Linda Sue Price, artist
Linda Sue Price.
Artist Linda Sue Price is exhibiting in the Fine Arts Building in downtown Los Angeles in July. She shares with LFF about her various inspirations and process, how LA is for women in art, feminism and more...
Where are you from?
I’m from Los Angeles, CA.
How did you get into art?
I had a group of friends who were artists and I decided to try it myself so I went to art school for a couple of years.
Gratitude is a Virtue
Tell me about your inspirations, process.
I am affected by the stories I’m told and those I read about the human condition. There are universal issues that we all have to deal with whether we are aware of it or not. The way we resolve our challenges whether through denial or by letting go—both require a learned skill set.
I wasn’t given much guidance in how to respond to the challenges of life so it’s been a long search trying to find balance, learning to let go and be in the moment. In my art, I’m trying to share what is working for me.
I would like my art to cause viewers to experience neon in a new way—not as a sign—rather as fluidly moving glass and from that to see the possibility of experiencing their life differently—to not get stuck in the box.
Sometimes I start with an idea of what I want to communicate and other times it comes to me during the process. My current series, Words, is an outgrowth of a previous series where I incorporated common phrases.
Other times I start with the neon. I’ll bend shapes until I find one I want to pursue.
Jesse
Tell me about your current/upcoming show/exhibit/project and why it’s important to you.
I am in a two-person exhibit at the Fine Arts Building in downtown Los Angeles in July. I am making pieces specifically for that space. It’s an historic art deco building. In the lobby are cabinets for the display of art. It’s a unique place to show art.
Do you think your city is a good place for women in art? Do you show your work elsewhere/is there a difference in how your work is received?
I think Los Angeles is a good place for artists and there are a lot of women artists here. I work with a somewhat unique medium—neon—and it is generally well received although a lot of people only see it being in a game room not the living room. I’ve shown and sold in Colorado and Kentucky.
Artist Wanda Ewing, who curated and titled the original LFF exhibit, examined the perspective of femininity and race in her work, and spoke positively of feminism, saying “yes, it is still relevant” to have exhibits and forums for women in art; does feminism play a role in your work?
I am a feminist but it doesn’t appear in my work. More it comes out in my attitude and my decision to try working with an industrial media. There are other women working with neon but it is not common.
Joy Ride
If you could make one wish for art today, what would it be?
More collectors.
What do you think is the most important issue facing artists—and/or artists who are women—today?
Imagination is one of the best things about being human and there are all sorts of ways society and culture try to take that from us.
Ewing’s advice to aspiring artists was “you’ve got to develop the skill of when to listen and when not to;” and “Leave. Gain perspective.” What is the most helpful advice you have received?
You’ve got to show your work and show it and keep on showing it so that people become familiar with your art.

Les Femmes Folles is a volunteer organization founded in 2011 with the mission to support and promote women in all forms, styles and levels of art from around the world with the online journal, print annuals, exhibitions and events; originally inspired by artist Wanda Ewing and her curated exhibit by the name Les Femmes Folles (Wild Women). LFF was created and is curated by Sally Deskins. LFF Books is a micro-feminist press that publishes 1-2 books per year by the creators of Les Femmes Folles including Intimates & Fools (Laura Madeline Wiseman, 2014) and The Hunger of the Cheeky Sisters: Ten Tales (Laura Madeline Wiseman/Lauren Rinaldi, 2015). Other titles include Les Femmes Folles: The Women 2011, 2012, 2013, and 2014 available on blurb.com, including art, poetry and interview excerpts from women artists. A portion of the proceeds from LFF books and products benefit the University of Nebraska-Omaha’s Wanda Ewing Scholarship Fund. See the latest call for work on the Submissions page!
