Alternate Capstones
Tumblr media
One of the coolest things about leveling up in a single class is the promise that at the end, you’ll get an incredible ability that elevates you to a whole new tier of power, many of which could be argued to be similar to near-demigod status, or at least so legendary that the stories of your character’s prowess will shape the setting thereafter.
However, like so many things in Pathfinder, not everyone approaches that zenith of power the same way, and so, with the final paperback of first edition: Chronicle of Legends, we’re going to take a look at some alternate capstone abilities. I’ll mostly be focusing on those of classes we’ve already done reviews of, saving the alternate capstones of the others for when I review them as well. That being said, there is also a handful of other capstone abilities that are more tied to recurring class features or other traits, rather than a specific class.
Obviously, a character cannot take one of these alternate capstones if they have an archetype that already replaces the capstone ability. Also, despite not truly having one, there is a class-specific capstone for both the cleric and wizard classes. Meanwhile, Alchemists and witches seem to lack one, though perhaps that is for the best, since their capstone is already a choice from a list.
The alternate capstones for the classes we’ve reviewed thus far:
Barbarians can gain or increase their durability, not only against physical damage, but also most energy types.
Bards can learn a performance so compelling that it captivates even a hostile audience, allowing them to command the creature with ease, and leave them in starstruck awe for a long while afterwards.
Cavaliers can forgo horsemanship to become legendary commanders, gaining another teamwork feat and increasing the area their tactical commands can benefit.
Clerics forge an incredibly deep bond with their deity, and are constantly aware of their approval or disapproval of a course of action. Additionally, they can tap into a third domain associated with their deity.
Druids, similarly forge such a strong connection to a region that they understand innately everything about it, as well as draw power from it. They can ask questions about their home region, and their spells are more potent while within.
Fighters can become incredibly experienced, bolstering their training with both weapons and armor in broad strokes.
Gunslingers can master every black-powder weapon and anything else considered a gun , and they become even more deadly with them.
For some Inquisitors, it’s not about being the hammer that strikes evil, but about guiding those that require aid, and they become masters at quickly training allies to fight together against the darkness.
Monks, instead of reaching otherworldly perfection, can further refine their martial arts, striking and dodging with uncanny grace.
Some Paladins are shining avatars of inspiration for their fellows, their various protective auras protecting large swaths of area and those within.
Rangers have seen every trick under the sun, and can add their mastery against their favored enemies to help protect themselves from the abilities of such creatures.
Rogues can become true jacks of all trades, gaining an inherent bonus to every skill.
Rather than achieve the zenith of their bloodline, the magic of a Sorcerer can branch out in a unique, personal way, granting abilities mimicking a second bloodline up to an extent.
Wizards are notorious for being limited in the number of spells they can cast, but some of those at the zenith of power get around that, tapping into a greater reserve of lower to mid-level spell energy, granting them more spells to prepare an eclectic and diverse assortment with.
While we’re not covering all the other classes today, there is more. There is an entire other set of alternate capstones that you can also take, some having no requirement, others requiring a particular class feature.
Classes with familiars or spirit animals can gain bolster their companion into an Arch-Familiar, bolstering their intelligence, and granting a variety of spell-like abilities to them.
Sometimes a character becomes a legend in their own field, someone of authority that others look up to and take orders from. Any class can become The Boss, gaining or founding some great institution and acquiring followers from it. A mage might found a magical academy, while a martial class might become the leader of a mercenary army or other military or guard. While at it’s baseline they gain a massive number of followers, depending on the context, they might gain authority and other powers associated with the position.
Spontaneous casting classes are limited by their spells known, so some use their zenith to learn the Deep Magics, increasing the number of spells they understand.
Classes with animal companions might choose for their partner to become a Great Beast, becoming legendary in physical might and cunning.
Though few, those classes with a ki pool can choose to become Ki Sages, bolstering their capacity for spiritual energies and learning two new powers drawn from those known to unchained monks.
Martial classes that grant bonus feats tend to be Old Dogs at 20th level, but they still have some New Tricks, gaining an additional handful of combat techniques.
The body and mind are the basis from which all characters get their start, and some express the height of power with a Perfect Body, and Flawless Mind, gaining a pool of points to distribute across their ability scores.
The base principle of sneak attacks is not just striking a foe while unawares, but also actually hitting the perfect spot, and some characters that can sneak attack choose to learn to do so with such regularity that they can deal grievous injury even to foes that are fully aware of their presence, hitting The Right Spot.
Becoming true conduits of positive or negative energy, some with that ability become Soul Conduits, able to channel more often, and to greater heights.
Practially Walking Libraries, some spellcasters that learn and prepare spells hit a breakthrough at 20th level, gaining a vast number of known spells and greater insight into various topics as well.
A few characters instead channel their potential into an iconic item such as a weapon, awakening it as a minor artifact with it’s own set of unique powers. With This Sword or other such items, their stories become all the greater and are rarely seperable.
Finally, some legendary heroes simply Won’t Stay Dead. Limited to once a week, these characters miraculously survive a lethal blow or permanently incapacitating effect, as if the gods of luck themselves are watching out for them.
And that does it for the alternate capstones that we’ll be going over today. Expect to see more added on to future class review specials. It’s also worth noting that while they didn’t get proper capstones, alchemist and witch did each get a new grand discovery and grand hex in that section of the book too, namely one that bolsters bomb damage to ungodly levels, and a mad dance that grants flight and buffs all participants.
While not for every player or build, these alternate capstones do fulfill a niche in that some class capstones don’t help out certain builds that much, letting you pick a better one that more suits what you’re doing with the character. For example, many rogues would rather further master their skills than become especially adept at killing or paralyzing others.
In any case, I hope you enjoyed this. Tune in this week for more fun subsystems within the game!

Pride (Jooheon)
Type: Seven Deadly Sins AU
MASTERLIST
Seven Deadly Sins Masterpost
Based on THIS post by @shownusdarling
WARNING: lots of angst and sadness
(A/N: PLEASE GO LISTEN AND STREAM DRAMARAMA BECAUSE IT IS AMAZING)
Tumblr media
~ Pride - corrupt belief of superiority over others ~
from the moment he became an Angel, Jooheon knew that his job was important
he was put in charge of giving inspiration and creativity to the humans, allowing for them to create new things and develop together
because of this skill, he was nicknamed the Inventor
any creative idea or invention that came in to being was set forth by him
and he took great pride in his works
naturally, he always gave credit to the humans that brought his ideas to life
but there was still a piece of him that felt happy with himself that the humans had taken to his work so well
as one of the youngest angels, Jooheon had to watch as all his older brothers fell to sin
he watched them fall from heaven, having their grace torn from their hearts, even betrayed one of them for the sake of the greater good
now, it was just him and his youngest brother left in heaven
this should have caused a heavy burden on his soul, now being the leader of the two, in charge of the duties of heaven
however, this turned out to not be the case
in fact, watching his brothers fall made his pride in himself grow
instead of feeling mournful for the loss of his brothers, he felt ashamed of them
they were supposed to be the Angels of heaven, were they not?
they should not have been so stupid as to fall for those basic tricks of evil
Jooheon believed that there was no way he was as dumb as his brothers to fall for the same things they did
he believed himself to be better than his brothers, more strong and skilled than them
the belief that he was superior to his brothers grew in his heart, and soon grew to overtake his mind
he felt a strong pull to share his influence on the world
after all, the humans had a right to know that it was him who was behind the creations and inventions of the world
he started to boast of his creations to his younger brother
Jooheon would tell him that it was he who was behind this new tool, or clothing item, or song that was written
his brother was happy for him, but also concerned
after Jooheon would boast to him, he would remind his older brother to not to be prideful
Jooheon would always respond by giving the humans some of the credit, but would then go back to his boastful ways
as hard as the youngest tried, he could not change his brother, for he had started down a path which he could not follow
all he could do was watch as his older brother began his descent
before too long, Jooheon’s pride grew to his head, and heaven became too small for his reach
he decided it was time that the humans knew of his amazing power
that day, he came down to the humans in a heavenly light, announcing his arrival as an Angel from heaven
the humans watched him in awe of his righteousness, believing his every word
Jooheon told the humans of all his great power, and showed them his mighty creations
he created new things right before their very eyes, and whatever the humans imagined, he made possible
he became like a god among men, the people following him without question
his voice boomed and his aura shown his heavenly glow, and the entire world watched him in awe
he let the world know of the ways of heaven, of the powers that the Angels withheld
because he boasted of his heavenly status, the humans showered him with praise and objects
they began to make him their soul ruler, putting him in charge of leading the people and creating new things
his brother watched from the heavens, sorrowful that his brother had stooped so low as to trick the humans like this
he knew he had to take action, and so, by the permission of heaven, he began to siphon the power out of Jooheon
for every prideful act and boast that he made, more of his power would be taken from him
Jooheon did not even notice that his youngest brother was slowly taking his power from him
it was not until Jooheon made an incredible promise to the humans that everything started to fall apart for him
Jooheon had made a promise to the humans that he would make a new kingdom for them
he promised he would level mountains and calm the seas, creating a whole different world for their enjoyment
this was heaven’s final straw
as Jooheon made an attempt at his glorious promise, nothing happened
there was complete silence
Jooheon tried to reassure his people that he was starting small, and that there was nothing to worry about
but, alas, his heavenly grace was already gone
he tried again to adhere to his promise, but once again, nothing happened
the people began to question him and his “almighty power”
and, when Jooheon tried to assuage their doubt, they only grew more weary of his excuses
as the people began to leave, he cried out to his brother, asking why he was no longer able to perform his duties
his youngest brother appeared before him, a solemn look on his face
he explained to Jooheon what he had done, telling him that his own power had become his greatest downfall
as the youngest Angel faded from view, Jooheon slowly began to see what he had done
his pride had overtaken him, and because of it, he had lost his grace
his wings were gone, and with it, his access to heaven
all he was left with was himself
and so, he too fell from grace
and now, there was only one Angel left
only one Angel to hold the fabric of the heavens together
only one left to fall to sin

Deadly Premonition 2 review – shambling in the shadow of its predecessor • Eurogamer.net
Trying to talk about the original Deadly Premonition is complicated. On a fundamental level, it’s a mess – a groaning slab of technical shortcomings and design deficiencies that would usually be enough to sink a game without a trace – and it’s a game that’s often dismissed, unfairly I think, as bit of a joke, a so-bad-it’s-good experience worthy of a chuckle on YouTube and nothing more. Enough of us would argue though – unironically and with absolute earnestness – that it’s also brilliant, a masterpiece of form; bold, ambitious, fiercely heartfelt, and a game that aims so, so high, and succeeds not because of, but in spite of its flaws.
Deadly Premonition 2 review
Developer: Toybox Inc.
Publisher: Rising Star
Platform: Reviewed on Switch
Availability: Out now on Switch
Partly that’s due to the original’s wonderful sense of place; its small-town murder mystery might have borrowed liberally from Twin Peaks, but its open-world setting – the perpetually grey, pine-scented highways and byways of Greenvale, Washington – felt both distinctive and positively alive as its sprawling cast of wonderfully realised oddball inhabitants went about their daily schedules in real-time, revealing their secrets to anyone with the curiosity to follow and observe.
It was frequently ridiculous, yes, and not always intentionally, but also, ultimately, genuinely affecting as its engrossingly bizarre plot wrought havoc on this shonkily implemented microcosm of life, finding some oddly insightful truths along the way. And at the heart of it all was Agent Francis York Morgan, still one of gaming’s most endearing protagonists, a relentlessly upbeat, chain-smoking FBI investigator, with a penchant for monologuing about his favourite 80s movies and a mysterious invisible friend called Zach.
The eternally upbeat York is the heart of Deadly Premonition 2, and still one of gaming’s greatest protagonists.
Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise is, initially at least, just as waywardly wobbly and improbably engrossing as its predecessor; never one to let a seemingly minuscule budget rein in his ambition, designer Hidetaka “Swery” Suehiro this time serves up both a prequel and sequel to his cult classic hit (knowledge of the first game’s events is certainly helpful), and, as proceedings get underway in 2019, time has not been kind to Agent Morgan.
In a long opening sequence (one of several dialogue-heavy, loosely interactive modern-day interludes), a retired Morgan, now grey haired, wild-eyed, and ravaged by cancer, locks horns with Aaliyah Davis, a fearless, Nietzsche-quoting FBI Agent who arrives at his apartment on the trail of a drug called Saint Rouge – ultimately re-igniting memories of a fateful murder investigation that occurred 14 years prior in the Louisiana town of Le Carré.
Eventually, as we’re whisked back to 2005 to experience the case first-hand, Morgan’s former self is restored, and his earnest optimism is once again the biggest draw. He’s warm, witty, and insightful – discussing his favourite 80s movies in Patrick Batemen-esque detail in one breath, and a grisly murder with upbeat zest the next – and the unmistakable heart of it all. And it’s here that Deadly Premonition 2 settles into a pattern of eccentric open-world exploration and survival horror action that should be immediately familiar to fans of the first game, even if its sun-bleached southern atmosphere is more True Detective than Twin Peaks this time around.
Acknowledging it doesn’t make it any more tolerable.
Deadly Premonition 2’s intermittent survival horror interludes – which thrust York into a gloomy otherworld to roam a linear arrangement of indistinguishable corridors, mowing down a grand total of three AI-deficient enemy types – are no less clumsy and dully simplistic than those of its predecessor, but are considerably fewer in number this time around. Instead, the bulk of your time is spent out in the open-world, performing largely mundane tasks for Le Carré’s new cast of appealing oddballs – including a local sheriff who narrates his life like a movie voice over and a hotelier with a very dedicated work ethic – with the occasional quiz-like investigatory segment thrown in to further the mystery.
Thankfully, the painfully awkward, interminable driving sequences of the original are jettisoned in favour of something a little sprightlier here – York now roams town on his trusty skateboard, monologuing merrily (and infuriatingly repetitively) along the way – and there are presentational improvements too. Deadly Premonition 2’s comic-book art style is a delightfully fitting update to its rather drab precursor, bringing a greater sense of warmth and richness to the world, and the diverse soundtrack is fantastic, both wide-ranging and mercifully whistle-free.
This, though, is where we take pause; from a technical perspective, Deadly Premonition 2 is a disgrace. Indoors, its frame rate could charitably be described as inconsistent, but out in the open world, it’s a migraine-inducing single-digit slideshow compounded by stutters and seconds-long hitches. My play-through also graced me with unkillable enemies, suddenly unresponsive controls, disappearing weapons, endless looping sounds, missing textures, floating environmental objects – all requiring a reload to fix – and at least two crashes to the home screen. The original Deadly Premonition might not exactly be a bastion of technical competence but for publisher Rising Star to be releasing a game in this state, a decade on, as a full-price title is shameful, even if it has now made allusions to some non-specific improvements it might conceivably make at a later date.
An awful lot of your time is spent exploring Le Carré, so it’s a shame technical deficiencies make it such an intensely unpleasant experience.
There’ll be many, of course, who are willing to accept technical shortcomings as part and parcel of the Deadly Premonition experience, and A Blessing in Disguise is at least playable in a strictly literal sense, even if doing so is never particularly pleasant – given its overwhelming focus on open-world pursuits. For a while though, Deadly Premonition 2 is a real joy, riding on a wave of appealingly unpredictable Swery silliness, married to central mystery with a real sense of drive. Unfortunately though, while the first game’s strengths ultimately overshadowed its weaknesses, it’s increasingly difficult to tolerate Deadly Premonition 2’s failings the more it reveals itself to be a far less ambitious, and considerably less interesting sequel.
For all its diversions and deviations, the bulk of Deadly Premonition 2’s runtime consists of painfully circuitous open-world fetch quests, casting you out across a lifeless, largely forgettable map for lengthy bouts of headache-inducing mundanity that even York’s relentlessly upbeat observations can’t save. Act two, in particular, is a real nadir, offering an interminable procession of time-gated busywork that does nothing to drive the plot forward.

Its biggest failing, though, is a muddled story that’s poorly told; while its predecessor deftly kept multiple plates aloft as its murder-mystery unfolded, making the town and its citizens feel central to proceedings, sometimes devastatingly so, neither Le Carré or its inhabitants make much of an impact at all. Most characters are peripheral to the scattershot plot, all but vanishing after the first act, and although there’s rudimentary time-based movement for Le Carré’s denizens, it’s nominal at best, and there’s no sense, this time, that any have lives off-screen.
It doesn’t help either that the characters the game does invest in only serve to highlight its well-meaning, but ultimately rather problematic world view. For all York’s spirited rejection of bigotry, Deadly Premonition 2’s reliance on outdated tropes around transgenderism and learning disabilities can give the otherwise cheerfully freewheeling adventure a rather bitter undercurrent.
That’s not to say it’s an experience without merit; as underserved as most characters are, Patricia, York’s temporary teenage sidekick, is a surprisingly likeable addition to the cast, and while the flashback offers a largely limp slog, only sporadically enlivened by dizzying plot beats, the present-day section is a whole other matter. These lengthy interrogation sequences, heavy on dialogue and light on interaction, are wonderfully atmospheric intermissions, positively crackling with tension as Agent Davis serves as Morgan’s fiercely pragmatic foil.
You’re technically required to stay on top of York’s hygiene and health as time passes but, as in the first game, it’s an easily ignorable flourish.
Ultimately, though, nothing is likely to disuade fans of the original Deadly Premonition eager for a second outing; technical shortcomings, wobbly game design, and questionable plot developments have been the accepted price of entry for over a decade now, but while the first game succeeded in spite of those flaws – serving up a meticulously implemented, and surprisingly emotional, murder-mystery that pulsed through its world and its citizens, seemingly in real-time – Deadly Premonition 2 often feels rote, lifeless, and rather hollow by comparison.
The inimitable Agent Morgan is undoubtedly Deadly Premonition 2’s saving grace, and, truthfully, I’d happily endure its frequent tedium all over again just to spend more time together; it’s just a shame that his long-awaited return couldn’t be marked by a more inspiring adventure.

International Women’s Day is Today, March 8th. Be about it Y’all. Honor it. Acknowledge it, Celebrate it.
We are all here because of one. The World now is groaning with evolutionary birth, yielding a new, smarter, more vocal, more present in her own wholeness, more ambitious, more passionate, and more courageous crop of Women. I feel so very fortunate that I am alive to witness it. Woooo Blessed Be!!!! I love the tone Women’s Right’s is taking these days. Especially in The Food & Art world.
“Mother is God on the lips of all children”- J.O.Barr. Today I am talking about Mothers. But not how you think. The great women that waft Maternal. The ones that make you sit up a little straighter. The ones that always have a safety pin. The ones who hug you when you are crying. The ones who look to help you, even when you didn’t know you needed it.
Recently I had the blessing to be invited into the home of my good friend Ned. He comes from an artistic and groovy Tribe of family and friends that have adopted me as one of theirs. I have already been blessed to meet his Mother, and have been in awe of the things she has accomplished. Not only does she have 3 outstanding visionaries as children, she is an Architect and Artist of the first water. The structures that she has created are staggering in their beauty, durability, and their majesty. She fosters greatness in the young people she takes to harvest and build with bamboo. She inspires a love and respect of the Earth that most simply do not bother with. She teaches them how capable and imaginative they truly are, while teaching skills to build their adulthoods on. She is sweetness personified and truly a Visionary like this world has seldom seen. She welcomed me into her home as her son & I set about our Culinary Adventures. She pampered me, she fed me, she made sure I had everything I needed and gave me a retreat in the sticky humidity that soothed my complicated mind, and restored my weary body. But, Her MOTHER, I was not ready for. Mem, she is called is a Force like none I have encountered in Australia. She is Celestial Love and Grace in a travel sized package.  I was blessed to stay in her Sanctuary and share time with her.  When I took her hand in greeting it was like 100s of years of Divine Femininity showed up to bless me. She was every secret women have passed down since Eve. She was the cosmos made flesh. She truly is Earth Mother. She devoted the second half of her professional life to crystals, healing, celestial teachings, and all things divine. There is a powerful intellect & abundant love coming from her eyes. I knew she loved me from Hello. I knew then that My Angels sent her to minister to my heart and focus my future. We talked about loss and about God. We talked about family and marriage. We talked about faith and joy. We talked about being a woman in this modern world, and what we have in front of us. She healed something in me. Sitting in her parlour transported me into the Bosom of my own Matriarchy. As we talked I felt wave after wave of encouragement, of peaceful strength, of clean emboldening purpose. She was, in those moments, a conduit to my own Sacred Feminine and she dared me, Y’all. She dared me to Be Whole. To be Myself. To step into the righteousness of my own worthiness on a level I hadn’t yet entertained or dared to grasp. As she held my hands in meditation I just felt the permission to let go, and to claim. I left her More. More myself. More certain of what I deserve, and what I am due personally and professionally. I left her more beautiful than I have felt in 20 years. I have a new flex, and am saturated in purpose. I am forever grateful for her and I will forever lift her up in prayer, in meditation, and enfold her into my heart forever.
This week we served Gumbo. Gumbo is the pinnacle of New Orleans culinary offerings. To me it is a dish of Celebration, of devotion, of Honor, and is the perfect example of what we can accomplish by uniting together for a greater cause. All the ingredients are good on their own, but there is a majick that happens in the hours of simmering that transcends what they could have ever been alone. Think how soul-penetrating your favorite Sunday Gravy, stew, or curry is is when someone has taken the time to perfect each step and given it the time to simmer. There are few things more complex, more deeply savory, more rewarding than a long simmered, well developed, perfectly balanced bowl.
Truly.
I challenge you to think of a slow cooked masterpiece that can satiate or unfurl your soul into a blissful state like sitting in front of a bowl of the Great stuff. The entire world is necessary for a good pot of Gumbo. You must have amazing fresh vegetables, Eastern European Sausage or cured meat, Western European sauce making skills, Native American file for thickening, African Rice and chillies, and spices from the East. It takes all of Us to create this majesty, how can it not be powerful?
Gumbo always takes me to Mrs. Armilla Courtney-Thomas of Fordyce Arkansas. Miss ‘Milla (as I lovingly called her). She taught me all about & how to make Gumbo. She and I worked together doing Front Desk in Vegas, for a few years in the mid-90s. She was a sho-nuff Southern Lady of Faith, Modest but deadly fashion, Strength, and Quiet Brilliance. She was an old school Woman. She worked twice as hard, knew twice as much, and did so with a regal grace many cannot pantomime. She was one of the first women of color to work front desk on the Strip in the 60s. She left the south and never did domestic work for pay. She was self-educated and married a business man who also had a degree and they had 3 daughters. She was the Elder in that church sense, on the job. She and I talked about any and everything when I was lucky enough to cross shifts with her. She was a bonafide Wonder. I respected her. I revered her. I cherished her.
One Carnival season, she and I were talking about Mardi Gras food. She asked me if I made Gumbo, and at the time I only ‘helped’. She insisted I MUST have my own version and invited me to her house to learn. She gave me “Southern Living 1996 Annual Recipes” to study so I’d be ready to cook come Monday. She explained the differences between okra and file. The points to add each protein, and when to add tomatoes and when NEVER too. It was quite a day! We conjured up a chicken, sausage, and crab file’ gumbo that I still hold all gumbos I make to. To say it was revelatory is an understatement. I could not WAIT to make it for my Gramma Wilma. I took the pot over and dished out the gumbo on perfect white rice, showered it with chopped parsley & green onions, butted the bowls up to the table brimming with buttery bread and saltines. I cannot tell Y’all how proud I was of the oohs and ahhs my Grandparents made for this gumbo. My Grandpa added 40 glugs of Hot Sauce to his and wrecked it! He said the only thing he needed in it was not a damn thang! Gramma Wilma said it was as good as hers (it wasn’t even close), and asked who taught me. I told her about Miss Milla, she laughingly said “Sonny’s who owns the Funeral Homes wife?” I laughed, and said of course you know her! She said to me “you know I know everybody in my neighbourhood! Especially the ones that can dress and that can cook, and honey she does both better than anyone from Arkansas has a right too!”
I have been looked after, guided, and blessed by The most Incredible women. I am offering the rest of my life to My gender. To exalt and educate about the scores of nameless Goddesses who have served this world. I hope that the traditions and recipes I am preserving inspire you to look in your Family Tree at all those leaves, roots, and branches that have given your family tradition. That have nurtured and accented your lives with softness and strength. That have taught you everything from your ABCs to how to love and be a part of your community. My want is that you cherish the women around you, offer them a little more sweetness, a little more time, a little more dignity in the mundane. We all need to be acknowledged for what we make, what we work hard for, what we create. So today look to the Women in your world and favor them….
