Hey uh, Nick. I think imma cut classes today. Cover for me?” You stand up too. “yeah sure.” He shrugs and in true Nick fashion, bids you a good day and tells you to stay out of trouble before he wanders off to class.
You made your way to your car and in less than ten minutes, you’re parked outside 13 Nome Drive and knocking on the Weirs’ door. You get no response so after a minute or so of knocking, waiting, knocking and waiting, you find the spare key. You’ve been like family to them for years so of course you know where it is. You let yourself in and pause for a second after shutting the door behind you and placing the spare key on the small table in the entry way. The house is too quiet.
“Lindsay?” You call out and start to make your way around, checking the kitchen and living room for her. “Linds, babe, you here?” You call out again and don’t get the answer you would expect. Instead of your girlfriend’s gentle, familiar voice calling back, you hear the sound of rough, painful coughing coming from her bedroom.
You’re there in seconds, rushing to her bedroom door and carefully opening it to find a dim room—the curtains still drawn, and lights off. There’s a lump of blankets on the bed in the shape of your girlfriend. You close the door softly, making the room even dimmer, then you walk to the bed and crouch down to be closer to Lindsay.
“Hey.” You speak gently, low as to not to startle her. She lets out a small groan and slowly opens her warm chocolate brown eyes. “Y/n?” She rasps, barely above a whisper and you both wince slightly at the sound of her voice.
You nod, reaching out a hand to brush some dark strands of hair from her face. “Yeah, babe. I’m here. You don’t sound too good.” You hum and Lindsay leans into your gentle touch, your cool fingers a welcome relief from her fever flushed skin.
She just sighs in response and closes her eyes, basking in your closeness. The room is engulfed in a comfortable silence while you gently run your thumb along her cheek. The silence lingers until she suddenly pulls away from your touch to muffle a few harsh coughs into her pillow.
You gently rub her shoulder until she looks back up at you, her face scrunched in discomfort. “I feel like absolute crap.” She rasps out, wincing at the pain in throat.
You sigh, disheartened to see her so miserable. “Aw babes. How’d you end up like this?” She shrugs slightly, knowing your question is rhetorical anyways. She seemed completely fine yesterday so whatever she’s caught must’ve came on fast.
Instead of answering, she clears her throat as she attempts to sit up. You’re sitting on the bed now, using a gentle hand to guide her against the pillows. “What’re doing here?” The brunette asks and you look glance down at your hands which are playing with her own before gazing back into her tired eyes.
“You didn’t show up, I was worried.” You state simply and she offers a shy smile, chewing on her lip a moment. “Will-will you stay with me? My parents are gone all day and I…I just want you to be here.” She admits, unable to hold eye contact. She doesn’t want you to miss school, but she feels too sucky to care, the only thing she cares about right now is how you make her feel better just by being there.
“Of course, Linds. I think I can miss a day, especially when I have such a good reason to…” You lean forward to kiss her forehead sweetly. Her brows scrunch in slight confusion. “ ‘nd what reason is that?” You wait a beat before throwing yourself into her arms, gently tacking her against the fluffy pillows. The sound of her laugh makes your heart feel fuzzy and your chest warm as you gaze lovingly at her, the two of you now laying there, your arms wrapped comfortingly around her.
“My girlfriend is sick and in desperate need of cuddles, I can’t possibly go to school knowing that!” You exclaim but suddenly her laughing turns to coughing and she’s turning away into the pillow to avoid coughing on you. Your face immediately falls as you move to rub her back. A few seconds later and she turns back to face you, her cheeks even more flushed after the force of her coughs.
With a sympathetic sigh, you cup her cheek, and lean in slightly to kiss her forehead. It’s much to warm under your lips and your own forehead crinkles in worry as Lindsay’s hand starts to play with the hair that falls easily around your shoulder. She offers a tired smile. “Thank you, baby…hey…your hairs’ wet.” She notes and you chuckle slightly. “Yeah it’s raining today.” You say like it’s obvious but over her shoulder you can see her curtains are closed. “…guess I wouldn’t know, been ‘sleep all morning.” She mumbles and her eyes soften as she looks at you.
“Poor love.” You hum before moving to sit up and your girlfriend mirrors the action. You bring an arm around her shoulders as you lean against the pillows and she curls herself into you. “ugh I jus’ feel s-so gro…gruu-hhuh-nhuhhh’Schuuh!…ughh…gross.” Lindsay sneezes into your shirt, her body choosing to emphasize her point. “Bless you honey.” You run your fingers along her arm and she sniffs harshly, letting out an annoyed whine.
“I know, Linds…how ‘bout I make you some tea while you change into some fresh pajamas? Getting out of these sweaty clothes might help a bit.” You suggest and she looks up at you, raising an eyebrow slightly. “I’m not sweaty!” She huffs and you roll your eyes. “Hate to break it to that pretty little fevered brain of yours, but yeah, you kinda are.” You laugh as she wrinkles her nose.
“Ugh, gross. Remind me why you’re here?” You smile widely, “uhhh because you’re my girlfriend and I love you?” You answer in a somewhat joking tone, but you both know your words are sincere. She blushes slightly, opening her mouth to say something else but you interrupt her. “Even when you’re a little ball ‘o germs.” You laugh a little and it’s her turn to roll her eyes at you as she holds you a little tighter.
“You know if you stay you’re probably gonna catch this crap.” Is her response, her brows knitting together slightly. You just simply hum and kiss her hair. “Babe I really don’t care. Plus we spend like all our time together, I’ve probably already gotten it, or if I haven’t that probably means I won’t. Don’t worry about me.”
You feel her shift slightly so she can place a featherlight kiss to the side of your neck. “God you’re a sap.” She hums and you huff out a laugh. “And here I thought you liked that about me!” She scoffs at your terrible joke, rolling her eyes. “Stop, you know I do.”
“Okay okay, pjs and tea?” You prompt and Lindsay nods against you before stretching out and making her way off of you. By the time you’re up at by the door, she’s already digging around in her drawers. “I’ll be back in a minute, love.” You call to her and make your way to the kitchen.
A few minutes later and you’re humming quietly to yourself as you search for your girlfriend’s favorite mug, setting it down on the counter next to the teapot. You feel warm arms wrap around your waist from behind and you smile softly when Lindsay tucks her face against your shoulder.
“Whatcha doin’ Linds?” You ask just as the pot shrills and you carefully start pouring out the hot water into the mug. “Mhmm missed you.” She murmurs against you and you hold back a laugh. “I haven’t even been gone five minutes. Seems like you’re the sap here.” You turn in her hold, wrapping your own arms around her body and she leans her face to your chest.
“Mmm.” She simply hums and you can tell she’s pretty tired. “Back to bed, hmm?” You kiss her soft brown hair. “Couch.” She counters and you nod to yourself then the two of you make your way to the living room, the mug of tea in one of your hands as your other arm is draped around her shoulders. You smile internally at her new outfit, thick cozy sweatpants and a baggy blue sports shirt. It can sometimes drive you crazy when she dresses so casual, though you always think she looks hot anyways.
You settle her on the couch, handing her the tea before walking to the windows. You carefully pull each shade closed, the room getting considerably darker as you do. It’s not that you really care if someone sees the two of you from outside, but you know Lindsay likes privacy, plus the dimmed lighting should help ease the headache that she most likely has.
Taking a second to grab a throw blanket, you’re quickly joining your girlfriend on the couch and she cuddles right up to you as you wrap the cozy blanket over the both of you. “Comfortable?” You hum as she takes a few sips of the hot tea and you feel her body relax into your hold. She nods, eyes starting to feel heavier as she envelopes herself in your warmth. She doesn’t protest when you take the mug from her before she can spill it on herself and you set it on the shelf by your head.
You hold her gently, keeping one arm tucked around her at all times, cradling her between the couch cushions and your side. You exchange small words here and there, mostly you blessing her when she sneezes, or you murmuring soft nothings in her ear as you run your fingers soothingly through her hair. It’s not long though until the only sounds are her soft sniffles, breathy coughs, and the sound of you flipping the pages of a book you’d found within reach and started reading to keep your mind busy.
And this is how you stay for the rest of the day, reading, soothing your girlfriend, and tending to her as she drifts in and out of little fevered naps. There’s nowhere else you’d rather be than right here, feeling the slow steady breaths of Lindsay’s sleepy breathing synch with your own. Eventually you’ll have to wake her up, maybe carry her back to bed and slip out before her parents come home, but for now, it’s just you and her. It’s your favorite way to be.
