I found a nice plant in a bog last year, like a reed with a tuft of very soft cotton at the top (bless you English, I just looked up "plant that grows in a bog and looks like cotton" and the English language replied "bog cotton, duh") (in French it's called linaigrette, which should be a small bird), and I was very charmed by the look of it and decided to try to pirate it so I would have some on my land. I plucked one fluffy reed and kept it on my windowsill so I wouldn't forget to return.
Of course, when I returned a few days later with a shovel and a bucket, I couldn't find the bog cotton again. Or the bog. It was a small swamp-y area in a very vast plateau with few landmarks, so it's possible I got turned around, but also, things tend to disappear around here sometimes, like the footpath that leads to the stream, only to reappear a few weeks later. I very much felt like I was in the correct location and the bog wasn't, but okay. Since I didn't trust myself to tell the normal reeds from the cotton-y ones in other seasons, I decided I'd come back around the same time next year.
I've had the linaigrette in my egg spiral in the kitchen this whole time as a memento, and I finally resumed my quest today. I left my car in the exact same spot where I'd left it the previous two times, just before the road gets squiggly for no apparent reason:
I climbed the hill and behind it were just miles and miles of estives (summer cow pastures) with sometimes a barn here and there with a mobile milking parlour. My plan was to follow every rivulet I came across, since I was looking for a watery area.
I picked a barn as a landmark to find my car again, and off we went.
Finding reeds wasn't difficult, but none of them had cotton tufts...
Pandolf was extremely aware that we were looking for something, but he wasn't sure what. Here he is digging in the mud with his paw, looking invested in this treasure hunt.
Sometimes he would stop with one paw poised in the air and his whole body pointed forwards like an English setter who just smelled a pheasant in a Heywood Hardy painting and it was always for cow herds. If I squinted and squinted I could be sure to find a cow on the horizon, the size of an ant—I think Pan was a bit disappointed when he realised I never followed up on the cows he smelled, and it probably wasn't cows we were looking for.
(zoom x400 in case you can't see this cow standing apart from her herd like a sentinel)
I tried to amuse him by giving him little challenges here and there, like climbing on big rocks because he likes rocks. He likes being congratulated even more, though, and if I didn't insist that he actually climb on the rock he would just sort of run towards it and push himself off of it like a swimmer doing a flip turn at the wall to run back to me even faster (for pats). (Had to turn off the sound in the video because the wind was loud, so I subtitled our dialogue)
Some challenges he politely declined to do. I like how despite being very eager to please he sometimes gives me very clear "no thank you"s when I tell him to do something that sounds absurd to him. We found a little waterfall that went down a slope like a mud toboggan and I said "down!" to tell him to slide down that thing and he was like
Our strategy of following water paid off, because look what we found eventually!!
I had a very hard time digging up one clump of reeds with some roots; the bog was holding on to its cotton for dear life. Every time I opened a hole in the mud with my shovel with a horrible sucking noise, the bog would immediately close on itself again with an even stronger vacuum. It also tried to eat my boots, repeatedly. When I moved around the reeds I was trying to steal I had to take my foot out of my boot, stand on one leg like a heron and put the tip of my shovel under the sole of the boot to pry it up. But after maybe 20min of effort, the bog finally let go of one muddy clump of reeds in a loud, dejected SLURP and I was able to put it in my bucket. It was about 10x heavier than I expected so the walk back to my car was slow!
(One thing to keep in mind if you're going to wrestle a swamp for half an hour, is that you're going to end up looking and smelling like a swamp creature. I had to stop at the post office to send a parcel and I really regretted not doing it earlier. It's funny because the post office lady is always like "no, don't worry, come in!! <3" when you show up on rainy days apologising for your muddy shoes, but when I arrived today and asked her from the entrance if I should just throw my parcel at her rather than go in, with my socks making a pitiful plop-plop sound in my boots as I walked, and mud freckles all over my face from aggressive shovelling, and overall looking like a gravedigger, she took one look at me and went "... yes, throw it.")
The good news is, I didn't get lost returning from the swamp to my car, and had no trouble finding my barn-landmark again, and there were new animals there, a nice mule with a retinue of small ponies.
She was friendly at first but then soured on me when I refused to let her sniff and maybe taste the reeds I'd had so much trouble digging up, and then she wouldn't let me approach her ponies.
One of the ponies approached Pandolf, and I told him to stand still—we've been working on "reste là !" (stay there) for a while and it's hard because he's so friendly and exuberant, so I was very proud of him when he stood there frozen as a marble statue, waiting for the pony to come closer. The pony ended up stopping at a prudent distance and stretching his neck out to try and sniff Pandolf, it was very cute.
That's the end of the quest for bog cotton! Here it is now, transplanted to the swamp-y part of my pasture, I hope it'll like it here.

A Comprehensive Timeline of the History of Pridaxus
Key:
BST- Before Standard Time
DST- During Standard Time
89 BST- The peace happening in the world is disturbed by 4 factions of fighting people, the costal “pirates” who live on the coasts of Glimmerier, the farmers of Glimmerier, the miners of Elvenwick, and the wealthy merchants (who employed said miners) of Idealps. These pirates were exiled by Glimmerier to the coasts, and in their time of exile they began to terrorize the two other main nations. In their confusion Idealps and their colony Elvenwick declares war on Glimmerier blaming them for the pirate invasions. Many of the information on the battles that will take place over the next 100 years have been lost throughout time but the first battle was the Battle of Linaigrette which was a hue loss for the Glimmerier forces.
44 BST- In a surprising act in the middle of the war, Elvenwick declares their independence from Idealps, the declares war on them
0- At the dawn of this new year, after 44 years of declaring independence the people of Elvenwick revitalize their control over their country. They created a Royal family, a man at the head, Johannes Astasuel who they believe descended from the goddess Vatia who they prayed to in secret. Even though this was not accepted by Idealps, the new nation of Elvenwick broke the chains that they were formally under
11 DST- Under Queen Ipomée of Glimmerier’s reign she stops sending food out of the country in an effort to end the war, which is successful. She created the TAN (Triad Association of Nations) , an organization to create peace, as well as the Treaty of Roses. The important parts of the Treaty were: the reestablishment of trades, the independence of Elvenwick as its own country, the permanent exile of the former pirates to an island named Nereus, and dedication to peace between the three nations. To cement this Ipomee offered her younger sister Noisette in marriage to the King of Idealps, as well as her youngest sister Soleirole to govern the newly exiled who now reside on Nereus. Other notes to add into this was the new calendar system. Year 0 would be the year that the Elvenwick calendar observed it as, however they would adopt the 12 month system of Idealps unlike the 6 month system of Elvenwick.
24 DST- Idealps begins their dedication to food science after the threat of losing food from Glimmerier in 11DST. This will last for over 250 years but the results will be fruitless
34 DST- Nereus pirates begin exploring more of the ocean staying away from the nations. They discover the Loes, the Ondes, and Aliria.
35 DST- The former people of Nereus declare themselves a nation. Not wanting a useless fight the TAN accepts them as a nation but not under the TAN. They give them rules that they can keep any islands near Nereus. They call their nation Amphinis.
74 DST- Amphinis explorers travel to Sweetfish Island, Lily Rock and Twin Island and claim them under Amphinis. Elvenwick wishes to go to war, but Glimmerier and Idealps decide that war would not be best and that even with all of their islands Amphinis would not gain power to effectively fight either nation. Amphinis is allowed a seat in TAN which has been renamed AoPN (Association of Peaceful Nations), with the condition that this time they will actually agree too and follow the rules.
118 DST- The Nereus Postal System was founded.
159 DST- Idealps devotes themselves to mass self isolation, they only rely on precious metal and stuff from Elvenwick and food from Glimmerier, they try to produce everything themselves.
202 DST- A minor chocolate war begins, it is a bloodless war but after Amphinis places a strict monopoly on chocolate, Glimmerier desperately tries to get access to some cacao beans.
265 DST- Philosopher Hou Shoushan in Idealps creates a school that is for all of the brightest students from all over. The school is 90% Idealps’ natives but is the only method in which non Idealps’ natives have to get into the country. This school is the School of Miletus.
278 DST- Glimmerier finally gets authentic cacao beans, however they realize that the soil in Glimmerier is not equipped to grow cacao ending the Chocolate War.
289 DST- The Idealps royal family is caught in a huge scandal, causing the death of the entire immediate family minus one of the younger prince’s as he was away at school. Perpetrators were immediately executed
353 DST- Major fire at a port at Fynn Port in Elvenwick, 172 people died from it.
457 DST- The Library of Asoaire is created in Idealps, this is the largest library anywhere in the world. A census is also formed in Idealps.
476 DST- The rest of the world adopted this census system but a unanimous vote in the AoPN.
515 DST- Elvenwick creates canons, these are seized by the AoPN who places them in the Library of Asoaire for safekeeping
565 DST- Part of the School of Miletus catches on fire, killing 86 staff members and 336 students, and destroying many of the books and materials. The School shut down for some time but foreign students were allowed to stay in Idealps.
569 DST- The School of Miletus was reconstructed and classes restarted. Foreign enrollment went up.
615 DST- To promote peace and unity Elvenwick and Glimmerier the first Filokensia Games, to commemorate the marriage of a royal prince and princess between the two nations. These games take place once every 5 years (alternating between the two countries as locations) and all people can join. The first winner of the Elvenwick Filokensia Games was a participant from Idealps.
708 DST- Major rebellion between miners in Elvenwick against the nobility. Minor civil war starts.
716 DST- To not break the Treaty of the Roses but to get more money many members of the Nereus Postal Service offered to be hired as “guards” for nobles in Elvenwick, becoming Elvenwick citizens and taking out the rebellion. These people were awarded graciously, which led to a golden period of wealth for Amphinis, momentarily making them the richest country.
717 DST- Idealps began mass producing and training artists, increasing funding for the School of Miletus’ arts astronomically. This was an attempt to regain their spot as the richest country, as these artists would go to the countryside of Glimmerier and overcharge Ladies and Lords in order to bring more wealth to Idealps. Amphinis competed by increasing tourism to their islands.
720 DST- The largest economic crash of Glimmerier who was pumping money of of the country.
721 DST- Idealps had an even larger cash flow crash, people began selling their possessions to have enough to survive their opulent lives
735 DST- Glimmerier goes into an emergency state and creates the Treaty of Taesi with Elvenwick. Glimmerier agrees to give more crops to Elvenwick in exchange for more funds.
737 DST- Idealps increases tuition for foreign students to attend Miletus and also temporarily opens the country to outsiders in an attempt to amend the financial crisis
740 DST- By this point all of the economies are stabilized and all is well, Idealps has closed down again.
751 DST- Minor tensions arise when a new rare mineral is found in Elvenwick. The AoPN solves this by placing this in the Library of Asoaire. This proves to be an unpopular decision when rebellion (against Idealps) breaks out as a result.
820 DST- A virus breaks out in Amphinis, which spreads quickly. In its 5 years of terror 7700 people died. It is the most catastrophic event in all of the history of all 4 nations.
825 DST- Idealps comes up with the cure and the AoPN established a mass vaccination mandate. Idealps is restored to favor.
863 DST- In the middle of Sweetfish island in Amphinis a desert cult begins to thrive having their own scholars similar to the ones in Idealps.
912 DST- Idealps scientists visit Glimmerier in an attempt to reawaken the food science experiments. Idealps begins learning to plant some things however this visit is proves that Idealps doesnt have the temperature required to make most
949 DST- Elvenwick begins to create weapons secretly and out of the eye of the AoPN
973 DST- The Nereus Postal Service comes in competition with Idealps who have created a Griffith mail system (which is much quicker but also much smaller)
988 DST- Amphinis recreates its exploration team.
✨ 1011 DST- A ball takes place in Idealps to commemorate the 1000th year of peace. For the whole year people are allowed to travel in and out of Idealps.
1013 DST- Gaeleath of Elvenwick, the ruler, was accidentally assassinated. The intended target was his advisor.
1043 DST- Famine causes Glimmerier crop production to go down. Eerikki of Elvenwick, the ruler, gets suspicious that Glimmerier is in fact stockpiling food.
1049 DST- A hard winter in Elvenwick drastically worsens the effect of the food shortage, many people die.
1051 DST- Elvenwick invades Glimmerier and leaves the AoPN. Glimmerier who is now also under Elvenwick control are forcibly removed from the AoPN.
1057- In response to the death of his mother, Eerikki launches an attack on Glimmerier killing 1700 people, including an attack on the royal children the AoPN steps in an swiftly attacks Elvenwick taking Eerikki as a captive
1058- Eerikki is executed by the AoPN. Elvenwick and Glimmerier rejoin the AoPN, with Elvenwick under strict attention. To promote peace Queen Asteria engages her oldest daughter Princess Liliosa to Princess Elvira of Elvenwick (At the time known as Prince Aerendyl).
Thats the present for ya boys
