July Talk: A Primer

I’m gonna talk about July Talk for the rest of the day, bear with me.

July who in the whatnow?

If you’re Canadian, there’s no way you’ve never heard them on the radio at this point. Because of CanCon regulations they’re getting played like eight thousand times a day, particularly in the GTA by Edge 102.1 and Indie 88. I’m alright with this.

If you’re not, let me tell you a thing.

July Talk is a rock band based out of Toronto, ON. They’re signed to Sleepless Records and have released two full length albums -- a self-titled that has been re-released a few times with added songs, and their second album “Touch” released in September 2016. 

Ok? But there’s so many rock bands, what else you got? Why are they different?

July Talk’s entire sound is centred around their dual vocalists, Peter & Leah. Their aesthetic plays with the duality of the voices and a lot of dark/light dichotomy. For a very long time they applied a purely black & white look for all promo photos and videos and performances. Their songs explore all kinds of themes -- there are a lot of songs about relationships, songs about human connection, directly calling out shitty people and institutions (most of the time they introduce the song “Gentleman” as being about “shitty men” and “Jesus Says So” is all p much about colonialism in the name of religion). 

In November of 2016 they were on tour in the States, and after the election they started posting this poster at all of their shows:

And if you didn’t think they were serious -- at a show that fall in New York, Peter & Leah actually had someone removed for shouting at Leah to take her shirt off during a very quiet and vulnerable moment in a song. 

Which is just a bad idea. Leah will not suffer misogynist fools.

Cool. So who’s in this band?

Technically, there are five members of July Talk. They are:

Peter Dreimanis

founding member, lead singer & guitarist

looks like Harry Styles but sounds like Tom Waits

(go watch a video and search your soul you know this to be true)

has an Instagram but mostly just uses it for artsy photos of Leah or himself

grew up in Edmonton and loves him some Oilers

but I don’t hold that against him

Leah Fay

how do I begin to explain Leah Fay?

Leah Fay is flawless

I hear her hair’s insured for $10,000

I hear she does car commercials... in Japan

her favourite movie is Varsity Blues

one time she met John Stamos on a plane...

...and he told her she was pretty

one time she punched me in the face. It was awesome

ok obviously that’s a Mean Girls quote

but Leah is incredible

she is a proud and vocal feminist and LGBT ally (possibly pan herself?)

she’s a sweetheart but she will fuck you up if you mess with her

I love her a bunch

Danny Miles

Danny plays drums in July Talk

he has the most pure Instagram ever

there are occasionally photos of him from JT appearances

but mostly it’s just neat birds that he sees?

has his own logo and uses the hashtag #drummerswholovebirds

Danny is so good and so pure

Ian Docherty

Ian’s Instagram is private but he tends to do a lot of live videos of himself just playing guitar at home

if you didn’t guess, Ian plays guitar

took Leah to her first ever metal show in June of 2017

they saw Ghost and it changed Leah’s life

if you tweet about July Talk Ian will be all up in that shit in no time

seriously his Twitter is like 75% RTs of people talking shit about his band

Josh Warburton

idk I guess Josh exists too?

plays bass

I have a lowkey crush on Josh

he looks like a former boss of mine though so that’s weird

anyway Josh also sings backup and is big on the “ooh ooh oohs” on Guns & Ammunition
