Waking up to the sun shining into my room was pleasant at first, until I started to gain more consciousness and began to feel a raging headache spreading from my temples.

I groan and roll over, bumping into Jamie's sleeping body.

Reaching down and grabbing my phone, the first thing I realize is the fact that my phone is on 5%.

The second thing i realize is the massive amount of notifications I have from every social media platform I own.

Hundreds of Instagram follows and snapchat messages from my friends. I quickly open my phone and see Stella sent me approximately 17 video snaps. yay.

I listen to her videos like a podcast as I sit in front of my mirror and begin to take off last night makeup.

However, this wasn't anything like a usual Stella podcast about her boyfriend David or her school troubles. No, this Stella podcast was earth shattering.

To (grossly) sum it up:

- Stella posted the video of me singing and playing guitar to her (mildly) popular TikTok page

- Posts the video at 12:34am (current time is 1:26pm)

- The video goes viral, 450k likes in 13 hours

- Caption literally says "Hazel is gonna kill me lol follow her instagram cause she's too good for TikTok @ HazelJones777"

The butterflies in my stomach felt like a mix of "Oh my god!!!!" and "Oh my god..."

Out of curiosity, I started scrolling through all the new comments left on my older posts by my new followers.

"Post more singing videos!"

I smile at the overwhelming positive skew of the comments, people like my playing! how exciting!

Getting up from in front of my mirror, I head to my closet to dig for my old guitar.

As I dust it off, the sudden return of old memories reminds me of why I haven't played guitar in 6 months.

Ever had a man ruin something you love for you? Yeah.

Pushing those thoughts aside, I start to associate the guitar with the positive memories of last night, and not the negative old ones.

Strumming it almost made my ears bleed, she needs a tune real bad.

As to not wake up a still sleeping Jamie, I grab my guitar and head upstairs from my basement into my living room. I sat down on the couch and began to tune it until she played almost perfectly

You know how I mentioned those "Oh my god!!!" butterflies before? Yeah, in this moment those were greatly overpowering the "Oh my god..." butterflies.

What this means is, I wanted more.

I set my phone up on the arm rest of my couch and began playing a cover of "I Walk The Line" by Johnny Cash

My singing was only okay but I decided to post it on my instagram anyway.

Captioned: "Another cover no one asked for"

Jamie finally woke up at 3:24pm. Currently stats are 475k likes on Stella's TikTok and 1,876 likes on my instagram video, life is good.

At 9:48pm, my friend Mable texts me.

"Me, U, Jamie, Eddie hangout tn??"

At 10:14pm, Jamie and I are climbing into the back of Eddies Subaru Impreza.

"So when are you gonna give in and download TikTok?"

I was caught off guard by the sudden question from Olivia in the passenger seat.

A Brisbane-based rapper called Zheani Sparkes has released a track called The Question on YouTube, accusing Die Antwoord‘s Ninja of rape, pedophilia and distributing explicit images, and naming his bandmate Yo-landi Visser as an accomplice, grooming her online before bringing her to South Africa.

This is a difficult story to get one’s head around.

Yo-landi posted the following to her Instagram a week ago – this was the first we had heard of the accusations:

CLOUT CHASER part 1 It has come to my attention that a DA fan girl called ZHEANI has accused me of some really horrible things. I dont usually respond to these things as people say shit abt me all the time. But this time she has attacked my family including my daughter. Me and ninja broke up in 2013- I started seeing someone else. And Ninja had a bunch of girlfriends at the time. One of them was a fangirl from Australia called Zheani, who Ninja invited to south africa to visit him. She accepted the invite and came to visit shortly after. i think she stayed in SA a total of 4 days or something… (might of been bit longer.. cant remember) i only saw them once during her visit. As you can imagine it was a lil awkward cos our break up was still kinda fresh. I bumped into Ninja and this girl and she asked me for a foto. My first impression of her was she seemed like an obsessive DA fan girl – her hair was cut exactly like mine but she also seemed sweet. Ninja told me aside that after meeting her in person, he didnt really have chemistry with her. Shortly after this he cut the trip short an she returned to Australia. But Ninja felt bad because he said she was a nice person. And they stayed friends on txt. A year or so later (cant remember exact dates) we played at the Big Day out Festival in Australia. Zheani hit us up and asked us if she could help us get Vegan food on tour. We said yes as i thought that was a cool idea. So our management hired her as a PA for our crew. She brought me vegan food every morning on tour – she was really sweet and knew her food well. But when we were backstage i did notice she was trying very hard to hit on 2CHAINZ the rapper who was touring with us. she gave him her number 10 seconds after meeting him and kept hitting on him and his crew the whole time. I thought this was kind of lame – but not a big deal. Anyway the tour ended and the last time i saw this girl she brought me a vegan burger in my hotel room. I said good bye, gave her a a hug and I never heard from her again. ninja told me he stopped speaking to her after the tour because he said she was irritating. (tbc see nxt post)

CLOUT CHASER prt2 5 years later this fan girl Zheani comes out with an insane story saying she was ‘trafficked out’ to africa by me 😂 (trafficking involes kidnapping btw). Here’s what we do know: Die Antwoord/Yo-landi did have images of Zheani on their social media accounts when this all allegedly went down in 2013. One commenter on Zheani’s Instagram said: “Just casually seeing you on DIE ANTWOORD’S Facebook page omg!!!🙀🙀🙀” You can see the post they commented on here. From the looks of it, though, all traces of the posts (and Zheani) have been removed from Die Antwoord’s social media accounts.

Okay, so that’s a bit weird. But understandable given the current situation.

Zheani posted the following to her Instagram in 2013, evidently right before she got on the plane to South Africa:

She doesn’t look like she was in any way coerced to get on the plane. But, she was a fan, had been contacted by the band on social media (we’ve seen screen shots that place the initial contact from Yo-Landi on Instagram) and had been flirting with Ninja online. Any fan would be excited by having flights and passports organised by a band they look up to – right?

Okay – so what happened?

We’re going to use screenshots from The Question (so titled because Die Antwoord means ‘The Answer’) to help explain this one.

‘Watkin’ refers to Ninja’s real name – Watkin Tudor Jones.

It definitely appears that the band were following Zheani’s socials. About a year after returning from South Africa and having no contact with the band, Zheani was flown to New York to model with Cara Delevingne. Then, this happened:

Yo-landi alluded in her Instagram post to ‘nude selfies’ taken by Ninja and Zheani (who, by the way, was 20 when all of this happened) – in the clip she shows screenshots of emails between Ninja and District 9 actor Sharlto Copely, whom Ninja met on the Johannesburg film set for Chappie:

This email exchange appears to back up tabloid claims from 2014 (as published in full here): “It is claimed by two sources that Ninja sent explicit photos – in the act of having fellatio performed on himself – to at least one female member of the set. Several sources say he hit on female cast and crew, even in front of his partner Yo-landi. He invited them to Cape Town “telling them they would get a hotel room and hire prostitutes to join them”, said a source.”

Yo-landi also said she only met Zheani in passing, taking a selfie together which could be this one posted on Zheani’s Instagram page:

However, Yo-landi was following and commenting on Zheani’s Instagram account before Die Antwoord was in contact with her – and there’s screen shots:

It’s also alleged Ninja wrote the songs Sex and Ugly Boy about Zheani. Zheani posts, among others, these screenshots in her video – apparently imposed over video featuring handwritten notes/lyrics:

There is plenty more to this story. And, obviously, there are two sides. We aren’t saying Zheani has fabricated anything to kick start her career, nor are we saying the allegations against Ninja or Yo-landi are true. The fact is we just don’t know, at this stage. A source close to Zheani, who knew her around the 2013/14 period when she went to South Africa and worked with Die Antwoord as a PA on their Big Day Out appearances (something confirmed by Yo-landi in her Instagram post) has told Girl the allegations have been brought forward after hearing rumours of the band being booked to perform at this year’s Splendour In The Grass festival. There is nothing (that we can find) to back up this rumoured booking.

Birds of different feathers do not flock together. You may choose to find a new partner. You are an university student and no one can force you to do anything you don’t want.

I just don’t understand that you may choose to play hard or work hard in this four year in university. However, it seems that it is the hardest choice when you choose to study hard.

If we follow the study plan, we should take five to six course for every semester. Otherwise, we may need to defer. Under my calculation, we need to spend around two hours on reading the materials or doing revision for each course. It takes around ten to twelve hours a week. It is fine at the beginning  of the semester.

On the other hand, our schedule maybe affected by the deadlines of assignments and presentations, which may affect our GPA, during the semester. It is difficult to finish reading all materials if we do our assignments just for aiming a good grade. I think the most meaningful part is the reading materials when we are doing presentation, especially for the humanities students as me. So, I hope we can start doing our presentation after we finish all the reading and gain from the process.

We better be prepared that we may not having a high income job as we are studying Humanities. Why don’t you study business if you want a high income job in the future? I don’t understand that why you are so concern on the GPA instead of gaining knowledge from the university life. Your academic levels should not be valued by the GPA! GPA just represents the grading from the universities or even the society but you should not be valued by grading! If we are not friends, I will not spend so much time typing those words for you!.

It seems that studying in Hong Kong universities is a anti-intellectual matter. They propose that you should be familiar with the topic which taught for three to four months. In fact, we need to clear our mind for the new semester when we just finish the courses last semester. I am sure that we are not as  familiar with our major as expected when we graduate.

It seems that the universities in Hong Kong want to torture with the tight study plan. I think I should aim for knowledge instead of grading or even a piece of diploma in this four years. Otherwise, why do I need to study in university?

We posted #BU10339, #BU10352, #BU10405, #BU10366 and #BU10414 on the platform. It is about two guys argue because of someone absent in the group project, and complain the system of the university. We hope to achieve these influences: 1, Discuss the problem of free-riders in group project. Moreover, we hope that we can stimulate people to reflect about the system of the university; 2, After people seeing this statement, we hope that they can review the anonymity of Secret and the effects due to this anonymity. Technical efforts

In Facebook, there is a lot of “Secret Page” that provide a platform to different people submit their secret to share to others that make them find resonation with somebody. Most of the secret page managed by someone called “Admin” belong to the community that the page declare to. These “Admin” only have the power to decide post the secret or not. In general, most of the secret would be posted only in the case that the secret attack some people with opening their real name, including pornography and violence, and not related to the community. Moreover, apart from the contributor, others comment, share and like the post must through their real account that means they need to express their opinion with their real identity.

Our group find these kinds of secret page have two features. First, anonymity. People cannot be aware of the identity of the contributor. Second, interaction. In these secret pages, other user in Facebook can through “Like” and “Comment” to response the post. For instance, people in real can give “sad” to the post to express they are feeling lost. The features of Facebook help our group grain the response quickly and make our script seems real enough.

Therefore, we submit the secret to “HKBU Secret”, a secret page served students studying in HKBU, create a story about two friends arguing for the problem of assignment. We submit it day by day, after the former secret have posted, we write down the secret was responses to the former one and submit it. After five post, we create a story, which is challenging the purpose of doing assignment and authenticity on Facebook.

Aesthetic influences

The art piece is influenced from “Excellence & Perfection” created by Amalia Ulman on instagram. From April 20 to September 19 in 2014, Ulman performed a brand new artwork within photo and social media, entitled “Excellence & Perfection”. She uploaded an images were made up of “Part I”, in black lettering on white background, and writed down the caption that read “Excellence & Perfection”. After that, the photographs were posted to Ulman’s Instagram account over a period of six months giving followers of the account a heavily engineered insight into her supposed life. In the project, Ulman take on the characters of ‘cute girl’, ‘sugar baby’ and ‘life goddess’, simulating behaving a female on social media.

In the first place, Ulman play the role of an artsy, provincial girl who has moved to Los Angeles, a big city, for the first time. The girl who want to be a model posted the photographs decipt clichés of aspirational living, such as healthy breakfast, yoga, encouraging quotes, visits to the spa, and shopping sprees on instagram. Using middlebrow props looks feminine, hashtags that girl commonly uses, and filters full of pink and white, the Instagram feed became ubiquitous documentation of someone striving for a perfect life. Ulman successfully played the part of a normal, pure and cute girl on the internet. Our group are inspired by this, it bring us a new idea on doing art on internet, make a good use of social media. Therefore, we refer to her idea, make the “secret art piece”.

Conceptual ideas

We have two main idea in doing this art piece, assignment system and authenticity.

Firstly, our upper levels motives is discussing the purpose on doing assignment in university. Usually, all of university students need to doing group project with others, whether they want to or not. And that system derive different problems. The most commend one is “free-rider”, person who put very few effort on the group project. Free-rider not even create an unfair situation to other students who is willing to attain perfection, lose the original purpose on doing group project, complement and inspired each other. The other is "learning pursuit”. Someone want to pursuit the knowledge on doing assignment, but a majority of people are focusing on grading. One of the purpose of doing group project is enhancing the co-operating skill, however, that should not be the main purpose on doing assignment. We think that co-operating oriented assignment limited the developed of students on their learning area. For example, in our story, there is two type of people, one is mainly focus on understanding the theory and the other one is mainly focus on getting a good grade. The group project create the conflict between them, and that cannot help them improve themselves. That is putting the cart before the horse, people cannot learning deeply in their area but need to learn cooperate with others.

Finally, we hope to discuss the authenticity in secret page in Facebook. In this secret page, people can submit any post that is not convenient to talk with their own identity. It seems similar to the forum which also provide the authenticity to users. Originally, the purpose of secret page is building up the sense of belonging to the community members, but that would be mislead when the page would not opened the identity of contributors. Users in this kind of page can easily create the public opinion and lead them with a fake story. In our project, the first post until 7/12/2017 have 104 like and 16 comments on it, it is a quite big number on a page only have 24,976 like and not buy advertising on facebook. That bring us a question about authenticity on social media. Anonymity let the users does not need to take the responsibility on posting any words. That is a danger for the people cannot find out the reality on the community. On surface, it seems bring more real to the community, the members are more willing to share their own secret about the community to the public, but in fact, fake news and slander are more liable spreaded out.

All of us are the students of the Creative and Professional Writing. We tried to use a more creative way through new media to write and discuss some important issue.
