the classic grab for the amulet/chest. rewatched the clip from 2x11 because i know you can see the amulet sorta flash by like he had it gripped before he grabbed dean's face but wasn't sure if we see him grab him (we don't) but noticed that it's the mushy music theme at the end of that scene!! (also little insight into why the music reminded me of top gun!)

man, this actor that plays max is really good at this. i remembered him being he was really good at crying/playing sad but this conversation where sam and dean are trying to gently push for info on his dad and uncle, everyone does such a good job. max seems genuinely upset and scared but trying to put on a good front unsuccessfully, dean pushes but not too hard and then also is the one to be pretty soft about suggesting they should head out and let max get some rest.

MAX It wasn't about getting away. Just knowing they would still be out there. It was about...not being afraid. When my Dad used to look at me, there was hate in his eyes. Do you know what that feels like? SAM No.

feels like jared is *this close* to really hitting this conversation where he realizes max's mom got killed by azazel too, but felt kind of clunky. but it's also kind of an awkward vibe generally because sam's in puzzle solving mode and kind of fired up because he's figuring it out but max is still crying (and doing really well at keeping that despair and fear going so long). i think all the times in the rewatch i felt a little wobbly about jared's performance is portraying this type of emotion, think he just hasn't quite nailed down where to go with it

Su discurso de Gettysburg se convirtió en una icónica defensa de los principios del patriotismo, republicanismo, igualdad de derechos, libertad y democracia.

Durante su presidencia, Lincoln tiene un reconocimiento de haber liberado a los esclavos mediante la Proclamación de Emancipación.

Despite a strike-filled quarter in the Western world, I still found very little anime suitable to my tastes. I must accept that, like how Vtubees and Holothingies dominate the conversations these days, that the industry has moved on without me! (not that I really care…). But boy, is it hard to write a season preview when it’s the norm for shows to have a screwed-up production schedule to the point where they spillover into the following cour (here’s looking at you, Zombie show…)

Also, 50 engineers isn’t a small team. 😃

Unispace found that nearly half (42%) of companies with return-to-office mandates witnessed a higher level of employee attrition than they had anticipated. And almost a third (29%) of companies enforcing office returns are struggling with recruitment. In other words, employers knew the mandates would cause some attrition, but they weren’t ready for the serious problems that would result.

This doesn’t shock me. Once you settle into a routine at home it’s really difficult to muster the desire to go back to the office. Some folks need to be in an office with other folks but other, like me, don’t need it.

I like the control I have over my environment. My desk, my chair, heck I even bought my own monitor so I could make my setup just the way I want it. Couple that with no commute and the convenience of walking up stairs to our kitchen for lunch or coffee and it’s hard to beat. 🏡

The backdoor, known for years by vendors that sold the technology but not necessarily by customers, exists in an encryption algorithm baked into radios sold for commercial use in critical infrastructure. It’s used to transmit encrypted data and commands in pipelines, railways, the electric grid, mass transit, and freight trains. It would allow someone to snoop on communications to learn how a system works, then potentially send commands to the radios that could trigger blackouts, halt gas pipeline flows, or reroute trains.

Wow. This is a nightmare. We work really hard to make sure our code isn’t exploitable and here you have a company who intentionally made their software just that, exploitable. If you have a back door it’s an invite to every bad actor to walk right on in. 🫣

I love this car! Design in the 40’s and 50’s was beautiful. Lots of curves and fins and just plain style. Restoring a car like this would be a real honor.

Beyond the beauty of the design it sported a whopping 125 horse power from its 292 V12. 😆

Bluesky seems to be attracting a lot of the folks who make Twitter so attractive to many and with that it’s also attracting the terrible people.

I miss some actors and writers from Twitter and some seem to have taken to Bluesky. But if Bluesky is going to allow racism and hate to exist on the platform then I really don’t care to use it.

In the deep of winter, the nights are long and dark… and we all need good books to read, good shows to watch.   We cannot go to the movies or to the theatre so long as the pandemic lasts (not if we are sane), but we still have television, with more choices than ever before.

Looking for something good to watch?   Then let me recommend that you check out QUEEN’S GAMBIT, if you have not done so already.

It’s an adaptation of the Walter Tevis novel about a chess prodigy in the 60s and 70s.   A very faithful adaptation (yay) of a very strong novel (yay), beautifully written, acted, and directed.   I think you will all like it.   If there is any justice, the series should contend for awards.

It also resonated with me very strongly.   I know that world.  Chess was a huge part of my life in high school, in college, and especially in the years after college, the early 70s.    QUEEN’S GAMBIT brought it all back to me vividly.   Like the protagonist, I learned chess when I was still quite young, and got pretty good pretty fast (though never nearly as good as her).   I was the captain of my high school chess team, the founder and president of my college chess club.  I wrote and edited the club’s newsletter, GLEEP.  The first two great loves of my life were girls I met at the chess club (but that’s another tale for another time).

The heroine of the Tevis novel becomes a Grandmaster and contends for the world championship; I topped out at Expert, and that only very briefly before falling back down to a lower ranking.   There was even a time, back in college, when I played with the notion of devoting myself to chess after graduation.   I chose writing instead.   I think I made the right call.   If I had lived and breathed and studied chess all day every day for years, I could have become a better player, I have no doubt… but only to a point.   It was not in me to climb the heights attained by the protagonist of QUEEN’S GAMBIT.

But even after I had stopped playing, chess was a big part of my life.   Back in the first half of the 70s, when trying to establish myself as a writer, I directed chess tournaments all over the midwest and south for the Continental Chess Association.   Indianapolis, Detroit, Ann Arbor, Madison, Milwaukee, Lincoln, Atlanta, Dallas, Houston, Cleveland… I was living in Chicago then, but every Friday I was on a plane (or a Greyhound) with a suitcase full of score sheets to set up and run another tourney in another city, usually in the center of the city in some grand old hotel that had known better days where the rooms… and the ballrooms… were cheap.   Most young writers had to work day jobs five days a week so they could write on the weekends.   I was lucky; I worked on the weekends and had the week to write.   Running chess tournaments did not make anyone rich, even in the Fischer heydey, but I made enough to pay my share of the rent on the rundown Uptown apartment I shared with half a dozen college friends and roommates.    And there was one point where I crossed the streams, where my two lives met: my first sale to ANALOG was not a story, but rather an article about computer chess called “The Computer Was A Fish.”   (Half a century out of date now, of course).   The first thing Ben Bova ever bought from me.  I never sold another article to ANALOG… but it opened the door for all the stories I would place there in the years that followed.

It has been many many decades since I last ran a chess tournament or even played a game of chess, and the memories had faded… but QUEEN’S GAMBIT brought them all back.   It’s a fine series in all respects, I think, but I was especially impressed that the producers and directors got the chess right.   All too many of the chess games one sees in films and television are crap.  Supposedly great players are shown making elementary mistakes, the pieces on the board are in impossible positions, the game is obviously over yet no one has resigned, and so forth, and so on.   Not here.   The games one glimpses in QUEEN’S GAMBIT are real.   It must have been a challenge for the actors.   Not only did they have to learn their lines, they had to learn their moves, and make them in the right order.

All in all, a terrific piece of television, says this old patzer.

A few curious facts: 

In Spanish the Queen is also called Lady (Dama) so the series’ name was translated as “Gambito de Dama.”

We have to say thank you to Anya Taylor-Joy who asked the creators of the show for Beth to be a redhead (in the book Beth had brown hair): “When I first read it (the script), I was like ‘She needs to have red hair because I want her to be completely identifiable event if she doesn’t want to be.”  

Finally, the only other Auburn haired girl George wrote in his short stories, besides Laurie from A Song for Lya, was the one in his Chess story, Kathy from Unsound Variations, who is described as a ‘sweet lady’: “She stood up, and shook loose her hair. It was long and auburn and it fell around her shoulders gorgeously, and Peter remembered the sweet lady he had married eight years ago, when he was a bright young writer working hard on his first novel. He smiled. ‘You look nice,’ he said.”

Now we all get why George likes The Queen’s Gambit so much.

June 24, 2020: 8:41 pm: A generalized look at what is happening, and what took place to get us into this predicament.

I want to try to put things into a basic nutshell with information that just only touches the turning points with regard to where the terror coup Global Domination take-over began, how it grew, and how I see the history of what I have been calling #SAGcoup, from just after it's beginnings in World War Two, to where we are today. I'll start with the Diary of Ann Frank.

The Diary of Ann Frank is an important document with regard to the US involvement in World War Two. 1970's US Public School education taught students that the Diary was used, considered, and then acted upon, by the president of USA, Theodore Roosevelt. US School students were taught the the Diary was the single most important contributing factor for US involvement in World War Two. After consideration, I feel the document is false. I see that it is more likely to have been a lure, to get USA involved in a war far from home. A Humanitarian effort, and effort to keep that kind of Nazi oppression from gaining momentum in the world.

I am not a historian, and don't know much about that war, I only start there, because it makes sense to start there with explaining where we are today. It might be beneficial to leave that out of an explanation of circumstance, for fear of having the explaining that I do, viewed as false. I am only trying to get some help, no help comes, the things I explain are things that happen, are as true as my eyes and ears will allow me to understand them, and the time it has taken to learn what I explain in order to get help, has included much eye-witness of mass murder, and thousands of attempts to kill me, because of the information presented here. With that, I maintain that the Diary of Ann Frank is an important place for more qualified historians to reconsider with regard to it's intended purpose. So the next place I want to skip forward to, is the attack at Pearl Harbor Hawaii. That is where things may be easier to see truth. Since I am not a historian or war expert, I don't have much to say about that attack. What I do have to say, is I also believe what we are told, is false. You will need photographic reference materials that were published from as close to the time of the attack at Pearl Harbor as is possible, to see the truth. The Japanese Zero's, were fitted with Mercedes Benz engines. They were not Japanese airplanes. They were other, European manufacture aircraft, and were modeled after the Japanese Zero.

I propose that the reason none of the US Navy boats made it out of the harbor, is because all indications were that the only vessels in range of radio communications, patrols, and radar, were “friendly” vessels. I propose that the “friendly” vessels is where the “Zero's” came from. I further propose that the US Navy was in contact with the “friendly” vessels, and there was no apparent threat from them. The attack came from European “friendly's”. The Zero's were powered by Mercedes Benz engines, and that much can be seen in old photographic evidence of the attack. There are a number of photographs of crashed “Zero's”, and their engines contained in US Public School books that were in circulation in the 1970's. I have seen them, and they are clearly Mercedes Benz engines. After the attack, the retaliation on Japan from USA was in the form of basically one bomb, that Hiroshima Hydrogen bomb. USA stopped short of annihilating Japan. Why was the USA response limited to one bomb? The attack, if from Japan, should have warranted a more comprehensive response in my opinion. Nothing less than complete elimination of all of the controlling government, and it's military forces is what should have occurred if USA truly believed that it indeed was an attack at Pearl Harbor from Japan. I say, the truth about the Zero's being fake was known by US Military command, just at the point of the detonation of that hydrogen bomb, and USA stopped short of destroying Japan completely because of knowing the truth, at least in part. Who made the fake Zero's, and who specifically was responsible for the Pearl Harbor attack, was still an unanswered question. So far, I told about a false document that was designed intentionally as a lure to get USA into a European war, on their turf. I have told you about fakery, by Europeans, to blame Japan, for an attack on a US Navy base on Hawaii. Now, I want to fast forward to 1962. John F. Kennedy is shot to death on live television during a parade, while riding in a convertible Lincoln Continental. The Lincoln Continental Convertible is more important then anyone has ever publicly considered. I will just remind you of the importance of symbolism, and move on with the generalization of circumstances of Global Domination efforts of European origin. There was a parade, a US President. There were television cameras everywhere, the news networks knew of the route ahead of time. There was a shooter. The US Presidents head was rolling around on the trunk of a Lincoln Continental Convertible on live television during a parade. There was a magic bullet, a warehouse, and a grassy knoll.

There was another shooter, that shot the shooter, that shot John.

Symbolism on television news:

“Coup de Gras”

From Google: Coup de grâce. A French phrase meaning blow of mercy, that is, a final killing blow that puts a fatally wounded person out of his misery; used to mean the action or event that finally destroys or ends something.

Now, with the murder of John F. Kennedy, on television and live on a parade, I offer this to sum up how it fits into the other parts of this generalization, where the Diary of Ann Frank is false, is a lure into a European war on their turf, and an attack on a US Navy base, when the Navy was never able to get into a defensive position, because there was no perceived enemy anywhere to be found, and the response to the attack, was far less then what it should have been if Japan indeed was the offensive party. Enter Britain, at some point after the attack at Pearl Harbor, and before the assassination of John F. Kennedy.

Make some assumptions here. Do a “Quantum Leap” to find truth. Historians may be able to find further, more compelling and evident history to support a notion that Britain is behind the fakery, has always been behind it, and Britain still feels that USA belongs to Britain, discounting anything that occurred post Boston Tea Party. “The Brit's feel that they are the rightful owners of USA”, is the kind of Quantum Leap that is necessary to get at truth.

So, with that, and at some point after Peal Harbor attack and before the JFK parade spectacle, make an assumption that the Brit's made an alliance with the US News Media Networks. The Brit's shared their plans of Global Domination with US News Media executives, and made an offer. “Prove that you are able to handle the task, and we will grant you equal controlling share in the resulting domination efforts” Something like that was offered to US Network News Media. US News Media Networks were not amused by this speech:

US News Media Networks arranged the Jacqueline Onassis would murder John F. Kennedy during a parade on live television, and they used Marilyn Monroe as the catalyst in order to convince Jacqueline that John was cheating on her, with Marilyn. “US News Media US President Live Television Murder on a Parade w/Lincoln Continental Convertible”, was a success. US News Media, proved their worth, to Britain. So, now Britain, had gained the strength of the backbone of every US household's main source of information, and entertainment, the television. Britain shared the secret weapon with the entire US News Media, and the whole Screen Actor Guild Union, and all of its sub unions was at the command of Britain, with the secret weapon, Nitrous Oxide. Britain, with full blown global take-over and domination in mind, and with a thousand years of knowledge about the power of music, enlisted the Vatican Choir, in the form of “Rock & Roll Music”. The Brits invented Rock & Roll, and used it as a means to enter the US entertainment arena. The British Invasion of 1964 was more than a musical one. It was the beginnings of a command language, and served as an excuse to travel across the Atlantic, for business in the entertainment industries, for the purpose of planting British and Vatican operatives throughout USA into positions in the entertainment industries.

New York, where the transatlantic flights need to land first, provided that Broadway was established as a base of operations. Midway, Nashville Tennessee became a command center. In Hollywood, the brass of the offensive British/Vatican war machine was installed. It was 1964.

Plans, language, and agreements were made.

Britain began to secretly train Canadians for a terror attack on USA, and by 1970, the Canadian terror army was ready.

With the help from US News media, the attacking army began to decent from the skies, in the San Fernando Valley California.

They came by parachute, one adult, and one child per parachute, thousands of them, armed with nitrous oxide, and swords. They hit the ground in metropolitan parts of the San Fernando Valley, waited at the traffic lights, and when the traffic stopped for the red light, the terror soldiers murdered the drivers, at the stop lights, and disappeared into the San Fernando Valley with the vehicles that belonged to the people they killed at the traffic lights. The terror soldiers simply took the victims cars, to the addresses listed on the victims drivers licenses, and went to those addresses with the cars that belong there.

They killed as they needed for cover at the address where the vehicle owner lived. Many thousands of tandem paratropping terror soldiers from Canada descended, armed,  trained to kill, to find a vehicle, find a home, and blend in to the population of San Fernando Valley California.

The air-raid sirens howled for two weeks. No help ever came. Then, there were no more air-raid sirens. The terror soldiers turned them off. It was 1971.

News media in Hollywood covered the advance of the terror soldiers with silence and confusion tactics to fool public safety personnel, and aided the terror soldiers to take over West Valley Police Precinct right away.

Police station take-over was the immediate goal of the terror army, and US News Media helped them achieve that goal in the greater Los Angeles area. The schools were immediate targets, all of the students were killed and replaced with the children of the trained, Canadian terror army. There were no police to stop them, and US Military was fooled by SAG. That provided the seeds of the take-over of USA, in the form of a trained army from Canada that looks exactly the same as the people who lived in the area. The Los Angeles area taken over by the terror army, helped to allow that the US Media in Hollywood, could command them. The army protected the media, and the media protected the army, while provididung their marching orders on the evening news, and eventually, as parts of the script and screenplay of our favorite sit-coms, movies, plays, news programs, and the commercials in between. The advertising agencies were consumed and made part of the command chain.

SAG gained a terror army to command, compliments of Britian, and the terror army was trained and eager to take their commands, from SAG, over the airwaves on television news, in the music of the 1970's, and in newspapers and magazines.

Today, in 2020, we have the culmination on the cusp of the beginnings of a new Kingdom that will be replacing Canada, USA, and Mexico, by this time next year.

The end of USA, is upon us now.

No one has answered the calls for help, no one is willing to defend the USA, and there are no US Military or National Guard left alive anywhere to stop the new Kingdom, and the extreme communism and slavery it will bring with it from becoming a reality etched forever in the blood of many millions of USA Citizens, stained on the hands of our favorite entertainers. SAG's equal share of control of the global domination, is that Screen Actor Guild members, and it's sub-union members, are to be the “Master Race” in the future of that new Kingdom. Public education will include that the students, are taught that they are a human sub-species, and taught that they are put on Earth, to serve the needs of the “Master Race”, SAG. That, is why the forced amputation victims that are called “Partners, Side-Kicks. Companions” and other terms to describe them, are being experimentally crafted, so the the surgical advance will create a situation where humans are born in captivity, surgically altered with amputation and plastic surgery, such that the people do not resemble human beings anymore. They will be taught from birth onward that they are not human, and are there to serve the Screen Actor Guild, “Master Race”. Since the surgical interventions are applied from birth onward in parallel tandem with the “British Still” education, the subjects will not recognize themselves as ever having been a human being. They will be crafted with surgically specific goals in mind to perform specific tasks, while machinery is matched to the standardized varieties of human, custom made, slave labor, to serve the Screen Actor Guild. Custom made people that ergonomically fit into custom made machinery for the purpose of performing tasks to serve the “Master Race” that SAG will have become, by order of the Queen of Britain.

That is a generalization of what is going on in USA and around the world, and what took place to get us into this predicament, and is what the future holds for human beings all over the world, in the event that there is no army available and willing to fight against the advance of Global Domination Under the Cross. The French Connection (1971); AFI #93

The current movie under review  is one of the biggest award winning police action dramas ever created, The French Connection (1971). The film was nominated for 8 Academy Awards and won 5 Oscars in 1972 for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Gene Hackman), Best Screenplay, and Best Editing. The story also includes Roy Scheider prior to his Jaws fame as a buddy sidekick. In fact, this movie was part of a string of great “buddy” movies that included In the Heat of the Night (1967), Midnight Cowboy (1969), Butch Cassidy NS the Sundance Kid (1969), The Sting (1973), and All the President’s Men (1976). The French Connection has a lot of interesting Americana connections that I want to discuss, but first let’s go over the plot. Of course that means the usual:

SPOILER ALERT!!! LEGITAMATELY!!! A LOT OF PEOPLE KNOW THE GENERAL STORY AND PROBABLY THE PLOT OUTLINE WITHOUT EVER SEEING THE FILM!!! CHECK OUT THE FILM FIRST AND THEN COME BACK TO AVOID SPOILER DETAILS!!!

The movie starts in France where an undercover detective is following a heroine smuggler named Alain Charnier (Fernando Rey). This detective is then followed home by Charnier's hitman, Pierre Nicoli (Marcel Bozzuffi), and is assassinated. Charnier plans to smuggle $32 million worth of heroin into the United States by hiding it in the car of his unsuspecting friend, television personality Henri Devereaux, who is traveling to New York City by ship.

Flash to New York City, where we see detectives Jimmy "Popeye" Doyle (Gene Hackman) and Buddy "Cloudy" Russo are staking out a club trying to nab a perp. They get a tip that some low level mobsters are part of a deal to sell a bunch of French heroin to gangs in America. Out at the Copacabana, Popeye notices Salvatore "Sal" Boca and his young wife, Angie, entertaining mobsters involved in narcotics. They tail the couple and establish a link between the Bocas and lawyer Joel Weinstock, who is part of the narcotics underworld.

Popeye goes to a bar that seems to serve only black patrons and shakes down everybody there. He secretly has an informant in the group and learns that a massive shipment of heroin will arrive in the next two weeks. The detectives convince their supervisor to wiretap the Bocas' phones. Popeye and Cloudy are joined by federal agents Mulderig and Klein, both of whom Popeye is not a fan of.

The drug car arrives in New York City. Boca is impatient to make the purchase—reflecting Charnier's desire to return to France as soon as possible—while Weinstock, with more experience in smuggling, urges patience, knowing Boca's phone is tapped and that they are being investigated.

Charnier realizes he is being observed. He "makes" Popeye and escapes on a departing subway shuttle. To avoid being tailed, he has Boca meet him in Washington D.C., where Boca asks for a delay to avoid the police. Charnier, however, wants to conclude the deal quickly. On the flight back to New York City, Nicoli offers to kill Popeye, but Charnier objects, knowing that Popeye would be replaced by another policeman. Nicoli insists, however, saying they will be back in France before a replacement is assigned.

Soon after, Nicoli attempts to shoot Popeye but misses and hits an innocent bystander instead. Popeye chases Nicoli up on a roof and eventually onto an elevated train that Nicoli makes and Popeye does not. Popeye commandeers a car and races to the next stop while barely avoiding traffic. Realizing he is being pursued, Nicoli works his way forward through the carriages, shoots a policeman who tries to intervene, and hijacks the motorman at gunpoint, forcing him to drive straight through the next station, also shooting the train conductor. The motorman passes out and they are just about to slam into a stationary train when an emergency trackside brake engages, hurling the assassin against a glass window. Popeye arrives to see the killer descending from the platform in an attempt to escape. When the killer sees Popeye, he turns to run but is shot dead by Popeye.

Popeye and Cloudy have a lengthy stakeout of the car that connects all the mobsters and has the opportunity to impound it when some gangsters see it and attempt to strip it. He and his team take it apart searching for the drugs, but come up empty-handed. Cloudy notes that the vehicle's shipping weight is 120 pounds over its listed manufacturer's weight. They remove the rocker panels and discover the heroin concealed therein. The police restore the car to its original condition and return it to Devereaux, who delivers the Lincoln Continental to Charnier.

Charnier drives to an old factory on Wards Island to meet Weinstock and deliver the drugs. After Charnier has the rocker panels removed, Weinstock's chemist tests one of the bags and confirms its quality. Charnier removes the drugs and hides the money, concealing it beneath the rocker panels of another car purchased at an auction of junk cars, which he will take back to France. Charnier and Sal drive off in the Lincoln, but hit a roadblock with a large contingent of police led by Popeye. The police chase the Lincoln back to the factory, where Boca is killed during a shootout while most of the other criminals surrender.

Charnier escapes into the warehouse with Popeye and Cloudy in pursuit. Popeye sees a shadowy figure in the distance and opens fire a split-second after shouting a warning, killing one of the feds, Mulderig, that he had been partnered with. Undaunted, Popeye tells Cloudy that he will get Charnier. After reloading his gun, Popeye runs into another room and a single gunshot is heard.

Title cards note that Weinstock was indicted but his case dismissed for "lack of proper evidence"; Angie Boca received a suspended sentence for an unspecified misdemeanor; Lou Boca received a reduced sentence; Devereaux served four years in a federal penitentiary for conspiracy; and Charnier was never caught. Popeye and Cloudy were transferred out of the narcotics division and reassigned.

So this film has some of the most well known scenes in cinema history and I say this because they are copied a lot. The first scene when Popeye and Cloudy are on a stakeout, Popeye is disguised as Santa and receives a knife wound in his hand. This came back years later in Hot Fuzz! when Simon Pegg, as a police officer, was stabbed through the hand by a man dressed as Santa. In the Jackie Chan film Rush Hour, Chris Tucker goes into a bar pretending to shake down the group when he actually knows the group and jokingly asks his informant questions. 

Maybe one of the biggest aspects of the realism of the movie that director Friedkin insisted upon, was that the two cops that Popeye and Cloudy were based upon were in the movie. Jimmy Doyle was based on a cop named Eddie Egan and Buddy Rosso was based upon his partner Sonny Grosso. Egan and Grosso broke up the actual French Connection back in 1951. A book by Robin Moore that shares the name of the movie details the bust and this is what the movie was based on. For extra realism, the two real cops played the chief and one of the feds. Well, I say promote realism although Friedkin did not like the book and didn’t follow it as closely as he claims. There was no chase or shootout in the book. That was all there for drama.

The ending title cards were very interesting because it reminds the audience that 1) Friedkin cut his teeth with documentaries 2) the movie wasn’t going to show the whole seven month drug bust and 3) all the bad guys got away or got slaps on the wrist and the two cops were transferred out. This was a huge bust that didn’t really work out (although it stopped the trafficking) allowing the mobsters to escape and putting a stop to two careers. It is what I like most, however, because I don’t want to see a realistic movie in which the only interesting scenes are the ones that are not based on any facts. 

So should this movie be on the AFI list? Yes. It was the basis for gritty TV cop shows like The Streets of San Francisco and Starsky & Hutch. It has one of the greatest car chase scenes in cinema history. It won many awards and is known by those who haven’t seen the film. It is definitely AFI material. Would I recommend it? Well...not to kids. It has a ton of overt racism that is pretty uncomfortable to watch as well as some pretty terrible police work. The two cops were on set and they were OK with this? The film claims to be based on a real bust and the only cinematic parts of interest were made up. These white cops keep going into black bars and knocking everyone around but just chase after the French guys. White men are all detectives and assassins and mob bosses while anyone of color are just props to be knocked around to move the plot along. I would watch it again as a piece of cinema history and it is a progenitor of the 70s cop dramas, but I wouldn’t show it to my students because I don’t want them to think that it is OK for the police to rough up any number of black people as long as it might bring information about a mob boss. It is a good story with a bad message that needs some maturity to recognize the faults.

The 25 Best Lawyer Movies of All Time

Happy New Year everyone! I hope that you’ve had a wonderful 2019 and are looking forward to paying off debt, building wealth and achieving financial independence in 2020.

Today’s post is totally for fun – and I hope you have as much fun with it as I had creating it. Below are the 25 best lawyer movies of all times (in my opinion), complete with clips from some of the best scenes. Did I leave anything out? If so, let me know in the comments.

Enjoy the downtime during the holidays (assuming you got it) and enjoy the cheap entertainment below, some of which can be streamed on Netflix and all of which can probably be obtained for less than $10.

1. My Cousin Vinny (1992)

Directed by Jonathan Lynn and written by Dale Launer, My Cousin Vinny follows two young New Yorkers, Bill Gambini and Stan Rothenstein, who are arrested and put on trial for murder while traveling in rural Alabama. The fate of these men rests in the hands of Vincent Gambini (Vinny) a cousin of Bill’s and a lawyer who’s just barely passed the bar exam. 

Gambini, played by Joe Pesci, does his best to defend his cousin and his cousin’s friend but makes a number of missteps along the way. Gambini’s fiancee, Mona Lisa, who is played by Marisa Tomei, is instrumental in helping him with his defense.

Trivia: Marisa Tomei received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role.

2. 12 Angry Men (1957)

This classic courtroom drama was directed by Sidney Lumet and details the deliberations of 12 men, all of whom are part of the jury deciding the fate of a poor young man who’s been accused of murder. If found guilty, he will face the death penalty.

The film begins with all jurors except for Juror 8 agreeing that the young man is guilty. Juror 8, played by Henry Fonda, encourages his fellow jurors to discuss the defendant’s case before sentencing him to death. Throughout the discussions, many of the jurors go back and forth, changing their votes as their forced to confront certain aspects of the case that they initially dismissed.

Trivia: The film was shot in less than three weeks.

3. Anatomy of a Murder (1959)

Deemed one of the greatest courtroom dramas of all time and based on the novel with the same title, Anatomy of a Murder follows Michigan lawyer Paul Biegler (played by James Stewart), who has his work cut out for him after agreeing to defend Lt. Manion (played by Ben Gazzarra), who murdered a local bar owner after learning he’s been accused of rape.

Biegler, who is encouraged to take the case by his mentor, Parnell McCarthy, played by Arthur O’Connell, must go up against big-city prosecutor Claude Dancer (played by George C. Scott) in order to help his client.

Trivia: The novel upon which the film is based was written by John D. Voelker (under the pseudonym Robert Traver), a Michigan Supreme Court justice.

4. The Lincoln Lawyer (2011)

Directed by Brad Furman, The Lincoln Lawyer stars Matthew McConaughey as Mick Haller, a defense attorney who runs his law practice out of a Lincoln Continental. Mick’s clientele is comprised mainly of petty criminals, but he’s surprisingly presented with an opportunity to defend a wealthy Beverly Hills playboy by the name of Louis Ross Roulet, played by Ryan Phillippe, who’s been accused of attempted murder.

At first, Mick assumes that the case will be an easy, open-and-shut affair. He soon learns, though, that there’s more to it than meets the eye and that it’s connected with a previous case of his.
