I've never seen a genuine criticism of the 2004 phantom of the opera movie that actually makes sense

this is so long please read if it interests you and skip if it doesnt i genuinely just couldnt stop thinking of things to add.
i used to wonder why antisemites would constantly make up criticisms about zionism that are either blatantly false or a misunderstanding of facts. especially when jewish antizionists have consistently been able to find real criticisms of zionism and analyze them based on jewish history and personal experience (tbh i dont consider any goyim to be antizionist or zionist but that's not the point). it's definitely not a problem of "valid criticisms of zionism dont exist". even when i dont agree with jewish antizionists i usually understand how they got to their conclusion and i find it fully respectable. also when i say factual/valid criticisms i dont just mean shit i personally agree with. im a zionist with plenty of criticisms about the movement (yeah I know it's ironic). all i mean by that is a criticism of zionism that is backed up by facts.
imo antisemites either explicitly or implicitly know that if they look up factual criticisms of zionism they'll also have to learn about the positive stuff. it's all intertwined. to a lot of jewish people this isnt that big of a deal. we're raised to ask questions and we're taught how to formulate a good argument from a young age. its pretty normal for us to critique things that we generally support or find postives in things we generally critique. however, goyim are much less likely to be raised this way. obviously some are but the dichotomy of good and bad is much more prevalent in goyische culture than jewish. of course we know some shit is good and other shit is bad, we're not fuckin idiots, but nuance is integral to us.
i dont know what it feels like to be raised in a culture with a strong difference between good and bad. it doesnt make sense to me at all. however id assume that that upbringing combined with social media, which favors quick, shocking information, would result in something like goyim constantly glazing over factual critcisms of zionism and just making shit up. the made up shit is simultaneously more gut-wrenching and easier to digest due to its simplicity. it's really fucking hard to accept that zionism is so complex if youve been taught that things are always just good or bad. and even harder if your activism began and ended with social media instead of a medium that favors long-form content.
you cannot research zionism without being whacked in the face with nuance. its the reason i research zionist history more than zionist theory because that shit is so confusing sometimes (said with love). learning about zionism isn't an easy task at all. ive been doing it seriously for around 5 years and casually since i was a small child and i still learn shit every day. if i studied zionism for hours every day id probably still have something to learn when i die.
antisemites do not like being called antisemites, so they try to learn things about jewish history and then fail. they dont actually care about the information they just want to seem like they know something. they are not doing this for the benefit of jewish people. they wont actually spread true jewish history or recommend jewish creators that could share correct information. they'll instead say bare minimum shit that makes themselves feel proud for saying the word "jewish" and their followers are making death threats towards zionists.
ive seen some goyim say some factual things about zionism and stay in their lane while doing so, both things i rlly appreciate. and time and time again they're met with antisemitic conspiracies, death threats, doxxing, etc. not as much as jewish people are but still a lot. most people are not ready and may never be ready to support jews through the good and the bad.
this ties into the idea of the "innocent" victim. the one who is pure and kind, who never said a bad word about anyone and saved baby mice from fires. this idea of the innocent victim exists in war, abuse, crime, literally anywhere where someone's human rights are violated. however even if someone is innocent in a particular situation most people are not 100% good and innocent all the time. there's a few exceptions like babies (although i do know some babies that are fucking assholes) but in general people are a mix of good and bad.
jewish people do not shy away from being both good and bad. we embrace it with open arms and even though we try to improve our bad traits we dont fear them. "the only good jew is a dead jew" is fitting because when someone is dead you can make so much up. you can pretend they were incapable of every doing anything even remotely bad. you can say the poor jew who died was your biggest inspiration even though you scoffed at them every time they opened their mouth.
and this is why antisemites hate zionism so much and love making up false critcisms. because it throws concepts like black and white morality, the desire to consume information quickly, and the innocent victim into the fucking mud. then it punches it and steps on it and kicks it. anything and anyone that favors simple information over complicated information, not matter how incorrect, is going to have a hard time discussing zionism. people want to know things, yet sometimes they dont wanna actually put in the work to learn the correct information from good sources because that's hard work and antisemites do not want to put in hard work regarding jewish history.
if you believe im gonna solve antisemitism singlehandedly then who the fuck do you think i am. this isnt going away anytime soon. however you can do shit to help. study zionism on your own time and develop your own opinions on it. i highly recommend focusing on 1-3 specific topics trust me it's really confusing otherwise. teach others about it when you feel safe to do so. share resources with them and encourage them to do their own research. maybe point them to a specific aspect that relates to an interest they already have, and if you're mentally able to handle it call out antisemitic misinformation. a lot of people will not listen but there will always be at least one person who just needs a little bit of help starting.
anyway i may do actual research on this in the future because observations and i might turn it into a proper essay. I'll write one version where i say fuck and another where I don't.

I'm gonna ramble for a minute for something that's been eating at me ever since this dropped. I find it wild the amount of flak and hate this video is getting and from chuds who are now going to videos a decade old and saying "they've always been bad/jello fell off".
I should preface saying; I fucking love one piece. It's one of my favorite pieces of media and I have tattoos to show my love for it. I've grown up with this, I've watched the entirety of it and read it to its current release, I've done so for the past 20 years. So I really mean it whenever I say this series is important to me!
This video AIN'T fucking wrong about the points it makes and it's criticisms it has!
Luffy's last heartfelt interaction with a crew member of his was Whole Cake (before that was probably pre-time skip at Sabaody)
Anyone who isn't the big 3 don't get nearly as much screentime whenever things are happening or having a bigger role besides exposition/needs to be rescued
Don't fuckin lie to yourself about women having shit rep in OP
The sexualization of characters is a real fucking issue that so many people have with the series.
The 2 types of women in one piece boob and butt or shaped like a wide bowling pin.
Oda who has multiple times stated, "We could really learn a thing or two from Shojo writers" WHILE REFUSING TO EVEN TOUCH ON WHY PEOPLE WHO ENJOY SHOJO WOULDN'T EVEN GIVE OP A CHANCE
The series is really over-bloated with so many side characters where injuries/death means as little as it would in dragon ball I'm listing more just watch the fucking video
I had an interaction with someone who doesn't even stay up with it, watched the video, and then went, "yea I dunno he was a little mean to Oda I think that's fucked up". Brother, if this was any other random manga author you wouldn't even bat a fuckin eye about the jokes made at them. You just got a take from the comments and decided that's the one you're going with it.
Fuck, then there's the group bringing up the whole dubbing thing and like. I'll just be honest. If you're trying to spin a story to me about someone who got a dream job position, hired to do a show they hated and has pretty queerphobic rep, and instead they say tuck that and do it their way? I dunno man, that's pretty fuckin cool of someone who wouldn't compromise for their morals.
Someone tried saying one of the characters in the cut section was a trans character so it's just virtue signaling more than anything and I'm like, "ok. What pronouns do you use for Yamato then?? You apparently really care about the representation of queer folk so, OBVIOUSLY, we're not gonna have a bad discussion about this yea?"
This isn't even me trying to be like, oh I gotta defend my favoritest widdle guy who I have loved since forever. I'd do this shit on some randy who just dropped this with no other previous content!! Just because someone finally laid it all out there and took shots at the guy who's never really been criticized harshly for the bad stuff in their long running series of 25+ years and the mistakes they've made throughout it doesn't instantly invalidate the genuine issues the series has!
Also the Franky joke is funny! I sure would love more stuff to be done with that character IF ODA DECIDED HE WOULD WANT TO DO SOMETHING WITH THE CREW THAT WASN'T JUST FROM THE EAST BLUE!!

Ok finally finished watching the Cloverfield trilogy and I just have so many thoughts of this stupid fucking franchise (and I mean stupid in both a positive and derogatory way). I'll try to post my Letterboxd reviews soon cause I'm really behind on them, but I just need to talk about it right now.
First, the OG Cloverfield
Tumblr media
Imma say this right now and just get it out of the way, I don't really care about JJ Abrams. I know a lot of people have their problems with him as a "copy-cat king" and from what I've read that seems about right, but I also don't have much to say in the topic because I really don't care for any of his movies. Love him if you want, hate him if you want, I don't really care. Now with that out of the way, people are right that this is basically Godzilla, but I actually sort've like that premise. And that's coming from someone who doesn't enjoy found footage films. It touches greatly on post 9/11 anxiety and I like how they didn't really show the monster much like they do in Jaws. And the monster design is top tier, I fuckin love it. But these characters dude. They're so fucking stupid. They risk everything to try to save Beth(? I think that was her name? I don't remember honestly) but like my good bitch the town is fucking exploding around you. She's dead girlypop sometimes you just gotta let that shit go. Like come on. There's also one more thing about this movie I don't like, but this Letterboxd user summed it up best
Tumblr media
Next, 10 Cloverfield Lane
Tumblr media
(WARNING: this movie has strong themes of abuse and aggression that mirror domestic violence, which I mention here albeit not in detail. So keep that in mind if you plan on watching the movie.)
Ok, if you haven't watched this movie, stop right now and go watch it. This movie isn't the best film by far, but WATCH THIS SHIT BLIND. It's a fucking roller coaster and it's a fun watch. Did you go watch it? You didn't? Ok well I'm going to spoil the entire fuckin movie so that's on you.
Despite being called the "spiritual successor" of Cloverfield, this movie has really nothing to do with it except for the very end. And the reason for this is probably because this movie was actually supposed to be called The Cellar, but was turned into a Cloverfield film by Bad Robot. Honestly the ending was probably added specifically for that connection to Cloverfield and I could've done without it due to its stupidity and abruptness. But the rest of this movie? Holy fucking shit. This movie constantly has you questioning all the information you're being given and keeps you in suspense. It's got some genuinely unnerving moments and the cinematography is really fucking good; this video by Nocturnal Critic does a fantastic job of breaking down some of the framing choices during one of the most tense scenes and I seriously can't recommend it enough. The three main actors are absolutely incredible, but I'll be honest I'm incredibly biased towards one in particular. And that's John fuckin Goodman. It's an absolute crime that this man HASN'T gotten an Oscar. Dude's an acting powerhouse and he absolutely steals the fucking show in this movie. Like I can guarantee it wouldn't be nearly as good if it weren't for his performance that ups the unease and dread to 200. Not to take away from Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Gallagher Jr (who were also absolutely wonderful in their respective roles), Goodman just makes this movie. He manages to make Howard such a threatening character that genuinely made me uncomfortable at points for just how real it felt. I think the best example is the scene covered in the video I linked above: the dinner scene. Seeing an unsettling character snap is terrifying in of itself, but what's even more unsettling is when they don't snap when you expect them to. It really adds to the tension in a way I can't describe, especially when you factor in his treatment of Michelle and what we learn about Howard later on. And on that note, there is one problem I have with the major story besides the ending, and that's the plotline of Brittany and Megan. What exactly happened there, especially in the case of Brittany, is never really expanded on and feels like a major loose end. Apparently there was an ARG that expanded on this and Howard's involvement, but without it that plot line makes zero sense to me. Regardless of that and the unnecessary final 10 minutes connecting it to the previous Cloverfield movie, this one's by far the best out of the "trilogy".
And last and by far the least, The Cloverfield Paradox
Tumblr media
Lmao this movie fucking sucked. Like no joke this movie was shit. The story was confusing as fuck and I couldn't name a single character with a gun to my head. It actually made me laugh out loud with how absolutely fucking stupid everything about it was, but the moments in-between the laugher at the outrageous bullshit I was bored out of my mind. It just made me want to watch 10 Cloverfield Lane again. Fuck, I'd rather watch Cloverfield again and THAT movie has TJ Miller talking the entire damn time. Once again there's zero connection to the original film except for a spooky big boi alien you see at the VERY END. Everything about this movie isn't even worth talking about, so I'm not gonna!
So yeah those are my thoughts on the Cloverfield trilogy, although it's really not a trilogy just movies with the same name slapped on to them. You don't need to watch any one film to watch the others, and honestly I kinda wish I didn't. In my opinion only the first two are worth watching, with 10 Cloverfield Lane being the better watch out of the two.

Alright, look. Because of the truly exorbitant amount of Bucky/Sebastian Stan content I put on this blog I'm gonna make one post re: the most recent controversy because I feel it important to do so. Just bc I like him and the character he plays in the MCU does NOT mean I think he's immune to criticism. That said, reblogs and replies are turned off because I'm saying my one piece on the matter and have been having a string of real, genuine good days recently which even on meds doesn't happen often and I don't owe a single one of you on either side of this my mental health over a subject matter I really just don't want in my head any longer than it needs to be in there tbh
Also I'm doing this in bullet points bc that makes sense in my head and also am on mobile so can't put a read more on here so I'm sorry in advance for the wall of text. Without any further ado, let's unpack this.
Full disclosure: I am a 23 year old individual who did watch the series not knowing until after that it was made without Pamela's consent, only watched it bc Seb was in it, and was only tangentially aware of who the titular characters were (like I knew Baywatch and Motley Crüe and had heard Pamela's name before but like I knew nothing about any of it). I was born like 2 years after everything with the tape in question went down and really knew nothing about the situation with it. Thats not me trying to defend anything, I'm just laying everything out ahead of what I'm about to say.
So like most people at this point I read his insta post and I personally, GENUINELY think he did write it with the best of intentions. I don't think he was trying to be outwardly malicious or drag Pamela into it or invite harassment of her or anyone tbh. And like, dude got nominated for an Emmy, odds are he probably wrote it the midst of or coming off of a lot of excitement and probably wasn't thinking clearly. God knows I wouldn't be if I was in that situation
HOWEVER
This is NOT me excusing it as "well we all say dumb shit sometimes". Because that would be bad imo. Actors are not infallible or immune to criticism just because I like them imo. I'm currently going through a similar thing with my feelings on John Mulaney but that's a rant for another day and another blog.
Like I said, I don't think his intentions were anything other than good, and that he was trying to be genuine
That said I am a firm believer in the idea the Road to Hell is paved with good intentions, and that when you are a part of that you do need to own up to it.
His tagging Pamela (and Tommy for that matter, but for different reasons) was definitely a bad move, and the post overall read as extremely tone deaf. Like. Royally so.
And I definitely think the response to it, while a little harsh in some cases, isn't undeserved. What he said was a bad take and really poorly worded, and he needs to be called out
And I do hope he addresses it and apologizes in a meaningful way and does some introspection. But also I know there is a crowd that no matter what he does they'll say it's not good enough because there always is.
And that's NOT me saying every time a celebrity apologizes and people say it's not good enough it's undeserved (if I had a nickel for every Notes App Apology™️ one has made that was DEFINITELY not enough I could pay off my student loans)
And it's a valid take, people can do what they want. I don't expect to sway anybody.
But also I dunno. I don't think he's exempt or immune from criticism because he's famous or my celebrity crush or anything like that and I do think he needs to be held accountable for what he said and needs to address the backlash
But also he is a human being and human beings fuck up sometimes.
Both of these things can be true and not cancel out the other imo.
I do think the 'if you still support him you support abusers and seb needs to be blacklisted in Hollywood' takes are a little fuckin much honestly
But also the fans who are just sweeping this under the rug and dismissing it as 'everyone hating for no reason' also need to take a long hard look at it because what he said is kinda messed up seeing as he was talking about consent and exploitation whilst profiting off of a show made without consent about a victim of exploitation is Not Great
And like. You can like someone and acknowledge that they did a shit thing. These 2 things can coexist.
But also this isn't me trying to be some faux intellectual claiming moral superiority because I'm in the gray area or anything
I'm a Literally a 23 year old barely out of college person on the internet with limited life experience who likes the MCU and majored in theatre, I'm not going to pretend I'm some final authority or expert on this
I'm just one (1) person saying I see both sides but also maybe both sides need to calm down a bit
I know I'm just a drop in the ocean of discourse and I'm fine with that
Basically tl;dr: I think what Sebastian said and that he tagged Pamela was messed up and Hope he apologizes in a meaningful way but also know that means different things to different people, I am the farthest thing from an authority figure on the situation and just decided I wanted to say at least something based on the content of my blog.
I'm never sure how to end of of these but this is the end
