penny from the big bang theory deserved better

whenever i watch later episodes of the big bang theory i always get so annoyed that penny and leonard were endgame, and especially what became of their relationship and penny’s character. its ironic that leonard and penny’s relationship was originally the heart of the show while amy and sheldon’s was the butt of the jokes only that ended up being the opposite by the time the show was finished. amy and sheldon’s relationship became deep and meaningful while you were left wondering why leonard and penny were still married.

i dont really care for leonard as a character. i think he’s one of the worst cases of ‘nice guy syndrome’ in sitcoms. even worse than ross from friends and ted from HIMYM. hes just so whiny and such a weasel that its annoying whenever i see fans bash penny and treat leonard like a saint who did nothing wrong. from their first meeting, leonard mostly did things for penny because he wanted to sleep with her, therefore taking advantage of her financial instability, and not because hes such a ‘nice guy.’ the guys constantly make jokes about the lenghts leonard will go to to keep penny once he has her. then when he does have her, he cares more about her being successful than her being happy. leonard was such an ass when he threw penny’s insecurity about being a community college dropout back in her face and then again when she started taking classes and he rewrote her paper. leonard wanted the girl next door, but he also wanted her to be just as smart or academically inclined as him, which penny just wasnt. but i could live with penny and leonard being together if their relationship wasnt so badly written in the later seasons.

most of all, i just hate what became of penny in the later seasons: a sardonic alcoholic stuck in a job that made her feel like shit. and i hate how leonard really didnt care that penny wasnt happy with her job. if he doesnt care that penny’s job makes her miserable, he can cop the misery that comes with her. pennys obvious alcoholism and sardonic behaviour can definitely be attributed to her being stuck in a job that makes her unhappy. if penny was going to give up acting, i would have have her become an entrepreneur instead (remember the penny blossoms) or maybe even a designer. and don’t even get me started on penny being pregnant in the series finale after they had a season-long arc of her not wanting kids. even kaley cuoco hated that ending for penny.

the point is, the writers did penny so wrong and she deserved better.
