How to Spend Less On Necessities
Get $1,000 to Spend on Groceries!
Tumblr media
Many people don't realize that the reason the price they pay for groceries fluctuates with the price of gas. Fuel that is used to deliver goods to the stores is a big factor in the price we receive. If the price of survival is a little too much to handle, there are some steps you can take to whittle your grocery bill down and still enjoy some special treats. there are also some popular tips that might not be the best solution for you.
Extreme Couponing Even if you haven't seen the show on TV, you have probably heard about extreme couponing. If you go to purchase a local Sunday paper and find that there aren't any left, it probably isn't because everyone wanted to see who won the big game. More likely, it contained an especially big section of coupons and the extreme couponers are storing up. As tempting as it may be to join the ranks of those who manage to get hundreds of dollars of groceries at almost no charge, there are some important factors to keep in mind. The first is that these people devote hours each day to clipping, trading and planning their purchases. If you have nothing but time on your hands, then you may be up to the challenge. If, on the other hand, you have to work for a living, you probably don't have the time to spare.

Another important consideration is that not all stores have the same policies on coupons. Many do not allow multiple coupons to be used on one item or they limit the number of coupons you can use on the same type of item. Some stores are also limiting coupon use altogether because of the practices of these individuals.
Many of the purchases that these people make have to be during a specific time frame in order to get the great deals you see advertised. If you don't have a big, empty basement, you may not consider keeping a hundred bottles of shampoo or ketchup on-hand a real convenience. There is also the concern that some products don't age well. For instance, toothpaste can become dry in the tube and that isn't any fun when it's time to use your surplus to brush!

Skip the Produce Department
During the summer and early fall months, the local Farmer's Market has a lot more to offer than you will find in almost any grocery store. Even those stores that sell locally grown produce usually do so at a substantially higher price than local sellers. You will get a fresher selection and a lower cost that can add up to significant savings.
During the winter months when fresh produce isn't available, head to the freezer. You may find that frozen vegetables, especially store brands, are a lot cheaper than those in the produce aisle. While a head of cauliflower costs more than $3, you can find a bag of frozen cauliflower for about $1. Since these vegetables are frozen during their peak, they are in better shape than many of those that are shipped in from other countries and sold as fresh.
Don't Buy Toiletries at the Grocery
Try to get all of your soaps, cleaners, and other household items at one time instead of making multiple trips to the store. Keep a separate list for these items and go to the dollar store when you need to make a purchase. As convenient as it might seem to throw them into your grocery cart, the amount you save will be well worth the time and effort to make an extra stop. Some items, such as razors or razor blades, are priced even higher in the grocery than they are in discount stores. For this type of item, consider turning to generic or store brands.
Stick with One Grocery Store
People like to shop around, with many making the trip to three different groceries in order to take advantage of sales. Instead, purchase sale items in higher quantities when possible so that you don't have to buy again until the next sale. The way most groceries operate today, you reap big customer rewards for shopping in the same place. These may far outweigh the savings you might get from going elsewhere. Besides, if the stores are far apart, you will be spending the difference on fuel to make the trip.
Use Online Coupons
Digital coupons can make a big difference in the total on your bill with virtually no effort on your part. Just log into your grocery store account, choose those coupons that apply to items you NEED and load them onto your account. When you go through the checkout, they will be automatically applied. The only downfall to this method is that they won't be doubled like regular coupons. However, you can compare sale items and matching coupons from home so that checking out is hassle-free and you still get all of the savings.
Take Advantage of Fuel Rewards
The big groceries that give fuel rewards based on the amount you spend on groceries can at least make you feel like you are getting something extra for your money. Make sure you take advantage of any fuel rewards programs that can save you money for free.
Going to the grocery doesn't have to be painful. I know how difficult it can be to make ends meet and I have learned some tips that make it a little easier week after week.
