“Teenage Lobotomy” TW: Mental illness When I was a freshman in high school I felt like I lived a double life, breezing through assignments to stay up watching The Mary Tyler Moore Show, making comics, and listening to a lot of @pinkfloyd. I was really into 60s/70s counterculture and psychedelia and it was then that I read #oneflewoverthecuckoosnest and it had a super profound impact on me. Pre-diagnosis but definitely angst and severely depressed and with a familial history of mental illness and a childhood spent with my only surviving grandmother bound to a nursing home (read: psych ward) with paranoia-schizophrenia, I recognized (albeit in a rebellious adolescent way) the systemic failings of the American mental health system and neurotypical hegemony, like seeing my own reflection for the first time. Being on-brand even then, 15-year-old me wrote a literary analysis comparing #kenkesey ‘s classic to Floyd’s “Time, highlighting in particular the rabbit metaphor for madness. With the debut of @ratchednetflix , my impending move to Oregon, and recent reading about Kesey and the #merrypranksters , this has all been on my mind. That and my want for a break with nostalgic thinking and a romantic view of the past, which is in its way, it’s own entrapment; it’s own rabbit warren.
