Why I like them/why I don’t: vector may have hit me with hammers but trey is really close behind him as my second fav zexal character, i love this kid so much. i cant believe when i got into zexal i was so worried about quattro fucking me up i got completely blind-sighted by his baby brother. he makes my chest hurt. i love characters whose sense of devotion and loyalty is so great they put their own life at risk!!! I LOVE FAMILY DRAMA!!! HE JUST WANTED TO DO HIS FAMILY PROUD. HE ALMOST DID A MURDER-SUICIDE WORLD ENDER OUT OF HOW MUCH HE LOVES HIS FAMILY

What I like about their appearance: his color palette is sooo so nice...those lovely shades of pink with the pop of green in his eyes and his crest. Also his hair is just so cute i love the little curly twirls by his ears.

Favourite moment they were in: his duel with yuma was and is my all time favorite zexal duel, between the colors and the stakes and the EVERYTHING. IT'S JUST SO GOOD. i think my especially favorite moment of that duel is the agony of Trey using aztec mask golem as trebuchet fodder, the card he literally like an episode before described as his favorite, just in that bone-deep desperation to win and do his dad proud. GUHHHHHH. (runner up moment: when he threw a sword at mr. heartland. also when he stole mizar's dragon looooool)

Least favourite moment: right before he's about to die and he's thanking yuma for being his friend and YUMA CANT EVEN BE THERE FOR HIM. IT'S NOT A BAD MOMENT OR ANYTHING IT JUST MAKES ME SAD!!!!!!!

HOW NOSTALGIA PANDERING RUINED YGO

On today's topic, we're gonna explain why nostalgia ruined Yugioh and why it became stereotyped 100% because of Konami's bullshit. I call it Alienating 101. You see, I don't care enough to try to explain in too much depth, but let's keep it short.

Let's start off with the reason and why. Konami made new support cards based on one duel from the YGO anime, but people forgot that it's from the manga. The Metal Raiders cards got some support but are all underwhelming and don't feel anything but cheap and uninteresting. Why exactly is that? Well, nostalgia in YGO is just straight-up horse shit. This is mainly because YGO shows past the original were never marketed heavily like the first series. Fanboys in the USA overpraised the first series but overkilled it at the same time.

Konami's current practice of basing Yugioh cards on manga panels rather than promoting creativity is seen as nepotism and detrimental to the game's evolution. You feel this approach limits community creativity and serves primarily to glorify the first anime series, neglecting the potential for new and innovative card designs. This trend frustrates you because it prioritizes nostalgia over fresh ideas and diversity within the game.

In my opinion, Konami just keeps pandering Yugioh cards that are mostly Duel Monsters (first ygo series) way too much towards its fandom. As of this year, Konami has pissed off its fandom and people are fed up. It's also ironic that Ygo fans can't read or explain shit. What is this, the Dragon Ball community?

So what is nostalgia pandering? It's pretty much what happens when you pander nostalgia to anyone who is a baby boomer or a zoomer. But there is something shocking. Yugioh fans are straight-up toxic because most of them are blinded by nostalgia towards shows like DM, GX, or fucking Zexal. In my opinion, YGO shows are often the subject of debate, but in recent years Konami doesn't even explain shit. Most of the reason people view the first YGO this way is because it was the first one that everyone overliked and overlooked the most. Now, I have nostalgia towards 5D's, but unlike DM and GX, I don't consider 5D's as toxic as the first series because 5D's broke the mold for Yugioh in the past and ultimately saved it from doom or cancellation.

But I think the real reason was the 2010s when Konami started to pander this shit everywhere. Take the disaster movie Dark Side of Dimensions, which in my opinion sucked and was nothing more than nostalgia 101 for Duel Monsters fanboys. That movie doesn't deserve to be praised and is trash, in my opinion. The whole movie was nostalgia clickbait gone wrong, and people refused to hate it because if you were part of the 2010s fandom, you would get canceled instantly. I seriously think that movie's fault was Takahashi's.

And let's include YGO ARC-V as well, since that series was straight-up underwhelming due to its choice of nostalgia.

Then we have the fandom finally opening their damn eyes and seeing what's next. On the YGO Organization, I saw this person who told us exactly how Konami is screwing up our childhood. He summed it up perfectly. They print cards based on the anime and manga, and to make things worse, Konami keeps making bad choices in the effect division, with it being once again based off the shows.

See, part of the problem with YGO and its fandom is the influence of mainstream media and the community of other series as well. Nobody cares about newer fans, instead pandering towards the older fans who started the genre 20-40 years ago. Take, for example, Pokemon's community, where Game Freak keeps putting Gen 1 Pokemon in every new game, or the Digimon franchise, where Bandai pandered with movies a couple of years ago. This is because nostalgia for fans of those shows who started it can make money, but in recent years, it started to become a meme. In the 2010s, nostalgia became one of the most problematic things.Konami's focus on nostalgia and its perceived neglect of newer fans can be attributed to corporate greed. They prioritize profit over the integrity of their product and the satisfaction of their fanbase. This approach has led to decisions that favor pandering to older fans who are more likely to spend money on nostalgic content, while potentially alienating newer fans who may not have the same attachment to older series. This strategy has been criticized for undermining the quality and innovation of the Yugioh franchise, leading to frustration and disappointment among fans.

Yugioh fans often struggle to accept realities that challenge their nostalgic views, whether related to the card game or the anime series. This nostalgia can blind them to flaws and shortcomings in newer iterations of the franchise. Some fans may perpetuate stereotypes and illogical arguments, which hinders constructive discourse within the community. It's important to encourage a balanced perspective that appreciates the franchise's history while also acknowledging its evolution and areas for improvement. For anyone who hasn't been around a long time, Yugo used to be my Number One brainrot boy. I still love him dearly and get all giddy and squeaky over him, the fixation is just not turned up to the max anymore.

Why I like them/why I don’t I just love how.... easygoing he is? He takes being flown across dimensions by himself like he took a wrong turn somewhere. He's a smart boi who built a D-Wheel from scratch with his best friend as a pre-teen. He's introduced by crashing into a street lamp after another dimension jump and just Keeps Showing Up here and there, never knowing what's going on but always ready to throw hands or make friends. It's so funny. He's wears his heart on his sleeve and cries like he has nothing to be ashamed of. Yugo's just a joy to watch.

And despite being usually relegated to comedic relief, he's actually one of the strongest duelists in the show. Second ever time we see him he OTK's three Obelisk Force soldiers at once. And that contrast is v appealing to me.

What I like about their appearance His eyes.

Yugo has Such pretty eyes. Anyone who's read my Yugo-centric fanfiction knows I cannot keep myself from mentioning them. I love that his main colour is white! You don't see that very often for characters of his type. And his blue bang is v appealing, and I love taking snapshots when it moves. He's so expressive as well!

Also he's cute. You can't tell me he's not.

OTP Dimensionshipping! I think it's very fun, and great to build AU's around. Inside it I like all yuboy pairs with Yugo except for Pawn, which I'm lukewarm on. It's just not my thing.

NOTP Don't have one. If a fic for a Yugo ship I haven't thought of or isn't invested in seems well-written and appealing to me, then I'll read it.

Favourite card they use Clear Wing Synchro Dragon. One of my favourite yugioh dragons ever. I adore the crystalline wings, the long tail in place of legs, and the colour scheme is so appealing. It's also so pretty in the anime.

Favourite moment they were in I can't choose help-

Okay so, I do have one I can highlight, that I don't think many would pick. But it's all of episode 54, which shows what happened to Yuzu and Yugo after they were teleported away at the Maiami championship. I think this episode is a good showcase of the Full Yugo Personality Package. All that's missing is a scene where he cries.

We see him being concerned but not very thoughtful, hotheaded when he gets seriously annoyed over Yuzu getting his name wrong. He's willing to talk and answer any questions Yuzu has if he can, and even takes mistaking Yuto for Yuri rather easily. He's a bit too eager when he gets an idea in his head, and when Yuzu breaks down in tears, he's quickly apologetic for being pushy. Doesn't tell her to stop crying, just gives her a handkerchief to wipe her tears, aplogizes and that it was his fault, and just... talks to her.

And he's so gentle?? He tells her about Rin, and it's so obvious that he loves his best friend so much. And Yuzu quickly calms down. He's just a very sweet, caring guy who can get too passionate sometimes. It's big "too good for this world" energy with Yugo, with 'this world' being the synchro dimension. It makes you wonder how bad his interactions with the Resistance in the Xyz dimension must have been for Yugo to be hostile enough to be labelled their enemy and even get a nickname among them, even if it's from people misunderstanding his name.

But then when the situation turns bad and they're discovered by Tops in an area they're not allowed in, he's immediately locked in and focused on Getting The Hell Out Of There with Yuzu. He knows when to get serious, and he doesn't mess around when it comes to the law enforcment of his world.

Least favourite moment Don't think I will ever forgive Arc V for destroying Yugo and Rin's D-Wheel. And for having Rin be the cause of it.

Why I like them/why I don’t: I mean like you know kind of a blorbo by proxy. I think he has this very fun balance of deeply normal AND kind of unhinged. Of very secretive and distant and in deep need of helping and talking to people. Need to control and be guided. But also that's what being a teenager with parental issues does to a guy I can't blame him.

What I like about their appearance: so i kind of love how his hair fits on his haid it's something I really try to replicate like it's this feeling of... technically it IS short but also it's just a bit long. It just falls a bit all over him. Yeah idk how to explain but I love attempting to draw it.

Do I prefer their dub names or original names? so yeah never watched the dub beside specific eps and clips so I'm a chronical sub names user BUT Aster is so cute and fits him so well imo. Actually I probably should use Ed because it's likely what his names is supposed to be but idk i'm used to a spelling and pronunciation and it's really hard for me to switch.

OTP: yeah so like destinyshipping yeah yeah. Made a thousand art and fics and AUs and stories what am I supposed to say. They hit the perfect balance of terminally sad and messy AND very cute and hopeful. Also i do like heroshipping and whatever edo/manjoume is called but i admit i have a hard time being strongly invested in something of GX that is not saiou.

NOTP: Never really saw a ship that I disliked heavily so I'm not going to make myself think of one.

OT3: I have been so sooo many thoughts about edo/saiou/judai combination situationship lately. Listen. Edo having his silly childhood crush and his silly teenage crush on two people (he's actually painfully in love but shh). One clearly has no interest in romantic relationship or is overall very distant with it and the other spends half the time disappearing from public circulation to go deal with supernatural creature. Then eventually he realize that they 1/ spend a lot of time together 2/ are much MUCH closer than he thought 3/ may or may not have something going on between them. But also the entire point is that. Yeah. Neither Saiou nor Judai really are into anything like a "romantic relationship" and function fairly well together because of that but also if Edo just TALKS TO THEM ABOUT IT maybe he can not feel left out all the time. Things like that. I hope someday I can write them but it'll be long and messy.

Favourite card they use: D-time because at some point we tried recreating it with my friend on some tea biscuits with sugar and all and it was fun.

Favourite moment they were in: IMAGINE HOLDING SAIOU'S HAND WOW I WISH THAT WERE ME THAT SO UNFAIR COME OOON no also the whole scene is one of my fav ygo moment ever.

Least favourite moment: uuh i guess i was not quite impressed by the amon mini-arc with echo and everything? But also beside a dozen ep season 3 didn't amaze me the most so it's not on him.

And for apparently the new exclusive yugioh character Cecil Harvey (actually he'd make for a really fun ygo protag. I have that AU somewhere)

Why I like them/why I don’t: Cecil feel like a very classic jrpg protagonist from afar like yeah he's very kind and devoted but has to prove himself after having been driven to do bad things... But also... I think he's very unique in how that kindness and devotion is portrayed. In the average story it'd be about how sad it is for him that he keeps sacrificing himself for others and carry such a burden and so and so... But not in FFIV. In this game his kindness is a burden for others. His devotion, his sense of sacrifice, make other people have to take care of him. His sensibility means his emotions are always the most important thing, and it's so rare for stories to take that angle instead of making the protagonist's emotion well... the most important thing. It makes him a very subtle character, both deeply positive and good but also almost destructive to people around him under the wrong circumpstances.

What I like about their appearance: he is SO pretty, squenix just don't make beautiful men like this anymore. His hair looks so soft and airy, the little jewels and decoration and make up is so cute, and i love how he looks like he glows in the dark. I will say I especially love the fact that Amano's artwork, the pixel art, the remake, dissidia, and all the different re-design he has means Cecil's look is less a defined set of rules and more a direction, certain choices, specific artistic takes. It's less about accurate reproduction and more capturing his essence. It's very liberating to draw.

OTP : ot3 is below but know i'm a baron trio truther and it's above anything else. Cecil/rosa is cute on it's own but I think it lacks a little drama and spice. Cecil/Kain feels a little bit more fun to play with on its own but it's never really just that sole ship to me. Also actually let me call this "favorite relationship" or something and say Cecil and Golbez are the reason I got into FF and their dynamic is the most beautiful thing, so full of pain and love and everything.

NOTP : He doens't have many popular ship so like. None I can think of.

OT3 : BARON TRIO BARON TRIO BARON TRIO these 3 idiots love each other so much in such different way and their relationship becomes sooo interesting and also so gentle when they're all together. And I love how it's frankly very supported by canon? In the DS version whenever 2 are reunited they will think of where is the other and want them here. In DFFOO all Cecil want is to have BOTH of them with him. In WoFF they repeat a scene from ffiv but Kain is sick, Cecil is looking for a cure and Rosa is watching over him. They're just fated to always need all of each other.

Favourite moment they were in: Uuuh practically every scene with Golbez? Calling him "brother" for the first time when they're about to die, and again when they're about to be separated. When he's lost to darkness in TAY but hears his brother calling him so he doesn't disappear. When he tells him he's guiding light in Dissidia. They're so full of love.

Least favourite moment : I guess like most iv fan, when he tells Rosa and Rydia to stay out of the final battle. They kind fo justify it because the 3 guys have very personnal reason to want revenge/answers so Cecil doesn't just think women shouldn't fight but. it does show how this game still can't give female characters as much emotional intensity as the male characters.

Would I fuck, marry or kill them: chosing the fourth secret option where i marry his brother because i so SO want Cecil and Rosa as in-laws.

Seto and Mokuba Kaiba are important to me and I feel they have a complex and nuanced relationship, and it’s kept them both alive and has given them hope but it has its tensions as well. The love in an imperfect family struggling and surviving, and understanding each other and not understanding each other and being there for each other or not knowing how to be there for each other, and reaching for each other, failing at times, and trying.

9) …what my ideal endgame for them is.

I toy with how their relationship may play out in a few ways. Sometimes Seto and Atem meet that final time in the Netherworld, and they see and understand how much they mean to each other and can say goodbye, and Seto returns home alone. Sometimes Seto and Atem return home together. There was a period after DSoD first came out where Japanese fan stories would feature Seto traveling back and forth between the mortal world and the Netherworld and I don’t mind toying with that concept either. It probably depends on my mood. I like the two holding onto that bond. Knowing they meant something to each other. And/or continuing to be part of each other’s lives.

I do think both Seto and Atem have growing to do as people, and should learn about themselves and the world more, but I also don’t feel the two need to be glued at the hip in the case of Atem returning home with Seto. I do think it would take time for them to be stably together. I kind of characterize them as starting out as “exclusive-friends-with-benefits,” and it takes time for them to move into labeling their relationship a romance.

I feel this fictional relationship might be too close to my heart for me to want to change it exactly. Which is a non-answer so I apologize. I kind of see the characters as themselves in canon and can’t ask for them to change exactly.

This is again a taste/preference thing of course. I certainly have added more details to the early portion of Seto’s canon in my mind, and it’d be nice if some of those details were canon. More details of the mentally breaking away from everything and everyone. Maybe more foreshadowing of Gozaburo haunting him.

6) …the scene that I think shows just how awesome they really are.

You know, lately I’ve been thinking of Seto’s tired and regret-filled and mournful expression as he internally apologizes for failing Mokuba just before Pegasus seals away Seto’s soul. “Awesome” isn’t really the correct word. But for some reason I’ve been thinking of those panels.

Perhaps related, and maybe more in the category of “awesome” is Seto trusting in his deck and cards during that duel as he blindly pulls the Blue Eyes White Dragon to play from his deck. A gesture of faith and hope and heart.

ASTRAL MY LOVE!!

What I love about them: SO much!! Gorgeous character design, I think about just how effective his design is all the damn time, he’s the perfect example of ‘ethereal beauty.’ I can only imagine how much more effective his design would be had his hair been more ‘flowy’ with better animation. But Ygo thrives on detailed still images and just look up one picture of Astral and you’ll just see- here, I’ll do it for you

Also a nonbinary legend. He/she/they take the crown.

I’ve always loved the trope of inhuman being discovering humanity for the first time, I love how well Zexal was able to execute how he changed over the course of the series- From a frankly emotionless brat who always had some snarky condescending comment say, to a genuinely kind person with some agency of his own (some, we’ll get into that.) I loved seeing each emotion he experienced, and he’s just great and underutilized despite being the most important person in the series (we’ll get into that)

What I hate about them: He was not utilized enough! It’s not his fault, it's the executives and such, but rewatching when Astral (spoilers) was genuinely disagreeing with Yuma and finding it hard to see himself going down the same path as him and trusting him again (which is huge because Astral got to a point where he trusted Yuma unconditionally and it blew up in his face bad,) what could’ve been used to voice their differences and speak up for himself more just…Did not happen. All of Astral’s thoughts stay within his head. 

He gets shoved to the side a LOT for someone who is a floating plot devise and the entire reason the story is even happening. It’s been about 12 years and Astral is still viewed as an extension of Yuma in a lot of the official ygo merchandise. I love their relationship, but Astral needed to be more independent! Narratively and just in general. 

Favorite Moment/Quote: I had to go back and get it, subbed episode 48- “I have no idea when I will vanish, but you have a future and infinite possibilities. Thus, I wish to leave behind the proof of my existence in your mind” (I believe dub said ‘heart’ instead of ‘mind’, both work beautifully)

Astral completely excluding himself from having a future, resigning to disappearing without a trace and no one will remember him but Yuma…and that’s all he wants out of his life. It is so damn sad that he just sort of resigns to his existence being a fickle and meaningless thing (once his mission is over) but his innocent hope of at least one person remembering him cementing itself in his friend’s grief-addled mind just aaaa! He’s just got this air of sadness that’s so !! 

What I would like to see more focus on: Astral was created for one purpose only, and when that he succeeded in his mission, it’s implied that there’s just nothing after that. That he’d just be used up, dead and gone. He carries this sort of instinctual desire to self-sacrifice because that is what he’s made to do and I’m always screaming at the TV screen, just begging him to think about himself and gain a desire to live!! Screw these people who made you to fix their own mistakes! You deserve to live, Astral!

What I would like to see less focus on: Uhhh not sure really, maybe less of him just living and breathing through Yuma and more of him being his own person. 

Favorite pairing with: Oh that’s easy, It’s [REDACTED] But on something I can talk about, I genuinely really enjoyed writing Goldenshipping (Jey x Astral) when you commissioned me and whenever I see the fanart I go 👀👀

Favorite friendship: Astral and Yuma are iconic (and obvious.) For a more unconventional one, the little friendship Astral and Haruto had was so genuinely wholesome (too bad those characters both aren’t really focused on at all) 

Astral teaching this traumatized child how to eat with chopsticks and smiling fondly at him when his instruction works?? Fucking beautiful. I cried. 

The fact that Astral was willing to give all of his numbers, his MEMORIES, to Kaito in order to save Haruto should Yuma find that the better solution. Amazing.

Ok so I LOVE protags usually, I'm rarely a protag hater, but I hate when shows go out of their way to make protags solve EVERYTHING even when it’s really not appropriately theirs, like shows that need to find reasons to keep protagonists in the episode or in the frame, or to remind us that it’s the protag’s world and the cast is just all living in it

But in my whole ass I feel like Heartland and Kaito’s duel is an actual disaster

It's also honestly a little bit of character assassination as a treat for no reason but we'll touch that in detail in the paper

And letting Yuma and Astral take this duel over is just an egregious slap in the face lmfao

Especially how the show chooses to handle Kaito passing out and everything following when he finally returns to consciousness that just makes him essentially a step up from background character

Yet people deadass have the nerve to say Kaito has the most favoritism, bitch where lol

Extremely unsatisfying to watch someone who's been an established threat for the ENTIRE show not be able to dismantle the last standing figure in their life who’s been a source of great pain to them and someone who has never dueled up until this point at that! And not only does he NOT get to take the dub, it's literally his second last duel in the entire show and while the last duel is INCREDIBLE, making this a moment of glory for the protags is weird!

Idk, I stand firmly that this part is unwatchable, just a very badly done way to backseat Kaito to shift the focus onto the original duo, and that in theory is cool, but there are so many better ways to do it

First Impression: I've liked Asuka since the beginning :D What struck me the most was how cool her deck was, especially since I hadn't seen ritual monsters up until that part. I thought Cyber Blader was just sick as fuck and it definitely contributed to my ritual obsession LOL

Impression now: I LOVE HER!!! She's my second favourite ygo girl like. Ever. It was such a relief that like. She actually wins a ton of duels she plays and doesn't get thrown off because the writers said that women can't play card games. She's strong and stoic and FUNNY and I love that about her and everytime she's on screen it makes me smile!!

Favourite moment: I still haven't finished S2 of GX because I've just been putting it off and putting it off but I do think my favourite Alexis moment/episode has to be when she fights that gambler for her mother's scarf. I think it kind of gives us insight into Alexis' life before DA and I think it's sweet that it insinuates she's close to her mother. Similarly, I like episode where she reunites with Atticus and her duel against Jaden during the Society of Light arc. (I've heard she's awesome in season 4 tho so I'm like... excited!!)

Idea for a story: I've had this idea of Asuka struggling with adult life after graduating college and becoming a teacher and just escaping it all by going on a road trip with Judai. I love Judai and Asuka but like... platonically y'know? (I also wanna read about Asuka and Yubel interacting like in any way)

Unpopular opinion: I THINK ASUKA SHOULD HAVE HIT THE PRO LEAGUES!!!! She's wasting her potential in teaching!! Boo!! Let her be a pro duelist!! Let her kick Phoenix's ass!!!

Why I like them/why I don’t: i may not be as DMbrained any more, but Joey has been so so close to my heart for, no exaggeration, 20 years. I had the Joey starter deck when I was like 9 and I CHERISHED that sucker, i still have most of the cards. he was my favorite of the 'main' cast by leaps and bounds. Joey's just such a fun, funny, endlessly compassionate character, it's hard NOT to like him. I love the luck motifs in his deck and the way that ties into his character/his father, I love that he's rough and tumble and loves with his whole heart. he's one of yugioh's best big brothers and best duelists period and seeing him is like seeing an old friend for me. also one of my earliest anime boy crushes 👍

What I like about their appearance: it's such a rather simple design especially among the yugioh pantheon, but his shaggy blond hair and that green jacket especially is just such a nice look all around. Also of course his bonkers expressions are so fucking good. The OG.

I think my stuff really shines when I can focus on the thoughts, feelings and introspection and I find it's easier to channel that with sex scenes than it is with fights. Fun part about writing ygo now though is I get to write card games instead of actual fights though lol.
