Chapter 198: Blue
Characters: Ruby, Law, Ikkaku Rating: T Warnings: Language, adult situations with adult solutions, anxiety Notes: Sorry for such a long wait. I've been writing a lot of stuff recently, but it's all been post canon stuff. Speaking of, can you believe people honestly think that Law is going to die?!
~~~~~
Ruby woke up to an empty bed, which was very normal. She was used to her boyfriend waking up before her and not being a total dick and letting her sleep. She snuggled into the covers further, letting the warmth from them take her. She was half-way asleep again when she heard the door open.
“Alright, I let you sleep in enough. Time to be an adult.” She heard Law say in his grumpy tone.
“But Laaaaaw,” she whined. He ripped the blankets off of her. “Noooooo!”
“Get up, brat.”
Ruby sat up and stretched. He didn’t have to be so mean. He knew that she slept naked and that the sub was cold. She relaxed and stared at him and his raised right brow. She opened her arms and grinned widely at him.
“Kiss.”
“No. Get dressed.”
She pouted. “Don’t be so grumpy. Kiss me.”
Law scoffed and leaned down to kiss her. “There, now get dressed and do your job.”
Ruby wrapped her arms around his neck and pulled him onto the bed. He groaned annoyed but didn’t move. “But I’ve got a black eye and bruised knuckles, you should let me be lazy.”
“No.”
“Don’t be so gruuuumpyyyyy.”
Law groaned. “You’re like this too early in the morning,” he complained. “Come on. Clione made pancakes.”
“Oh fuck!” She exclaimed and jumped out of bed. “Pancake time.”
Law watched with a half amused gaze as she flitted around the room throwing on some shorts and a black tank top. She slipped into her fuzzy slippers and threw her hair into a big, poofy bun.
“Let’s go, loser.” She grabbed his hand and dragged him along. She heard Law sigh but he held onto her hand all the same.
He tugged on her arm and she stopped, turning to look at him in curiosity. He pulled her towards him and kissed her forehead. Ruby smiled warmly and hugged him happily. He kissed her forehead again. She tilted her head up and they kissed chastely.
Her heart felt light. It was like she was floating on air. She was so happy to have him in her arms. He nuzzled her nose and she didn’t even flinch when he brushed against the bruising on her eye and cheek.
“Sorry you have a black eye and bruised knuckles.”
“I wouldn’t be here today if that stuff had ever stopped me.”
He made a noise in agreement and hugged her. “Thanks.”
“You’re welcome, mo chuisle. I’ll always fight for you and protect you. You are my captain after all.”
“That’s why?” He raised his brow. “Not because we’re a couple and you love me?”
“Nope.” She gave him a toothy grin. “Come on. You being mushy is denying me my pancakes.”
“Nope,” he said her words back to her. “You gotta deal with it.”
“Weren’t you the one dragging me out of bed?” She didn’t turn away when he leaned in and kissed her again. Oh, and she could kiss him all day. She was lost in his lips; in his arms; in his scent.
She felt someone smack the back of her head and yelped.
“It’s too early,” Ikkaku groused. “Don’t you guys have a room for that?”
Ruby groaned and rubbed the back of her head. “Fine,” she huffed. She grabbed Law’s hand and started to pull him along again. “Pancake time.”
The three of them made their way to the mess. Law and Ruby sat down next to each other while Ikkaku sat across from them. Ruby sat, with her huge stack of 4 pancakes, and happily dug in.
Law covered his mouth and Ikkaku grinned at her. Ruby looked up curiously. “What?”
“You’re so cute, Ruby.” Ikkaku leaned in and pinched her cheek. “Also, that’s a lot of food for you. Three bacon, four pancake, many egg.”
“Bro, I have been so hungry as of late.”
“You were just in a huge fist fight. You probably still need to recover from that.”
“Mmm yeah. I conked out last night.” Ruby shoved some eggs in her mouth. She looked over to Law who was sipping his coffee causally. She smiled and returned to her meal. “It will be nice to be in the greenhouse today. It’s going to be a day of just picking the produce and putting them in crates.”
“That’ll be good.”
“Mmhmm.”
Ikkaku and Ruby made small talk while Law drank his coffee and occasionally rubbed Ruby’s knee. It was a good morning. She ate until she was full and happily relaxed around her nakama.
She was in her greenhouse, picking her strawberries and absolutely snacking on them when her stomach started to cramp. She groaned and sat in one of her chairs and rubbed her stomach.
“I hope I didn’t eat too much, ugh.” She let out a breath and closed her eyes, leaning into the chair. She opened her eyes when the door opened.
“Aren’t you supposed to be picking strawberries?” She heard Law’s gruff voice.
“My stomach just started to cramp real bad.”
“Aren’t you supposed to be starting your menstrual cycle this week?”
“Uhhhhh,” she looked over to him. “Why do you know that?”
“Why wouldn’t I know that?”
Ruby rolled her eyes. “Lemme check the calendar.” She stood up and walked over to her messy, tiny desk. She felt around for her dirt covered calendar and looked at it. She stared at it, starting to frown. “It was supposed to be last week.”
“Well, being late can happen. I wouldn’t worry about it.” Law said very doctorly and matter-of-factly. Ruby sighed and looked at him with a frown. “Do you want to take a test?”
“Yes.”
“Alright, come on. I assure you it will be fine, though.”
“Humor me.”
“I said I would, come on.” He said with an annoyed sigh. Ruby walked up to him and nervously took his hand. He relaxed and leaned in and kissed her temple. “It’ll be okay.”
She nodded and let him lead her to the clinic. She nervously fidgeted as he pulled out a sample cup. He handed it to her with an expectant raised brow.
“I expect you know what to do by now.”
“Yeah, yeah,” she mumbled as she walked away and into the bathroom.
She let out a large, anxious sigh. She’s never had to do this with him before. She never thought she would. Although, his obvious confidence in the matter made it seem like it was fine. And, let’s be real, he was probably right and she was just being paranoid. However, if it was what it was she wanted it taken care of immediately. She didn’t want anything to do with anything. She just wanted to go pick strawberries while Law’s smooth voice talked to her while he momentarily ignored his duties.
She squeezed her eyes shut to stop the tears. This wasn’t supposed to happen. She’s cleaned up now. She was safe. She was healthy. This wasn't supposed to happen. She took a deep breath, barely holding back her sob. She closed her eyes and counted back from 10. She straightened her back and washed her hands. She made sure to make it look like she wasn’t crying as she checked herself one last time in the mirror.
She walked back into the clinic, her sample cup in her hand. She handed it to Law and he took it casually. He set it down on the table and leaned in and kissed her forehead.
“You don’t need to cry over this, we’ll take care of it.”
Of course he knew. He always knew.
They sat on the bed in the middle of the room while the machine ran it’s test. “Let’s not leave it up to an unreliable stick.” He said, annoyed that she would even consider something like that. Ruby had grabbed his hand and was playing with it, trying to ignore her anxiety. He stopped her and firmly held her hand.
“Relax,” he told her. He didn’t care. No. It’s not even that he didn’t care, he knew. He knew there was nothing wrong and that she was just worrying herself to death. He wasn’t nervous, at most he was a little annoyed that she pulled him away to deal with her anxiety. There was not a single ounce of doubt flowing through his veins and he didn’t hide that he knew he was right.
The machine beeped and Law stood up. He walked over to the machine and tapped a couple keys. He didn’t look at her when he said, “negative.”
Ruby collapsed onto the bed and let out a relieved sigh. She felt tears in her eyes again and fought them back. She heard the click of Law’s shoes as he walked over and behind her. She opened her eyes and watched him stare at her.
“Why were you so anxious? You’ve been through this before in a less safe environment.”
She hesitated. She took a breath. “I just…” she sighed. “I thought I was over this kinda stuff.”
“It was negative, babe.”
“I know. And it’s not like you would throw me off the ship.”
“Of course.” He looked offended that it was even brought up. “Look, if you’re really that anxious about it I can make you a pill. Vasectomies are almost 100% effective. You will never get pregnant.” Ruby frowned and sat back up. She pouted and Law sighed. He wrapped his arms around her from behind, laying his chin on her head. “You’ve been under some stress recently, that’s probably why you are late. You were eating more because you were recently in a couple of fights. You were getting stomach cramps because you’re about to start your menstrual cycle. You are okay and everything is normal.” Ruby sighed and leaned back into him. “Sorry that I’m not being empathetic enough.”
Ruby shrugged. “You have, like, zero empathy so that doesn’t surprise me.”
“Then sympathy. Compassion?”
“It’s fine. I need your rationality anyway.” She rubbed his arms. She took a deep breath and closed her eyes, letting his presence relax her. “Will you massage my feet later tonight?”
“Maybe. If you finish picking your strawberries.”
“Slave driver,” she muttered, fingering his hands.
“Yep.” He pulled away from her and she pouted. Ruby took a deep breath and hopped off of the bed. She adjusted her top and sighed.
“I’m gonna go back to work.”
“Good,” Law said with a little relief in his tone. He was probably feeling better that she wasn’t letting her anxiety take over. “I’ll see you at dinner.”
“Yep.”
Ruby spent the next few hours picking strawberries, like her original plan for the day was. Ikkaku came by to chat and had no idea what happened, and Ruby wanted to keep it like that for now. Yes, Ruby was fine now, but she was still relaxing from churning in her stomach from before.
She didn’t see Law again until dinner, where they were fed a hearty soup and soda bread (everyone’s favorite captain not eating the bread). She was mopping up the last of her soup with her bread, still a bit hungry and thinking about going back for seconds.
“Eat,” Law said. “You need more calories if you’re getting hungry more often.”
“I know,” she said and finished off the rest of her bread. She stood up and sighed. “My ass is going to get fat.”
“How is that a bad thing?” Law grinned when she rolled her eyes. “Do you care?”
“Not really, no,” she shrugged and walked into the kitchen, getting more soup and bread. She ate her meal, feeling a bit nostalgic of her long forgotten memories of a kid. Her mind started drifting into thought of her as a kid. What a terrible, troublesome child she was. Any kids of hers would be nightmares. Any kids of Law’s would be nightmares. Yikes. Their kids would be terrible, terrible children. She sighed wistfully. Thank god she wasn’t pregnant.
She leaned in and kissed Law’s cheek. He gave her a funny look, like why in the hell was she being so blatantly affectionate around people at the dinner table. She just grinned at him. So absofuckinglutely glad she was not pregnant.
“You’re in a much better mood than earlier,” Law commented as he massaged her feet.
“It’s because I started to think about us as parents.”
Law stopped immediately and stared at her like he saw a ghost. “Y-You’re not thinking of…”
“No!” She laughed. “I was thinking how any kids of ours would be monsters and how we would be terrible parents!”
“You would be such a bitch when pregnant.”
“I know!”
Law gave her a tired smile. He leaned up and captured her lips in an obviously relieved kiss. “I love you. I’m glad you’re feeling better.”
“Me too. Eating helped.”
“It’s amazing what food and a nap will do.”
Ruby grinned and kissed him again. “Alright, continue with the massage. My feet hurt.” Law rolled his eyes but continued.
She was so happy. She could continue her life on the sea by his side. She could continue to be with Ikkaku and her Heart Pirates. She was so so so happy to be childfree and with her nakama and on the sea. She had her lover; she had her nakama; and she’ll never need anything more.
