Leland, left the Cadillac division of General Motors during World War I and formed the Lincoln Motor Company to build Liberty aircraft engines. After the war, the company's factories were retooled to manufacture luxury automobiles. - Lincoln encountered severe financial troubles during the transition and was consequently bought by Ford Motor Company in 1922, who still owns and manufactures cars under the Lincoln marque in its Lincoln-Mercury division. - The purchase of Lincoln was a personal triumph for Ford who had been forced out of his second (after Detroit Automobile Company) company by a group of investors led by Leland. Ford's company, renamed Cadillac in 1902 and purchased by rival General Motors in 1909, was Lincoln's chief competitor. - Lincoln quickly became one of America's top selling luxury brands alongside Cadillac and Packard. - In 1927, Lincoln adopted the greyhound as their emblem, which was later replaced with diamond that is currently in use. - Founders Henry M. Leland (after leaving Cadillac) and Wilfred Leland named their cars after Abraham Lincoln, the first President of the U.S.A. (1861-1865), who was assassinated during his term of office. - Lincoln presented the fifht generation Series Continental (1970-1979) as "Longer, lower, narrower" and almost every imaginable luxury could be delivered. - The 1973 Series Continental was available as this 4-door Sedan and as 65A Coupé (13,348 units built). - This fifth generation, designed by Buzz Grisinger, was assembled at the Wixom Assembly Plant in Wixom, Michigan - USA. - Because of strict US environmental measures, the engines lost almost every year "a few (less) horsepower", but that did not seem to bother the buyers. The ’76 model had a Motorcraft 4350 4-barrel downdraft carburettor with 202 bhp / 4.000 rpm, 478 Nm / 1.600 rpm, top speed 182 km/h. - From model year 1977 the smaller 6590cc Ford Cleveland 335-series V-8 400 engine was used with a Motorcraft 2150 2-barrel downdraft carburettor, having “only” 182 bhp / 4.000 rpm, 449 Nm / 1.600 rpm and a top speed of 176 km/h. http://ift.tt/2zaZXY1
