On the surface, the gang is just a happy found family but
Lindon has struggled with self worth all his life, being told that if he was murdered his clan would have to apologise to his murderers, and generally being treated like he's less than dirt. He didn't even start to see himself as important or strong until book ~eight that's how deep his insecurities ran. That is 3 years away from the valley, as a guy in the top 16 of the Uncrowned Tournament. He still felt lesser. When he saw his family again it all got worse and set him back probably months on the measure of his self worth because they still saw him as a useless unsouled. It makes it worse that his underlord revelation was literally "I practice the sacred arts because I don't want to be useless anymore".
Yerin has abandonment issues. Her whole village got killed by a monster, a monster that then lived inside her. Then her master got killed and she was left alone again and in her povs you can see how deeply this affected her, especially in the early books. She was enraged that the Sandvipers attacked her and Lindon whilst he was advancing to Copper because it was cowardly, sure, but she also thought "they wanted to leave her alone again. That was unacceptable." Her Underlord revelation was about never being alone again. She always panicked when Lindon leaving was mentioned; when Cassias told him that they would send him home she froze up, worried that Lindon would leave her alone. She didn't want him to leave her behind, the mere thought of him leaving her frightened her.
Eithan has a deep set loneliness and is the antithesis of what he wants to be. He has been ahead all his life. A prodigy, a genius. But that means that he left all his friends behind. He had no equals, still doesn't, even among the most powerful beings in the universe. He was alone his whole life. When he manifested the broom icon for fun, a bunch of people killed themselves. He wanted to be a healer but he became the literal God of Death. He found a way to reverse death to manifest the Life Icon, and instead manifested the Death Icon. He was compatible with every Abidan type, except a healer. The one he wanted. He created a weapon called Penance. Penace. As penace for everything he's done. Then he had to spend millenia reaping worlds - billions, trillions of people. Regularly. A change in the system could lessen this, he wouldn't have to reap so many lives (lives that he feels the sorrow of) if they just changed the system. But they won't because this one works "so well". At the expense of the one Judge that can never stop, never leave, because he doesn't have anyone that could take his place.
Mercy has mommy issues and was the victim of gaslighting. Throughout the series Malice treats her like a prized possession to be discarded once her worth is lessened in her eyes. Malice shamed Mercy over the fact that her friends are better, she made her feel lesser and weak. She was horribly manipulative towards Mercy and tried to hold her hostage. She lied to Mercy to keep her on her side, and only ever showed Mercy love when Mercy needed to be manipulated. Mercy feared her. Malice also publicly humiliated Mercy, in front of friends and family. Meanwhile all Mercy has ever wanted was to make her mother proud. She even physically abused Mercy, when Mercy was trying to urge her to ascend, and verbally abused her because she didn't want to see the truth.
Ziel got tortured and lost the will to live. He wasn't suicidal, but he didn't care whether he lived or died. He was forced to watch as his whole sect died, then got mutilated and crippled by a mad scientist that took pleasure in torturing him and fixing him up wrong. Then this same scientist threatened to hurt him again and he was prepared to let it happen, prepared to endure it again, because in exchange Yushi and Calling Storms would send the others to help Lindon. He was so apathetic and depressed because of what he went through, and suffered for years, his spirit causing him pain, hardly considering himself a sacred artist. And the worst part is, that he is just a genuinely nice guy. He helps Lindon in Ghostwater. He stays with Lindon after his contract to Eithan expires. He tries to cheer the group up by jumping out from behind a couch, pretending to be Eithan, because they miss him. He doesn't deserve to have suffered so much, but even then, he still finds a way to be kind. Despite his suffering, and having lived with it for so long.
#thats not even mentioning other trauma#like lindon's claustrophobia#they have been through TOO MUCH#TOO MUCH !!#cradle series#wei shi lindon arelius#eithan arelius#yerin arelius#akura mercy#ziel dawnwing of the wastelands#ziel of the wastelands#cradle will wight

A family can be a guy who uses a dead god's arm as a prosthetic, a girl with six (6) swords growing out of her back, the multiversal embodiment of death and destruction, a girl who's really nice despite having the worst mommy issues, a depressed dude with a giant hammer, a small blue woman, a dragon turtle whose size ranges from tiny to mountain, and a purple cyclops ghost thing who can see the future and I think that's beautiful.

Black and White and Gold
(Part 4)
By: MehmetMinded
Spoilers for Cradle and Beware of Chicken!
[Sector 19 The Way]
[Two standard months ago]
Lindon and Yerin sped through The Way. Worlds blurred by as they raced to the combat zone.
“Bleed and bury me, is it too much to ask to get a second and a half alone?” Yerin fumed. She was very upset about being interrupted. Lindon wasn’t thrilled about it himself, but he had found it hard to enjoy the dinner when there was still so much that needed to be done.
“The Way is in chaos, we were lucky we managed to get as much time as we did.” Lindon said with not a small amount of bitterness.
“More like the judges want to work us like rented donkeys until they find half a reason to toss us into Haven.”
Yerin wasn’t taking the cold shoulder the Reapers were getting from the rest of the Abidan well. Lindon thought it probably reminded her unpleasantly of her time in the Skysworn.
“We’ll just have to prove them wrong.”
[I hate to interrupt this fascinating philosophical dialogue, but we’re here.]
They had been briefed by Dross as they left The Grave. The situation had developed rapidly and, despite their speed, the Silverlords had been in the iteration for more than twenty minutes already. Their leader was a man with the wonderfully creative name of Fiend-Binder. As his name implies he has bound several lesser fiends of chaos to his will, the greatest of which is allegedly a class-2 fiend that the Abidan had failed to completely destroy. The small Abidan presence in the sector was delaying the intruders, but they were on the edge of breaking.
Lindon stepped from the Way just in time to interpose himself and the Titan Shield between a white armored Abidan recruit and a lance of deep carmine energy the width of a mountain. That he and his shield were so much smaller than the wall of death was of no consequence. The beam split like a log split by an axe blade, passing harmlessly around the embattled Abidan soldiers. Lindon turned to the exhausted men and women as Yerin took the fight to the Silverlords.
“Are you all alright?” He asked. His tone was clipped and commanding, but not overly forceful. His time leading the Twin Stars Sect had cured him of the last of his qualms about taking command.
Somehow the man whose life he’d just saved looked more terrified now than when he’d faced down certain death. Lindon sighed. This is what he got more often than not when dealing with low ranking Abidan.
“Just stay here, we’ll take care of it.”
With that the Burning Cloak sprang up around him. He had continued refining the technique in the year or so since his ascension. Where before he would have been surrounded by a great nimbus of flame, now the Blackflame flowed off of him like water dripping upwards, the red streaks almost lost in a grey-black flame of annihilation. Lindon launched himself at the Silverlord who had broken away from the three on one fight to try and strike Lindon from behind. Lindon caught him by the throat. His dreadgod arm tingled at the touch of the foreign energy system this man used.
“One chance,” Lindon said, “Surrender.”
The man replied by driving a knife at Lindon’s gut. Lindon had to clamp down on his arm with his will to get it to release the man in time to dodge. Lindon’s answering punch reduced the Silverlord to less than a dream.
[I’m starting to get a little concerned about that arm of yours.]
Oh now you have concerns? Where was this in the labyrinth?
[I had concerns then too! But you and I both know why I didn’t voice them. We agreed to never talk about it!]
Lindon didn’t have time to respond before combat was upon them again.
With one Silverlord dealt with that left them fighting two on two. Ostensibly an even fight, but Silverlords were unpredictable opponents.
Thankfully, so were Reapers.
A halo bloomed behind Lindon’s head as Dross projected Silent King clones around the Silverlords. They were weak, but almost indistinguishable from the real thing. Lindon clones mobbed the other Silverlord as Yerin and the real Lindon dealt with Fiend-Binder. The Vroshir was guarded by a half dozen lesser fiends, each of which was strange and wrong in its own uniquely horrifying way. Lindon spent Blackflame madra freely as he erased the monstrosities from existence. He had overcome several class-2 fiends on his own at this point. A handful of lesser fiends was hardly a challenge. Lindon felt a slight twinge as several of his clones were destroyed at once.
[He’s breaking out!] Dross called, [Now Yerin!]
Yerin kicked Fiend-Binder hard in the chest, buying herself some space. As one, the Lindon clones drew their Weeping Dragon sword formations. While not nearly as powerful as the real blades, they were plenty sharp enough for this.
Yerin’s blade rang with the cry of a great phoenix. Each of the Dragon blades answered with a cry of their own, though lower in tone, like the roar of a dragon.
The clones, along with the Silverlord, were shredded beyond recognition. As the illusions faded all that was left was a red mist drifting in high orbit around the planet.
With his partners dead, Fiend-Binder threw his hands wide, clearly preparing for some sort of final attack. Given the reports Lindon knew what was about to happen.
A black shadow seemed to pull itself away from Fiend-Binder, twisting and writhing in apparent agony as it grew larger and larger. Its form was something akin to a plucked bird, but with all of the wrong proportions. Its head was far too large and its tripplet “wings” were scattered asymmetrically around its torso. Jutting out seemingly at random from its body were numerous chitinous spikes that trailed black smoke. Where there should have been a beak, Lindon saw a lamprey’s maw; row after row of needle teeth gnashing as the eyeless head swiveled towards them. By the time it finished growing it was the size of a dreadgod, and it roared in fury at its continued existence, despite the vacuum.
Lindon was about to give Yerin the plan when Dross screamed into Lindon’s mind.
[COMBAT REPORT COMBAT REPORT]
Lindon turns as the world slows to near stillness, just in time to see Yerin, being run through by a spike of chitin the size of a spear. Even in this slowed time Lindon can see the wound festering, spreading out from the injury. He can feel Yerin’s origin guttering. He wants to scream but finds he can’t move as Dross desperately looks for any way to stop the inevitable.
Yerin is about to die.
The thought echos in Lindon’s mind, silencing everything, even Dross’ desperate begging for any solution fades away.
[Lindon? Hey, Lindon, stay with me! Lind-]
I’m not strong enough.
Lindon feels as though a pit has opened beneath him. He falls backwards into darkness. The world around him, fading from his perception.
I’m too weak.
The thoughts echo. They bounce around him. They seem to stab into him like knives.
Too weak
Not enough
Helpless.
Unsouled.
A small boy stands in front of a bowl of clear liquid. It does not react as he places his hand into it.
I practice the sacred arts so I won’t be worthless anymore.
A wooden badge.
I’m…
Worthless…
I could…
consume it…
The voice echos from deep in the blackness. The boy looks up over the bowl. On the side opposite him is not a man. He knows for certain it isn’t human, despite its shape. Its eyes are glowing rings of white on black.
I can… help…
The Empty Ghost stares emotionlessly at the boy. He knows without knowing that it wants to be let free. In the same way, he knows it could save Yerin if it was.
The boy stares into the bowl.
He closes his eyes.
He nods once.
Save Yerin
The Empty Ghost’s face splits into a joyless smile.
_________________________________________
Due to the nature of the combatants the battle was impossible to view in Fate. The official report from the Spiders would conclude that Fiend-Binder’s ultimate weapon broke from his control and consumed the iteration. The Reapers were the only survivors. This hadn’t garnered them any praise, but, after a thorough corruption screening and psychological evaluation, the incident was seen as one among many failures the Abidan had met with recently.
Lindon knew the truth. He had seen the sky breaking. The fiend was already dead.
He had smiled as the world broke.
________________________________________
Lindon backstory time! It’s a little shorter than the last couple and I’m not totally happy with how this one came out, but I’m not about to let perfect get in the way of done! We will now return to your regularly scheduled slice of life.

Sharing this every day that the Kickstarter is live. If you don't have the funds to donate I highly recommend checking out the original Cradle Series to see why this series deserves an animated adaptation.
Will and his team has worked so hard on this universe and I cannot wait to see where else he can take it.
