Last song I listened to: “Sometime We’ll Understand” from the Lamb of God Easter oratorio by Rob Gardner. With the season and driving by a bunch of churches with Easter signs, I got real nostalgic for Easter music because there are so many great pieces. And Lamb of God holds a lot of memories for me because my dad was the lead cellist for the local production for several years, and I even got to take part one year. And it is just soooo musically tasty and I was just filled with energy listening to it yesterday. The CHOIR, the SOLOISTS, the SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA!!! If you remember me expressing my love for French horns a few weeks ago, Lamb of God played no small part in establishing this opinion. If you don’t mind Christian hymns, I highly recommend checking it out, and all of Rob Gardner’s work because he is truly one of the goats.

Last book I read: I’ve kinda started and stopped a few books recently, not for any particular reason just… idk. So instead I’m gonna plug a fic I’ve been keeping up with that published its final chapter last night: Judgement & Justice! It is such a fascinating and engaging work that explores the details of legally condemning Ikithon, the ways that the law can fail anyone, how even doing something you believe is right can be incredibly traumatizing. As one of the tags says, “the mundane horrors of the criminal justice system”. So good. I highly recommend.

Last film I watched: ummmm, yesterday I saw like 30 minutes of Wish after the school field trip bc the teacher was so kind and said, “nope. interpreters are out of commission. we’re watching a movie.” The music didn’t appeal to me too much, which sucks bc I LOVE Ariana DeBose’s voice. But I will say that the special effect art was sick and some of the character designs are cute!

Last TV series: uhhhh idk I watch a lot of YouTube. Drawfee, Zelda randomizers, that kinda stuff. and critrole obv lol :)

Last thing I googled: “peafowl”. I love birds and will infodump about them and I wanted to show my coworker how different peahens are to peacocks, and most people have no idea they’re called anything but peacocks.

Last thing I ate: ritz crackers and nutella. It’s a combination I wouldn’t have put together of my own accord, but in eighth grade, my friend brought some into history class and convinced me to try it and I’ve been sold ever since.

Sweet, savory, or spicy: Yes. However, savory and spicy go well together, but sweet doesn’t go with either. I have a massive sweet tooth and my mom raised me to have high standards for desserts, so when I have sweets, I want them to be to my taste. I like spicy food and I have a decent spice tolerance. It used to be higher but either adulthood or my anxiety meds reduced it rip :’(

Amount of sleep: ummmm about 6 hours? I should probably be getting more, but unfortunately sleep is boring.

Currently reading: The Thief by Megan Whalen Turner. I’m about halfway through, and it’s pretty enjoyable, but I hear it’s got a good twist later on so I’m excited.

My particular brand of flawed human being loves the arc of Florida!!!-Guilty As Sin?-Who's Afraid Of Little Old Me? like It's a tasty trilogy, Running away as as solution, fantasy as a solution, just losing it and being scary as a solution (not proudly). Their not great habits to have but I reckonise it in myself.

!!!!!! Anon!!! Yes!!! It takes sooo much self awareness and vulnerability to recognize these things in ourselves!! And I totally feel you here, the not great habits we find ourselves engaging in, and the way we sometimes… revel in them. I’m thinking about what my therapist would say if I talked about that arc (love left me like this and I don’t want to exist so take me to Florida!! -> these fatal fantasies/am I allowed to cry -> so tell me.. they didn’t do it to hurt me, but what if they did??? I wanna snarl and show you just how disturbed this has made me!!!!) and I think my therapist would encourage me to honor those emotions. What do they tell me? And I think that’s exactly what Taylor has done on the entire album (anthology included). She’s rotating these behaviors and reactions and triggers in her mind and wondering about where they come from. What wounds are still bleeding? Maybe the solution to feeling trapped and worthless IS to escape rather than shrinking yourself into a shell of who you are (there’s escape in escaping). Maybe the solution to dismantling an entire religious worship of a relationship IS to sin and see how it feels. Maybe the solution to feeling like everyone wants to hurt you is to recognize that some people DO want to do that!! And you have every right to feel RAGE about it!!! Those three songs in that order are sooo powerful and I love that you pointed it out because now I can’t stop thinking about it!! It’s the journey from self-loathing to self-respect and it’s a messy fucking journey and sometimes we might hurt other people on our path back to ourselves. But that doesn’t make us bad to be feeling upset. It’s just so complicated!! And TTPD explores territory I never expected Taylor to willingly share with us and it is such a gift that she went there! I think a lot of people struggle to express anger and fear (especially if we’ve crafted a self image/worth based on being “nice” and “reasonable”) so the way that Taylor has leaned into those emotions and explored them, given them a voice, given herself permission to be Ugly and Wrong, it’s just soooo powerful 😭

❧ it's a given that madara knows you're capable—you're his dependable producer, after all! that's why he doesn't question it when you give such detailed advice during his practices. project his voice a bit more? make better use of the space on the stage? you got it, producer—it makes a lot of sense when you point it out like that. you've been working with idols for quite a while, after all, and you've been producing him fairly often, so it comes off as natural to him that you'd be in tune with these sorts of things, even if you weren't a performer yourself.

❧ it goes on like this. and on, and on, and on—and then he hears your voice on the radio? no, no, madara corrects himself, it's that new single by that up-and-coming idol, isn't it? it's odd, though, how similar they sound to you; maybe it'd be a funny conversation starter! hey, producer, you'll never guess whose new song i just heard...

❧ however you react—subtly trying to goad madara into telling you his thoughts on the song, or coolly brushing it off—he's not exactly dense. just like you've become attuned to his own mannerisms, enough to point out little ways he can utilize them in shows, he's caught onto your little habits as well! when he hears you hum under your breath he can tell which notes you have trouble with, and knows from the way you call out for him just how you project your voice. the similarities are too strong for him to just brush it off as coincidence!

❧ he'll definitely bring it up properly, at some point! he won't lay it on too thick, in case you'd be uncomfortable or on the off chance he's wrong. "i'd love to collaborate with you, producer!" he'd say, and when your eyebrows shoot upwards, he'd continue: "you know, as your little alter ego." of course, madara assures you that he's taken a vow of silence with regards to your idol career—your secret is safe with him!

❧ it invokes an odd sense of closeness with you, somehow, but he supposes accidentally stumbling upon secrets can do that to people. madara's much more insistent that you don't overwork yourself, since he's seen firsthand how much you take on as his producer alone, not to mention your own idol practice—he's been there! he is currently there! it's tiring, and it wouldn't be good for anyone to overexert yourself.

❧ given some time, it's not too improbable for you two to work on a collaboration together... maybe next time you two are out together, you'll hear both of your voices singing together over the radio this time~

Highlights from Aftershock Day 1!

First of all, here's the bands I saw: Vended, Crown The Empire, Nothing More, Stone Temple Pilots, Evanescence, and Slipknot!

Vended was really cool! They were a great band to start the festival with. I listened to their entire discography (which isn't very long) prior to seeing them, and really loved what I was hearing! I initally took interest because I'm a huge Slipknot fan, and Griffin Taylor (Vended's singer) is Corey Taylor's son. Similar voices, but definitely a unique band! Lots of energy, they sounded great, and the band put on a good show!

Crown The Empire was fun! I loved being in that crowd, even though it was soooo hot. At one point, the singer requested that people pass up alcohol or weed to the stage, and people complied! Someone threw up a joint, which the band took turns smoking. Unfortunately, in the middle of a song, someone threw up a glass vodka bottle and it hit the singer right in the crotch. 😬 He was surprisingly able to continue the song. I sincerely hope he's okay, but the band was great to watch! They're a recent discovery for me, so I'm looking forward to listening to them more.

I was SO EXCITED to see Nothing More! I've been wanting to see them live since 2017, so that set was a moment in the making for me. They rocked so hard! I felt like death in that crowd, but it was so worth it!! They played during the hottest part of the day, when it was about 94°F/34°C. Everyone was jumping and moving, so that lead to a very hot and sweaty crowd. I was mostly unaffected by the mosh pit, but did have a crowd surfer fall on me 🙃. My back hurt for the remainder of the evening, but I'm fine now. My friend got kicked in the head, and had a headache for a while as well. Still such a great experience. The band was entertaining to watch, and did a lot for us, despite also clearly being affected by the heat.

We had a break between Nothing More and Stone Temple Pilots. I got this amazing Tropical Lemonade smoothie. I had it a few years ago, and had been dreaming of it since lol. So tasty, and very necessary as the heat + sweat was depleting my energy. We sat for a minute before heading over to STP.

Stone Temple Pilots were incredible!! I saw them a few years ago, but admittedly didn't know their music well back then. I got hooked after seeing them perform the first time. This time, my friend and I got to the barrier without difficulties, and were there the entire set. I was singing along to every word, and had a blast. It was so much fun!! The singer touched my hand twice, and at one point was being held up by the crowd within reach of me!! The bassist made eye contact with me, and pointed at me once while I was headbanging and screaming lyrics. So cool! The band killed it like I expected them to.

Immediately after STP was Evanescence. We had to get to the stage as quickly as possible, because those were our only sets without a break between. My friend was determined to get close for them. My dad helped lead us through the crowd when we got to the stage, but we were still pretty far back. Every time people shifted and any space opened up, my friend and I kept moving up. We were able to get really close by the end! Evanescence was amazing!! Amy Lee is a godess. Her voice is incredible. Just killer! She's such a good performer!! I couldn't keep my eyes off her. I knew to expect great things, but was still blown away.

After Evanescence, we had a full hour before Slipknot. We opted to stay at the stage to wait that way we could ensure good spots for Slipknot. This meant that we missed out on Rob Zombie's set, but I've seen him before, my dad has seen him twice, and we still got to see him on the screens. It was actually pretty fun hearing my crowd singing along to Rob Zombie. Hearing Dragula while in a large group is always a good time. The wait for Slipknot was hot, sweaty, and not very pleasant. Though we had space initally, that didn't last. Tons of people pushed their way up to get closer for them. Everyone was really squished, and I kept getting my hair pulled. Also for a while there was this rude woman next to me. She shoved her way up, then proceeded to complain about teenagers being in the crowd, and made a bunch of gatekeeping comments. She also talked smack about holding one's own in a pit. I didn't feel bad for a second when I saw her get swept away in the first mosh pit. 🤷‍♀️

Slipknot was awesome!! This was my second time seeing them. Like I said, we had close spots. That did not last. People rushed forward and mosh pits formed as soon as the first song began. My friend and I got crushed between people. My dad was slightly separated from us, and ended up pushing his way to us so he could pull us out. Not the scariest pit situation I've been in, but that clearly wasn't going to be a safe place for us. We ended up relocated a bit to the side and slightly further back. It was still a really good view!! I had total view of the screens the entire time, and full view of the stage for about 80% of the set. Slipknot brought the energy!! I was jumping and screaming so much. I'm shocked I didn't give myself a headache from how violently I was headbanging or lose my voice from screaming. Corey Taylor is an excellent front man. He was so engaging with us, and totally completed the experience. Slipknot is a band I would happily see live again.

Overall, it was an exhausting but amazing day! We left the house at 11:30 am and didn't get home until after 11:00 pm. Very long day, but so worth it. My entire body is still a bit tired, but we aren't leaving today for about 3 more hours, so I'm resting up! Definitely going to continue chugging water to ensure I don't get dehydrated. I truly felt awful for a minute there yesterday evening before I had time to sit and eat. This is the hottest Aftershock I've attended, so the heat threw everyone a bit off. I'm excited for the day ahead today!!

What attracts me most about Kanato is his appearance mostly!! And I do not say that is the cute and his childish face, but for his aesthetics! His style, clothes, accessories, and well the iconic purple hair😩😩💜💜

Since I was a child I was extremely attracted by the purple color, a good example are the barbie movies where I was NEVER Barbie herself but her FRIEND in a purple dress KSKSKKS Not just on the barbie which I was a fan of, but anywhere where there was a character in purple I already looooved im just a weak for the purple color. Movies, animes, mangas, animations, cartoons: It was always purple.

woodland creatures tour - day 8 (falls church)

finally got around to starting the final journal. life picks back up so quickly for me when i return from going anywhere, really, so it’s hard to stick to little projects like this. but i probably could have benefited from writing this sooner after the actual last day of tour haha. it’s funny how we only leave for a week or so but it feels like our lives shift so drastically during that time. it really does take time to snap back into reality and accept normalcy.

after a good night of bullshitting until super late (we tried to put on hot ones around 2:00 am but all passed out shortly after) we grabbed coffee and breakfast at coffeeology (i THINK that’s the name) in greensboro. we stopped at a shop literally across the street from the venue we played last year, new york pizza. seeing that place again reminded us of playing to literally our tourmates destination dimension and maybe like 3 other people in the room, versus the couple dozen we played to last night. the main band that played the gig that night literally sat outside the entire show with their friends and only came inside for when they had to play. it was disheartening, to say the least. this time, we didn’t play to a crowd that was there for us, but we played to so many more people who actually stayed inside to watch us. 

i wish i could remember this drive, i didn’t have any work to do so i think this was the day i bought untitled goose game and i was playing it a little bit haha. we listened to some music and just enjoyed the trek to our last gig on this run. of course, we started to hit traffic as we approached falls church, which is in the DC area for anyone not familiar. however, we were still making okay time. we could make a detour to drop our bags at the hotel in vienna, get food, and then run our dual band cover of uneasy hearts with pulses. forgot to mention this in the jacksonville journal lmao, i approached kevin with this idea for the last show of tour super casually and we did end up deciding as a whole to go through with it! 

the hotel in vienna was such a strange spot, but it was kind of cool? we stayed at the vienna wolf trap hotel hahaha. all of the decor was SO DATED but it was still pretty okay. the guy at the desk was nice, we somehow got on the topic that we were a band on tour rand he gave us late check-in for free! ended up not needing it. but it’s the thought that counts haha. we arrive to the venue and jaime’s girlfriend rebecca is there to greet us :’) poor girl drove their RV all the way down to virginia alone, and that thing drives slowly. but then that meant jaime could ride back up to jersey with her which was good. 

it is insane how at home we feel at falls church. i guess everyone south of maryland is just way fucking cooler than the northeast lmao, but it’s like pulling up to play somewhere at home in jersey and running into old friends. i can’t get over that we have that in a state hundreds of miles from home. it was good to see familiar faces and be back at the vfw. our friends’ band to michigan, with love was also on the gig, and our newer friends in science penguin joined us on the show as well! it was an all-around homie fest. i rolled up to the venue with the remainder of the trulys i purchased the night before, and shoved the box in the fridge haha. i was ready to just chillll. 

because we have played here a handful of times, it is also now tradition to walk across the parking lot and go get korean fried chicken at the restaurant next door. it fucking sucks, we always arrive just in time to eat before doors and i normally can’t eat jack shit because of fried/spicy food being horrible for my voice. i ordered bibimbap and then 12 wings to go, for after the show lmao. or a snack after we play!! but i ended up forgetting to FUCKING eat them AND they just sat out overnight in the van so they were toast. goddamnit. i think the restaurant is literally just called bbq fried chicken, the way they fry their chicken is just perfect. the sauces are all delicious and everything besides that on the menu is also tasty. 

i wanted so badly to break my last set of tour curse. it’s definitely a self-imposed, silly, superstitious thing, but my last set of tour iS ALWAYS HOT GARBAGE. i always for sure mess up. and this was probably the best last set of tour i’ve had but still not my best performance all of tour haha. i got lost the bridge of murder mountain and couldn’t hear my bandmates for some reason? fucking embarrassing but!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i cannot stress enough how much fun it was. it truly was. fucking, we’re about to play pixelated and i’m trying to give my SHPIEL about not being a JERK musician and i hear the sounds of “smooth” by carlos santana featuring rob thomas faintly playing through my in-ears. i rip them off and i’m like, what the fuck is going on LMAO. surprise, the pulses. gang were behind it, and tyler, taylor and kevin come dancing up to the stage. i was DEAD. we never do last day of tour pranks so we were fuuuully unprepared hahaha. it was so funny. my meme now takes on a whole new meaning!! 

most importantly this show felt like such a fun celebration of tour. pulses., as they did all tour, hyped us up during almost every song and went off for synapse fires. we are too fucking lucky to have them as friends. they really helped make every set and every show feel worth the hours of travel and sometimes stress. to look out and see their faces in the crowd and singing the words uplifted us each night. it’s unfair that we live so far apart. it’s like how they say your soulmate could be literally anywhere in the world but you won’t know until you go look??? it’s like that but with finding supportive friends. i’m not sure if we’ve stressed this enough but this tour gave us strength to keep going as musicians, due in part to their friendship. we always joked like how the fuck we’re supposed to just go on not playing shows together or seeing each other all the time but it really does suck lmao. i was in my feelings in both a good and bad way, soooo i immediately scurried off the stage to go grab a truly the second we were done HAHA

it’s always so sad to watch your friends play their last set of tour, too. well moreso bittersweet! but you know that it’ll be your last time seeing them play for a while. i enjoyed every single minute. i love watching them play hometown shows, too. halfway through we jumped on stage to do the uneasy hearts cover, completely unrehearsed, and i’d say we did a pretty damn good job. such a fun way to send off the woodland creatures tour. i had always wanted to do something like this, where two bands play on stage at once (holla me versus i nd the artwork of). the energy the whole song was so infectious, it was fun to see people in the crowd go off too. also, fucking KRIS KHUNACHAK shot this video with TWO ANGLES holding both his cameras at the same time. i still can’t get over that.

i love that pulses. played you already know as their closer, it was the perfect way to wrap up their set and the best bookend to the setlist they chose. kevin would get on the mic every night and speak to the crowd, dude is just really good at being a performer and resonating with people. in jacksonville he sat down and everyone followed his lead haha. it was fun to dance one last time with everyone as we watched pulses. kill it before the tour came to an official end. we then gathered outside to take group pictures. it’s the part you don’t wanna get to, because it signals farewells in the near future, but we took some really great ones. 

post-gig taco bell plans were foiled, but someone recommended the silver dollar diner nearby. diners outside of jersey are normally horrifying but i trusted the people we were with. we piled back in our vehicles and rolled 20 heads deep to the diner. it was actually a really sick diner with tons of vegan dishes and pretty tasty food. i got chicken noodle soup, red wine and an ice cream sundae because i am a freak of nature. we ate up like 3 tables and sat altogether, just bitching about having to return to real life the following monday. but also, trying to plan the next time we would see each other. already!! and!! talking about doing more shows together. we try to work with different people all the time but there are a select few bands we would tour with or gig with again and again and again and pulses. are one of them. after how much fun this run was it’s pretty hard to imagine not doing this again. it just... makes sense. so much sense. and it feels wrong to not do it again lmao.  

goodbyes were bittersweet. we huddled in the parking lot by our van to say goodnight and see ya later, one by one. fuckin, tyler is moving to nashville very soon so we all probably won’t see him for a hot minute :’----------( thankfully everyone else really isn’t that far if we planned a weekend trip to meet halfway or if we wanted to make the trip out to each other, thank god!!! i don’t know what i would do if i couldn’t always have a part of this tour with me, somehow or some way.

was thinking of adding a lengthy epilogue but it’s essentially just me openly sobbing in the van the entire ride home hahaha. you’d think that every single time it would get easier to come home but it doesn’t. i know why touring impacts me as much as it does emotionally, but when the bittersweet acceptance of coming home pours over into tears like it does, i feel kinda silly. i’m sure that there are musicians who are constantly gigging that would love nothing more than to be home more, and i know that if i was in their shoes i would come to dread touring, too. 

i really, truly wish i was in a place, or that my bandmates and i, were in a place to tour more often, but for now we have what we have. and that’s okay. i want to share something beautiful our friend charlene posted today that deeply moved me:

Chronicles of Sturgia

Prologue Part 1: “The Garbled Gossip”

In order for a story to make sense, the reader must know who the main characters are. After all, the main characters are the ones who drive the story. Imagine a middle school cafeteria, bustling with chatter, like a theater before the show. The cafeteria is bright and cheery with its checkered floor and artistic walls. Hundreds of children are chattering at once, some talking about the newest member in a famous band; others are talking about mysterious rumors of aliens, but everyone knows rumors like that are only real in comic books and movies. The chatter continues, an endless garble of noise. Anyone in the cafeteria can see a variety of different students. Six girls walking by while wearing coordinated outfits, a typical guy surrounded by his strange friends, a girl who chooses to doodle on her tablet by herself. However, none of them are our main characters.

As lunch begins, a girl sits down at an empty table with her lunch. Her name is Maddie, and she is the first of our six main characters. She wears a school uniform in a school that doesn’t require school uniforms and has a poppy in her hair. Her eyes are dark, mysterious, and a little sleepy, though her left eye is partially covered by her one-sided bangs. Maddie prefers to spend her time reading spooky novels or playing spooky video games. Her lunch is chopped beef with a slice of devil’s food cake on the side. Maddie isn’t the one who talks very much at her table, but when discussing her interests, she takes full control of the conversation. During an everyday conversation, Maddie is the type of person who tends to listen and observe. This is great for Maddie since she always knows exactly what type of gifts to give her friends on their birthdays.

The chatter continues. Sometimes, when you listen closely, you can listen in on gossip. This can tell someone a lot about what others think of them. Gossip isn’t always the best form of entertainment. But passing students continue to eavesdrop nonetheless.

“Did you see Maddie? She’s so elegant and graceful!”

“She’s like everyone’s big sister. They shouldn’t need to be so dependant on her! She acts like some concerned mom sometimes.”

“But she’s a total goth too! Have you seen her clothes? She looks like she came right out of boarding school! I bet that she’s secretly a witch or something.”

The children continue with their daily routine. The coordinated girls eat healthy salads. A nerdy girl talks to her friends, making sassy remarks with a deadpan voice. Meanwhile, a bratty kid is playing pranks on other people. But none of them are our main characters.

A second girl sits down to eat with Maddie. Her name is Susan. She’s Maddie’s little sister and her total opposite. Susan wears a purple A-line dress with pink flowers on it and keeps a white lily in her hair. She also wears black stockings and flowery shoes. Her eyes are bright, happy, and excited. Susan loves cute things, especially cute things from Japan. She likes doing things like watching cute anime or buying cute plushies. Susan makes her own Japanese bento lunch, complete with octopus sausages and onigiri. But sometimes, Susan decides to go all out and create a cute and elaborate bento lunch with cute characters and a large variety of food. When Susan first saw how cute bento boxes could be, her eyes sparkled with awe. She saved up her allowance so that she could buy her own genuine bento box. Her friends always love her bento box designs and ask her if she could make lunch for them. Susan is extroverted, which in this case means she loves to talk, but is overly dependant on others and sometimes comes off as rude and annoying. Anyone who calls Susan annoying isn’t her friend. During an everyday conversation, Susan is the type of person who gets distracted by her surroundings and always carries the conversation. Susan truly cares about her friends, but always forgets things like their birthdays. Fortunately, she has her sister Maddie to help her remember.

The garbled gossip goes on and on. Everyone wonders what people think of them. They get self-conscious and anxious just thinking about it. Gossip is always behind one's back, but it’s not always well hidden.

“Have you seen Susan? OMG! She’s soooo cute!”

“She may be cute, but she’s annoying. Why can’t she just leave us alone? She should just go back to relying on her sister for everything.”

“She’s also a total weeb! Susan is so into anime and cutesy stuff, it’s sickening! Also also, she totally copied my style!”

While the peanut gallery rambled on, the kids kept eating their lunch. One of the coordinated girls finishes eating and walks over to another table to talk to her other friends. A snarky girl who looks rather similar to Susan gossips and acts as if the leader of her group, even though she’s not. Meanwhile, two sisters and their friend talk about the latest horror movies. But none of them are our main characters.

A third kid sits at the table with the sisters. This time, the kid is a boy named Peter. He wears a propeller hat and a shirt with a smiley face and blue-and-yellow-striped sleeves. Peter also wears a heavy backpack, filled with a ton of schoolwork, his lunch, a bunch of colorful yo-yos, some robot parts from the robotics club, and a huge album of trading cards. His eyes are simple, yet optimistic and determined. Peter likes geeky things like robots and trading cards. He always has the coolest toys. His favorite food is ground beef and rice with ketchup that his mom makes for him. During lunch, he also likes to have a grilled cheese and pizza bagels alongside the beef to share with friends. Peter and his friends love to trade and share their lunches. Peter is outgoing and friendly but sometimes is too distracted with building robots to talk. During an everyday conversation, Peter is cool with listening to others talk, but he can easily carry a conversation if needed. People like talking to him because conversations with him are never boring.

The students continue to talk incessantly. Not everyone who talks with friends is a gossip. Sadly, many girls tend to be labeled as gossips just for being outgoing. The saying, “It takes one to know one,” definitely rings true here.

“Peter’s kind of cute. He looks really cool with his gadgets and toys!”

“Are you kidding me? Peter’s a DWEEB!”

“Geez, shut up! Takes one to know one, dweeb.”

Lunch continues on. The coordinated girl and one of her friends decide to do their friend’s hair in wacky hairstyles. A cooler girl sits with the snarky girl that looks like Susan and chat about other people. The bratty kid gets into an argument with some other students. But none of them are our main characters.

A girl named Lisa, the fourth friend, sits at the lunch table. She wears a large tie-dye shirt and worn bell-bottoms. Lisa wears way too many bracelets and keeps her curly dyed hair up in two large pigtails with scrunchies. Her eyes have more makeup than her friends’, which makes them look more flashy. Lisa likes doing fun things like having parties and playing dolls. She likes playing dress-up and usually likes having sleepovers with Peter. Sometimes, Peter and Lisa would play shovelware games and laugh at them during their sleepovers.

Lisa always likes to sneak candy into her lunch, which usually has fun, bizarre food. She always trades food with Peter. Lisa is chatty but very kind, even to people who don’t like her. During an everyday conversation, Lisa is usually the one to start it. She always talks about the latest trends, but Lisa always gets bored from running out of things that she wants to talk about. Lisa knows that people think she’s a girly gossip, but she really wants to get rid of that view people have on her so that she can live a more free life.

The chatter continues. Some people don’t really care about gossip. They’re the smart ones, ignoring others’ opinions and focusing on being themselves. Like a stone wall, harsh words don’t get through to them. But even a stone wall wears down over time.

“You know Lisa right? That weird girl with the flashy accessories?”

“Yeah, what’s her deal anyway? Who’s she tryin’ to impress?”

“I heard that it’s Peter, they always hang out together. What losers!”

Lunch continues, but there are still some students waiting in line for their food. The sister of the girl with the wacky hairstyle writes in her journal while listening to emotional music. While the girl who looks like Susan continues to gossip, the true leader of her friend group sits quietly. She writes poetry and hums a familiar song. The girl with the tablet continues to sit alone and draw in peace. But none of these students are our main characters.

A fifth student sits with Maddie, Susan, Peter, and Lisa. She is carrying a tray piled with food along with her lunch box. Her name is Annie, and she’s wearing a faux raccoon tail hat and a worn plaid shirt with worn jeans. Annie’s eyes are stern but friendly. She’s a tough girl who loves camping and tasty food. Her dad has taken her out hiking and fishing countless times. She’ll eat anything for lunch. She loves meat, and is always down for eating out. Annie’s eyes are much larger than her stomach. This always results in Annie leaving lunch too full and having lots of leftovers to give to her friends. But she doesn’t really mind. Annie volunteers at the local food bank every day, which gives her the opportunity to donate any extra food that she’s gathered during lunch. From time to time, Annie’s friends also volunteer at the food bank. Annie is strong and motivating, but can be insensitive at times. During an everyday conversation, Annie always finds a way to brighten someone’s day. She tends to rush through life, but her friends help her to slow down and appreciate the world around her more.

Almost everyone has settled down to eat. Many students have already finished their lunch. But the chatter is louder than ever. In the end, others’ opinions don’t matter. But even still, when a person spends too much time taunting people and belittling friendship, they get annoying. People start ignoring them and getting bored of them. Sometimes, one has to wonder if that person turned out well.

“Do you know Annie?”

“Yeah, she’s that tomboy. What’s her deal?”

“She can be so insensitive, giving false motivation. What a hypocrite.”

Lunch begins to close. Students are finishing their food and packing up. The coordinated girls reunite and begin heading back to class. The strange friends of the regular guy begin finishing up, but still chatter. Everyone else, including the bratty kid and the artistic girl, throw out their trash and begin to leave. But none of them are our main characters.

Before lunch begins to end, one last person sits with his friends. He arrives at the table with Annie. His name was Chris. Chris is considered a nerd. He wears large glasses, a bowtie with a school uniform, and has his hair slicked back. Chris is shorter than his friends. He’s a studious kid who loves reading and math. Chris was the last to join his friend group. When he first joined, he was apprehensive. He was too scared to ask them to let him join their group. But what he wanted more than anything else was to have a group of friends he could be a part of. He simply needed to build up his courage. His lunch normally consists of hard boiled eggs, tuna, and salty crackers. Chris is kind, but is also shy and awkward. During an everyday conversation, Chris is the type of person who listens, but really wants to speak. He may be shy, but he has his friends to take care of him and help him become more social.

The cafeteria is almost empty, but the chatter still lingers. The students walk back to class, yet our six main characters still remain, being the last ones to pack up and leave. In the end, gossip doesn't matter. Only your own actions matter. In the future, things may get better. Sometimes, it doesn't get better. The best we can do is make the best of it. But we must also strive to improve our lives for the better.

“You know Chris, right?”

“Who?”

“The kid who always follows Annie around. He's like her minion or something.”

“Oh yeah, the egghead! He just, like, doesn't stand out to me a lot.”

Finally, everyone leaves, heading back to class and taking their noisy chatter with them. The garbled gossip fades away, leaving the cafeteria empty. But just because lunch is over doesn’t mean that the story is. A show always begins on an empty stage. Just like a play, the story is only just beginning...
