Entombed by Deftones is so Wolfwood / Vashwood coded it makes me want to throw myself into traffic
full lyrics breakdown ⬇️
From the day you arrived, I've remained by your side. In chains, entombed
Ok so obviously Wolfwood is sent to follow Vash and guide him to Knives. Wolfwood is often depicted surrounded by chains, probably in reference to him being bound by his duties and the “monster” he’s become by being experimented on. Entombed also reminds me of how he’s literally carrying his cross around, by the time we meet him he’s already got one foot in the grave.
Placed inside, safe and sound. Shapes and colors are all I see
This first chorus makes me think more of his role with the orphanage and protecting children. The “shapes and colors” reminds me of the crazy psychedelic scene in Stampede when he’s first being experimented on. It could also refer to how his life has been reduced to seeing certain people as targets to kill rather than living beings.
On the day you arrived, I became your device. To name and soothe
Vash is often sympathetic to Wolfwood’s feelings of being dangerous and untouchable (hence the “soothing”). In Stampede Vash also insists on calling him Wolfwood and not The Punisher, showing that he sees him as human and not some mindless killer
Placed inside, safe and sound. Shapes and colors are all I see. Shades of colors are all I feel
Ok this is my favorite even though it’s almost exactly the same as the last chorus. I see this as the hospital arc in Trimax, when Wolfwood realizes that Vash is something special and deserves to be protected by him, and not just because it’s his job. And the whole shapes and colors and shades thing reminds me of that crazy scene where Wolfwood is reflecting on how a man like Vash could exist with a very lovesick look on his face. On a more depressing note this could also reference his death, at least in the ‘98 series. He had just killed Zazie and had that breakdown over his willingness to kill others to keep Vash safe. He dies thinking of Vash and the girls and the life they could’ve had, but it’s so idyllic (in a lush green landscape) that it’s obviously just a pipe dream, shapes and colors in his mind.
The rest of the song is pretty much that repeated. Also I haven’t actually read all of Trimax yet, I’ve only seen snippets of these scenes so sorry if it’s not 100% accurate but I think the gist is pretty clear
