Review #1 - Imaginary Friend (2012)

Okay, so I'm starting with one of my favorite movies.

Genre: Horror/Drama

Content Warnings: Abuse, child abuse, domestic violence, gaslighting, overmedicating, homicide, involuntary commitment, infidelity, death.

Spoilers inbound!

Movie Summary: Emma, a formerly abused rich lady with schizophrenia is gaslit and overmedicated by her psychiatrist husband Brad who's trying to have her committed so he can have her inherited fortune. His method of gaslighting? Hiring his former mistress Brittany to pretend to be his wife's imaginary friend Lily.

Is the IF actually and IF or something else? She's a normal human adult woman pretending to be an imaginary friend for about 85% of the runtime. So, not technically an IF movie, but she is very convincing in her part.

What does the IF do? What are their interactions like? Lily was originally Emma's imaginary friend in childhood when she was coping with her abusive father. Brittany (as Lily, hereinafter referred to as Lily B) acts as a supportive force for Emma. She knows Emma's problems and offers words of encouragement and support. She's also physically comforting to Emma, with Emma basking in every hand touch or hug. Additionally, the two of them actually hang out a lot! Many scenes play out like: "Emma paints while Lily B watches," or the two of them go swimming together, or the two of them just hang out and talk by the pool. Lily B FEELS like a real imaginary friend, and she interacts like an adult IF of an adult would interact. It's nice seeing a depiction of an adult with an IF that isn't babyish or obtrusive or even remotely whimsical. They're just hanging out, it's just that one of them isn't real and knows everything about you so you don't have to struggle to be vulnerable.

Gripes/Negative/Misc: Lily B is originally depicted to be scary in a full body apparition hallucination kind of way, and it feels like it takes forever to get past that, but once Emma settles down and gives her a chance, they don't hit any rough patches. In the end, LilyB even comes out to Emma as a real person, and the two of them team up to pull an uno reverso on Brad until he's involuntarily committed. I don't like characters being involuntarily committed, especially when it's depicted as their "just desserts." But as for the schizospec/psychosis rep, I can't really complain. It's established that Brad is gaslighting and overmedicating Emma, and her meltdowns and reactions to his treatment are justified and well written. I can't remember if she's canonically psychotic or if her husband maliciously misdiagnosed her, but it's irrelevant to me. Psychosis can occur in anyone, and it's likely to happen when your only connection to the outside world is gaslighting you anyway.

Conclusion: The movie itself is really nice! Two women in a relationship with a cheating guy team up and take care of each other and are just really good friends and supportive of each other the whole ride. Local man has gaslit too close to the sun.
