The more I watch of the Decameron on Netflix (I'm halfway through episode 4), the more I'm convinced the character Tinardo is autistic-coded. This would be cool and fun except that we're meant to find all his autistic traits either funny or bad/gross.
Like, scene after scene of how boring it is to listen to him talk about his interests. The joke of a scene being that he's understood a situation in the context of his interests Again. He's awkward and misunderstands social cues. He's loud and blunt. He has clear panic attacks and is easily overwhelmed. And all this is either framed as funny or annoying.
They set up his character as a parallel to incels. And he is a misogynistic ass. But that doesn't make it suddenly funny and okay for the jokes to be about him being autistic (or chronically ill! They make fun of that too, although it turns out to not be a chronic illness but still out of his control).
Like, every time they do a gag with him or frame something as gross, ask yourself what you're meant to be laughing at or be grossed out by. What's the joke?
You'd be surprised how often the joke is that he's too loud, too literal, too clueless, too happy in the wrong way, too autistic. (And it's fine for this stuff to be jokes sometimes, they can be funny. But this isn't laughing with. This is laughing at. This feels like mocking)
#tbh im not gonna watch anymore#it was just getting so uncomfortable#i hate him too hes an awful character in not a fun way#but im sick of seeing the joke boil down to traits me and my loved ones have#like when he gets upset she called his hair wavy#like yeah he was agressive about it abd i wouldnt be#but the joke was that he was upset and took her so literally when she gave him a compliment#netflix#the decameron#tinardo
