"I'm here!" Han announces his arrival and shouts it toward the beach.
Instead of feeling nervous, he feels good to be the first one to enter the villa. At least this way, he wouldn't feel intimidated when he sees people who are more good-looking than him.
There's not much to do with no one to interact with, he grabs one of the cocktails served on the small round table and takes a sip.
He turns the other way, sipping his cocktail while looking at the beautiful view of the sea that goes as far as his eyes can see.
"Oh, it's so gorgeous here," he says with a delightful sigh.
Little did he know, that's not the only gorgeous thing he'll see today.
-
HAN: I'm charming 24/7, that's for sure [laughs] Girls often say they like my smile [brightly smiles] and I won't disagree with that [chuckles] I'm all about a good chat, I'm good listener. I gather pieces of information, I use them at the right time, and [makes shooting gesture] That's part of the secret.
-
Han has to squint his eyes against the blinding sunlight and see two girls coming his way. He sips his drink to fuel his confidence and prepares himself to make a good first impression.
"Wow. You girls look amazing!" Han says out of wonder, not hesitating to let his thoughts out.
He hates to see women objectively but it's hard not to. Not when they're dressed in something that leaves so little to the imagination.
"We can say the same about you," The taller one says, talking as if she's half moaning.
"I'm Mikaela," she introduces herself, not hesitating to pull him into a hug.
Mikaela has shiny dark hair, plump lips, and a height he doesn't have, yet it's not going to stop him from pursuing her.
But it's too early to settle down yet. He turns to the other girl who's more his height and gives her a quick hug.
"I'm Han," he introduces his name first.
"I'm Nya," she replies.
Nya's brown skin glows under the sun and when she smiles, she shows her perfect white teeth.
"Can we drink this?" She asks in a thick British accent.
Stunned by how attractive the girls are, Han forgets about making a good, first impression. He hurriedly hands the drinks over to the girls and proposes a toast.
They're clinking their glasses against each other and take a sip at the same time.
"So, Han, what is your type?" Mikaela asks.
It may seem like a harmless question but it's actually not, she wants him to choose between the two of them. He needs to be careful with what he says if he wants to please them.
"I don't really have a type... but uh... I like eyes, gorgeous eyes," he says.
They nod at you, not quite figuring out what he says by that. He comes up with something to amuse them both, "I like a gorgeous smile too and you both have that."
That works wonderfully as they're smiling and laughing at his answer.
"Cheers to that!" Mikaela says, clinking her glass with his.
"I think the three of us can do something while we wait for the others," Nya suggests an idea.
An idea that gives Han a glimpse of what her personality is. Don't get him wrong, he likes girls who know how to have fun, he just doesn't expect it coming from Nya.
"Yeah? What do you have in mind?" Han playfully dares her.
Nya sips her drink to avoid answering his question then breaks into a series of giggles.
Sadly, the threesome must end as the second male guest enters the villa.
Han would be lying if he said he was not the slightest bit intimidated. Not only he doesn't have his height, but he also doesn't have that Greek God-like body and facial hair that enhances his masculinity.
"How are you doing, man?" He asks Han who's gobsmacked by how tall he is as he stands next to him.
"Good, good," he answers, exchanging a quick hug with him.
He can see honey dripping from Nya's eyes as she looks at the new guy, "What is your name?"
"Rio," he answers.
"Where are you from, Rio?" Mikaela asks, holding her glass close to her lips.
"I'm from Brazil," he answers, taking a drink for himself.
Mikaela giggles even though there's nothing funny about what he says. She fixes her hair as she says, "Rio, you are so gorgeous."
It feels like Han has become invisible to everyone. He quietly sips his drink and tries not to despair. There are more to come and who knows? He'll find someone more suitable to him, more of his type.
Han has to be patient as two more male guests enter the villa, successfully making his confidence shrink.
He bursts into laughter as he's standing between Peyton and Finn like two gorgeous, white pillars of a Greek temple.
And as if that's not enough, the female guest who just entered is also tall.
"Fuck. I'm so small, it's a joke," he says, trying to lighten up his mood by making a fool out of himself.
The boys around him laugh at his joke and almost miss out on the new girl's introduction.
"I'm Sawyer," she says with a cute smile.
"So, Sawyer, what is your type?" Nya asks, going straight to the point.
Han stands up straight and funnily, the other guys are lining up so Sawyer can take a good look at them. He stands on his tiptoes to match the other's heights, earning good laughs from the girls.
"Well, let's say I'm looking more into their personality..." her answer gets cut off as the last male guest enters the scene.
He looks like a textbook bad boy with long, brown hair and tattoos on his body, he has that smoldering eyes that certainly does thing to the girls as he takes all of their attention away.
Confidently, he walks around introducing himself to the girls, kissing them on the cheeks, and keeps his introduction short by only telling his name, "Asher."
So far, no one has caught his eyes or struck his fancy, he doesn't find the sparks he usually gets when he sees someone he likes.
He can only hold onto the hope that he'll find what he's looking for on the last two female guests.
On the other hand, he can't help but expect disappointment and...
"Oh, they're too fit!" Sawyer cutely gasps.
Han glances up from his drink to see what she's fussing about and the boys are howling in reaction to girls walking into the villa.
-
HAN: Oh, we're so spoiled for choice [laughs]
-
It's kind of unfair that they make you enter the villa with someone as gorgeous as Avery.
Except for the dark brown, she looks like the Malibu Barbie. She has perfect skin, that hourglass body figure, and a nice smile. Meanwhile, you look like a long-forgotten, doodled-on Barbie with tattoos scattered across your body.
"Are you nervous?" She asks with an Australian accent.
She looks so cute as she nervously giggles, "Not really," you answer.
It's everyone there who should be nervous because they haven't seen her. You're not jealous, if anything, you want to date her for yourself.
"Should we hold hands?" She offers her hand to you.
You look around at the staff preparing your entrance to the villa, "I'm not sure..."
Your words are trailing off as the staff gives the cute for both of you to start walking into the villa.
To your surprise, you don't feel nervous at all. You feel excited to meet a lot more attractive people and can't wait to know them.
You turn your head and see Avery, looking not as nervous as she seemed to be earlier.
She looks gorgeous with the sun hits her eyes, showing off her beautiful green eyes with a tint of brown in the middle.
It's kind of expected that she's catching all the attention and the boys seem to be curious about Avery that they just can't take their eyes off of her.
"I'm Avery, hi," she introduces herself.
She makes eyes with everyone and Han returns the eye contact with a wide smile on his face.
"Do you fancy anyone, Avery?" Nya asks, being the one that leads the conversation again.
Avery looks at the boys with a smile dancing on her face, Sligh nodding when her eyes hover between Han and Asher.
"Yeah..." she answers then looks away to sip her drink.
"And how about you?" Nya asks.
Everyone turns their attention to you as you quietly grab a drink for yourself. You hold your drink in your hand as you answer, "Honestly, I fancy everyone here."
You look at Nya and continue talking, "I go both ways so bring 'em all in, I guess?" you say with a sly smirk.
Nya seems amused by your answer, "I like that, girl!" She says, clinking her glass with you after.
"Please, save some for us," Rio playfully says.
You nonchalantly shrug and say, "I don't mind sharing."
You secretly steal a few glances at the guy who's been eyeing Avery the second she came into the villa. He looks so cute and cute guys are your weaknesses.
-
YOU: Hi, nice to meet you. I'm— [holds up hand] that sounds so lame, let me do it again! [Laughs] Hey, what's up? It's your girl [blows kisses] I like to keep a low profile. When I see someone I like, I just give them the eyes and they'll get it [Winks] I have standards, of course. But at the end of the day, I have the worst criteria [laughs]
-
The girls are cheering in excitement as they're the first to enter the bedroom.
There are five beds and ten people in here which means everyone has to pair up. The options are still wide open even though he sees Avery sitting on the bed with Asher.
He's half-heartedly listening to the conversation happening in the room as everyone is asking each other about their profession.
He sits on the bed to engage in the conversation as Peyton just told everyone that he works as a model which explains his perfect figure.
"What about you?" Peyton turns to Avery.
She tips her head to the side and it's so adorable of her "Why don't you guess?"
"I think you model too," Finn guesses.
She surprisingly shakes her head, "No, I'm a singer," she says.
Han finds the opportunity to inject himself into the conversation.
"Oh, me too!" He says with such enthusiasm.
"Yeah?" Avery asks.
Han eagerly nods, especially now he has her attention, "What's your sign?"
"I'm a Pisces," she answers.
It's obvious that he can't match his star sign with hers but he won't let it get in his way, "My moon is in Pisces!" He says with a gasp.
"We have a lot of commons," he says, holding both his hands up for a double high-five with her.
"I think we should kiss," Han shamelessly adds.
Avery bursts into laughter hearing Han's proposition but to his surprise, she says, "Just a peck then."
She gets up from the bed and meets Han in the middle, their lips meet for a mere second until Avery breaks the kiss. There are various reactions from everyone but Han notices a few jealous eyes in a few of them. His way of flirting may seem random and a bit silly but hey, it works!
-
HAN: I'm feeling two or three of them but Avery... [whistles] Great body, great smile.
-
It seems like Han is not the only one who has the hots for Avery.
As he chats with Rio with his legs dipped in the swimming pool, he sees that Asher pulls her aside, talking on the wooden chair that overlooks the sea.
He turns at Rio and playfully asks, "What do you think he's saying?"
Rio lets out a chuckle and shrugs, "He's probably saying 'you're the most beautiful girl' and stuff like that," he replies.
Han chuckles at that as he keeps watching the two of them talking. He must admit that Asher wins on visual but it's not a guarantee that he'll be able to win her over with just his look.
Also, he already bagged a peck from Avery.
"How about you? Mikaela, huh?" Han says, guessing that Rio has his eyes on the beautiful, dark-haired girl.
Rio leans with his hands propped behind him and softly laughs, "She's got a banging, banging body," he says the word twice to emphasize how hot she is.
"I think I'll give it a shot, you know, and see what she's saying," Rio concludes.
Well, if he were Rio, he wouldn't worry about not getting a girl. He could only wish to have his sculpted body and he is indeed envious of him for it.
"Finn is going for Avery too," Rio informs.
"Yeah?" He asks with a painful laugh.
Rio laughs while brushing his dark curls to the back, "All I can say to you is best of luck," he says with a sly smile.
Well, the fact that he has competitions only means that Avery is that girl.
-
HAN: There's a competition going on for Avery [laughs] Well, I say let the games begin [rubs hands together]
-
This show is called Party in Paradise for a reason.
Everyone is so revved up and ready for the first party in the villa. The boys are already gathered at the beach, taking a glass of cocktail and making a toast.
"I saw my boy Peyton made his move earlier with Nya," Asher says.
"What?" Han asks in disbelief, completely clueless about it.
Peyton sips his drink with a bragging smirk plastered on his face, "It was nice, it was nice," he coyly responds to that.
"Are you trying to one me up or what?" Han jokes.
He swallows his drink before replying, "Something is going to happen tonight," he cryptically says.
Everyone raises their glasses in the air for another toast and Han wants to keep his focus sharp so he's only taking little sips of it.
Not long after, the girls are coming and dressed stunningly, carefully walking down the steps that lead to the beach. All of them look beautiful in their own way but Avery is exceptionally gorgeous to him.
-
HAN: I need to make a move on Avery. I need to make a progress.
-
The first round of drinks has been drained and everyone moved on to the next round right away. Music is blasting, sending everyone to start moving their bodies to the upbeat music.
Everyone is having fun and getting to know each other with every sip of drink, dancing with each other, not caring that the cameras are filming everything.
You've been instructed to take the lead on the first quest since everyone will take their turn anyway, you've been briefed on everything about the first quest.
When the music abruptly stops, you take it as your cue to take control of the show.
"You guys, I've been tasked to lead the first quest and..." you look at them to build anticipation.
"Don't worry, it's a fun quest!" You assure them, allowing them to stay loosen up.
You grab an eye mask that has been prepared by the staff and show it to everyone, "Each one of you will take turns to stand here," you pointed to the marked spot with a foam mat.
"And you'll put this on," you show them the eye mask again.
You take a few seconds of pause before letting them know the most fun part of it, "And any of you can come to kiss, lick, taste, bite, anything..."
You look at them and emphasize the word again, "Anything!"
Everyone is cheering in reaction, given the chance to do whatever they want to the person they fancy. You can expect a lot of lips locking and fondling in a few minutes.
"Don't get excited yet!" You put a halt to the pheromones you're spreading through your words.
You slyly smile, enjoying the little piece of authority you have over the show.
"The quest is, you have to guess who does what to you and whoever with the most correct answers," you turn around to show them the mysterious box behind you.
You step aside so everyone can look, "You'll get to open the mystery box!"
That earns a wave of applause from them, gets them wondering what's inside the box, and is determined to win the quest.
"Sadly, I don't know what's inside the box," you hurriedly tell them before they get suspicious that you know more than them.
You look around to spot any exciting person to kickstart the game. You notice that Mikaela seems eager to get something out of Rio.
"Mikaela, will you do the honor to be the first?"
She smiles brightly and confidently steps forward, squealing in excitement. You help put the eye mask on without ruining her styled hair and take a step back.
"You ready?" You ask her.
She wriggles her body, "I'm ready!"
Don't want to waste the chance, you steal a quick peck on her lips and earn a surprise gasp from some people.
"That's you!" Mikaela easily guesses.
You walk back to your seat while laughing and see that Rio is also taking his turn after you.
-
YOU: I got my make-up on, I did my hair and I'm... going to get a kiss from everyone [laughs]
-
Peyton stirs a little chaos as he kisses Sawyer and it's not hard to see a displease look on Nya's face after, probably for the rest of the night too.
The time finally comes to Avery's turn. She carefully covers her eyes with the eye mask and with a smile, she makes gestures with her hands.
"Come and get it," she says, swinging her hips side to side.
Han wastes not another second to sprint to her and lands the first kiss on her lips. He gives everything he has to offer, kissing her with the skill he honed from years of experience and putting all of himself into this one kiss.
A kiss that he hoped would be enough to enchant her and put her under his spell.
Han slowly pulls away as his lungs burn from the lack of oxygen, gasping as he looks at Avery's face.
"We share another common thing," he says.
"Huh? What?" Avery asks, still disoriented from the kiss.
"We're both great kissers," he answers.
Avery covers her mouth as she breaks into laughter and as soon as Han leaves his spot, Finn takes his turn to kiss her and he has to watch it.
"Oh, this is mad!" Rio comments while elbowing his sides next to him.
And right after that, Asher takes the next turn and kisses Avery, getting mixed reactions from everyone. That's probably because she gets the most kisses so far.
Avery takes off her eye mask and wipes her lips, trying to clean her smudged lipstick.
"Can you guess, Avery baby?" Nya asks.
She looks in his direction to get any clues on the person who kissed her.
"The first kiss is you," she easily guesses, using both hands to point at him.
Han is inexplicably proud of her for guessing right, he believes the peck helped her to identify his kiss.
"The second one is... uhm..." she bites her finger as she thinks.
She then scrunches her nose and doing it so adorably, "I think it's Finn?"
"And the last one?" You ask.
"That's Asher," she shortly answers, not having the slightest doubt in it.
Han looks at Asher who is nodding along, feeling cocky that Avery recognized his kiss. It seems like the competition has started for real.
-
HAN: The competition is... real mad! [laughs]
-
It's his turn now.
Han drains his drink that he's been sipping little by little and he needs every drop of courage to ready himself for it. When he looks at the other boys, they seem to have it easy because they're undeniably attractive and he feels slightly scared that the other will treat him differently because he's less attractive than the other.
Well, he should mainly focus on the keyword: attractive.
Han is attractive nonetheless.
The layer of anxiety is safely hidden behind his playful smirk as he takes his stand and covers his eyes with the eye mask. He licks his lips and slyly smiles as he says, "Come on! Daddy's home!"
Even though the possibility is close to zero percent, he badly wishes that he could get a kiss from Avery. He laughs as he remembers that he shouldn't take this too seriously, he's here to have fun, it's Party in Paradise.
He can hear the girls giggling and the boys cooing, he takes that as a sign that someone is approaching him. He swallows air as his heart is pitter-pattering and his chest filled with anticipation.
He's seen the other boys take their turn and everyone at least gets a smooch so he stands there expecting one as well.
Instead of that, he feels a kiss on his neck. He shouldn't feel disappointed but he can't help it. He focuses on trying to guess who it is.
Before getting his answer, he hears everyone cooing again and a few light claps.
He anticipates it and this time he believes that he'll get a kiss on the lips.
He indeed gets a kiss but not from one. He feels two pairs of lips kissing him at once and he doesn't mind it at all. It surprises him that he can only let them kiss him.
It's incredibly soft and warm, a little wet. He feels a few licks in here and there.
Too bad that he can't see it but it makes him visualize it in his head, him making out with these two girls, and fuck, it's so hot it gets him so horny.
He doesn't want to guess anymore, he keeps wanting to kiss them because they're both good at it, they know how to use their tongues, and makes him feel a bit lightheaded.
Someone pulls away first and he can hear her softly gasping while the other is still kissing him, taking a bit of his lower lip before letting it go.
Han hears another series of giggles but the sounds are fading, the girls are probably walking back to their seats. He takes a minute to compose himself, then takes off his eye mask.
The first thing he does to get his vision back is look at girls to scan any guilty faces. He can easily guess the one who kisses his neck.
"The one who kissed my neck is..." he points his finger at Sawyer and she reacts with blushed cheeks and a shy laugh, which proves that he's right.
This is where it gets tricky, he was enjoying every bit of that sexy makeout to try to guess who are they. He looks at the girls and they're giving him vague signs.
Sawyer is out of options and he knows Mikaela has no interest in him. That leaves you, Nya, and Avery.
As much as he wants to believe that it's Avery, he doesn't want to make it obvious to her. So he settles on you and Nya.
"Nah, you're wrong," Nya tells him.
His eyes widen in shock and he doesn't want to get over his head but is it possible that one of them is Avery?
He walks back to his seat with a dreading curiosity, "Who was it?"
Rio playfully punches his arm, "It's those girls!"
His eyes follow the direction of Rio's hand and he's even more surprised to know that he's right.
It's you and Avery.
-
HAN: I don't know what else to say [shrugs] I made out with the two hottest girls in the villa [smirks]
-
Not trying to compete with the other three boys but you're sure that the last person that kissed you is Avery.
"I know it's you," you point at her.
Avery may look like an angel, she walks and talks like an angel but she has the devil inside of her. You know that she's just like you, she's all about the vibe and having fun. You believe you would be good friends with her.
"I would be sad if you guessed it wrong," she says.
"I know," you coyly answer.
The game ends with you and it's time to announce the winner of the quest. It's an easy call because the one with the most correct guesses is none other than Avery.
"Come up here!" You order.
She gets up from her chair and walks up to you, leading her to the mystery box as she's the winner which earned her the chance to be the one opening it.
"I've been told that the content of this box will truly change this trip into an experience you won't forget," you inform everyone.
Avery gives you a nervous look as she grips the handle on the lid of the box.
"Are guys ready?" You ask everyone to keep the tension.
"Yeah!" They answer in unison.
You look at Avery and nod, "There's no turning back once you open it!"
You jokingly say that to scare her before walking back to your seat and joining everyone else as anticipation mounts in each passing second.
Avery looks at everyone and squints her eyes, "Count with me, please!"
Everyone agrees to start counting down together, "3..."
Avery decides to stand behind the box and holds the handle of the box again.
"2..."
You wonder what's inside the box, it looks small from where you're sitting but you have seen it up close, it could fit anything and it could be anything inside.
"1..."
Avery closes her eyes as she lifts the lid and the box unfolds on every side, exposing the content to everyone's watching.
You don't want to believe what you're seeing but then it chimes.
"Oh... fuck!" You curse out loud and you're not the only one doing so.
-
YOU: Are you joking?
-
"What is it?" Avery asks as she hasn't opened her eyes yet.
She then puts the lid away and sees what everyone is seeing, the cone that lights up in purple-hued colors.
"What is that?" She cluelessly asks.
"That's Lana!" Nya screams with a strained voice.
"That's fucking Lana!" She says again with a doomed expression.
Avery's eyes widen in horror and she drags herself back to sit, wedging herself between you and Mikaela.
You guess everyone is just in shock about the sudden turn of events and that everyone is trapped in her show. You hate that you know what's coming for you.
"This is Too Hot To Handle," Lana announces, telling everyone that she is running this show from the very beginning.
"You have been specially selected because you are all choosing meaningless sex over genuine relationships."
"Guilty!" Asher says with a hand raised like he's in a classroom.
"The purpose of this retreat is to help you gain deeper emotional connections in your personal relationships."
Avery drops her head on your shoulder and grumbles, "I don't want that, Lana."
You put your hand around her, feeling what she's feeling: betrayal and devastation.
"As always, there are conditions to your stay here. You must abstain from sexual practices for the entirety of your stay."
You close your eyes and try to take the first bitter pill, swallowing it dry, and pushing it as far down as you can.
"Are you jok—" Mikaela can't even finish her sentence.
"No kissing."
"What?" Avery gasps in disbelief.
"No heavy petting."
Mikaela sighs, running her hand to her hair and ruining her hairstyle altogether.
"And no sex of any kind."
That earns a lot of gasp from everyone and there goes down the biggest, most bitter pill you have to take.
"This also applies to self-gratification."
Mikaela sighs again while Nya squeals in both pain and amusement.
"What does it mean?" Sawyer innocently asks.
"You can't masturbate, babe," Avery answers her question with a pout.
"At all?" She asks again to confirm her fear.
So they threw a bunch of hot people into a villa and tricked them into thinking that they would be partying and having fun only to reveal that they're not allowed to have any physical contact? What in the 21st century way of torture is this?
-
YOU: There goes my plan to kiss everyone... I was planning to get a taste here and there and now it's like... No [sighs]
-
"As part of your social development, I have allocated a prize of $200,000."
Everyone's eyes turn green at the mention of money and the amount of it, also at the promise that they can win it.
"I'm a college student. I need that!" Finn comments from the end of the bench.
"Each time the rules are broken, money will be deducted from the prize fund."
Of course, it wouldn't be that easy to win that much money and now it looks like everyone would be leaving with nothing.
But with the rules are set and the prize is announced, the game gets serious now.
"Welcome to your long, hard, sexless summer," Lana finishes with the gloom casting on those words.
"Everyone gets ready now 'cause it's not Party in Paradise anymore," Nya reminds everyone with the harsh truth.
"It's hell now," Mikaela eggs in.
Han personally thinks this is worse than hell. Because at least in hell, he'd be allowed to get horny.
-
HAN: $200,000... That's a lot of money... to spend [smirks]
-
"Please, can we not?"
The last thing you want to hear is everyone complaining about the rules again and it's only dragging you down more than you allowed it to.
"I'm just upset..." Mikaela says as she takes off her earrings and puts them into a jewelry box.
"I know," you sigh, tossing your shoes into the bottom shelf of your closet.
It takes you a long time to get ready for bed but it's most likely because the girls are chatting and you can't help but join in. Trying to keep yourself away from sex is hard but being able to talk about it is what makes it bearable.
You and Avery walk to the bedroom with arms linked, you just know you'll be friends by how you identify a few traits of yours in her.
The boys are already taking their territory except for Finn, you know he's still in the dresser room. You're fine sharing a bed with anyone but you try not to make drama by getting on a bed with someone's person of interest.
Since Avery is the hot commodity, you make her choose where she'll sleep tonight.
"So, Avery, what's the bed situation?" You ask her.
A few pairs of ears perk up hearing the question and you notice that the three men competing are watching as Avery is making a decision.
She walks up to the bed in the middle, "I'll sleep here."
Asher triumphantly smiles as Avery climbs onto his bed and gets under the cover next to him.
Now that she has settled on a man, you can choose your bed partner at ease. Rio is off-limits unless you want to face Mikaela's wrath and Peyton is also out of the question, you don't want to mess with Nya.
You walk over to Han's bed and you kind of like the vibe he's giving you, you know he's into Avery but it's not like he has much of options, it's either you and Sawyer.
"Want to share a bed?" You ask.
Han glances at you and without answering, makes a space on the bed for you. He seems to take an interest in the tattoos inked your body and he notices that you're watching.
"How many tattoos do you have?" He asks.
You lean against the pillow stacked behind you, "Uhm... I never counted," you reply.
It's amusing to see the wonder in his eyes as he's looking at your tattoos, making you feel like teasing him.
"How about I get naked and you can count my tattoos for me?"
He blinks his eyes at you, "I can promise you I'll do well at that," he says.
You chuckle at his witty answer and outstretched your arms to showcase the small tattoos on both of your arms.
He turns on the bed to lay on his side facing you, "Which one is your favorite?"
You take a few seconds to think of an answer, "I think it's the one on my spine."
You take all of your hair to one shoulder before turning your back at him, to show him the tattoo you're talking about.
His finger pulls down the silk camisole you're wearing so he can take a better look at it.
"Yeah, that's nice," he agrees with you.
You lean back on your pillow again and look at him, "How about you? Do you have any favorite yet?" You playfully ask.
He slyly smiles even before he begins talking, "Well, I believe there are tattoos that I have not yet seen," he says with one eyebrow slightly raised higher than the other.
Han knows how to amuse you, he's attractive in a different way than the other guys. It makes you want to tease him more.
"You mean like this one?" You lift the front of your camisole to show him the tattoo you have under your left breast.
He almost chokes on air as he breaks into laughter, "That could be my favorite," he says.
You nod and laugh along with him, "I'll show you more but I'm afraid we have to wait for third base," you jokingly say.
That amuses him so much, he collapses on his side of the bed and covers his eyes as he laughs. He has that laugh that only enhances the hilarity and you can't help to laugh along.
-
YOU: Han is cute, yeah, I think we'll get on well.
-
The lights are on and Han would still be sleeping if you didn't shift on the bed to take your water tumbler from the bedside table.
As everyone is slowly getting up and dragging themselves out of slumber, Lana's chime startles everyone.
"Oh, it wasn't a dream," Nya groans from the next bed to his.
Yeah, right, Han forgot about the sex ban until that cone lights up on top of the small glass table in the middle of the room.
"Good morning, everyone!" Lana greets.
Han props a pillow behind his head and you take his arm out so you can rest your head on it.
"Morning, hon!" You sleepily reply.
"I'd like to remind you that you're in a retreat but I do hope you enjoy your summer of sun, sea, and no sex," Lana concludes her morning greeting, leaving everyone with the awakening truth that they're not allowed to touch each other.
Han looks over to Avery's bed and wonders how is he going to make a move on her with Lana cockblocking him?
"Right. I'm going back to sleep," you grumble, closing your eyes and nuzzling your head in his neck.
Han slips his hand in your hair, playing with it as he's listening to the talk happening in the room.
"Is anyone still pissed off?" Nya asks everyone how they feel.
Peyton is the first one to raise his hand and Mikaela adds her opinion on the matter, "I think it's impossible to connect with someone without touching them, don't you think?"
Han is too busy thinking of his game plan now that the competition is getting tough and Asher is a point ahead of him.
"I think we need to tell each other if someone is—" Sawyer's words got cut off by Asher.
"At the end of the day, just don't lie," Asher remarks.
Han turns his head to the side only to bury his nose in your hair, catching the scent of your shampoo.
"Your hair smells so good," he says to you.
You hum with your eyes still closed and splayed your hand on his chest, "And you have nice pecs."
You both softly laugh at the compliments you give each other.
Last night, you both fell asleep after having a chat about random things, getting to know each other with jokes slipped in between.
Han must say that he likes you, you're fun to be around and you don't take things seriously. But then again, his eyes are on Avery.
-
HAN: I woke up next to her and it was great, I like her but... I like Avery more.
-
After taking a quick dip in the beach, you're walking past the boys who are working out on the way back to the villa.
"Looking good wet," Asher teases you with a lopsided grin on his face.
Too bad you're immune to sweet nothings like that, you flash him a smile and keep climbing the stairs back to the villa.
The other girls are already done with their make-up and leaving the dressing room empty, allowing you to get ready in peace.
In the middle of doing your hair, Nya enters the room and takes a seat next to you.
"What's up, hottie?" You ask while looking in the mirror to make sure you don't burn your scalp with the straightening iron.
Nya grabs her make-up pouch from the other side of the vanity table and takes out a brush. She seems to have something to say to you but hesitates to tell you.
After a while, she finally confesses, "Peyton and I, we kissed last night."
You're more shocked by the fact that she shares this with you rather than the kiss itself. They're horny for each other, it's only about time that they rule break.
You softly chuckle and gently comb your hair with your fingers, "How many times?"
"Just once," she answers while applying makeup on her cheeks.
"I'm impressed!" You playfully respond.
Nya chuckles at that and swivels her chair to face you, "What do you think? Is it three grand? For a kiss?" She asks with a nervous smile.
You put down the straightening iron and lean back on your chair, "I think so, yeah."
Nya takes lipstick out of her pouch next, "I didn't give a fuck at that moment," she says.
From your observation, Nya indeed doesn't give a fuck about the rules. She broke them hours after Lana put on the sex ban and you believe she wouldn't stop there.
"You saw how he kissed me last night during the game and I was a bit horny that we're sharing the bed..." she stops talking as she breaks into breathless chuckles.
"So, Peyton, huh?"
"Well, yeah, once I set my eyes on someone, I will get them," Nya remarks, affirming her strong personality.
"Sorry not sorry, Sawyer," she adds and couldn't care less about anyone else.
Which reminds you to never get on her bad side. You continue styling your hair while keeping the conversation going.
"Yeah, I think you guys are so cute," you comment even though you're not sure that Peyton will make a loyal partner considering that he kissed another girl right in front of her.
"What about you? How are you feeling?" She asks.
This is a dating show and you're well aware that you should get a partner to make this work but no one really tugs at your heartstrings.
Well, there is Han but he's certainly not available to you.
"I came to meet people and have fun, that's what I'm here for," you settle on a simple answer because you have no idea what you can do without a partner in this show.
"Yeah, yeah," Nya half-heartedly responds, "but who are you feeling?"
You must take another pause on doing your hair, "I like Han, he's cute. I like cute guys," you honestly answer.
Nya smiles listening to you talking, "He is. He is cute."
"But I think he's into Avery," you add, not letting her encourage you to pursue him.
Nya nods, getting the gist of it since it's obvious that Avery is the most popular girl in the retreat. She swipes her full lips with nude-colored lipstick and smacks her lips together.
"Once they know about the kiss, we're going to get hated," Nya once again worries about what would happen when Lana announces the infraction they've done last night.
"I think you should just... own up to it," you suggest.
Honest is the best policy and also, you think people will be less upset if they admit their mistake right away.
-
YOU: Knowing that someone already broke the rules. It's only about time that someone else starts doing it too.
-
Han has just come out of the shower when Lana calls everyone to the cabana.
He combs his wet hair fast and walks with Finn to where everyone has gathered, sitting on the curved sofa facing the cone-shaped lady.
He squeezes himself between you and Sawyer, putting his arm on the headrest of the sofa as he waits for Lana to come online.
You look over your shoulder at him, "You smell nice."
"I showered," he simply answers with a sly grin on his face.
"That changes everything," you joke, then rest your head on his shoulder,
The cone lights up followed by the melodic chime that he should get used to hearing it. There must be a reason why everyone is called to the cabana, someone must have done something.
"Hello, everyone!" Lana begins.
"Hey, Lana," he replies, suddenly feeling nervous even though he hasn't done anything yet.
"The rules of my retreat have already been broken."
Everyone collectively gasps at that announcement and this is where they get suspicious of each other.
"Oh, no..." Sawyer sighs.
Finn sits on the edge of the sofa and clasps his hands together in front of him, "Anybody wants to come clean?" He asks.
Han gets the feeling that Finn would play the good cop here and he also senses that you know something, "Did we kiss in our sleep or what?"
"If that's the case, I wouldn't stop at kissing," you joke back at him with a gentle slap on his forearm.
Unexpectedly, what you said makes him flutter inside, he almost forgot that someone broke the rules and possibly, it involves Avery.
"I'm so confused," Sawyer says as if it's a math problem that she needs to solve.
No one wants to come forward and it creates animosity in the air. He doesn't like what this leads to, he hopes that someone comes forward so things won't get ugly.
"Who's guilty?" He throws the question in with his eyes uneasily glancing in Avery's direction.
"I thought we were going to be truthful with each other," Finn reminds everyone about the unwritten rules they made this morning.
The calm on Nya's face shatters as Rio says, "You're looking real guilty right now, Nya."
"Yeah, okay, it was me," she finally confesses.
Nya tips her head to the side then looks at Peyton, "Peyton and I kissed."
Han glares at Peyton, he expects that at least he would man up and own up to it. But Han feels a relief knowing that it wasn't Avery.
"This breach of rules has cost the group $3,000," Lana announces.
Oh? Three thousand dollars? For a kiss? That's a surprise but still, he would spend that much for a kiss with Avery.
"The prize fund now stands at $197,000," Lana updates.
"I'm so vexed, you know," Finn says, being the only one who is genuinely upset about losing money.
While the others... the others seem to have waited for someone to break the wave so they can start to rule break too.
And that includes him.
-
HAN: Best believe if anybody is going to rule break next, it's me [cackles]
-
"Hello, I'm Josh and I'm a professional tantric practitioner," the instructor for today's workshop introduces himself.
Your eyebrow raises in intrigue at the mention of the word 'tantric' and how it would help everyone to not think about sex.
"Tantric? What is that?" Sawyer naively asks next to you.
"Just listen to the instructor," you tell her with a pat on her shoulder.
"Usually, when we relate to other people, everything is fast, right?" Josh says.
You nod in agreement while shielding your eyes from the bright sun.
"Someone touches you, you touch them back. You kiss this person, they kiss you back but we don't feel it," he eloquently explains while walking around and making eye contact with everyone.
"That's what this workshop is for. For you to learn how to feel your body," he further explains.
He walks back to the middle and looks at everyone, "Pleasure is not in the other. Pleasure is in yourself."
Then Josh orders everyone to gather in the middle as he explains what we're going to do next. He holds a tray full of blindfolds for everyone.
"Usually, people relate tantra to sexuality. But that's just a really small part. Every aspect of you can benefit from increased awareness," Josh informs.
He then offers the tray to Asher who stands close to him, ordering him to get one.
"So we're going to broaden the awareness of our vision, of our breathing, our sounds, our movements..."
You put the blindfold on and tie it around your head, putting you in total blindness.
"We put the blindfolds on so the experience can just be your experience," he concludes before starting the session.
Josh instructs everyone to move their bodies, walk around, and eventually bump into each other's bodies. You get goosebumps when your body crashes with someone, you can feel their heat and feel them skin-to-skin.
Then Josh orders everyone to take a step back and blindly, get a partner to do the next session.
You catch the person that you inexplicably guess is standing in front of you and holding him.
"Oh, I found one!" You reflexively say.
Your partner chuckles at that and from the laugh, you can tell who it is.
"Got you," you tell him with a grin.
"Okay, now, breathe..." Josh instructed, "Breathe her in. Breathe him in."
You slip your hands under and around his waist while he places his hands on your back, also holding you back.
You lean your head forward and meet his head in the middle, ending up putting our heads together. This way you can feel his breath on you and every subtle sound he makes.
"It's time to reveal who your partner was," Josh finally allows everyone to take their blindfolds off.
You untie it on the back of your head and burst into laughs the moment your eyes meet.
-
YOU: I just can tell who it is the moment we touch [laughs]
-
"These emotional processes happen but they can only be experienced if you're present."
Now that everyone has partnered up, each pair takes a seat on the mat and sits facing each other. As Han puts his legs on each side of you, you decide to put your legs over his.
"You can get back to your connection through the eyes," Josh continues.
You both can't stop laughing at each other and the longer you maintain eye contact with him, the more you can't stop yourself from laughing.
"Don't lose her. Don't lose him."
"I think it would be better if we close our eyes," you suggest, holding his hands in substitute of that and pressing your heads together.
"Tantra is a way of connecting with your essence. With your feelings."
And you focus on doing what Josh told you to do, focusing on your breathing to be able to intensely feel things with your senses.
"Deep breathe, not deep penetration," Han reminds you.
Once again, you fail to keep your composure and break into a wave of laughter.
"Now, lie down. It's time for you to feel your whole body vibration."
You both lie down facing against each other with your legs still around him and he places his hand on your shin, softly rubbing the skin with his thumb.
"One must learn to connect deeply with oneself. That's tantra. A way through which you can truly connect with yourself."
Maybe because you let yourself open to it, you can feel that connection, it's as if your body is one with earth. You can feel the ground beneath, you can hear the waves crashing and the warmth of the afternoon sun on your skin.
"Now you can sit up," Josh orders.
You slowly open your eyes and sit up, meeting Han's eyes again but this time, you smile at him.
"That was good," you mutter to him.
"Right?" He agrees with you.
You rest your head on his shoulder and continue to sit close facing each other, feeling each other's bodies in a whole new way.
Josh finishes the workshop with one last instruction: a group hug.
-
YOU: I think I learned how to get to know myself better and to not hold in what I really feel [smiles]
-
"You all look so sexy!"
You compliment everyone who's getting ready in the dressing room while searching for someone. Avery gleefully smiles at your compliment.
"You look good in those sexy jeans!"
It sounds like she's making fun of it and you look down to check if you look okay in what you're wearing, "Am I underdressed?"
"No. Your butt looks cute in it," Avery assures you with a playful slap on your clothed ass.
To make room for everyone else who hasn't gotten ready yet, you move to the bedroom and find the one you're looking for. Han is sitting on the bed already dressed in blue jeans and a white shirt with the top three buttons left open.
After the workshop, you feel somehow closer to him and you get along really well, you wonder if it could be more.
"Hiya, sexy!" You greet him.
Han glances up and pats the space on the bed, gesturing for you to sit next to him.
"How are you?" He asks.
"Good. You?" You ask back while sitting down and propping a hand against the bed.
"I'm good, thanks," he answers with a smile.
There's no one else in the bedroom and you take it as an opportunity to ask him about something.
"So, where's your head at?" You ask.
Han puts his hand under his head and simply says, "It's right here."
You chuckle and tip your head to the side, "I mean... who do you like in here?"
He takes a moment to take a deep breath and you guess picking his words carefully before answering you, "I think I get on really well with you," he begins.
And it's good to know that he feels the same way about it.
"But I'm more attracted to Avery," he adds, not even hesitating to tell you about it.
Well, it's also good to know that he can openly and comfortably share things with you.
"Yeah," you say, expecting that answer already.
Yet you can't quite hide your disappointment, you look away and pretend to fix your hair. That's just him basically saying that you have a great personality but that's not enough to attract him.
"As you know the three of us are pursuing Avery and we don't know which one she likes..." he says while rubbing his chin.
Instead of being salty about it, you decide to be a friend to him and give him your opinion.
"I think if you like someone, you go for it. There's no time to waste, just go and get it," you encourage while mindlessly running your hand on the bedsheet.
"Yeah," Han's head bobbing in agreement.
"You should talk to Avery and see how she feels about you," you add.
It is obvious that Han likes Avery but he's playing the cool guy trick by thinking that he'll win her over by acting like he doesn't care.
-
YOU: Oh, well... [awkwardly chuckles] I kind of expected that answer.
-
After the workshop, Han realizes that you and he bounce off each other, you're tuned in to the same wave and he agrees that it has the potential to be something more than that.
However, Han feels like he should keep pursuing Avery. Mostly because he's attracted to her, almost magnetic, and the fact that he has competition makes him want her more.
He gets out of the bedroom after knowing that Avery is no longer in the dressing room.
Turns out, Finn is already making his move on her. He sees them talking in the firepit and having a laugh, but he can't hear what they're talking about. Finn shortly leaves after kissing her on the hand.
So he's playing the romantic guy, Han reckons.
Avery once said that he likes bad boys and so he'll be it. Bad boys don't make it obvious that he likes her, they wait until they come around.
So Han decides that should be his game plan, sitting on the sofa and you know, waiting for Avery to come around.
-
HAN: I'm not worried about Asher so my game plan is to play it cool and see where it goes. She'll come to the right man... eventually [laughs]
-
After hours of no significant result, Han walks back inside to get a new place to hang out.
He decides to go to the bedroom, pushing the door with both hands only to walk into Asher and Avery cuddling on the bed.
Now he sees the flaw in his game plan, he slowly walks back out of the room as everything backfired to him.
When it's time for bed, he couldn't be happier.
Han dives into his pillow and takes a deep breath, blowing some steam off.
A moment later, he feels the bed quaking as you get on and playfully, put your body on top of him.
"We're like the twin bar ice cream," He grumbles as your body presses onto him.
His body shakes along with yours as you're laughing on top of him, then rolling yourself to the side and onto the bed next to him.
"How was your night?" You ask, playing with his dark hair.
"Average," he shortly answers.
"I'm asking about your night, not your genital size," you joke.
He chuckles before answering, "Then it's below average."
If there's anyone that makes this retreat bearable to him then it's you. He can share everything with you and what he likes the most about it is that he can seek comfort from you too.
Han scoots closer and puts his hand across your chest which you nicely welcomed. You're caressing his forearm with only your fingertips and it's relaxing him.
When the lights are out, you pull his arm and put it around you as you lie on your side with your back against his chest.
"Goodnight," you murmur.
He hesitates but with his mouth pressed close to you, he decides to kiss you on the top of your head.
"Goodnight," he murmurs back, snuggling his head on the crook of your neck.
-
HAN: I guess nice guys do finish last [laughs]
-
The bathroom is pretty much occupied by the two tall lovebirds, Rio and Mikaela.
You almost walk in on them applying sunblock on each other's bodies and slowly, walking back out of there. Stepping into the dressing room, you find Nya there with Avery who's busy putting her hair into a ponytail.
"Hello, babes," you greet them as you take a seat in your usual spot and decide to put on your sunscreen there when you usually put it on in the bathroom because it can get messy.
Mikaela joins in not long after and sits next to you, fixing her hair with a brush.
"Has anything been going on late at night?" Nya asks her since Mikaela and Rio turned up to their bed late last night.
"We held off pretty well, I guess," Mikaela answers with her half-moaning voice.
"Yeah, but has he been getting hard?" Nya asks again, being nosy as she is.
"We're pretty close," Mikaela answers with a cryptic smile.
You look at her with a dollop of sunscreen on your cheek, "Pretty close? What's that even mean?" You tease.
Before Mikaela can answer that, Lana butts in with her familiar chime, and everyone's heads turn to the cone sitting on the shelf.
"Uh-oh!" You gasp in surprise and awkwardly continue dabbing your cheeks with sunscreen.
"Girls," Lana calls out to everyone in the dressing room.
"Yeah?" Nya replies with a shocked smile.
"Please gather everyone in the bedroom," Lana orders.
You sense that Mikaela did something last night from the horror drawn on her face with her round eyes widening in slight shock.
Nya gets up from her chair but you haven't finished with your sunscreen yet.
"I'll catch up," you tell her.
You put on a sheer top over your bikini before heading to the bedroom and see that everyone is already there including Han.
He holds his hand out for you to take, gesturing for you to sit close to him at the end of your shared bed.
-
YOU: This can't be good news [scrunches nose]
-
Other than Mikaela, you notice another pair of guilty faces. No surprise if Nya broke another rule but also, you kind of guessed that Avery did something too, she keeps shaking her leg uncomfortably.
Lana chimes and the tension is already rising in the room.
"There have been breaches of the rules," Lana goes straight to business.
"Breaches?" Finn focuses on the plural terms that could tell how much money he'll be losing today.
As someone without a partner, you can relax since no one will be suspicious of you. You put your legs over Han's and rest your hand on his shoulder.
Heads are turning against each other but no one is saying anything.
"Mmh..." Avery lets out a low sigh.
You bet she did something and if yes, who did she do it with? You look at Han and wonder if he did what you told him to just go and get her.
"I'll be honest with you guys..." Asher speaks up.
There goes your answer. Avery did kiss but it's with Asher and you don't know why you feel some sort of relief on knowing it.
"I definitely lost some money last night," he pauses to scratch his head, "I pulled Avery aside and kissed her."
Avery shyly smiles and sputters her apology, "I'm–I am sorry, you guys."
Your eyes silently shift at Han and notice that he's not pleased to hear his love interest got kissed by someone else.
"This is what I wanted and I felt a genuine connection there," Asher adds.
What a way to prove that he wants to delve further into this relationship but Avery doesn't seem to be happy to hear his man declare that she is what he wanted.
"So sorry, guys," Asher concludes.
It would be stupid of you to hope that that's the only kiss that happened last night.
"There was another breach of the rules," Lana says again and she won't stop until everyone comes clean.
You look at Nya and she's not looking at anyone. Peyton seems to have decided to keep denying it and staying quiet about it.
Mikaela sighs then closes her eyes, "Why don't you tell them, Rio," she says to the man next to her.
Rio licks his lips and opens his mouth, but words do not come out of it until a minute later.
"We kissed a couple of times last night," Rio confesses and pinches the bridge of his nose after.
"A couple?" Finn asks for confirmation.
You guess what he needs to know is how many kisses in numbers.
"Five times," Rio answers.
"Oh, my gosh!" Avery sighs while rubbing her temple.
That makes you sweat a little and you take your hand off of Han's shoulder to fiddle with the strap of your bikini, also because you sense that Han gets tensed beside you.
"I mean, I can tolerate one or two kisses but five?" You confront them and keep your tone calm to not trigger anyone.
It's not a genuine connection if you needed five kisses to convince you that you're emotionally connected so yeah, you doubt that Rio and Mikaela have it.
"If you had that genuine connection, what would you do?" Rio says in his defense.
"I don't know, maybe try a bit harder?" Han finally lets out an opinion with an insinuating tone, driven by the slight anger he gets from Avery and Asher's kiss.
"That's just a waste of money," Finn mutters from his bed and a deep sigh.
"Is that all, Lana?" You ask, wanting to get it over with.
"There was another breach of the rules," Lana shares.
You don't even hold yourself back from groaning and rolling your eyes. You didn't plan to get this mad but hearing these people kissing and spending money recklessly ticked you off.
"We'll have no money," Finn mutters again and collapses onto the bed.
"Why are you smiling, Peyton?" Asher asks.
Peyton is indeed smiling and looking calm for a guilty man, "I kissed Nya last night."
Sawyer raises her hand like she's in a classroom but that works to get everyone's attention, "Wait, I'm a little confused about it because you said you were going to pursue things with me," she drops a truth bomb out of nowhere.
Nya turns Peyton around to force him to look at her, "You said to me that you wanted me, not her," she spoils more rotten truth.
This whole thing turns into a she said, he said situation and you can only watch them, going back and forth, pointing fingers at each other.
"I hate being lied to," Sawyer mutters.
Peyton rubs his chin and concludes, "I never lied to you," he says to Sawyer.
Then he turns to Nya and tells her the same thing, "And I never lied to you."
Can't help it, you let out a stifled laugh because Peyton not only digging his own grave but also putting nails on his coffin.
The ones that benefited from this are Rio and Mikaela, the love triangle mess is taking the heat off of them.
"It's obviously not working," Nya ends things for good.
Thankfully, Lana takes control of the situation to deliver the bills.
"All of these rule breaks have made me decide to implement a stricter regime. The fines will now be doubled starting with these rule breaks."
Your jaw drops at the announcement and get dizzy thinking of how much those five kisses cost alone.
"These multiple rule breaks have cost the group $42,000," Lana updates.
You scoff at the amount of money spent on a few silly kisses and have to take a few deep breaths to calm yourself.
"The prize fund now stands at $155,000."
Everyone is just as gobsmacked by how much money has been lost from the prize and if everyone keeps doing it, all of you would likely go home with nothing.
-
YOU: We might as well pack our things now and go home [shrugs]
-
A week has passed and you start to feel that you're merely wasting time here.
Not much happened around here especially after Peyton and Nya's ship sank right after that messy fight. In the end, Peyton doesn't get either Nya or Sawyer and he deserves every bit of it.
The retreat is not only about couple growth but still... If only you had someone to try to make a connection with, you would enjoy this whole experience more.
You wake up in the morning, have a few cuddles with Han, and then everyone is moving on with their day. There's not much you can do here but you try to participate as much by not breaking the rules.
As if you have someone to do it with.
Avery joins you as you walk down to the beach to swim at the beach. With the low tide, you can sit on the beach with her to cool down after swimming.
"Avery baby, tell me, how are things with Asher?" You ask out of curiosity.
What Asher did that day, defending her and openly telling everyone how he feels about her, you expect her to be swooned if not smitten.
But from what you've been seeing, it seems like things have cooled down between them.
"To be honest, I don't know..." she is just as confused as you.
"But out of all the three boys, you like him right?" You try to make it simple for her.
"Yeah, I like Asher because he's great, he made the first move and got an edge to him..." she explains.
You nod and support your chin with the back of your hand, "What he did that day, I think that's very endearing of him," you give her your honest opinion just in case she needs an assurance from someone outside that relationship.
"Yeah, he was like... expressed his feelings and telling everyone how he feels about me," Her facial expression gradually turns sour as you sense a 'but' coming from her small mouth.
"But I just don't like when people are like that to me," she says with a repulsed expression.
"I get really..." she ends the sentence with a groan.
The problem with Avery is that she doesn't know what she wants. Other than that, now you know why Asher flirted with you this morning but knowing that he initially likes Avery makes you feel like you're his backup plan.
Here's the thing about you, you don't like being a second choice.
-
YOU: You know what, Lana? I think we need more dicks in the villa [laughs]
-
Han feels like his breakfast is about to come up as he hears the sound of that melodic chime. He hears it often enough yet he feels even more anxious the more he hears it.
"Please be good news," Han mutters next to you.
You put your hand on his thigh, playing with a lint of his swimming trunk.
"Hello, everyone!" Lana greets.
He turns his head at the same time you look at him, sending both of you burst into laughter.
"Here we go," Asher mutters with a nervous sigh.
"To further aid your personal growth, you must learn to resist your urges."
That catches his interest but also makes his heart start to beat faster. Lana is unpredictable and Han hates that.
"I have arranged two dates."
That makes some people relax, at least, it's not about losing more money from the prize fund. Han, personally, has not yet recovered from losing a quarter of the prize money.
"Both with new arrivals," Lana finishes her sentence.
Other than Rio and Mikaela, everyone else seems to be excited about this. New guests mean new chances to make a connection.
"I have allowed the new arrivals to select who they want to ask out on their date."
Han is having mixed feelings about this. He knows that Avery is no longer with Asher but he's slowly losing his interest in her. Maybe the new arrivals can help him move on.
"The first new arrival is... Gwen."
So it's a girl, well, Han can do something about this Gwen. He feels hopeful once again and maybe this time, triumph will be his.
"Gwen has chosen... Rio to be her date."
All eyes are on Mikaela as she tries so hard to remain calm about this but everyone knows that she's fuming inside.
"You seem happy, Rio," Asher teases him which Rio coyly responds with a shrug.
"And date number two will be with Fabian."
His head turns as he hears hears you cooing in wonder, "He sounds exotic," you mutter.
Nya is the most excited one and it's probably because she needs to show Peyton that he's got nothing on her anymore.
"Fabian has chosen... Nya to be his date."
Han doesn't know why he feels glad knowing that this new guy didn't choose you but does that make him the bad guy? He doesn't think so.
"Rio and Nya, you may leave to get ready for the date," Lana orders.
He hasn't seen the new arrivals yet but he can imagine the amount of drama he'll witness later with Rio going on a date with the new girl.
-
HAN: The new arrivals, uh... they can't be ugly, right Lana? [Snickers]
-
The first one to return from the date is Nya and she's bringing a man who's taller than Rio and talks in a French accent.
Han can see that Nya is already all over him and he glances at Peyton who ends up with no one but his own player ass. He just knew that Peyton had it coming for him since that game night when he boldly kissed two girls.
He grabs his first drink of the day with the staff only allowed every contest to take three drinks max and when he gets back to the terrace, he sees a gorgeous girl with blond hair.
Rio is introducing the girl around while Mikaela is intensely watching him from the cabana with furrowed brows and eyes filled with fiery glints like a hawk.
When it comes to his turn, he doesn't bother making a good first impression.
"Han," he simply tells her his name.
"I'm Gwen, hi," she introduces herself.
With the few inches he doesn't have, Gwen can easily put her arm around him for a quick hug, "Nice to meet you!"
Gwen is undeniably beautiful, anyone who looks at her would agree with him. Surprisingly, he's not as excited as he imagined he would be.
Well, the last thing he wants to do is compete to win a girl over and he doesn't want to entertain the idea that Gwen would take a liking to him.
Despite all that, Rio and Mikaela remain strong. Everyone is staying on the same bed and because Nya and Sawyer refuse to sleep with Peyton, he has to share the bed with Finn.
Han feels good knowing that he doesn't have to deal with such drama, he walks to his bed and does not hesitate to cuddle you.
"Hi, sexy bunny," he mutters close to your ear.
The two of you have this inside joke of calling each other silly, childish pet names and yesterday, you called him
'tater tot' and he laughs whenever he recalls it.
"Hi, bubble butt," you reply.
He laughs at that and playfully bites at your shoulder to get back at you. Somehow, the only one he can comfortably share his space with is you and he realizes how grateful he should be for your presence.
"Goodnight, everyone," Avery says while blowing kisses to everyone.
Han tickles your neck with his nose and purposely, breathes into your ear, "Goodnight!"
You giggle in reaction to his tickling breath, "Night!"
He presses a soft, lingering kiss on your head and that's how he ends his day on a sweet note.
-
HAN: I wasn't attracted to her but now I feel bad for not giving her any attention.
-
"It's like working out with Zeus, bro!" Han says, watching Rio working out non-stop while he's sitting on the mat, drenched in sweat for doing not even half of the workout Rio is doing.
Rio carefully lowers down the heavy dumbbells and reorganizes his breath as he takes a break.
"So, are you still chasing Avery?" Rio asks.
Han sucks water out of the bottle, then licks his lips before answering him, "Honestly speaking, I'm losing interest," he answers.
He knows that it'll be different to everyone but seeing what happened to her and Asher, there's a chance that things would likely end up the same.
He's tired of chasing and she keeps hanging up on him, "I think Avery enjoys the thrill, the chase..." he adds while running out of breath.
"Yeah, I think so too," Rio agrees with him.
He then lies down on his back and starts doing sit-ups as if his abs aren't as hard as rock already.
"What about that new girl then?"
"Gwen?"
"Yep, she's pretty," Rio says, being the one who went on a date with her.
"Are you going to make a move on her?"
Han caught Asher making the eyes with Gwen last night and he's not that interested to even try.
Looking at Rio tirelessly working out, he feels motivated to continue and picks up dumbbells.
"You know, I'm feeling it more with my bed partner," Han honestly says.
"I know you like her," Rio says with a glare at him.
He stops doing sit-ups and points at Han, "You just don't want to admit it."
Han has to pause on lifting his dumbbells to continue talking. He suddenly gets flustered because that's true, he keeps denying that there's something more between him and you.
"You two vibe really well," Rio says and he has never seen him being this earnest.
Han stops working out altogether and drops the dumbbells on the floor, "it's because Avery is so my type," he simply defends himself.
"But uh..." he pauses to catch a breath.
"But when I spend time with her, it's... natural," he explains and he doesn't care if that doesn't make sense to Rio, "It's so much fun."
Han breaks down on the floor and wipes the sweat on his forehead with the back of his hand, "I overlooked her because she doesn't look like my type."
Rio nods and intently listens to him speak.
"As soon as I saw Gwen last night, I was like... I still prefer her," he admits.
Han doesn't know why he can easily share his feelings with Rio, probably because he feels like a brother to him. Rio taps his shoulder hard enough that it launches him forward.
"You guys are cute together, and get along well, I don't see why you shouldn't try it, man!" He looks so annoyed and eager to see it happen.
Han laughs at that but he wishes he could easily share his feelings like this to you.
-
HAN: Maybe I should open up and accept how I'm feeling rather than keep seeking what's not there.
-
The mud is drying as you're walking back to the villa after having a girls-only workshop at the beach.
You share the shower with Sawyer to wash off the dried mud and waste no time getting ready for a party Lana throws to welcome the new arrivals.
The dressing room is crowded so you grab your make-up pouch to do it in the bathroom and you can do the hair later when it's less crowded in there.
For now, you're brushing your wet hair to the back while looking at your reflection in the mirror.
As you're about to apply moisturizer, you see Han walking into the bathroom and the first thing you see is that gummy smile of his.
"Hi, stud muffin," you playfully call him.
He would usually laugh at the pet names you called him but he only smiles in response, the kind that you've never seen on him.
"What's up?" You ask in wonder.
He doesn't say anything but leans against the sink facing you, looking at you with a cryptic smile dancing on his face.
He finally does something, walking up to you and placing his hands on each side of your waist. Slowly, he brings his mouth to your ear and whispers, "I missed you."
You reflexively burst into waves of laughter and think that he's just playing with you.
"I'm getting concerned," you tell him with a nervous laugh.
Han is also laughing and then he leans in to whisper again, "I miss you when you're not around."
You're giggling because the last thing you expect is to hear him saying that he missed you even though you've only been apart from each other for about three hours.
"Aww..." you coo at him, laughing the second your eyes meet in a gaze.
He cups your jaw then tilts your head, and you close your eyes in reflex. Instead of what you thought it would be, he softly whispers.
"I think I like you."

So a few days ago I saw someone (elsewhere) questioning Zutara fans’ excitement about the scarf scene. It wasn't a mean comment, more general curiosity. And well, I didn't have time to get my thoughts out then. But they haven't gone away, so I'm getting them out here:
Here’s what everyone need to understand about Zutara shippers. We were baited baaaad during the initial run of the show–from the magazines to the shorts to the trailers and how they were cut. And Zuko and Katara’s relationship on the show certainly underwent a lot of development and featured objectively emotional–if not overtly romantic–moments between the two. We were well fed, and we had reason to hope. Right up to the end, we had reason to hope.
The shipping wars were the shipping wars, of course, with all the usual tensions; there are always going to be overzealous fans of each (and any) pairing willing to get toxic. Generally, I think Kataang fans were always jealous of Zutara’s popularity and Zutara fans, post finale, were jealous of Kataang’s, well, canon status. But really it operated much the same as any other large fandom’s shipping wars.
And then came Bryke and the panel where they showed and mocked Zutara fan art, some of which had been created by teens if not straight up children. Then came their, “Come on, kids! It was never going to work. Zutara is just dark and intriguing.”* And the pièce de résistance, their telling Zutara shippers (specifically girls/women) that they were doomed to have failed romantic relationships. Like, what? The thing with the art was arguably cruel, and the rest of it was oh, so condescending. Just all around not well done.
The after effect was that Zutara went from being simply a fanon pairing to a wrong pairing. The ATLA fandom at large became a far more hostile place for Zutara fans, who were now more commonly deemed delusional and viewed as lesser fans. The vitriol only got worse when the show came to Netfilx and the next wave of antis rolled up with their co-opting of legitimate socio-political terms to paint Zutara not just as wrong but morally corrupt if not evil. It’s all very puritanical.**
So Zutara fans need to be reminded that we weren’t delusional, and we aren’t alone. It’s why it means so much to know that Dante Basco and Mae Whitman shipped their characters. And that so many other VAs came out as Zutara supporters too: Jack De Sena, Michaela Jill Murphy, Grey DeLisle, Janet Varney--even the cabbage man. For it to be revealed that it was discussed in the writers room; that the writers fought over it; that it WAS a canon possibility. (And that writers Joshua Hamilton and John O’Bryan are perfectly comfortable admitting their preference for Zutara.) To know that the Elizabeth Welch Ehasz described Zuko and Katara as an “Avatar-style Mr. and Mrs. Smith,” in the script for The Southern Raiders, and used the phrase “Zutara-feuling synchronicity and cooperation” to describe their action sequences. To see Giancarlo Volpe, a Kataanger, admit Zutara might been the better pairing in retrospect and choose a quiet scene between them (to see their “chemistry”) as what he’d most look forward to in the live action adaptation. It’s why we cling to the artwork done by Korean animation director. We aren’t delusional. We aren’t alone.
But try telling that to the general fandom, right? Most are ignorant of a lot of this, particularly Hamilton and O’Bryan’s revelations re: the writers room. A lot of Zutara fans don't even seem to know. But being baited by Netflix on their official accounts? Oh, people see that. And we are reminded in a big way that we aren't delusional and we aren't alone. And everyone else has to remember it too.
So, of course, we're having fun clowning over the scarf scene. And I think most Zutara fans know we are clowning. I don't think most expect to get canon Zutara in live action because of one little scene or the fact that their Netflix icons are facing each other. (I headcanon that that was totally the doing of Zutara shipper on staff, though, lol. Because there are a lot of us, and we are everywhere.)
And this is okay. Zutara has been doing just fine as a fanon ship. Meanwhile, NATLA might actually do Kataang justice. It always worked better as a future ship. (Really all the pairings do. But I especially don't ever need to see another 12 year old kissing let alone making out, in animation or live action, ever again.) There's a reason Padme and Anakin don't get together in Phantom Menace, after all. Also, there's always the chance they could give us Dante's or Mae's headcanon of them basically suppressing their feelings and choosing duty over love/right person-wrong time. And the odds of getting some more moments to clown over are high enough.
Anyway, TLDR: Zutara has been made to feel like an out-of-nowhere crack ship and the live action crumbs remind us that it is not. And this is at least partially why we are enjoying it. (Because, also, it's just fun!)
*Side tangent: I’ve never gotten this dark and intriguing comment. Even during Season 1, the height of the capture fic era, Zutara was always a ship fundamentally about hope, predicated on Zuko's redemption. (Back in the day, there were also plenty of antis arguing that there was no way Zuko would ever be one of the gaang.) And they say “intriguing” like it’s a bad thing? Are we not supposed to be interested in the relationships of their characters???
**There have been some very good think pieces written lately on late stage capitalism and consumption as morality. Worth googling.

The Vinsmoke men are misogynistic and it's so narratively important even though it's mostly subtext and never outright stated. None of them ever say anything against women specifically, and they don't seem to discriminate as far as who can be warriors, but their actions reek of it nonetheless and I can't stop thinking about it.
On the surface it seems like Sanji gives thought to treating women differently and the Vinsmokes don't, but it's clear through their actions that the only "equality" they're really upholding is that no gender is exempt from abuse and exploitation.
It's like when people say "well if you want equality, women should get drafted into the military too!" When the problem is that no one should be forced to join the military. That's basically exactly what Germa is doing.
Sanji's view of women is frequently flawed and a bit myopic, but he seeks to treat them with kindness and love and respect, whereas the Vinsmokes make no attempt at philosophy about women and just treat them horribly.
The most glaring example is probably Cosette, who they berated for making food they didn't like and then proceeded to beat unconscious solely to shatter her confidence and upset Sanji. And when Sanji is understandably enraged at their horrible abuse, they assume the reason is that he was physically attracted to her and didn't want the object of his attraction damaged (saying they didn't know he Liked her, and if the busted up face wasn't a dealbreaker they could make her Sanji's personal attendant, which also reaaally sounds like code for something else).
Another aspect is that despite having no emotions, the Vinsmoke brothers still seem to experience attraction to women. But it's not love in any sense of the word, just purely physical. They find Nami attractive, even wanting to arrange to keep her around when the Strawhats are captured by Big Mom (ew), and there's that scene of them and Judge in their private room surrounded by mostly drunken unconscious (and rather scantily dressed if I remember correctly) barmaids that were sent to them. Granted, nothing Happens in that scene, but the undertones are gross and we're only shown a small portion of the night. Whatever the case, it's clear that these women were not sent in to be equal, respectable company, but an objectified distraction to pair with alcohol, and were treated as such.
And then there are the internal family dynamics, which I think are the biggest and most important part.
To start, there's Reiju. On the surface she seems like she has the same status as her brothers, a modified Germa weapon capable of performing as her father wants. But whenever Judge talks about being proud of his children, he always emphasizes the triplets. Often he doesn't even mention Reiju, and his attention to the boys' training seems to be much closer than to hers. Her raid suit is also more sexualized, as though that's expected to be part of her arsenal. And of course, there's her name meaning "zero" while the boys are all numbered. She is the eldest, but she survives by being ignored, and it's clear that her father prefers her emotionless brothers. This feels symbolic as well since being emotional is often seen as a feminine trait, portrayed as a weakness. Judge hates weakness. And so he hates emotion, hates women.
But at the root of it all, really, is Sora. Sora who's choices and body and children were stolen from her for an abusive man's ideals about war and domination. We don't really get to know how much choice she had in her marriage, but given Judge's royal status and the fact that they obviously share zero values I think it would have to be a strategic political arrangement at best, and something she got no say in at worst.
The kids are all named in a numbering system, which also reeks of Judge not letting her into the decisions. And, of course, there is the absolutely horrific experience of being forced into prenatal surgery to genetically modify her children against her will, to the point that the only way she could exercise any agency was to poison herself in an attempt to save even one of them. She was literally just a baby-producing machine to Judge and it couldn't be more blatant.
The violent, self-centered, and misogynistic Vinsmoke brothers are born directly from a woman's choice being taken away from her. Kind, selfless, and loving Sanji is born directly from her one act of defiance, and then later saved by his sister's one act of defiance as well (after which, she was programmed to be obedient).
Basically, the Vinsmoke family is built and preserved on the abuse and exploitation of women, and Sanji is the black sheep for many reasons, but I suspect a rather large one is that he's the ultimate antithesis to that.

hey i know your post about your mom was mostly just a personal vent, but i have to say, do you realize that also happens with trans girls and their fathers? literally happened to one of my friends. i’m not trying to downplay your experience or something but i found it strange that you seem to think this is something that only affects transmascs
i have one question for you: so fucking what?
i don’t doubt that trans girls have experienced similar things and yeah, that’s bad too, but what the fuck does that have to do with me and the specific things i’m facing as a result of being a trans man? i never said “look at this thing that happens to ONLY trans men and NO ONE ELSE,” i just said “hey, isn’t this thing that happens to a lot of trans men, including myself, fucked up?”
i would also like to point out that what you’re talking about is in fact a different (albeit similar) thing. the way cis people treat trans people can differ dramatically based on the cis person’s gender because their commitment to gender roles is, like, a major part of problem. the specific way a cis mother reacts to her trans son’s transition is often going to be very distinct, while a cis father will likely respond to his trans daughter in a different but equally distinct way.
what i’m talking about is a very specific kind of ownership and control and self-victimization and total lack of boundaries masquerading as love and care and maternal concern that cis women (i would argue white cis women in particular) project onto their transmasc kids when we do literally anything to our bodies. i’m talking about a phenomenon which is closely related to the way moms often pass eating disorders onto their daughters (or children they view as daughters) because they see a body that looks something like theirs and project all of their insecurities and ideals onto it. i’m talking about a form of parental transphobia and projection that’s specific to the dynamic of a cis mother and her child who was “supposed to” be her daughter.
if you’ve never felt that, you’re not even remotely qualified to tell me shit about how i should be talking about that experience, and if you couldn’t recognize that experience when you read my post, i’m guessing you probably haven’t experienced it because the replies to that post made it very clear to me that anyone who has experienced it firsthand immediately knew exactly what i meant.
like, yeah, cis dads also project onto their trans daughters, but are they likely to have a reaction like running away with actual tears streaming down their face? do you expect them to passive aggressively make comments about how sad their kid’s transition makes them, how it’s such a difficult emotional time, how it’s so tragic because their kid’s body was so beautiful before? do you think their go-to transphobic reaction will be weaponizing their emotions? i’m sure there are some dads out there who are like that, but i think we can agree they’re in the minority because that’s not how cis men are taught to react and parents like this tend to be pretty damn committed to following the gender roles they were taught.
and even if i’m wrong and our experiences are exactly the same, let me reiterate that i never said this was an experience exclusive to trans men. all i said is that it happens to us. that’s just a statement of objective fact.
this started in my life when i got my hair cut short for the first time almost a decade ago and it has not stopped since. i’ve watched my mom cry over me changing my name and respond to being asked if my happiness matters more to her than my name by saying “i care about both”, i’ve watched her melt down in a mall over me getting a suit for prom and give me the silent treatment for days after, i’ve heard her plead with me to stop t because it “looks unnatural” and she’s just so “concerned for my health”, i’ve watched her stare at me post-op and say “my poor baby” over and over like she’s looking at my corpse in a casket. i’ve watched her turn herself into the victim of every single aspect of my transition. i’ve had to live with this for 9 years and spent the early years of the pandemic literally locked in a house with it. this has been my entire adolescent and adult life, and the question of if i’ll have to cut her off someday (and maybe never see my cat or my little cousins who i love more than anything in the world ever again as a result) haunts me every single day.
who the fuck are you to tell me how to talk about that?
#i hope you weren’t expecting me to take this in good faith and give a nice measured response#because just so we’re clear you didn’t have a chance in hell of doing anything other than pissing me off#like in case you forgot i am a real person who this is happening to#in what world did you think i’d care about how an anonymous stranger feels about how i describe it when im the one who has to live it#idk man. some of y’all clearly do not see me as an actual person capable of emotion and it shows#also like. using a friend’s experience is wild bc 1) how do you know it was the same if it didn’t happen to you#and 2) would that friend really want you using their experience against another trans person experiencing something similar?#anon hate#ask answered#examples of transandrophobia#transandrophobia#transandromisia#transmisandry#virilmisia#virilphobia#anti transmasculinity#transmascphobia#trans men

Allow me to present the defense case for Peggy Carter.
I don't mean the PC who is in What If BTW. I don't know who she is, but she's not Peggy. I mean the original version from 2011-2014, especially from recently re-watching The First Avenger.
Peggy comes off as being very aloof, detached and rather condascending at times. I argue that's because she had to be. Its very hard for women in the armed forces even today- but back in the 1940s it would have been even more difficult for a woman to hold her own in a male dominated context like the army. She'd have had to worked many times harder to prove herself and to gain the respect which her male counterparts took for granted purely by virtue of their gender and rank. If she showed any kind of emotional vulnerability or it seemed like she didn't know what she was doing, the men would have pounced on it and taken it as "evidence" she was just a weak and feeble woman who didn't belong in "thier" world. Even then... we still see people being insubordinate and talking down to her. When she punched that soldier who was making lewd remarks (can't remember his name) I don't see her being a bully. I see a woman having to deal with the type of casual sexism she probably experienced on a daily basis. When men who were far below her in rank treated her with contempt or just saw her as a sex object. No way that soldier would *ever* have spoken to a senior ranking male like that... She was also dealing with it in a very masculine way. Like another soldier would. In regards to Steve: again I don't think Peggy is ever intentionally mean or cruel to him. Yes, she's sassy and snarky, but I think she had to learn to be like that to hold her own among men. Her interactions with him in the movie are actually quite positive overall: she smiles when he uses his ingenuity and jumps on a dummy grenade, she doesn't talk about how weak he was she views him as a proper soldier when a lot of others don't: including Colonel Phillips. Even after the Serum Philips just sees him as some glorified performer whereas she trusts his judgement: reluctantly at first but willingly afterwards.
For his own part, Steve never talks down to her or views her as inferior. He was probably one of first men who did that only after Howard Stark perhaps.
When she said that Bucky was probably dead: again I don't think she was being uncaring. That line came after just after saying the 107th had been through "more than most" upon seeing an ambulance bringing an injured soldier back from the front. It seems to me she didn't want to see *another* man die in what she had every reason to think was a suicide mission. I mean, its very likely she'd lost friends before, maybe even had family members killed. Besides of which, she ended up helping Steve go on that rescue mission by persauding Howard to drop him near the HYDRA facility on his plane. Then didn't apologize for her actions afterwards even though Colonel Philipps basically threatened to basically demote her.
Finally, that scene where she fires her gun at Steve's shield: again I don't see that as bullying. When he kissed that other woman (*who did it very deliberately in front of Peggy*) it was quite obviously an attempt to make her jealous. (Not on Steve's part, but the other woman). I think in that moment she felt betrayed, because she believed Steve was different to the other men she encountered. Men who just saw her as a conquest or an airhead. She thought he was behaving "just like the other soldiers"- i.e treating women as objects, and she had an emotional reaction. She was actually wrong, but that proves she's flawed. She's human after all!
So yeah, Peggy in The First Avenger is great. She's sassy and snarky but she does seem to genuinely care for Steve as well. I see them as having a lot in common: both people who struggle to be accepted by others but find their place eventually.
Okay, before I start, I want to say that I did like her mannerisms when I first saw CATFA, because I like no-nonsense female characters. However, movies!Peggy was not a fully formed character — just as movies!Bucky wasn’t. One was the token love interest, the other was the token best friend. Hence, there are specific traits embedded in Peggy’s characterisation, or rather her story roles, that are factors of a male author writing a female love interest for a genre about macho superhero men. Which in itself is a product of the misogynistic nature of 2010 MCU.
Firstly, she’s never actually had her rank or her professional role specified. She introduced herself as an “agent supervising all operations of this division”, but all she does is hover around Howard and Philips in their offices. She’s not on the battlefield with Steve (no matter how her own series tried to rewrite it). She’s not in the field acting as a spy/agent. We are told she’s important, because somehow as an agent she’s giving orders to military trainees — a weird role but we can give her that suspension of disbelief — but we are never shown her doing anything important to contribute to war efforts. More than this being Peggy is a useless person, it’s a symptom of the writer not knowing how to handle a female professional in WW2, to the point of calling her an agent but having her both being in the science division and giving military trainee orders but hanging around looking like a secretary. And why exactly could Philips threaten to demote her? Who does she even work for? He could demote her if she’s military but she’s not. So it’s never clear that those soldiers are her subordinates, because they’re not. She’s not in the chain of command! And so why should they respect someone who’s not in their chain of command telling them that she’s going to give orders? She does have to earn it.
You and I remember that kissing scene very differently. Firstly, Lorraine pulled him into a kiss, Steve didn’t kiss her. We need to get the instigator clear here. We can debate how much of a willing participant Steve was, because that scene can be read anywhere from “Steve was unsure at first but then started to enjoy it” to “Steve was in shock the whole time and his hands came up to push her away”. Secondly, there’s no suggestion that either Lorraine or Steve knew Peggy was within watching distance, so I don’t agree with the interpretation that anyone did it to make Peggy jealous. Thirdly, Peggy and Steve were not an item at that stage, so it’s rather presumptuous of her to “feel betrayed”. What did he betray? He said he was waiting for the right partner, he didn’t say the right partner was her. She’s the one who’s taken it upon herself to demand his faithfulness. He never indicated he was happy to enter into that social contract. Fourthly, you’ve acknowledged that her emotional response to another woman kissing Steve was “flawed”, but object to that violent retaliation being called “bullying”. So let’s call it for what it is: unprofessional, unethical, unromantic, and bloody unhinged.
I’m sorry, there is no possible justification for discharging a gun at a man (and specifically in this case a man who is not in a relationship with you) over a kiss in an enclosed space at work where other bystanders could get injured.
But you know what? That scene is another symptom of male writers not knowing how to write a strong female love interest. In 2010 everyone knew it would be bad form if a man hit a woman for being kissed by another man, but violent anger from a woman directed at a man? That was seen as cute and funny and sweet. And that view exists because of the infantilisation of women. Female anger is seen as “not that hurtful” and “not that important”, dismissed as a momentary “emotional outburst” because women are prone to emotional outbursts, it’s a womanly thing to suddenly lose grip on logic over a jilted love. Where in a man that emotional volatility and violence would be a major character flaw that would turn him into a villain, in a woman that’s…cute and harmless.
So you know, Peggy was at the same level of neglect that Bucky-with-two-birthdates was. She was not a character they cared enough about to even give her a proper professional role in the army. She’s there because the movie needed a love interest. She’s there to show how unwanted Steve was before the serum, and how desirable he became after the serum. She appears, every now and then, to remind the audience she exists, but never in a way that directly affects the plot. @amarriageoftrueminds has multiple excellent metas explaining why the story could have proceeded without Peggy being present. She’s a character we are continuously told is important, but the narrative gives her only counselling type dialogues, and while those conversations are placed at narratively important milestones, none of her suggestions make any sway on Steve’s original plans before he started talking to her, making her someone who has minimal impact on Steve’s arc and on the story as a whole.

Lately I’ve been feeling like Thai bl is truly all over the place with so many shows airing at once and some of the best ones flying under the radar while discourse is focused on a couple of the big messy ones. I think you’re the only person I know who is actually watching ALL of them and has been here for the whole evolution of the genre, so I’m curious what stands out to you about this current moment. Do the shows feel different to you? Is the way fandom is interacting with them changing? And what are your current favs?
I ended up writing a thesis, sorry friend lol To be fair to me there are 3 questions in there, all of them meaty! I've done my best to give a sense of where I'm at with Thai BL and how it feels like it's changed over time.
Caveating all of this: I am just one fan who I'm sure has had specific experiences that will colour my opinion, also a lot of this is just vibes so I'm open to being told I've forgotten something major or misremembered what it was like! If you are reading this and your opinion or experience is different please share, with stuff like this I'm always interested in hearing about differing opinions because the fandom experience will depend at least partly on where you hang out. For years, my main fandom space for BL was the YouTube comments section (RIP me).

Honestly, things overall don't feel all that different to me in Thai BL in particular, even though I'm about to talk about a lot of changes and ways it actuallyd does feel very different below lol And after reflecting about it, I think it's because these things still feel very much in flux, in a way that they've felt in flux this entire time. Producers are still figuring out the best funding and distribution models and merch models to make money; creators are still calibrating how queer these shows can be and still be popular; actors are still figuring out how to do BGP (business gay performances) without having fans interfere in their private lives off the clock. Writers are still trying to figure out how to write 12-episode arcs that don't drag in the middle or fumble the ending (which is also not new). The tension between established ships, fan expectations, and genre requirements has honestly been there almost the whole time, though the reverberations of missteps is louder now because of the larger fanbase that is (comparatively) more plugged in to live viewing. The core question in BL has always been 'how do we make this marketable', and that unsurprisingly hasn't changed, though the answer to that question has over time, if that makes sense?
Shows
Do the shows feel different? As a whole, I'd say yes. The biggest differences are of course total quantity and overall quality, but the actual distribution of % of shows that have high(er) production values (i.e. quality) feels close to the same--it was close to 50/50 in the late 2010s and now is maybe more like 40/60 with a higher percentage coming from more smaller production companies. But the numbers we're talking about are something like 15 shows in e.g. 2018 and something more like 50 shows in 2023 (being vague because there are shows that people could argue over whether they should count). The quality overall has increased, even the pulps look better, sound better, and tend to feel a little bit more put together than the pulps of even 2020 (please note that these are all relative qualifiers, most of these shows are still not objectively good). 2020 in particular was a watershed moment for high production value BLs; we get colorists and special effects artists, and sometimes decent sound production now!
There has also been an improvement in terms of what is depicted and how certain subject matter is treated very generally, though I think that's still in flux. Things like evil ex girlfriends are less common than they were and the women in BL are more likely (in general, still not always) to be treated as realized characters. We've gotten more and better femme representation in ensemble shows, and the "gay for you" trope is much less common. Consent is now considered sexy and is much more common than it was; non-consent as "sexy" has eroded and is much less common. Things that used to happen in almost every BL now happen in a much lower percentage. I also feel a little bit less worried about some of the actors on pulp sets because there is more general scrutiny about things like minor actors, intimacy coordination, BGP (business gay performance) expectations, and sexual exploitation. Overall, show recommendations these days come with fewer caveats.
The assumption that if you worked with someone on a BL once you would stay with them as an established pairing was surprisingly early in BL; I don't know if it's just because there were a few shows that had side pairings then get main shows, so the actors did work together on a few shows in a row, which made them feel established, or whether it's because the BGP started early to build hype both before and after shows aired, or whether audiences just made homophobic assumptions about how if two actors had chemistry they had to be gay for each other, and otherwise nobody would want to "play gay" more than once, or would want to have to kiss too many other men....in any case, there were huge scandals and blow-ups around this in BL on even the earliest shows, and some early shows were snubbed because of the pairing alone. Similarly, it was established very early in BL (i.e. 2016-17) that an unhappy ending for a pair would result in your show being panned; cheating was also a guaranteed flop in BL circles (though some ensemble shows that had gay relationships in them such as Friend Zone did fine with cheating plots and unhappy endings). Overall it feels like some things were only depicted in early Thai BL and creators have avoided them since due to the audience reception at the time. I will say, generally, that there have now been enough examples of people in a "branded pair" moving on to a new pair or multiple shows, that it feels less like a death knell to a BL career if one of the actors says they no longer wanted to make BLs, or if they switched companies.
I pay a lot of attention to queerness in BL, and that has changed a little bit too, though not in the way I expected. I had been expecting a more clear and steady trajectory in BL, but we've instead had real swings, and I've realized there will just always be shows that feel more or less actually gay or queer than others, and that's ok. Early Thai shows really spoiled us for good queer content, GayOK Bangkok and Diary of Tootsies are still shows by which i measure what we get now, and both of those are from 2016. I would say that more "mainstream" BL (i.e. by one of the major production companies) hit what turned out to be queer saturation around 2020 and that's where I was most surprised not see a more clear trajectory; rather than things getting more queer from there, I'd say a greater percentage of shows overall feel more queer, but we haven't (and I now suspect won't) reach the queerness we had in Thai tv in 2016. That being said, my secret running list of things I want to see in BL gets shorter every year as entries get crossed off, so I would say the range of queer experience is slowly getting captured as more content continues to be made by a wider range of production houses (PrEP being mentioned in a mainstream show is my white whale).
I know some people assume that shows are higher heat now overall, but I don't think that's true. I do think Thai television producers and directors have overalll gotten better at capturing sensuality, and acting workshops have improved chemistry-building overall too. But from what I can tell the ratio of high head and low heat content is still pretty similar to what it's always been, maybe slightly higher (e.g. at a quick glance I'd guesstimate 30% of shows had a sex scene in 2018 vs 40% in 2023).
Fandom
The main differences in fandom from the really early days and now are the ways we, as international fans, are able to engage with each other, with thai audiences at the same time, and with content creators, and the entitlement that comes with that. In the 2010s we were almost always watching after Thai airing, with either fansubs or, later, official subs, trailing online releases by days or weeks, which themselves may have trailed the Thailand airing date by days or weeks or sometimes even months. That became less true around 2019ish, and especially in 2020 when I think Thai producers were desperate to reach audiences during the start of the pandemic (and when audiences were desperate for something to distract us from what was happening in real life).
As a fan in the mid-late 2010s, watching something was either unofficial via a fansubber, or you were wading through hundreds of Thai comments to find anyone else writing about the shows in English. Now, it's actually rare we don't have immediate international distribution, though it may be paid. If the subs are not up at the same time as the official upload, even on free sites, fans get furious. It's a bit surreal to see people complain about waiting a few hours for subtitles, especially on YouTube, when we sometimes waited months for a series to finish being subbed (not to say people didn't complain back then too, because they sure did! But there were fewer international fans overall, and it wasn't an expectation that there would be subs, so fewer people complained when it happened). This meant that a lot of people only watched shows when they were complete, and people were not watching with any kind of synchronicity.
With international fans moving into simultaneous watching with Thai audiences, we suddenly had the chance to talk about shows as they were airing and affect the conversations about them and even, sometimes, the decisions. Folks seem to have differing opinions about what makes a BL, and what makes a BL good, and they are vocal about when a show doesn't meet their standard. This has always been true, but the strong opinions have more of an effect on the discourse when they're expressed in real-time to the show being aired. Also, when we have literally 3x the number of Thai shows being aired (nevermind other countries which have also increased), it seems so much more egregious to me to complain if a single show doesn't meet your particular taste. Just go watch something else! That was less possible in 2016, but now nobody has any excuse lol Please note here that I'm not saying shows should not be criticized. But when you have one loud faction saying shows should have nothing but innocent kisses if any skinship at all and showing more is distasteful and possibly homophobic, and another faction saying a show should be panned if they don't have at least one sex scene and if there is no good kiss it's homophobic, I don't know where that leaves content creators but I see the tension and how it sometimes results in my least favourite tropes like "blushing maiden" even after a couple has canonically had sex. These factions have always existed in BL fandom, this is not new, they just both seem particularly silly now with so much content to choose from.
The shows that get attention and the shows that get snubbed feel the same too, in all honesty. You can ask yourself the following questions:
Is the show a little slower paced?
Are the story beats less melodramatic?
Do its characters feel more human?
Do they feel more queer?
Is it a comedy?
Is there any risk of an unhappy ending?
Do people not think one of the lead actors is hot?
Do people ship one of the lead actors with someone who isn't his costar?
Do people have to do anything other than go to YouTube to watch it?
If the answer is yes to any of those questions, and especially to the last one, fewer people will be watching, even if the show is good. That's always been true. [Shows I'm thinking about when I say that: Make it Right, He's Coming to Me, My Ride, You're My Sky, Oxygen (though the sides in this one are also at fault), YYY, Something in my Room, Ghost Host Ghost House, Dear Doctor I'm Coming for Soul, Cooking Crush.] All this is to say, there have always been shows that have been ignored, though I agree with you OP that with more shows airing, more are being ignored at any given time.
The other thing is that when a show is good, it doesn't necessarily invite discourse. The messes are often what encourage people to dig in, fill in gaps, linger in the adrenaline. The part that does feel different is also related to the increase in genre BLs; genre stuff in general tends to get more attention in fandom spaces, and the way people are functioning as fans feels different in that they're bringing the way they interact with genre content to BL as BL has started having larger and better funded genre content. I'm thinking about those early genre BLs like He She It, My Dream, Love Poison, Golden Blood, So Much In Love, Why R U....we started getting genre shows in BL in I think 2017 and basically had 1-2 a year until 2020ish and then it increased from there; and the ones that had funding and decent distribution got engagement until they started going off the rails, and then they had even more engagement and then fell off. I don't think it's a coincidence that the shows last year that got people to write meta were La Pluie, Be My Favorite, and I Feel You Linger in the Air. When a show is building a world, there's more to say and interrogate about it, and when a genre show fails, it can fail more spectacularly than a regular romance story. The most popular BL shows used to all be straight-up BL bubble romances, but I think genre shows really started to take over a greater percentage of the popular spots in 2022 and 2023. Again, the main difference here is that there used to be 1-2 stand-out shows per year, and now there are closer to 6+ per year, and as we got more stand-out shows the variety of what type of show stood out as popular has expanded. I do think the overall percentage of shows that are more standard romance plots has reduced, partly because Thai production companies are running out of popular y-novels to adapt. So I'm anticipating we'll continue to get more genre content going forward, and maybe a higher percentage of original works too.
Shows I'm Enjoying Right Now
Right now, the Thai shows airing that I'm watching are:
Cooking Crush
Dead Friend Forever
Cherry Magic Thailand
City of Stars
The Sign
Playboyy
PitBabe
7 Days before Valentine
For Him
Of those, I'd currently most recommend Cooking Crush as a generic BL recommendation. Dead Friend Forever is very good, but is not a romance and is difficult for some to watch (there are a lot of dark themes in addition to the gore and scary bits).
Cooking Crush is doing so many things I love. I've written about the way it's set up its major conflict to be amongst the friend group here, and way the show is depicting communication between the two main characters and how they improve their communication with one another as they get closer here. Two of my biggest BL pet peeves are a conflict for the sake of a dramatic penultimate episode that ignores or retcons a character's growth or the building of trust that a couple has already gone through in the series, so the fact that this show is working so hard to establish strong communication between its leads and then setting up the significant drama to actually about friendship rather than romance is something I cannot overstate my excitement about. To tie this back into what I wrote above, this reminds me of Diary of Tootsies and I mean that in the best possible way.
Dead Friend Foreever is, like I mentioned above, not a romance; it's a slasher horror melodrama with a very well established mystery, an ensemble cast of mostly hateable characters (which I admit isn't usually my thing, but since they're likely all going to die as a result of the genre they're in I'm finding that more tolerable than usual, and there is at least one character I like). DFF did a great job of structuring the story for the ultimate payoff of information reveals. There are a lot of shows that have been messing with non-linear storytelling recently, Cooking Crush being one of the ones that actually does this poorly in my opinion, but Dead Friend Forever effectively uses non-linear storytelling so that we find out important pieces of information about particular characters at a time when that information will have the most emotional impact on what is happening in the "present" of the storyline. Every time there is a reveal, it informs what we've already seen, recontextualizes it, and means we understand some of the character motivations and actions differently from when we saw them the first time. I mentioned above that there are dark themes in this show; one of the things that I really like about this show is that the impact of class is not glossed over, and that the consequences of these events feel very real for the characters; people do terrible things in this show, but these actions are not treated lightly by the show itself.
You'd think these two shows would have nothing in common, but there are things that they share that put them both in my top category. Generally, in both of these shows, the character arcs are clear and logical; when a character does something, even if I don't like the action itself, I can understand exactly why they that and can see how it matches where they are in their arc at the time. The shows show change in characters as a result of what they experience, and the relationships in this show really matter. When characters start acting in ways that feel out of character or against their own arc because they have to in order to drive the plot forward, I struggle to remain invested; that's not happening with either of these shows. Both of these shows also treat serious topics with seriousness, and consequences for actions are real and felt by the characters in the show (and if someone gets away with something, the show is clear that this is not just). Nothing has happened that hasn't been signalled or implied earlier. Both shows also have clear class consciousness and represent the disparity caused by classism in a critical/harsh light.
Whew! I think I got to everything you asked. Thanks again for the extremely interesting question!
#ask game#bl meta#long post#typed so that I can stop thinking it#fandom meta#multi bl#thank you for the ask!

One of the things that piss me off the absolute most about popular academic Frankenstein analysis is the “Victor Frankenstein is sexist” take. Like I know I’ve spoken about this quite a lot before but god damn it’s like people just look at the text and see, “(I) looked upon Elizabeth as mine—mine to protect, love, and cherish. All praises bestowed on her I received as made to a possession of my own.”, and they just immediately go, “Oh! Oh! Sexism! Misogyny! Victor Frankenstein is a sexist! Why does he want to create the perfect man, huh? *gasp* is it because he thinks women are inferior?”
When if those people pulled their heads out of their asses for five minutes and read the rest of that paragraph, “On the evening previous to her being brought to my home, my mother had said playfully, “I have a pretty present for my Victor—tomorrow he shall have it.” And when, on the morrow, she presented Elizabeth to me as her promised gift, I, with childish seriousness, interpreted her words literally and looked upon Elizabeth as mine (…)” along with the fact that Victor explicitly says he was “about five years old”, they’d maybe consider, “huh, maybe it’s very fucked up of a mother to give her to her son as a gift and spent her entire life basically shipping these two adopted siblings together until, on her death bed, she says, “my firmest hopes of future happiness were placed on the prospect of your union. This expectation will now be the consolation of your father.” Wow, maybe that’s kind of fucked up. Maybe painting, again, a five year old, who was honesty for all intents and purposes pretty much just manipulated into thinking it was his duty to marry his adopted sister out of respect for his dead mother’s last wishes who died when he was seventeen, as a wife-beating woman hater who reanimated the dead to spite half the human population, is very very fucked up!”
Like I can’t stress this enough – both Elizabeth and Victor are victims here. Of course as the story goes on a bit and Victor is a grown adult man who’s still avoiding his feelings and fucking off across the continent with his buddy pal best friend every five minutes instead of facing his mistakes and emotions, yeah, he is honestly more or less to blame for Elizabeth’s death, but that isn’t misogyny. Avoidance of everything is like one of his integral character flaws.
And I mean if you thought the 1831 republication had some creepy undertones, look at the bloody original 1818 version.
“(My uncle) request(ed) my father (…) take charge of the infant Elizabeth, the only child of his deceased sister. “It is my wish,” he said, “that you should consider her as your own daughter, and educate her thus.”’
So just explicit incest, basically. And again, if you thought Victor’s mother was a bit creepy and pushy in the republication,
“I have often heard my mother say, that she was at that time the most beautiful child she had ever seen, and shewed signs even then of a gentle and affectionate disposition. These indications, and a desire to bind as closely as possible the ties of domestic love, determined my mother to consider Elizabeth as my future wife; a design which she never found reason to repent.”
“………A desire to bind as closely as possible the ties of domestic love?” My brother in Christ you were groomed. Fun fact, I read the 1818 version first and read that in the middle of form class and sat for a good five minutes staring flabbergasted at what the fuck I was reading.
So no, dear God no, nowhere in the text does it imply Victor Frankenstein hates women. I mean honestly it’s kind of shown in the way he talks about the Creature’s Bride that he doesn’t view women as objects and does, in fact, view them as people.
“He had sworn to quit the neighbourhood of man and hide himself in deserts, but she had not; and she, who in all probability was to become a thinking and reasoning animal, might refuse to comply with a compact made before her creation.”
My guy basically says “well what are we expecting her to do here, immediately marry you just because she was told to?”
(Just a fun little comparison I noticed there – not to turn the conversation back to my whole “does Victor is gay” theory but I think it is interesting that Victor thinks that, that he does go “well she can’t just be expected to marry someone just because she was told to!” and then suggests to himself that she would probably rather “turn with disgust from him to the superior beauty of man” – interesting, Victor. Like Clerval’s “form so divinely wrought, and beaming with beauty”? Interesting as well that after Victor comes to that conclusion and destroys the Bride, the Creature immediately then kills Henry and only then does Victor finally go “well. I finally have to marry Elizabeth.” Feeling disheartened by sparing her your predicament only to be thrust even deeper into your own, are we?)
But yeah. “Victor Frankenstein is a full-blown women-hating misogynist” takes really piss me off. Another case of “oooh yes let’s cherry pick the text scouring it for anything we can possibly use to turn things back around to the same few analysis points we’ll reuse over and over instead of possibly considering that just because a text is written by a woman doesn’t mean that it’s a massive rant on the patriarchy disguised as a science fiction novel.”
Maybe that’s kind of sexist itself. Maybe women can just write kick-ass gothic horror sometimes. And maybe just because a work definitely has undertones about sexism and misogyny (like, fair enough, a lot of Elizabeth’s character definitely does) that doesn’t mean that the male protagonist wants to kill all women! And surprise surprise as well, works can comment on misogyny and patriarchy and acknowledge that women are treated badly in society and have been in differing ways for hundreds of years, without going “all men are inherently evil and fuck them all”. Bit of a side rant that I won’t go all into here, but just worth mentioning that after seeing this over and over again in media and analysis of media over and over again, hey, misandry won’t fix misogyny. It just makes everything considerably stupidly worse. –your friendly neighbourhood bisexual

I know it’s been said but I find it so weird when people demonise Dora. The one interaction that we get with her- the REAL her- in the whole game, she is extremely patient, despite the fact that Harry is calling her in the middle of the night and asking creepo shit like ‘are you sleeping naked’. We can infer through context clues that this has probably happened multiple times before, and yet she still knows no signs of ill-will towards Harry- she just seems tired and concerned.
And it would be completely within her right to be angry at him for harassing her, as well! Knowing how volatile Harry can be, perhaps she even learned through fear not to confront him. And yet, there still seems to be this perception that, out of the both of them, DORA was the abusive one, despite all evidence pointing to the contrary! It’s not even that I don’t think she wasn’t at least slightly abusive, given Harry’s disabilities and their class differences, but what I am saying is that it was likely mutual, and that, out of the two of them, Harry was worse.
Their relationship probably got horrible and toxic towards the end, of that I have no doubt. What I don’t get is why the fandom seems to believe that Harry, as he currently is, is in any way capable of viewing the relationship objectively. There’s ample evidence that he was violent, frequently misogynistic, and that the experience gap between him and Dora was significant, and yet people still take his worst thoughts at face value. That she’s a ‘war criminal’, that’s she’s a goddess- people seem to think Harry’s deification of her is the main issue, and not the opposite; his virulent hatred towards Dora, towards ‘Revacholian women’.
It just boggles me that people are so willing to believe that Harry was the only one truly hurt- that Dora’s decision to leave was made lightly. We don’t know exactly what happened, and what glimpses we do get are filtered horribly through Harry’s grief, but they were in a relationship for more than a decade! They were planning to get married! I don’t think Dora just up and left for Mirova one day- the way the dream conversation goes seems to suggest they hadn’t been together for a while.
There are so, so many things said during the final dream that are probably just Harry’s self-hatred masquerading as Dora/Dolores- and while I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of it did come from Dora, at other points in their relationship, I think it’s pretty obvious that the final dream is meant to be a confused muddle of Harry’s memories and grief. Why else would she appear as Dolores Dei? But, while no one ever explicitly says it, I feel like a lot of people want to believe that the way things are during the last dream is how they were in real life. That Dora really was cold and cruel to Harry- when in real life she appears as just the opposite, despite what he puts her through.
#and I know the answer as to why people do this is misogyny and also that we simply don’t get to know her very well on her own#and trust me I am well aware that Harry was also hurt badly by Dora. I am in no way trying to villainise him here#their relationship is obviously very complex and multifaceted with both sides being wrong at different points which is extremely realistic#that’s why I love it so much. what I don’t understand is why people will shelve these discussions in favour of woobifying harry#and once again I know the answer is just misogyny and that fandom hates complex female characters#ESPECIALLY if they’ve hurt a male character in some way. but the amount of flat surface level takes I’ve seen about these two…#let’s try and do a bit better instead of just boiling shit down to ‘Harry bad’ or ‘Dora bad’ yeah?#harry du bois#dora ingerlund#harrydora#dolores dei#disco elysium#de meta

Hey. Just wanted to put my two cents in, like everyone else on Tumblr dot com is. (It got pretty long so putting it under a cut)
I don't really care about what you think should happen to the fandom. Like. If you are going to continue to engage in the fandom without giving Neil any sort of gain is fine. I'm personally still on the fence on what the fuck to do now. But let's not make that the whole focus, yeah? What Neil allegedly did was fucking terrible. Like. Objectively worse than what JKR did when things first came out about her. Let's forget good omens and sandman and coraline for a minute (don't care if you still engage with those things or burn your copies and remove your tattoos, let's just put it down for a minute.) and try really hard to think. Because we all hated JKR. We burned her reputation to the ground. For good reason. But we can't even decide if we hate Neil Gaiman yet? Guys. Please. We have to believe all women. Plus he's a rich fucking white dude who has admitted to using his power for gain.
And if it turns out (which this is a 8% chance) that this is all not what it seems to be, or even all of it is fabricated, and Neil is innocent, we still gotta stop worshipping this dude. This has got to be a wakeup call that he's not some Messiah. He's a human dude in power who does the same shitty things human dudes in power do.
And I get it. You want to continue to like your stories that he helped create (key-word 'helped' bc he was a part of a team with a lot of these stories, including Sir Terry Pratchett) but me personally? I would be a massive hypocrite if I metaphorically burned my Harry Potter stories to the ground and put HP fans in my DNI because of JKR but said "separate the art from the artist" with Neil Gaiman.
And this is coming from any other Good Omens fan that became way too attached to the story. Like a lot of people have said that story helped in very. Very fucking trying times. It was my rock, some days the only thing keeping me going. The fandom has been an amazing place of creativity and community and love.
But so was Harry Potter. If you think about it. If any Good Omens fans were previous Harry Potter fans you'll know just how wide spread and open and creative and deep the hp fandom was. And this may just be me misremembering because it was a couple years ago at this point (plus everything with Neil Gaiman is still such news) but because JKR was spouting rhetoric that directly harmed us (us being majority queer and poc people) we drop-kicked hp pretty fast and focused on the artist and her shittiness.
Can we have the same attitude towards Neil? Can we separate the art from the artist long enough to fucking focus on Neil? When I say separate the art from the artist I don't mean "remove artist, continue to enjoy art" I mean "remove the art and focus on the artist, and study that motherfucker". How many video essays are their out about JKR? How many books referencing her terribleness? Without giving so much as a hint to Harry Potter?
Separate the art from the artist and focus on the artist and bringing him to justice. And believe the victims.
And yeah I can see your arguments against the source of the information and who the victims went to tell their stories, I can understand those arguments, but let's look at the data, okay? Let's look at what Scarlett and K actually said with their actual words and their actual messages and separate the source from the material. What Scarlett and K talked about is scary. Terrifying. I couldn't even read more than a little bit before I got triggered. I wasn't caring about how the source podcast was talking about it. What Scarlett and K said with their own words should be enough. Make your own judgements. If you can't look at a story without being influenced by the storyteller's hidden agenda and not have critical thinking skills????? I'm sorry but that's going to be your downfall.
Or better yet, if you can't believe victims because they have political views that differ from your own (which, they probably don't. From what I can tell nobody really fucking knows what Scarlett and K's political views are but it doesn't really matter) you need to really study and look into what you mean when you call yourself a "leftist". Because it's not very progressive or helpful to not believe or help victims because of their political views. Sorry. Is that wild for me to say? Idk
Uh anyways. I don't really care what you do in your free time when it comes to enjoying the fandoms. I don't necessarily think it makes you a terribly shitty person for still engaging in it instead of burning all your Neil Gaiman stories, and also like a lot of people have said (and since I'm on the same boat) treating fans like the scum of the earth when a lot of fans have had good omens as a way to escape and has become super dependent on good omens and are justifiably horrified by everything and trying to ignore it is shitty. But I'm personally going to continue to follow this story because I care about the victims. Not because I want to be guilt-free reading a fanfic about an angel and a demon. Because I care about real life people.
#neil gaiman#god I'm just so scrambled about everything#I would make a post about how it's oh so terrible because I love good omens and it's helped me so much and yadda#but this isn't about me#i can push away my things and my feelings because this isn't about me#i don't want this to be about me#i seriously think that Scarlett and K deserve better#because they're people#i don't care that Neil Gaiman is a 'huge' trans ally#he hurt people. even progressives can hurt people.#i can't tell you how many cool people I looked up to WHO WERE PROGRESSIVES that were shitty. and horrible.#like genuinely I've had to stop engaging with like. five leftists. this year.#idk. if you still enjoy sandman and good omens and coraline good for you I guess#i couldn't care less about how you spend your free time#but for the love of GOD don't promote neil. or defend him. because he wrote your favorite stories.#don't give him any sort of help and any sort of way to get farther and farther away from the justice he must be served.#and you shouldn't care about what I or others are doing with the fandom#everyone should just forget about fandom and focus on this#it's sickening. genuinely.#good omens#sandman#coraline

another fic prompt cause i’m unhinged
in a closed council meeting w no servants (merlin as court sorcerer and next to arthur), arthur starts talking about how he thinks they shouldn’t called servants “servants” because he thinks it’s offensive/derogatory etc. and proposes they call them assistants because that’s what they do; assist.
“with all due respect, my lord,” merlin’s hard stare focused on the king, “that’s bullshit.”
“excuse me?” arthur, shocked by merlin’s comment, but more so by his language. he’d never heard merlin curse in their ten years of knowing each other.
“maybe you’ve forgotten, but i was a servant. your servant.”
“… yes, i’m aware.”
“servants do everything for their masters and more. we are below every other person living in this castle, we have to do whatever anyone tells us to do. we don’t assist. assistance implies we help with a task you are already working on. servitude means we do what we are told, no questions asked, no objections-“
“present company excluded,” merlin hears arthur mutter under his breath and fixes his glare back to his king.
“with only help offered by the occasional kind servant who has no urgent chores. which is very, very rare. we do the work for everyone in the castle, almost never sleep more than a few hours, before waking earlier than everyone else and do it all over again. we sleep even less if we have two jobs and also take care of secret, magical threats to the kingdom and its king.
“so no. we do not assist. we are not assistants. we serve. as servants.”
merlin catches his breath as he glanced around the table, everyone’s expressions ranging from annoyed to shocked to guilty and contemplative.
arthur absorbs every single detail that merlin had revealed. he felt impossibly guilty that not only did merlin do so much for him with no recognition and no rest, but that merlin had spoken as if he was still a servant. did he still feel that way? did people still treat him that way?
“so,” arthur begins quietly, resolving to speak to merlin about that later, “what would you suggest we do instead?”
merlin considers his question for a moment, finally calm after reliving his struggles of the last decade.
“make their lives easier,” merlin catches the confused faces of the council members. “hire more servants so you can give everyone days off without shortages and the chores won’t be spread so thin, increase wages slightly, the crown can afford it without tax increase,” at this, merlin makes sure he looks arthur and all the stuck-up noblemen in the eye.
“but most importantly,” merlin ensures he has everyone’s attention so his voice is truly heard. “be kind and protect them. servants do everything the nobles cannot, this castle would not stand without them. servants cannot protect themselves from visiting noblemen and women whose views are different from camelots. our servants happiness and safety should always be a priority.”
finally, merlin meets arthur’s gaze once again. he expects shock or maybe even anger, but all he sees is pride and adoration.
“it seems we all have a lot to think about,” arthur speaks like a king and merlin is enchanted (ironic). “council is dismissed.”
later, arthur asks merlin about his time as a servant, why he spoke as if he still was one, how people treated him now, etc
and if a few months later, the servants in the castle were happier than ever, well, everyone else was happier because of it.

aka merlin gets to be a bamf and school nobles on class issues while arthur is in awe

Ok but in all seriousness, if we are gonna discuss Peggy OUTSIDE of just the hot bracket. 😂 I know we’re all like “I support women’s wrongs!” and I do love strong female characters myself, even when I know they’re villains! However Peggy may be the exception to that rule, because as much as it seems to go weirdly unacknowledged at times, I’d like to just say that Peggy is just. Objectively. Not that great of a person. 🤡
If I can just explain my viewpoint, I recognize that going into the show, I was always biased because I had already done some light research on her and the Arnold treason plot and knew about her historically, so I already absolutely detested Peggy Shippen before seeing Turn’s characterization of her, where yes she does get something of a sympathetic portrayal as many loyalists and redcoats do on this show (which is generally good because history is complicated, and it’s not all black and white, so I’m not saying that was a bad choice or anything!!), but I still don’t think it sugarcoated her enough for Peggy to be seen as a morally great character. 😅
Regarding how she totally manipulated Arnold into joining the British and basically ruining his own life, I want to preface this with YES I also hate Arnold and would punch him if I could, and YES I think Arnold was perfectly capable of ruining his own life by himself, but that being said… it is still pretty painful to watch, and if not for Arnold’s sake, than for the sake of everyone else who was negatively impacted by his treason. 💀 Honestly, there are some similarities I find between how dangerous Mary can be and how dangerous Peggy can be, only I think the key difference is that Mary uses it for “good” and Peggy uses it for “evil,” if you will. 😂 I don’t think Mary is some flawless goddess, and I get the argument that everything Peggy did was for Andre and how devoted she was to him… but I don’t think it’s a reach for me to say that with the exception of Andre, she may or may not sacrifice others’ happiness for her own. And have we forgotten the candlestick scene??? When she was threatening Cicero, talking to him about her family’s servants getting rewarded vs. getting horsewhipped and asking him which one he would prefer??? (Honestly, even if she did end up on their side since she wanted to help with the kidnapping, I think Abigail should have got to knock Peggy out with the candlestick just for fun, who knows if she’d even remember it after anyways 💀) Like some of Peggy’s insensitive words likely just happen since she’s a product of her time, and since she grew up as privileged and rich as she did (let’s not forget Andre himself noting how her family views themselves as above essentially everyone, even the king’s authority which you’d think would matter to loyalist-leaning parties at the time), but that scene rather rubs me the wrong way. 😬 And remember that time when her and Philomena were essentially fighting over Andre even after he was already DEAD LMAO, and just because Philomena was rude to her once she got her sent to fucking PRISON??? LIKE HELLO POOR PHILOMENA. 💀
As traumatizing as I’m sure it was for her to see Andre die, and as much as I genuinely pity her then, I don’t think that’s an excuse for THAT course of action. And further still, there’s nothing that makes her actions prior to his death quite ok either. I could go on and on about this all day y’all but I think you get the point lol Peggy Shippen is simply… someone I would never want to be around. 😀 Like, it genuinely scares me sometimes when I remember that, of course, there are manipulative people like her still out there now. 😀 Not exactly fun to consider.
There’s a great video touching on this general topic from Not Even Emily who is far funnier than me, but to repeat her point, “women [and therefore female characters] can be bad people, too, and that’s true equality, babe!” 😂 So if you simply like Peggy as something of a morally grey or even morally bad character then I won’t try to talk you out of that of course, and even if you do for whatever reason defend her, you’re still entitled to your opinion! I know for a fact I can’t talk everyone out of liking her and nor would I try since that’s just as controlling as she is lol, but I still have just wanted to get this out of my system for a while since I find it to be sort of odd that this topic isn’t discussed more lmao.
Thank you so much if you actually read this besties, it is appreciated 💕

okay i'm gonna word this as carefully as i can even though i know there's no way to say some of these things without being perceived like i'm coming from a place of bitterness and resentment. but i'm trying to be objective based on things i've observed and experienced in life.
one of the reasons i don't allow myself to engage with reactionary men and women (anymore) is because a lot of times it feels like i'm an alien in human skin when it comes to the ways both of them discuss womanhood.
on one end you have the men who seem to think all women live life on "rookie mode" we all command an army of simps to do our bidding without trying, go around fucking men in the multitudes, are inherently perceived as attractive, desireable and valuable and when you're a woman that doesn't have that particular experience it leaves you feeling a bit out of body.
a lot of men would be surprised to know that i have experienced life in a much similar way to them: long bouts of isolation and ostracism, constantly having to prove my worth, receiving very little emotional support or care, only being valued due to my utility to others and what i can provide, being degraded by both ends of the political spectrum because both sides hate black women and view them as bottom of the barrel. in the past i'd like to think this could potentially make us friends, instead my attempts to commiserate would often just make them hostile. because of that i now just turn away from men when they start off on one. i can no longer be bothered.
then you have the women. the ones who put forward their one-size-fits-all ideas of womanhood and weaponise it with feminist rhetoric. the ones who, like men, seem to assume that there are multiple candidates tripping over themselves to play the role of gallant knight and rescue you from the drudgery of gainful employment. the problem, therefore, is that feminism or capitalism or individualism or whatever other boogeyman of the week they wish to cite has tricked women into going their own way and eschewing this magnanimous chivalry to make a point.
again, no mention of the women for whom this was never even presented as an opportunity. who have decided to make their own way out of necessity because it's either do or die in these chaotic times we live in. then when you try and cling to the little positivity you receive by turning what was often used to ridicule you into a tool of empowerment ("girlboss") you are again the villain in these women's eyes. you're too capitalist-minded and masculine and hyperindependent. you need to learn to rest in your feminine, in your passivity, learn to receive (things you are not being offered to begin with) rather than deciding to get off your ass and go and get it yourself. "women wanting romance with men are valid!" they scream, as if they were the ones being derided as ugly, worthless, unfuckable cat ladies?
i cannot stress enough how deeply frustrating it is to be someone who is trying to find meaning and self-esteem and self-confidence in yourself in a society that's done everything it could to rip it from you and then have those same efforts curbed by the people who are supposed to be playing on your team. can you not see how in such a case a person might end up becoming a little militant, a little defensive? is it really our responsibility to get on our knees and beg for a crumb of empathy? for them to not fuck us over and vote away our rights so they can live out their white trad fantasies while launching black women into poverty and disenfranchisement? am i asking for too much?

I am SO pissed off.
My ex-boyfriend posted this on social media: “Men will sacrifice their everything for the happiness of a woman, but women will sacrifice men for their own happiness.”
This is beyond stupid. First of all, anything that claims “men are like this, women are like that” is sexist garbage and a huge red flag. Second, he didn’t sacrifice a single thing for me, let alone “everything,” so that’s ridiculous. And third, I didn’t “sacrifice” him either, I just decided my life was better off without his presence ruining it. What the fuck. I’m so glad I broke up with this guy.
When we were together, I told him I was depressed because of a difficult situation I was dealing with at work, and he told me to simply “stop feeling depressed,” which is not only mean and unsympathetic but also incredibly dumb. If it were that easy, then nobody would be depressed. I told him that he really offended me, and in response he made a bunch of excuses. Of course.
Somehow even worse than that - and both of these things made me break up with him - after we’d known each other for three months, and had been together for one month, I noticed he was no longer interested in learning more about me or asking me questions about myself. So I told him, “you know, I enjoy learning more about you, and I hope you also want to continue learning more about me,” and he said, “I know everything about you. I don’t need to know anything else.”
AFTER A FEW MONTHS?! No, you fucking do not know everything about me. What the fuck. It is unfathomable that anyone would think this, let alone say this to a person they claimed to care about.
I can only conclude one thing, which is that he didn’t really see me as a person, he saw me as an object. People are actually complicated and multidimensional, and getting to know somebody takes a long time. Not to mention, if you’re soooooo in love with me, you should WANT to get to know me, you would WANT to ask me about my life and my thoughts and my interests. But I guess not.
The thing is, some men view women as objects in the sense that they view them as lesser. But this guy, this guy slipped under the radar because he actually thought I was better than him in every way. But he put me on a pedestal so much that he apparently decided I didn’t need anything from him, not even sympathy or kindness or, like, being interested in me as a person?
This makes me froth at the mouth with rage because when we got together he actually asked me what I want out of a relationship and I said, “Understanding.” And then this pathetic excuse for a man made the minimal effort to get to know me AND THEN CONCLUDED that he knew everything.
What a disgusting attitude to have towards anyone. “I know everything about you. I don’t need to know anything else.” Keep in mind, he said that while fully believing that he was in love with me, and then acted surprised when I was hurt. This is NOT the kind of thing you say to someone you love.
I have to laugh: “Women will sacrifice men for their own happiness.” Yeah, genius, if you’re not making me happy, why the fuck would I keep you in my life?

Some Black women will observe that others aren't fair to us and then come to the conclusion that any Black woman that so much as thinks or simply has a moral objection to something is being used but all the things they care about, thats not them being a mule. There are many Black women that do not know how to form connections or have solidarity without defaulting to muledom and sacrifice and there's a tragic list of Black women murdered and abused by people who were meant to be allies or peers- that's a fact but some employ that very real concern to diswage even small levels empathy about they dont see as related to Black women or happening in general. I don't see how it's beneficial to encourage women to think small, not to intellectually consider something or be informed.
Something connected with thinking like that is when some Black women say things about Black female oppression that encourages a type of small view of the world that if they knew X women in X country experience something similar, it wouldn't make them feel like we're alone and understand how misogyny shapes our experiences. Even if a Black woman wishes to focus on Black women only, she isn't helped by knowing less about the world.
If your only objection are Black women being used and abused, or are you using legitimate concerns about how political Black women are dehumanised to get them to be carbon copies of you and your view of the world ? This typically ends up with drifting more right leaning or a ' nothing matters' attitude as if right leaning politics or apathy are better for us because many left leaning people are very racist and misogynistic.
" why do you care about X?" I can't think it's wrong ? Can you get out my pussy
If my thoughts about the world were dependent on being liked, I wouldn't believe that Black women as a group deserve better because many Black women are male focused, hostile to thinking about misogyny and have an unhealthy obsession with religion. We don't like us either. Having principles isn't for fun.
Some of you act like if a Black woman simply thinks or expresses something, she's doing guerilla warfare with her bare hands. She's on her phone, love. You can advocate for caution and caring for ourselves differently, if that's even the only intention ( its not )
#blah#black women#should black women think about how they use their energy? yes#but the way some of you take this to encourage women not to think about the world we live in...yuck

HSM Slave fic (or a look into Josefina’s depraved mind while she sleeps)
Alternate New Mexico, alternate 1924
I woke up inside a steel cage, on the hot floor, sweating. A large crowd gathered around the area, looking at, not just me, but others. I looked to see there were guards dressed in Blue and black. I heard a bellowing voice “Alright! Ladies and Gentlemen! Welcome to the Albuquerque Slave Auction!” So that’s what this is.
A voice next to me whispered “is this your first time” I looked to my side to see a small timid girl about my age with curly hair and small breasts “b-being sold, I mean” I turn to her and try to read her collar “Kelsi, my family tried to escape Cuba when the Spanish left and these people followed us and my mother’s side have all been sold for two generations and broken up … they say for Treason. Kelsi looked at me sternly “your parents were treasonous, they tried to overturn the American puppet republic in Cuba during the Buchanan years, when he decided to de-racialise slavery. But that wasn’t my question” I stuttered trying to remember “I think this is my first time, Mistress discovered I love the sexual aspect of slavery, but only ever with other girls, so she sent me here, I guess” Kelsi gasped “ you don’t just tolerate being a sex object, you like it? Nasty! To be fair, I’m being sold with the girls too soooo…”
The voice bellowed out “and now to introduce the girls, a fine specimen for the ladies and a fantastic toy for yourself and others, Specimen J4168” suddenly a big hand grabbed my chains and pulled me out onstage before pushing me, completely naked and blushing to my knees. I tuned out the man listing off how responsive and obedient I was as well as the sale instead staring into the crowd, who would own me next, who could it be…
“Sold to Miss Evans! The Princess of a luxury hotel chain empire across the American West” the man bellowed out again before I got led offstage and into their finishing room
The guard looked at my file “right Miss… oh goodness, Josefina Williams-Velasquez? The granddaughter of the treasonous family in Cuba?” I nodded, He chuckled “first sale must have been scary for you, especially being brought just for sex” I gulped some water “yes sir” I pucker for some lipstick and he put some Ruby on me “can I have the slave girl blouse please” I enquire to his shock “already a good girl?”
“Mistress and I practiced in her living room” I answered making sure to bow when I received the clothes, mattress and blankets. He then put a leather biting gag in my mouth and a blindfold over my eyes before leading me out to my new owner
***
When I was unblindfolded and ungagged I found myself sat on the ground waiting for something “Mistress…” I started before being silenced immediately “shut it slave, I know this station looks empty but that’s because it is an employees and management only train service. I must have looked cute because later she said, “fine, I’m Mistress Sharpay, you’re going to be the hotel’s official pet and human sex toy, your job is to be pretty and have lots of sex, that’s it, that’s your job slave” I asked her “Mistress, how am I going to be able to stop people falling pregnant”
“Girl, you’re not a boy, that’s not possible and our clients are mostly women”
“Mistress I have a penis” she breathed in and huffed “we have dragonfruit syrup” and swiftly changed the subject “are you on any medications I should know about?” I sorted through my bag and found a box labelled “Isolate Estriol” “yes mistress, this”
“Only that?”
“And some medicinal Red Wine for Blood Pressure and Pepsi for staying energised and for my gut”
At that point a belching, coal rolling train came into view and Sharpay tugged at me to get on

I'm really glad for all the love you've put into w359 fanworks. every time I see you post about it, my heart glows a little.
I'd originally felt that way while listening to the show, and your interpretation & vision feels so tightly knit to the source material. you even go farther in your explicit discussions about hera, her autonomy, her emotional depth, her treatment by other characters, and her arc as a trans allegory
totally understand why you might feel embarrassed, but I wanted you to know: thank you 💜
oh, that's so sweet of you to say!! i'm honored you think so.
i genuinely think there's a case to be made that eiffel/hera is as canon as the parameters for romance in wolf 359 allow it to be. like: gabriel urbina's policy was always "never confirm or deny 'on-screen' romance unless absolutely necessary" and from the AMAs we know they at least discussed it with regard to eiffel and hera, though we'll never know how that conversation went. it's not really a secret that sarah shachat and zach valenti, at least, viewed it that way. i still think about zach saying (paraphrased) that he thinks his non-answer is an answer, because if he didn't ship them, he could just say so.
and that's kind of how i feel about eiffel/hera within canon. like. anybody at all familiar with shows the wolf 359 writers like (especially things like btvs and farscape) can tell you there are plenty of scenes that mirror and meta-textually reference scenes from other shows. both gabriel urbina and sarah shachat were huge fans of the new doctor who, and whatever you believe the intent was, i find it hard to believe they didn't at least know they were evoking "if it's my last chance to say it, rose tyler, i-" with "and hera. hera, i-" it's what isn't said, the fact it has to be left unsaid, that speaks the loudest.
and anyway, talking about hera and romance / sexuality is especially interesting to me because it's not a given for her. it's not assumed to be something she should want or can have, and the way that intersects with her canon disability and with readings of her as a trans woman re: autonomy and desirability is very interesting (and very personal) to me, especially in the broader context of stories about AI women. but that's a topic for another post.
it's not a new observation by any means, but i think there can be a tendency to treat romance as separate from character analysis, and that's always sat poorly with me. romance isn't unique in either a good or a bad way, it's just... one type of relationship people can have. i think a lot about the unique approach wolf 359 has to romance because, while i understand why a lot of people would find the lack of romantic subplots refreshing, the characters aren't written to be intentionally disinterested in sex or romance (in some cases, textually... the opposite, even), so much as the writing carefully skirts around it. and... i don't know! there's something fascinating there.
obviously, i think you can recognize what's important about eiffel and hera's relationship (that it's the most equal one hera has ever had, that he has no real hierarchy over her or expectations for her other than companionship, how they share values and mutually support each other, etc.) without needing that to be romantic. and i think you can even acknowledge there's some degree of romantic intent without being invested like i am or "shipping" them. but i do think there's some intent there, and i think the the themes of the show can be expanded in some interesting ways to explore that beyond the intentional ambiguity of it. if you want to.
i would also never deny having an emotional bias here!! complete objectivity is never possible because we always bring parts of ourselves to our interpretations of art, and that's only amplified by how close to my heart wolf 359 is as a story. but i do really want to communicate, to the best of my ability, how much love i have for the show and how much thought i put into it. and i definitely don't mind being known for my love of eiffel/hera; they're my favorite characters from anything ever, both individually and together. but i do get kinda embarrassed when i talk about them too much, because it's not that i don't have plenty of thoughts about every other character and aspect of the show, it's just... that they are close to my heart in a particular way. anyway. i really appreciate it, thank you!!
#this still isn't worded as well as i'd like but i can't rework it any shorter without losing something. i hope it's clear enough what i mean#like in my mind eiffel/hera is functionally a canon romance but an unresolved one and i find that very compelling#fwiw i do not think gabriel urbina perceives it that way (nor would he ever say even if he did) but like. in the context wolf 359 created#i am sure he was aware of how that would come across.#anyway. remember how that one track on the ost used to be named 'eiffel and hera' and gabriel described it as the show's tenderness theme#and said their relationship became what that song guided his understanding of it to be. beats my head against the wall.#... you just got a bunch of thoughts that were on my mind and i apologize but i do appreciate it very very much#this was such a kind thing for you to say#asks
